    Arkham is one of the few games in which you are still considered a new player after playing 100 hours.

    I really like Eric's take on curses being a "cost" where if you pass when drawing them, you've "gotten away" with a more powerful effect where as blesses are kind of the opposite.

    Thanks for another interesting video, seeing Erics input adds an extra thoughtful but enthusiastic spin. I always find your Arkham content interesting , entertaining and useful, be it “classic trio” or with Eric.
    Nix to the critics, here’s to many more adventures. 🎉 All the best to the whole team from the UK.

    I love Eric’s input on these cards. They have an extensive card game playing/building background although they are new(ish) to Arkham that gives them a good foundation for the discussion.
    I think I enjoyed *this* discussion of the spoiler cards over the previous spoiler reactions for The Feast of Hemlock Vale. I think it’s because the conversation is so fast an automatic when the three experts are talking. Having Eric there causes Justin to go into detail and explain how cards interact with each other. The trio don’t need to have a detail discussion. They can just say this card will be great with “x” and keep going. As a novice, the level of discussion presented here is much appreciated.

    If I recall correctly one of the spoiler guys this season asked the developers about "ignoring action costs" and cards like Sledgehammer, and they've confirmed that effects like this only ignore one of the action costs.

      Good to know, I'll check in on that more because I still see conflicting opinions on it across multiple Arkham communities.

      @@PlayingBoardGamesIts true for Hand Eye Coordination that "without paying its action cost" only save one action. Thats the one that was confirmed. But something like Ad Hoc or Pushed to the Limit both say "ignoring all costs" so those work.

    This was a good video. My excitement at discovering new cards and thinking about how they work together is very similar to Eric’s enthusiasm. It’s infectious, too; I’m excited for all of the new investigators now.

    Long comment incoming, apologies.
    It's interesting imagining trying to look at this box from the perspective of a new player and comparing that to a bought in player as I suppose I am. Part of my job is looking at stuff from different perspectives as well but in a different area so I find it fun to apply it to stuff that isn't work related.
    I got into Arkham just after EotE came out, basically immediately bought all the player side content that was available over the next few months because I was constantly looking at cards in potential decks and going "oh well I need that" and I wanted to play one or more investigator from every single box.
    This was before they'd announced the re releases of the boxes as well, I was buying the old style so I also ended up with all the campaigns. That's the kind of person I am I've come to realise over the years, I go all in on stuff very easily and quickly so now I try and be pretty choosy about what I get in on, rein myself in a bit. Arkham I felt happy about getting in on though.
    Scarlet Keys was a pretty exciting box I think, I was mostly eh on the actual investigators, Charlie and Darrel were very interesting looking and Vincent looked alright, the other 3 less so, just imo but the player cards were very enticing, customisable looked cool and I've enjoyed the ones I've played, a lot of the other cards have become cards I've played quite a bit. The campaign, ehhhhhh I've only played it once and found it decent enough but not great, looking forward to trying it again but it's alot and the finale is my least favourite part (which makes replays obviously a bit of a drag cause you know the ending is the one scenario you kinda have to play). Either way, as a package I felt good about the first cycle to come out after I got into the game.
    So then I was pretty hyped for whatever the next cycle would be, the delay on it has been a bit of a bummer but eh, crap happens. Hopefully we don't have a content gap like that again, one campaign a year is fine. imo expecting more is perhaps too much but I think expecting one every 9-12 months is a fair one.
    As to the actual contents though and going back to my initial thing, looking at it as either a new player or a invested player, the investigator box is kinda leaving me a bit cold and I think it would if I was getting into the game initially right now too (I can't substantiate that until someone invents a machine that lets you converse with alternate versions of yourself though). I dunno whether it's because my expectations are higher knowing more about the game, the extended wait, it's specifically less appealing to me just because or a combination of all that.
    The 3 "classic" Arkham investigators are pretty ho-hum and not much about them is making me excited about playing them, when their deckbuilding was revealed I was expecting them to get more support for that in the box since it's not massively present outside of it (science for Kate, tools and upgrades for Wilson, etc. Dunno what I expected for Hank tbh actually, I think I assumed his deckbuilding would be different from what it is). They don't seem bad as such, just like, fine and plain.
    The two new ones do look very cool though and they obviously have packed the box full of Parley stuff for the Countess, recognising that they hadn't made quite enough prior to it so they kinda had to do it, none of them have felt to me purely like "this has had parley stapled onto it for no reason just because she's in the box" like I know has been opined occasionally but that's very subjective. It does mean the box feels very much built around her though, it's encroaching on every class to varying degrees. Then the bless/curse stuff has a bit of a presence as well, not as much as I thought it would but still enough that her and Kohaku feel pretty interesting and cool out of the box. I think if I was completely new I'd be confused that the bless/curse stuff is on the back of the box, it has a dial included in the box, etc but then is taking up such a comparatively small amount of the cards?
    I do tend to be a player who needs to have the deckbuilding in front of me and filtered though, have trouble visualising who can take what and such without it and then stuff tends to feel better once you've actually built and played with it.

    I remember when I thought Jenny's 3's meant she wasn't bad at anything, and didn't consider that she wasn't good at anything. Fingers crossed that Wilson's pseudo-4's actually is good at everything.

    Flavorwise it's terrible, but I feel like the microscope could be cool in Finn. With his free evade action, he could keep an enemy around just to farm evidence. Or perhaps Trish.

    Not many times this matters, but Wilson gets +1 Skill Value when he uses a tool. Is that a base 7 or 8 with lockpicks? An enchanted fire extinguisher would be an attack at 8 (3+1+1+3) or 9 (3+1+1+3+1)?

    • @PlayingBoardGames
      @PlayingBoardGames  7 месяцев назад +1

      I could be wrong, but my gut says 8 with Lockpicks. I'd need to look at Wilson and other similar cards in more detail to confirm.

      It's +1 to your skill value being tested, unlike Reliable which gives +1 to each of your skills during the test. Pretty sure it's Lockpicks at 7.

    Has anybody done the math for curse/blessed tokens? I'm curious about their effectiveness in different situations. I might do the math myself if not.

  • @camipco
    @camipco 7 месяцев назад

    I hear your point about when bless and curse tokens don't matter... but I think you're overstating it. I mean, it also definitely happens that you're up 2 and you draw a curse into a -1 or -2, right? Or draw a bless into a -3? I mean, the math is complicated, but there's no doubt that putting a lot of curses in the bag will cause you to fail more often, even if it's not every time you draw a curse.

    • @PlayingBoardGames
      @PlayingBoardGames  7 месяцев назад

      Yes, you're definitely right, but I'd argue that if you're putting in a lot of curse tokens, you become a curse deck and then you're looking to turn those curses to positives. Then it changes from just discussing curse tokens as a cost with smaller amounts where they're commonly drawn before more are added.

    Please help. I have dunwich and forgotten age campaigns. At my local shop, they have The Scarlet Keys and The Circle Undone. Which one would you recommend for replayability and difficulty? I don't mind reading as I only play by myself.

    • @PlayingBoardGames
      @PlayingBoardGames  6 месяцев назад

      Honestly, either are fine decisions. Of the two, I'd suggest Scarlet Keys, but that's just because I like the scenarios of that campaign a bit more overall.

      I always tried to throw the card to Eric first and provided more context after Eric mentioned their initial thoughts on the card or added to Eric's thoughts on the card. Maybe I didn't a few times, but I don't think I never gave Eric the opportunity to share their thoughts on each card.
