That's the point of this scene. Steve was in this role as a man who was convicted of a crime he never committed. So if he never tries to escape from that terrible prison while he is still young, he is basically wasting his time of his life, which is the biggest crime he ever commits.. he feels guilty. That's why this scene is closed with him, staring awake, cannot afford to sleep.

To me, in this dream he's struggling w his conscience that's been constantly condemning him since childhood that you're just wasting your life as a thief (safes thief), while the other part of him (his ego) was satisfied w being a safes thief. Mcqueen's performance is brilliant, and worthy of all accolades, since he was one of those few persons who couldnt be accused of wasting his life. I was wondering whether I had wasted what could have been the best years of my life. I was able to leave those thoughts behind for some time, then I saw this scene and those lines made me think about everything again.
Such a powerful scene! I first saw this as a small child many years ago but I never forgot that one scene. I guess it was seared into my consciousness and later it encouraged me to do something meaningful with my life. So from being a high school drop put at 16 with no qualifications I became a volunteer working with orphans in Eastern Europe and through such work, seeing crippling poverty and injustice (that came from having no education) I later returned to the UK, get an education and now I work as a university lecturer and private tutor helping and motivating young people to take education and life seriously. Guess it goes to show how things in our childhood can affect us in later life.

Really not a movie for a typical ten year old.This scene also had a profound influence on my lifes journey as I have made it a priority to at least enjoy life and smell the roses.My father retired from the US Army and then again as a government employee.He only enjoyed 5 years retirement before he died.If I go to the doctor and get my death sentence I swear to God I am going to laugh and smile and thank Him for my life as I have had a blast!

Shawshank redemption is a kids fairy tale compared to this masterpiece. And don't get me started of that Green mile fantasy crap of a film.
sweety movie. sometimes you feel like turning it of but then you go like let me see if they make it. it twists you mind into another world which will make you not to blink you eye for even a second.
