The huge EV depreciation we've seen in the UK means that more people than ever are currently searching for a cheap used EV, and lots of them seem to be asking me questions about buying one.
This video tells you the basics of what to look for and how it differs from buying a used Diesel or petrol car.
Obviously, we also look at the "HPI CLEAR" unrecorded write off issue again which shows the value of buying a V-Check www.vcheck.uk/?aid=31442

I would also add that mr. Jim Starling wrote a must-have book called ‘buying a used car in the UK’ go and grab it. I did. No pressure 😝
Thanks buddy 🙌🙏
Did the v check on my new car .All clear but so nice to know.( used your link)
Thanks Keith, well worth it mate.
Excellent info Thankyou.
Glad it was helpful!
Tip top as usual Jim! 👍
Thanks James
super helpful thank you
Glad it was helpful! 👍👍
👍👍👍.Thanks Jim
Cheers 👍👍
Addendum to your excellent book coming out to cover looking for used EVs? Great video very timely cheers Jim
Maybe!
I would wait until the end of 2024. 190,000 company cars will be added to the EV 2nd hand stock. currently there is 16,000 cars available on Auto trader and this is increasing as the 2020 company cars are being released. By the end of 2024 250,000 cars will be released to the market with 250,000 to be released every year after. We have reached the company car saturation point of 250, 000 to 300,000 cars a year (800,000 cars on a 3 year cycle) so they’ll be plenty if you wait. Depreciation is bad now on all BEVs but with 190,000 cars added to the market will there be a larger uptake or fields of un sold cars.
Great point!
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru the market for EVs is weak. I don’t know many private dealers excepting them. I know that my local BMW franchise will not accept any EV trade ins on ICE (there is support for BEV to BEV trade ins ) or early PCP returns. ICE prices continue to climb month on month. If BEVs don’t sell in the 2nd hand market the finance rates will rocket due to depreciation and kill the private market. Company car adoption will remain at 250 to 300k due to subsidies.
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru it’s worse than I thought if you add in the Hybrids and BEVs there are just 40,000 cars currently for sale on Autotrader we are only half way through the 60,000 cars released from the company car and PCP schemes.
Cheers Jim 👍
Thank you!
Great video, one key point to check when looking at a used EV, does it have a heat pump? Because it will help the winter efficiency no end. And if it does have a heat pump check that you're getting good levels of both heating and cooling in the cabin. Because the heat pump also heats and cools the battery keeping it in the sweet spot temperature range during charging which is important to battery longevity.
Yes, although so many seem unfussed about a heat pump - it's a must have for me
Great video thanks. Ive been stung by buying a Cat S used van in recent years due to not checking it- and I found myself nearly making the same mistake again with an EV on Autotrader. There are a lot of these around...
Thusands of them mate, it's absolutely rife
Thanks jim
Thanks
I would ask an open question about the kinds of journeys the car has usually been used for , and whether tge car us routinely charged at home. This would be in order to infer how much supercharger use, as they are bad for battery longevity if used often.
Not a bad idea
Hi Jim great video as usual hope all is ok with you 😂
All good thanks Roger, hope you and yours are well. 👍
Great video, I’m paranoid 37000 mile cars with drivers seats the same as 100 000 mile cars.
There are plenty of those around! Avoid.
How long do tyres last on an EV? My sister has just had the first MOT on her Mini EV at just over 10,000 miles and has been advised to change all 4 tyres
A lot depends on how you drive it so it's impossible to say. If you're flooring it every 2 mins then they won't last long. In normal driving you'd expect them to wear a bit quicker than a similar sized petrol or diesel as the car is usually a fair bit heavier (due to battery weight).
Good question - quite a few I’ve parked next to I’ve noticed have serious tyre issues - maybe it’s the lease companies refusing to change until 1.6mm but I’ve seen several with bad outer wear.
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru It can also depend on the type of roads and the state of them Jim. I once knew a guy who did overnight courier work with a Merc Sprinter van. Almost all motorway work. His tyres lasted really well, compared to my car, driven on rougher country roads most of the time..... I'd suggest a set of tyres required at 10k miles might suggest some enthusiastic driving.....
@@bordersw1239 you need a new hobby 😁👍
The tyres on my Polestar 2 latest 2 years - 22k miles
Do you see EV’s prices recovering, or do you think EV’s will continue to have poor residuals? 🤔
I think new EVs will get cheaper in the medium term but I don’t see used prices recovering. A fee premium cars seem to hold their value better than others.
What do I know though…? 😉
They will have horrible resale value
Why is it not mandatory for all checks on vehicles to include damage areas etc ,if v check and car vertical can do it so can others and must be forced to do so by law
I really don’t understand it; simpler still, make the insurance company record every write off with MIAFTR rather than it being optional.
@DefinitelyNotAGuru why hpi take money off people for a useless check that is misleading surely that is fraud to a degree
V smart
👍
Hi Jim 👋... those photos are a bit shocking 😵💫
Less shocking are your new, fetching, stripey shirts 😁...are these stipulated in your contract with ' Men & Motors'? 😉😎
Ooh that cuts like a knife!
@@DefinitelyNotAGuru 😆... could be worse, could have stipulated polka dots !!!

I have Zero interest in a AV Anxiety Vehicle
Odd video choice then eh?
I also would have serious range anxiety with an av to be fair I’m not sure if I could even start it.
