Leaving my mistakes in I think is important. It makes it more relatable.

My car also has no thermostat in the time I've owned it. I am in the midst of a top end rebuild and have sourced thermostat, rod, linkage, and a shroud. My heads are aftermarket heads, new, and also not entirely clean of flash from the casting. I'd like to know how you planned on filing out the flash if the rod didn't have enough free play on your engine. Here in Florida, they claim the thermostat isn't needed because "it never really gets that cold". I'm with you on putting it in because in identifying the cause of cracked chambers, I cannot rule out improper warm-up. Cracked chambers = why I am rebuilding.
