As Link’s mom I totally understand the reason why an animal would be sent home if they’re stressed -which is why we were extremely happy with the service we did receive, and understanding when she wasn’t fully dry. Link hates the dryer at home and at the groomers, and doesn’t like baths & we try very hard to make a safe and calm environment when we bathe her at home. She’s okay with clipping nails and brushing but if already stressed and irritated it doesn’t work. Either way we love you and your videos Vanessa and you absolutely are a pro at what you do!

Thanks Trishani! This was of course not to be directed towards Links training, as many Huskeys are like this with the bath/dryer (as we know). Link was only used as an example of how a video may seem like I'm pushing through a groom on a stressed animal, when in reality I didn't actually complete the service and she went home still wet.

My parents have been working with their rescue pup, and we've finally figured out that when it comes to baths she likes a Volcanic Spa, not a Gently Warm Bath. If the water is hot enough it makes our hands uncomfortable, she melts right into it and let's us shampoo, condition, and rinse rinse rinse to our hearts' content. She's a happy pup. But at "normal" warm bath temperature it is *death* and "Why are you doing this?!" and "LETMEOOOUUUUTTTT!"
    🙄
And brushes and blow dries have to be done after the allotted Living Room Zoomies to get the energy out.

I had a similar experience with my dog. I was always told to use a lower temp with dogs because they have sensitive skin, but my dog definitely hates it less when the water is decidedly hot, though not quite volcanic. They do have a higher body temp than humans, so maybe that advice was incorrect? Maybe what we feel as warm on our skin is barely tepid on theirs?

When I was young my mum said I was rude and impolite. She twice sent me to camps (first when I was 8 or something, second when I was like 11) so the instructors could beat me up if I misbehaved. Looking back from now, yes I was kind of rude (probably still am sometimes), but after school she would have her driver pick me up and send me to her office. I grew up there watching her boss around her employees. How else would I behave? That was all I knew when it came to interacting with older people. 🤷

I worked hard on getting my dog used to being bathed, but I can't get her over her dislike for being brushed. I brush her every day, treats, etc, she just doesn't like it. The groomer thinks she has sensitive skin, so is okay with her being a bit mouthy when she's brushed. I did do bite control training, so she only grabs at the brush, doesn't bite down. Everything else is fine. Bathing, blow dry, nails, trimming. Just the brush bothers her.

You could try grooming gloves, they are gloves with rubber bristles on the fingers and palms so you can brush your dog while petting them. It tends to work for animals that don't like the act of brushing, as they see it more as being pet.

I tried latex gloves, the ones you get on a box at the pharmacy (equigroomers are nonexistent in argentina). Both my dogs absolutely loathe brushing but are fine with the gloves because I'm basically petting and scratching them but because the gloves are different to my skin hairs tend to stick more and my hands remain perfectly clean.
Both have short-ish hair, I'm not sure this would work with a long haired breed though

It’s very normal to see a dog stressed under these circumstances. They are not in control of the situation and they’re not at home with their pack/owners, and to top it off there’s lots of other dog smells it’s probably very overwhelming. They key difference however is that the dogs in your care are safe and are never in any danger. Once they get home they’re just going to forget about it and do what they normally do.

Likely the latter. I enjoy watching husky videos because I think they’re adorable, but they are high maintenance. I feel like choosing a dog that matches your lifestyle, and not trying to pick the cutest one, is just better for both the owner and the dog.

    • @VorAbaddon
      @VorAbaddon 2 года назад +8

Its the latter. Huskies are a working dog, high energy, high intelligence, and this makes them stubborn.
Most people either have no idea how much work it will be or dont have the time to give them the work needed.
Now, even a relatively well behaved husky can be dramatic and excitable/loud because of their high energy, but a lot of it is jus owners with NO clue what theyre getting into.

A dog being so incredibly stressed from normal grooming activities falls on the owner. Dog owners that have never had their dog groomed can't expect a groomer to work miracles.

My Bruiser comes from an abusive background. He's a Shih Tzu, so regular grooming is a must! It's very hard to find a groomer he resonates with. When our long time groomer went on maternity leave, she referred me to another groomer in her practice. I actually paid for 2 hours of her time for her to have a play date with Bruiser. They went for a walk, played in the park and throughout, the groomer engaged in physical activities similar to grooming so Bruiser would associate her with play. Best $100 I ever spent. I'm very invested in making sure my baby knows he's safe wherever he goes. I am deeply appreciative for a groomer that makes sure the dogs are feeling safe and supported.

My two Pomeranians, who are now fourteen years old have, been groomed regularly since puppyhood. They still do the shake and quiver dance before the grooming, then enjoy the pampering, until they see me, then act as if the water is acid. When I pick them up they are happy and ready to go home. The only stress they have is the getting to the groomers. Now my silver Labrador Retriever is an anomaly, she hates to get wet, but understands she has to be groomed every few months. Getting there and getting groomed, does not stress her at all, but she does hate getting wet ( I think Belledandy told her the water was acid). I have mad respect to people who groom animals, it is not an easy job. But oh the licks of love they get, that I am jealous of.

He's been trained for grooming? That explains the lack of opera singing.

I have a doggie that is utterly terrified of being bathed. She exhibits such high anxiety and fear that she almost hurts herself. I don’t wash her. I gave up because I worried so much. My last attempt involved an entire rotisserie chicken and her stress levels were so high that she wasn’t interested in even smelling it. As she is a rescue that was taken from a shocking abusive environment and I don’t know her history I have just accepted that she’s always going to be grubby! She’s happy to stand and let you give her a wet soapy washer ‘bath’ but no bodies of water.

why do Husky's make for bad Partners in Crime? They always start singing :)

The Huskey's panting is actually a stress response. So, no, I don't think he is experiencing this groom as "stress-free", but he has learned to tolerate uncomfortable experiences.

Also something people should take into account - corporate grooming salons are generally trash. I worked for one before I got to a private shop. We literally didn’t have time for bad dogs. We were overbooked, underpaid, our salon was not allowed to muzzle, the place was always dirty because we had poor cleaning products, we had a VERY limited amount of time to get dogs completed. Since the salon was in a pet store, we also had to deal with ignorant customers who knew NOTHING about grooming making complaints because they felt a dog was shaking too much or “looked scared”. Most corporate salons were in fish bowls where customers could see into the entire salon. This design was awful when we had difficult dogs or dogs that were easily distracted. Now that I’m at a private shop, the quality of my grooms has been so much better, everything is done in a timely manner, and we don’t have to accept shit from rude clients. Hahah

I used to take my rhotti puppy to practice sitting in the Vet's waiting room - with the agreement of the Vets of course. Just sit quietly, have some treats, leave. Repeat. Would it be appropriate to do similar with a young pup, and your waiting area?

My shih tzu mix is better for the groomer than she is for me. I recently shaved her because my mix of 7 breeds spent 5 hours swimming and “fishing” in the lake and was getting knots. I knew trying to brush those knots would lead to her biting me so I just took her down and got the knots out that way. But every time I’ve taken to her to the groomer they tell me how good she is! Ofc with the exception of her pads and nails. She’s a very dramatic shih tzu when it comes to that.
