Holy shit! You can feel Maynard's energy here so much! I just read this part in the book too:
"The frustration I felt at that time is definitely what got this project off the ground then. I'd had good friends in Boston and I'd been successful at the pet store and I believed was on the right path. Then I lose everything and I'm living on $400 a month. I needed to destroy. I needed to primal scream and I needed to be loud enough to make people go, 'What the fuck was that?!' I needed to get it out. It was that tipping point where you either become a serial killer or a rock star."

I met angry Maynard in 1994 . It was quite disturbing i was a young fan and had been following Tool since 1993 went with a friend to Bristol bierkeller U.K. Someone had stolen some of Adams guitars from the bus just before the show, i had only seen a couple of photos of Maynard in magazines and the Sober video on the TV. Anyway, as i was standing outside the venue, i became aware of a man with a green jacket and mohican , but shaved on the sides the rest long walking along the kerb slowly staring through everyone who was waiting to enter the show, i realised just as he passed me that it was Maynard , and turned to my friend and said ' hey that's the singer from Tool' he had a piercing stare that i had rarely seen before it was very unsettling. I realise now what he was doing, i think he was trying to pick up vibes from people outside to see if the thief or thieves were still around. He had an incredible presence /energy. Once the show started around half way through he went into a rant, and challenged anyone in the audience onto the stage to fight him....

I've been revisiting alot of these vids of early Tool playing small venues and have been thinking the exact same thing! Maynards eyeline was always focused on this one spot in the crowd at every show.
Whoever those lucky bastards were before, I'll bet my bottom dollar they never attended a rock show again. Probably went home afterwards, drew the blinds, barricaded the door and cried in the bathtub with 9-1 already dialed on their Panasonic portable phone. The next day they cut their hair short, burned every piece of flannel they owned, aling with their Melvins, Biohazard and Toad the Wet Sprocket t-shirts and immediately got into Dave Matthews Band and Blues Traveler in a big way. And, despite almost 30 years of intense Psychotherapy sessions 3 days a week, every one of them has enjoyed a middling success as assistant managers of Kinkos (or, in that one womans case, head cashier of the JC Penny layaway counter).
I guess the underlying message of my rambling "Where are they now" malarky is that Maynard's rage and frustration and existential angst is perfectly conveyed through his ferocious, nearly feral roar. The sound I can only describe as a Resistance leaders stirring call to arms... followed by taking a massive chainsaw to a metal crate filled with C4 explosives- it hits you so deeply and channels so much aggression that you're just instinctively waiting for the inevitable explosion...
I miss that Maynard. Angry, Hungry Maynard.
Somebody take all his toys away so we can get THIS Tool back.

    • @ChiqeGeek13

That's exactly how I discovered Tool!!LOL it was the show in Detroit and a guy had came up to us and told us to go check out the second stage he had seen lala in Chicago and said these next two bands on stage 2 you don't want to miss so we moseyed on over and it was rage against the machine and Tool! And I couldn't tell enough people about them the next day. I remember the hair standing up on my arms in the back of my neck when he started screaming the fear and awe that I experienced with those jet black eyes 5 ft away in the intensity that was shooting off of him like energy into the crowd it was electric and that's not an exaggeration I think everyone was feeling it it's a day in my life I will never forget I call it one of the best days of my life. And I'm not being dramatic saying it it truly is and has been one of my life's greatest pleasures seeing them live and getting new stuff from them. Unfortunately there hasn't been nearly enough released I've been dying for a live album DVD etc a box set of old stuff like this because people just don't understand seeing tool live now compared to how it was back in 2000 and before. I'm glad for him that he exercised his demons out of him but that intensity was something to behold

I vividly recall seein this transcendent DemonElf, a few feet in front of me, morphing from 5.5 ft to 10 ft Tall, while thunderously belting out a 1/2 minute roar, while holding the note. They never looked back; and from that exact moment, I became obsessed.

This is awesome. It is the beginnings of what might be. It's a call to pay attention. It's a punk rock awesomeness. It's a new way to be yourself and not care. I'm one of Tools biggest fans for Maynard alone first and then the others, and the Music, wow. The drumming ???? Holy Hell!! This, Opiate, is one of the best albums. Once you understand it is live, you can feel the energy and the tightness of the band right away. I am very proud of this band. Terrifying is what the news called this and obviously they don't "get it". They probably listen to Lionel Richie. But, for rock fans, and now, Fear Inoculum, so cool. I can't say enough good things about this band and I am glad I found out about them when I did. It's been a fun time listening to them and going to their concerts when I can.
