      +Kind Old Raven I own one of these and it only throttles like that if you do not enable 3D performance mode from the BIOS. I have enabled 3D performance mode from the BIOS and it doesn't drop below 900mhz when playing the most demanding games I own, The only difference is that it's a little louder but I love it.
      So you can use it's full performance if you enable it in the BIOS which causes the fans to power up more

    Man if they had mounted a 120mm radiator to the bottom or the top of the device it would still be super tiny and awesome and then the throtteling would not be a such a big problem.

    • @SheepInACart
      @SheepInACart 10 лет назад +11

      Thats a remarkable believable ideal actually, in fact they use 2 water blocks like the R9 295x2 does and that way they wouldn't even need a custom cooler. You'd still keep exactly the same box dimensions other than 52mm of added height (making it a true cube rather than a half cube of 120mm) and have 2x 80mm fans, but use quieter ones. Couple that with a M.2 slot rather than Msata and you have something truly capable of competing as a gaming machine.
      I'd also like to see a lower spec module with a i3 and factory OC'ed gtx750ti, it'd run throttled on the stock cooling already implemented in this brix unit, and still provide a good basic gaming\LAN system that's perfectly capable of 1080p at >30fps.

    • @XxGhazbaranxX
      @XxGhazbaranxX 10 лет назад +7

      I was thinking this exactly; why didn't they just water cool??? Adds a bit more Height But I doubt people would care if they had something more akin to a cube than a rectangular profile

    • @kondroidschannel
      @kondroidschannel 10 лет назад

      They could of just added a big fan to the bottom and then turned it upside down or to the side ? why oh why didn't they do that :/

    • @CaptMaxz
      @CaptMaxz 10 лет назад

      X Ghazbaran I assume the issue may be maintenance/shipping/QC of the AIU cooler. I can see a flagship model with such designs. I'd have my eye on it to see how it would perform and last. Is this the future of barebones? I think the cube is too monolithic and off putting which is why they added so much "flavor" to the Brix.

    • @micheals1992
      @micheals1992 10 лет назад

      X Ghazbaran if they redesigned the positioning of the PCB they could reclaim some of the extra hight needed for a water cooler by making both the PCBs closer together because there isn't any large heat sinks attached to them.

  • @WelshDdraig
    @WelshDdraig 10 лет назад +35

    I understand why this exists and in its former factor, but to contain a fully fledged GTX 760, I think Gigabyte would have been better of increasing the height of the unit to add a better heatsink/fan unit. The size of maybe their Brix NAS unit or slightly higher. It may not fit on the back of your monitor but at least it wouldn't throttle. Just my opinion. Otherwise it's amazing what they have managed to fit into this form factor.

    • @saturnGEEK
      @saturnGEEK 10 лет назад

      Even if they made it slightly wider, the option of 4 fans for cross airflow would be a better idea. It would take a bit of stress off those fans as well.

    • @dimitriid

      Scott Ster Yes in this case they bent so far the thing breaks: noise I can understand but throttling badly means that it's all but useless for gaming.

    • @MrPiikkipallo
      @MrPiikkipallo 10 лет назад

      Scott Ster You wouldn't have to make it much larger, just a bit for a lot more. It would still be small as hell for a gaming pc.

    • @scottster8858
      @scottster8858 10 лет назад

      Useless is a strong word. I agree that I wouldn't settle for this but 40fps in a modern title, maxed at 1080p, in that form factor is very impressive none the less. I applaud Gigabyte and Intel for pushing the envelope, helping lead the way to smaller, more powerful rigs. The modern PC didn't happen overnight, it happened because people pushed hardware limits in pursuit of ideas, initial iterations are rarely great.

    The new Intel CPUs and the GTX 960 use a lot less power in gaming workloads compared to the GTX 760 and last gen Intels. If Gigabyte makes a new one, it will likely be fairly successful.

      @chriswho12345 9 лет назад +4

      ***** Just like the Core M fanless laptops, lower spec'ed hardware may perform better due to less throttling. A 750ti might be better than a 960 considering the heat in that case.

    • @briansmith2113
      @briansmith2113 9 лет назад +4

      I thought the whole point of the 900m series was that it handles heat better and over heats less and uses less energy than the previous cards.

    • @briansmith2113
      @briansmith2113 9 лет назад +1

      more so than being fast

    • @chriswho12345
      @chriswho12345 9 лет назад +1

      *****, the 750ti is also Maxwell. Maxwell is an architecture improvement, and brings more performance for less energy. However, when the nvidia uses it's boost, a power target is targeted and power consumption is around that amount.
      The 960 would still overheat in that case. The controversy over Core M laptops was that lower specced hardware performed better over time due to less heat being produced.

      donkey1450 guys architecturally a 760 is an 870m. The fact of the matter is that these components are throttling ridiculously. If it's possible we really need vapour chambers in our laptop cooling systems. Personally i think this box needs a bootleg wc loop

  • @Ganbalf
    @Ganbalf 10 лет назад +42

    Gigabyte should have put a 750ti inside it instead of the 760.
    The performence would be better since the thermal throttling wouldnt be as big.

    • @DiceAir

      Plamen Yordanov Don't call Gigabyte stupid for trying to push the technological limits of form factor. They tried, and this version failed due to heat being a limiting factor. The version did succeed in putting these extremely powerful components together though. And rest assured, things will get better as we move on to the next generations which will reduce the size restrictions even further.

      The Maxwell chips in the 900 series are more efficient than their 700 series counterparts. While the 960 requires 120W to operate at full load, the 760 requires 170W, so what you are saying doesn't make sense. Plus this was the point I wanted to make, that if it had newer hardware it would throttle less.

      not very well, fridges were built for making things cooler and keeping them there, but not to hold something heating up inside. it'll make the fridge run constantly(which isn't what they were built for) and itll burn out your fridge faster, AND you face issues with humidity possibly shorting your computer.

      being that this is a full size gpu i would say it would overheat the fridge but if the gpu has a bit of limiter on usage it might work out then. you would need to see what the max the fridge could do then set the max heat output to a bit less then that. so it could maintain a solid working temp but no i wouldn't think it would work to well depends on how much you got to limit it. i would like to see what it could do out in the snow. i know moister but maybe get a dehumidifier on the intake. i live right on a snow belt.

    Who else went whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat alongside linus?

  • @d2ultima
    @d2ultima 10 лет назад +25

    What... desktop GTX 760 has 3 and 6GB of RAM? I only know those cards to have 2 and 4GB variations. Really sounds like it's a 870M in there; those come in 3GB and 6GB flavours. ACTUALLY, in fact, the 870M has GDDR5 memory at 5000MHz, which perfectly describes what linus says here... it's also as strong as (read just about identical to) a 660Ti with extra vRAM if you bump that mem clock up to 6000MHz.
    Edit: Checked the screenshot of GPU-Z he had up just before zooming in at 4:48 and it has a 192-bit memory bus, telling that it's a 870M (desktop 760s have 256-bit mem bus). The base clock of 941 is also the 870M's base clock, which means they lied. That *IS* a GTX 870M that they've modified the vBIOS of (most likely) to tell you that it's a 760.
    ALSO, it has 1344 cuda cores, which is the 870M's tell AGAIN, because 760s have 1152 only. THAT'S A LAPTOP CARD LINUS.

    • @d2ultima
      @d2ultima 10 лет назад +1

      ***** It *IS* an 870M. Here, have a read. linustechtips.com/main/topic/197015-correction-about-linus-gigabyte-bxi5g-760-micro-pc-video/

      ***** I did start the post. I originally commented it out here in near real-time as the video was going on, then when I was finished I realized the video was about a month old. I tweeted at Linus and he told me if I had anything to say, to post it on the forums. So I simply expanded my research a bit and did the post.

    • @d2ultima
      @d2ultima 10 лет назад

      ***** I listed that somewhere along in my forum post, but his specs did not match up. The 760s only have 2GB and 4GB of vRAM and the 870Ms have 3GB/6GB. Also, no gaming-class desktop card comes with 5000MHz memory clock, but the mobile cards do (780M, 870M, 880M). Then I wanted to see what the cores were, to be sure. When I saw 1344 cores, I knew it was a 870M, because the 760 has 1152 and all the rest of the specs matched a 870M. Also, the 870M's base core clock was 941 which matched his video's specs, and the 760's nVidia reference spec is 980 on the core. Did not make sense as to why they'd downclock the base speed but still leave boost on (and I *KNOW* you can modify vBIOSes to negate boost clocks; as I've done that with my 780Ms, and the 870Ms/880Ms/680Ms/etc all have the same modified vBIOS available).

    They need to do a power adapter that can lower the power when the CPU gets hot in order to balance the Thermal Throttle and keeping the machine working at max, also it needs to be slightly longer, maybe like 1inch longer to make the heatsink better, and the heatsinks need LED to reduce heat by dissipating the heat into light.

      Well the thing is that steambox has different design to everything else. It has separate compartments for the GPU and CPU, so it's almost like having the rig out in the open - there isn't any space for heat build-up and the temperature of the CPU or GPU won't be affecting other components.
      And the SteamBox cases are made for dirt cheap.

      It's more expensive, and NOT cost effective & not efficient (it gets hot and loud). These BRIX computers don't even have RAM or storage included, and costs 800$ base.
      Then, did you see the overheating issues? The GTX 760 has a lot of thermal throttling, which gets almost slower than 3 times as stock. That performance would be just about as a PS4.

      Medieval Blast I think he was referring to the fact that this tiny thing with ideal temperatures will vastly outperform a PS4. If a PS4 implemented these technologies inside its current form factor, the possibilities are endless. Of course it costs more, but that one should be obvious, as these are considered high-end desktop-grade PC components.

    WOW! This little machine would be perfect for me if it wasn't for the thermal throttling issues it has. Some people I see are asking, "What would anyone want to use this for?!?!" but for me, It would be perfect. I do a lot of traveling throughout the year, and just recently spent $700 on moving from a AMD 6-core Mid tower case, to a I5 4 core Micro ITX slim case. Though I wont be using my amazing GTX 980 in that little crazy brix PC, It would be much easier to just throw into my Carry-on luggage than my Silverstone RVZ01B Mini ITX. Other than that, This thing is awesome! good job again Linus at showing us all cool new things to learn and talk about!

      @epicDuftbaum 10 лет назад +2

      hellseagle21
      For what case? In case the 2 (or 4) GB of the standard 760 aren´t enough, the chip is too weak to deliver good framerates.
      There is no case when you could benefit from 6 GB Vram, unless you have a SLI-system.

    • @JaconSamsta
      @JaconSamsta 10 лет назад +16

      hellseagle21 Why complain? Because of the cost.
      While more Vram is nice both the 760 and the 880m don't have the GPU performance to make use of that kind of an amount of Vram so it will be wasted while simultaniosly driving up the cost.
      So unless you are doing workstation type CUDA or OpenCL computing it is worthless paired with thoes GPUs.

    Mini-PC's are worth it if you need them for solid reasons.
    For example, my current project involves taking an original Xbox, placing it into a custom acrylic case with a new small PSU and 10.1" display inside, that will run off of the batteries we use for our radios in the Army, and will fit into a small space.
    Once that is finished, I'll be moving onto doing the same thing with a PC or a PS4. I'm pretty convinced that this product from Gigabyte may be the one to use, especially since it's able to use a desktop GTX 760.
    You just have to have realistic expectations. If you didn't have thermal throttling with this mini-PC, why would most people get anything bigger? You don't get a mini-PC like this for top shelf performance. You get it for other reasons.

    • @BluTrollPro

      As someone who has done some work in the middle east (private contractor, not military), this thing throttles to all bejesus at a ~20C room temp, It is going to REALLY struggle when you put it in a 40C tent in an acryllic box.
      My laptop had minor thermal issues but taking it out in 40 degree heat made it throttle down to the point it was nearly unusable.
      If I where you id do a self build ITX system with a proper pcie gpu.
      Also out of curiosity what wattage can you pull from those radio battery packs?

    GIGABYTE Why not make it a tad bigger with proper cooling? Or maybe stick something like 870m/880m to make it perform constantly fair and quieter?

    • @lhl
      @lhl 10 лет назад

      From what I've been able to tell (including what the PCI device id (0x1199) says, it actually *is* an 870M) - note, that's a 100W Kepler part. It'd probably be better off w/ an 860M Maxwell (45W TDP) which would have run cooler and quieter, and w/ a smaller power supply.

    • @valhakun
      @valhakun 10 лет назад

      lhl Hmm, interesting. Does it mean that 870m has the same "guts" as 760 and performs as good when properly cooled?

    • @lhl
      @lhl 10 лет назад +1

      Here's an idea of what the 870m performs at: www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-GTX-870M.107792.0.html - maybe like 70% of a desktop 760? The 870m uses a GK104m vs GK104 that has a totally different set of specs than the 760: www.geforce.com/hardware/notebook-gpus/geforce-gtx-870m/specifications vs www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-760/specifications Honestly I don't know why Gigabyte/Nvidia are labeling it as a 760, every single spec is different.

    • @luisman369
      @luisman369 9 лет назад +5

      +Sm00th TV Exactly, maybe a small version of watercooling without sacrificing too much size. I don't now if those are 60 or 80 mm fans, but that thing has potential.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 8 лет назад +3

      +Sm00th TV Water cooling will not accomplish anything. Because the bottleneck in such a small system is the final step of exchanging the heat to air regardless of how you transport the heat.
      Water cooling only equalizes temperature between a heat exchanger and the heat source. It has been successful in PC cooling for following reasons:
      * Flexibility of mounting.
      * Ability to mount a much larger area water radiator than a possible air cooler.
      * Ability to eject hot air and avoid thermal short circuit.
      However, if you look at this box's cooling system, it already avoids short circuiting and you also don't have anywhere to mount a larger radiator. Perhaps merely the area and gradient needs to be optimized, but phase change heat transport is more suitable here than water cooling.
      And +Alkaid, apropos size. The BRIX Gaming is 60mm tall in total, and 11cm wide. The two fans are 50mm each.

    this unit has a slightly handicapped version of the 760. It still uses the GK104 chip, but some shaders have been shut down (or eliminated, I don't know) the core clock has been reduced, etc etc.
    So even without thermal throttling, it wouldn't perform as good as a 760.

  • @44R0Ndin
    @44R0Ndin 10 лет назад

    So, it has thermal problems.
    I think there's a way to fix this, without giving up entirely on the concept.
    Make the case 2-3x taller, move the 2.5" drive bay to the side opposite the fans, and change the top to a ventilation grill. That makes room for a small water cooling radiator and fan from a pre-existing AIO desktop CPU water cooling system. To fit the pump from the same AIO system, remove one of the two small fans.
    The only extra part needed would be a custom water block, all other parts could be acquired off-the-shelf and used as-is or with minimal modifications.

    Here's something cool that might help these little box PCs in the future. Graphene is a material has almost no resistance, meaning very little heat and faster electric flow (almost the speed of light) between components on the motherboard and the power supply. This means it would conduct data to and from the components more quickly, and because of the high efficiency and low heat, more power-hungry components could be put to use. Cool, eh?

    • @volkswagenginetta
      @volkswagenginetta 7 лет назад

With more and more components available for the mini-itx platform, which allows for properly cooled, upgradable, and desktop grade components, I can't really think of a situation, where I would use a device like this. If a compact computer is needed, the mini-itx platform is the way to go. If a highly portable solution is needed, I would definitely prefer a laptop, or a tablet.

    I don't see the point in PCs being this small. Why do I need to be able to hold the thing in one hand, especially if it is going to limit the hardware options and cooling ability so severely? If this thing was twice as big, it would still be small, and you could probably cool it enough to add a GTX 780, or maybe OC the processor.
    I can't see how being the size of a housebrick is a selling point for a gaming PC.

      I think it's more of an experimental product as opposed to something they intend on selling many units for, I doubt they'll make a lot of these available to buy as the likelihood of people buying it is pretty slim. The concept of making PCs smaller is a step in the right direction however, it's just always a nightmare to keep things cool. A PC like this would be great for LAN parties, or if you travel around a lot, then again, a laptop would suit you better.

    think if the exterior of the case was redesigned airflow could be improved or if they prebuilt it with an extended heat sink that went into some of the free space between the upper pcb and the 2.5 inch drive. as LinusTechTips said if it could just get rid of the heat more effectively then it would be better.

What *would* make sense is to design it around a heatsink and Peltier heatpumps, but with conventional copper ducts and restricted thermal dissipation, just no. Bad.
