as someone who is in the process of coming out to my family and friends, after coming out to a person, i find that i can be much more of myself with them and overall i just feel better about myself.

I'm convinced he uses the same defense mechanism as I do. If you're not completely certain you'll succeed, say and assume you'll lose. That way if you DO lose, you're already in a head space to be okay with that, rather than feeling completely embarrassed and incompetent. Less pressure to win also puts you in a more relaxed state, so you can think more clearly.
