    The first time I heard this song was in April of 2017 after my best friend for almost 18 years an American Eskimo dog named Sammy died from cancer. It was one of the saddest moments of my life. And I was remembering my Sammy and just listened to it for the second time just now 4/23. I still miss him so much.

    Rice displayed exceptional grit recording this song; no simple act standing up to share his voice alongside what is, in my very humble opinion, the most powerful and intoxicating vocal performance ever recorded. Doreen Curran is not one of us, she is something else entirely, and manages to redefine human potential in less than a single minute of song. This is one of the great hidden treasures of our generation.

    i have no words to describe how beautiful this song is... it just fills me with feeling, whatever that feeling is. just the way it keeps building and building until this voice just radiates pure beauty and you feel so complete... yet incomplete, b/c you know the feeling won't last, because the song will end eventually. i just sit listening to this music and i want to cry, which isn't uncommon when it comes to listening to damien rice... but with this song i feel like crying with awe. i have never been so utterly awed by something to the point where i want to cry, or actually cry for that matter. maybe its ridiculous that a song is what does that to me, but it just does... it sears right through my soul.

      music is my fav medium and some singers just have that presence and skill to bring me to tears, to me that is just proof how they can move me on a spiritual level, many songwriters admit they make songs based on personal experience and i can associate with that and feel through them my own experiences it sounds like you have that same ability as i do, good on you, would love to meet

    And I had known this song for so long...
    Anyway, strange meeting on RUclips, we get along surprisingly well, and I somehow end up wanting to share music that I like with him, who happens to be Finnish !
    So I was listening to Eskimo, and was like "that's it", and then I heard "minua" and looked closer at the lyrics and saw those "ä", and it made me so damn happy ^^ hahaha !
    Anyway, it was a very special song to me, but even more so now (': ❤

    There is a lot of speculation as to what Damien Rice’s “Eskimo Friend” represents. The singer-songwriter explained : “I picked up the guitar and ‘Eskimo’ literally flew into my head in ten minutes […]. I was sitting there feeling sad about not being able to write so I started to write about my feelings about not being able to write. Once that happened I have never tried to write again. I now don’t write songs. I just go to wherever I go to. It is like going to the toilet*. You don’t decide you are going to go to the toilet today or go to the toilet three times today. You just eat and the food you put into your system will decide when it wants to come out.”
    “Eskimo” (2002) builds into an operatic melody with vocals by Doreen Curran, an Irish opera singer.
    This is the last track on “O”, though followed by two hidden tunes : “Prague” coming at 7:07 and “Silent Night” at 14:09. 💙🎼💛
    * Isn’t it a crappy comparison (pun intended)⁉️

    I love this song. It is absolutely wonderful, especially the operatic verse. For those of you who speculate about the meaning, ask an uncircumcised man what is meant by the term "Eskimo Friend."

    3:18 - the end - this moment just kill me everytime! i have to underline that i don't like classical music like here some kind of opera. everytime i listen this moment it mixes so many different feelings - thats why i love damien and his music

    I think it's about the person inside your head you can rely on. Like the adult version of your imaginary friend. The opera lyrics translate roughly to "I miss my Eskimo friend". Implying that it's innocence and happiness that's been lost in the mire of adult depression.

    If you have a girlfriend/wife who always has cold feet, who always sticks her cold thighs against you to keep warm, who has cold hands that could freeze the heart of a penguin. That is your very own Eskimo Friend, make sure to always keep them warm, no matter how cold you feel...
