It's not about feeling "dense" it's just that the first part of the arc lacked any clear direction, and therefore felt somewhat pointless. The first half wasn't confusing, it was confused.
I see how you could feel that way. And I somewhat agree on the first half being confused in it of itself. But I think it's also important to acknowledge that this saga is a 2 parter and everything Oda has set up has yet to be paid off, and I think he did that beautifully in Enies Lobby. I'm looking forward to your thoughts on the saga as a whole
I think you're focusing too much on the vocal minority of hateful Sakadays fans and not coming at this from the perspective of an adaptation. The source material is probably the most dynamic manga in Jump currently due to Suzuki's great artwork and frame flow. Even Gege says the paneling makes him more self aware of his own shortcomings. The simple fact is, even if the adaptation is above average, it's still unfortunately not elevating the content of the manga. Though there were some extended scenes, the stuff from the manga that was adapted was mostly a copy paste storyboard of the manga panels and a lot of the speed and intricate gun fu was massively simplified in the anime. There is good reason for fans to be a little disappointed since even a good adaptation of great source material is still unfortunately a downgrade.
That's fair, I obviously haven't read the manga, but the thing is, I doubt much of what you stated could be inferred from a couple of traditionally edited trailers and an OP. Much of the online hate started long before EP 1 aired. If anything, the episode has quelled some of the negative reception. Fans being this judgmental, despite having so little to judge is quite concerning IMO.
@ProbablyPretentious I think we have to distinguish between negative reception and hate. Negative reception, pre-episode 1, existed for the reasons of adaptation based on the content from the trailers. And yes while trailer footage can be misleading and isn't enough content to judge an entire show, let's not forget that the main function of a trailer is to get people to get hyped and consume the product. If it's not doing that function, there is a problem either in the marketing or the product itself. And I think most of the visual complaints made in the marketing phase have still carried over to episode 1 though to a lesser extent. It's just disappointing for me personally that a manga with so much potential for great animation isn't living up to that potential. At least so far. And we also shouldn't expect people not to form opinions if they haven't seen the entire show. It's the maker's job in my opinion to get people to watch. If the production quality isn't matching up to that expectation I'd say that's sensible disappointment.
@@ProbablyPretentiousBy judging from the trailer and op it turned out exactly how we thought. The trailer showed multiple scenes so it shows you what the quality will look like on average and the quality wouldn’t just elevate to such a degree to be to far from what we got in the trailers. They can do that one thing where theres like that one super well animated sakuga fight for the season but at the same time thats only one fight, and then again sakamoto days has alot of great fights back to back.
I think Sakamoto days doesn’t have the most engaging paneling, but Jesus Christ the action. Every single time there’s something new and crazy going on and I love it. The perspectives are so creative as well. For someone like Gege to appreciate the choreography as well is huge
Strangely enough, I'm enjoying SL S2 more than S1, i suppose that action focused episodes help a lot, and the OP is awesome. Zenshu so far has been good, but i don't feel much exited about the story. Sakamoto Days looks indeed decent, but the second episode suffered a downgrade in animation, and leaving that aside i think the pacing is going really fast, another character was introduced and joined to the main cast with all the issue solved in just the second episode plus Sakamoto flashback, I didn't feel much while watching the episode, are they omitting and rushing things from the manga? idk.
