  • I take a look at some of the things that feed my addiction to collecting and purchasing physical media.
    Blu ray / 4k / limited editions / steelbooks… you name it. There’s always something out there to convince us to spend our money and sometimes, it’s so tempting… even if we don’t really want or need it… we’re TRIGGERED.
    Let me know in the comments what tempts you into sometimes overspending on your physical media collection.
    Let’s discuss…

    I just upgraded and started my 4k collection in January. The quality upgrade with oled and hdr has been amazing. Theres so many movies i want to revisit or see for the first time. Definitely need a budget though. Trying to grab movies that go on sale. If its not full price i feel a little better

      It’s tempting to go for the upgrades straight away isn’t it ?!
      For anything I already own on Blu ray I’m trying to hold back any upgrading for the sales or until it’s way cheaper. A budget is a wise idea going forward.

    It’s like we all have a drinking problem and we are meeting in a pub every Monday (release day) and signing up to a beer festival news letter for the latest news 😮 the only way out is to unplug from the internet and only take an allotted amount of cash into HMV or CEX 😆 other than that…. There’s no way to stop…..please like comment and subscribe 😁 I’ve come to the realisation that, life’s to short, enjoy your hobby and enjoy the physical releases while you still can. You make some excellent points Phill but it’s too late for me 😂 take care mate👍😃👍

      I was very aware when talking about unsubscribe that in turn I’m also kinda asking folks to subscribe.
      It’s kinda too late for me too. I’m still carrying on clearing some out but I’ll be continuing to collect. But… the efforts to contain a certain collection size will be ongoing.

    I love these videos! You either express exactly how I'm feeling or make me think in a totally different way about collecting. I've noticed several unopened movies in these videos recently; movies that I'm kicking myself for missing out on that are now going for an arm & a leg. If you decide to have a "reverse haul" & purge any of these, I'm very curious to know what you'd consider selling them for. 🤔 I apologize if this comes off as tactless, but if I don't ask, I'll never know. 🤷🏼 I'm looking for The Witch & The Guest from Second Sight & Tremors from Arrow. I don't do social media,so feel none of that pressure.I buy what I like based on various factors like genre,director etc.I think everyone likes different things so other peoples opinions of movies are always interesting to hear,but they wouldn't have any effect on my buying habits.I know some of my favorite films are probably considered bad and some considered masterpieces.I don't care how good a film is generally considered to be,if it's not something that interests me in terms of plot and setting then I'm not gonna bother with it,too many films I am interested in to waste time with ones I'm not.I have very little interest in the latest thing,I spend most of my time these days looking for older missed titles that appeal to me.I'm also not a completionist so have no problem only owning the movies I consider good in a series and ignoring the rest.....for instance,I own one Robocop movie,lol.

    I am really enjoying your videos Phill - it’s about time someone picked apart the silliness that occurs to many of us collectors. I have changed my habits and philosophy behind collecting recently - concentrating on completing sets rather than starting more. As time goes on I seem to find myself more and more disjointed from what appears to be the mainstream attitude on most Facebook groups with all of the Fomo that surrounds most releases, aswell as the denial that a lot of people seem to experience around criticism of various releases. A lot of people seem to vigorously defend their opinions on their latest purchases of certain releases almost to justify their spent money to themselves - it’s bizarre.

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  6 месяцев назад +2

      Thanks RetroReels, glad my different take on things is finding some common ground with others.
      Funny you should say about feeling disjointed with some of the groups. I kinda feel that way sometimes. Not sure what to put it down to at the moment (think I usually put it in the same sort of category as the hype) but I’m finding that with a lot of releases from the boutique labels… some of the titles seem to be put on a pedestal. For some reason I see a lot more love and acceptance for titles that in the day. We’re perhaps a little below average. I see folks buying up and pre ordering films like Barb Wire / Vertical Limit / Super Mario Brothers… none of these movies at a time were considered must owns or classics for the collection by any stretch of the imagination. But a boutique label releases them in some kind of special edition and suddenly they’re touted as some of the best 🤷🏼‍♂️
      That fear of missing out on this special edition seems to breathe life into a previously uncared for movie.
      I’ve been caught out by it before. Riding the wave of excitement of a release I’ve filled my shelves with some sh!tty titles.
      I love collecting, I really do. I just gotta wake up, pull it back and realise that not all of these movies belong in my collection. And yeah, some pages on social media, you can’t discuss a release or title without someone getting butthurt and just straight out firing an attack back. I find Facebook particularly bad for this.

    • @RetroReels
      @RetroReels 6 месяцев назад +2

      @@PhillwithadoubleL I suppose with regards to certain titles, each one means something different to different people. I was pleased to see Super Mario Bros released, but only bought the standard edition. People do seem to waste a hell of a lot of money on cheap tat that they wouldn’t have bought otherwise in these Ltd sets such as pin badges etc, then complain they can’t keep up with the cost. You are right about riding the wave of excitement - also some people latch on to a stance and follow like sheep. One thing that Facebook seem to be at the moment is people stand by their opinion like it’s their life - whether praising or condemning a title they just don’t seem to want to have an open mind and listen to others differing opinions if they make any sense. It’s almost as if they need validation that they are correct - but who actually cares at the end of the day?
      You are right with sales also - people go nuts for £5 off a title they had no interest in previously at £30, but now have to rush to get it for £25! 😂

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  6 месяцев назад +1

      @@RetroReels I do dislike the firm stance and how closed of some people seem to be. There’s no discussion or consideration. I completely see why some people would enjoy a particular movie, I enjoy listening to them express why they feel that way. I might not agree but isn’t part of the fun on having social media meant to be that discussion and that interaction over flat out right or wrong 🤷🏼‍♂️
      All these things I mention in my videos. Mostly the way I personally feel. Some agree, some don’t but I’ll never shut down someone for having a different opinion or different approach to things. I like that interaction from others and hearing different opinions.

      @@PhillwithadoubleL with regards to taste in films etc I am the same. But when people dispute fact rather than opinion - such as with transfer that may be too heavily dnr’d etc, that does annoy me when they claim it’s the best it’s ever looked etc - there seems to be a growing number of people that want their films to look all bright and shiny, regardless of the cost to how the film originally looked. Perhaps another group need to be setup to seperate these people with the ones like myself who believe that 4K should be a means of film preservation - the closest representation to what the film looked like theatrically, rather than spruced up in an attempt to make it look different than its age permits

    I have a little bit of an opposite problem where if I see someone unboxing a title before I order it, I lose interest in that title. I like to see my new purchases for the first time through my own eyes so I mostly preorder otherwise I will get things spoiled, if that makes sense.😅 Not talking about spoiling the movies, but the packaging and the bonus material etc. That is why I cancelled Horrorpack years ago because RUclipsrs would also get theirs first and it took away the element of surprise and the fun of unboxing.

    I definitely feel this. I only got into collecting boutique label movies and 4K within the last 6-months or so and I'm already a fiend for it. The big triggers for me are Hong Kong movies in general (Damn you, 88 Films!), then sales (Sure, I've never heard of this movie - but, hey, it's 30% off. It's still over $50, but SALE!), and deals on OOP stuff (Again, never heard of this movie but I know this release is rare and, look, it's never this low in price! Sure it's still over $100 - but DEAL!)

    For me, the priority is the films. I have a list of films that I desire to see whether it is broadcast on TV, streamed, or only available on disc. Physical home video is only one of the tickets to ride, yes I get that it’s better visual and sound quality on disc but it isn’t worth the money if it is available to watch it streamed or broadcast. I stick to that list and only look for films on that list. I will only buy the physical copy if it isn’t available elsewhere or if it is a film that I really liked and usually I prioritise finding cheaper secondhand purchases.

      I need to balance things more like that.
      Happily buy and keep the physical for the movies I love but the things in between. I don’t need to keep them all on my shelves… all these triggers just saw me buying far too much of that in between stuff and just keeping hold of it ‘for the collection’ - if I don’t care about it that much then it doesn’t need to remain in my collection.
      Like you say, there are plenty of other options to see certain movies… and at a fraction of the price.
