Asking Simon
- Who are you?
I'm a Canadian photographer from Ottawa who got rid of everything to travel the world. I make vlogs sharing my ups and downs, and my adventures in vans, on motorbikes, and on sailboats.
- Who is Champ?
Champ is my handsome 14-year-old Labrador, who travelled almost everywhere with me for his whole life. He loves chin scratches, fetching sticks, and scarfing down cheeseburgers and pizza.
- What camera equipment do you use?
I use a Panasonic FZ2500, a DJI Mavic Pro, a Rode video micro with Deadcat, a Zihyun Crane 3 Axis Gimbal, as well as DIY tripods and lights.
- What are your vehicles?
I drove a 1992 Dodge Ram B350 camper van all over North America for about two years.
Travelling by motorcycle made for some unique trips. I explored the Canadian Maritimes (and deserts and backroads all over the continent) on a 2002 Kawasaki KL250 Super Sherpa dual sport bike, and also rode my 1999 Yamaha V-Star XVS1100 cruiser with a Champion Escort sidecar across my home country twice.
From land to water travels: I currently live and work on a 1979 Wharram Oro 47 catamaran.
- What are your plans with the boat?
I will fix it up, run it on nothing but green electric power, and sail off into the sunset. Stay tuned for the growing build and the adventures to come!
- How do you find all these cool places we see in the videos?
To gain access to my complete research and the world traveller’s map I curate during my explorations off the beaten path, you need to hit me up on Patreon. Here are a few websites I frequent: freecampsites...., www.campendium..., www.atlasobscur..., www.couchsurfi...
- How do you afford your lifestyle?
I live and travel economical by using free camping and mooring, cooking my own meals, thoroughly researching products and how-to’s online, practicing a DIY approach, and being as efficient as possible with my resources. I've struggled financially for most of my life, and although I'm blessed with helpful friends and family as well as being able-bodied, white and male, I don't subscribe to the belief that you need someone footing your bills in order to pursue your passion. So, I learned that you DO need to sacrifice comfort, consistency, safety, and a traditional career but that it IS possible, worth it, and the only lifestyle that makes me happy.
I make my income almost entirely by creating content for RUclips, but it's a tight budget. Ad revenue, business sponsors, affiliate links, Patreon, Paypal donations, and merchandise sales bring in about as much as a part-time job, and I'm able to make that work. When it isn't enough, I go back to regular work such as photography, videography or construction, but that takes the focus away from my own projects.
- How does your dog fit into this lifestyle?
It's really not as difficult as people seem to think. I spend most of the day with Champ anyways, since we enjoy similar things, like eating food and being outdoors. I let the constraint of bringing my dog with me help me make decisions about where I go and what I do, so I avoid places that ban dogs, and therefore spend more time in nature instead of in cities.
- How do you make it work as a digital nomad?
My electrical power set-up allows charging my camera and laptop to film and edit almost daily. For Internet access quick and reliable enough to upload my episodes a few at a time, I use coffee shops and libraries. I also use a data package on my phone (10GB), a WiFi antenna, and a WiFi booster.
So much nostalgia seeing this place! I have happy memories from Gabriola. Speaking of which, Simon, we (Aladino and I) will be around that area again in January and February, and we we would love to come over, meet you, and help you with the boat for a few days. We have a RUclips channel as well about our sailing and boat restoring adventures, and it'd be awesome to meet another person doing similar things. I'll send you an email as well. Hope we can connect! -Maya
Ahh finally got around to looking up where it is: goo.gl/maps/rfeDFvSf6TJ2
It's always nice to see Melli :-)
Melly needs to read Clan of the Cave Bear. The first in her Book series before Valley of the Horses!
Bears island hop quite a bit. No problem making the swim.
Your home is your boat, but your boats home is Gabriola Island. Nice of you to have a book on the history of the island in your boat that is its home.
When you stood up on your truck the people were probably looking out of their windows. Look Ma Bigfoot is standing on a truck. And his Mom replied yes but Bigfoot has a girlfriend isn't that cute. Thanks for the tour Simon, that would be a lovely place to call home. Great choice of music for the day.
LMAO!
Yay! Day off with Mel. Great tour, thanks. Really pretty there. Nice ppl. Love that you got the book, and post cards for the boat. 😊👍
YEAH!!! Melly is back!!!! Woo Hoo Hoo!!! Simon, she is your future. Cherish Melly well. You two, have so much promise together. Cheers, Mate.
Well done Simon, very well done! Thank you for the support, and can’t wait to see more amazing content from you!
Awesome episode! We love visiting Gabriola! Nice to see Melly! Valley of the Horses is part of a series - I read it many years ago - and actually pretty good.
great episode Simon ! You film your travels well
That was awesome thank you 🙏 good to see Melli. Thanks guys 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦👍👍👍
That was very enjoyable! Thanks for taking us on a tour. Oh and tell Mel that if she enjoys that Jean M. Auel book, she should check out all of her other books which are equally wonderful! Especially "The Clan Of The Cave Bear".
And the unspoken love storry goes on
Hey Simon, nice video! Every few videos you mention “skylark” is this another sailboat you own?
Really enjoyed the trip around gabriola island , & it was lovely seeing melli again , she's got a lovely smile lol. Thanks for sharing .
Great video and great tunes. I miss champ and I know you do way more. I’m glad you have Melly. She seems really nice.
Tell Melli that the book Valley of the Horses is a part in the series Clan of the Cave Bear. A most excellent series that she needs to read.
Awesome mini-doc Simon! IDEA: A Vlog cooking show/playlist. When you make supper, shoot it, and post them separately. (Double your content ;) I know I'm interested in your culinary skills, and I've seen a few others post about is as well. There's prolly a ton of us live-a-boards and outdoors folk that are super interested in "one pot boat meals on a budget". It'd be a hit!
Awesome thanks. I'd love to visit. What are the accommodations like?
Hey,drop those bronze fittings into a solution of water and vinegar overnight and if you pull them out with any pink they're junk! Thanks Simon for the tour,I was curious!
I started keeping my lists on my phone because I too kept leaving them somewhere else.
Absolutely beautiful Simon and of course it's great to see Millie
Nice video man, really nice, and the mellow back ground music ...nice.
Beautiful place!
Well I definitely just fell in love with the island. Excellent music selection and great, personal tour. Thanks for this :)
One year! Wow.
Just think how much the last year, Gabriola and the boat have changed your life. So cool!

So happy to see Melly back! Looks like you live in a beautiful town!
Beautiful filming as always.
Love the videos... the music not so much but many youtubers do it
Hey Melli, thanks for the tour :)
Jean M. Auel is a wonderful writer, Clan of the cave bear is one of my favourite books, my grandmother gave me her copy of the book many years ago, it was her favourite, great video guys, what a lovely island 😁

Hi you guys. Melly that book is the 2nd in a series by Jean Auel. Start with The Clan of the Cave Bear. Love the island.
Clan was pretty Good, Jean Auel is a good writer with that series, only read the First and half of the one Melli bought, they were Good, just Not My Genre....
We love you and Melly together
I’ve only seen the island from the Vancouver - Nanaimo ferry and the highway from Nanaimo to Victoria. I really hope to visit it on our next trip to Canada though.
Thank you for the tour. What a great place, can’t wait for part 2 of the tour.
I'd be trying to work out how to get a steady supply of free turkey meat if i was there,my freezer is small but i keep a spare one on the boat
Nice one, rural but exotic and decent.
A nice and interesting island, I could see myself living there.
You look to be in a good place mate.
Thanks for the tour!
Beautiful place!
What? No Sasquatch? ;)
Building She:Kon fuk u
Looks like a fine place to live. The national bird of the U.S. is the bald eagle yet I had to travel into Canada to see them. Simon please give them directions and tell them to go home.
Uncle Muir , there are many places in the US where bald eagles thrive!
Awesome!
You found the orchard! Next time I'll be on Gabriola I'll definitely go there and try their cider! But no car break downs this time
I enjoyed your video, my grandparents lived on Gabriola for years. I spent many happy days of my childhood on its beaches! Haven't been to Canada in years but a peice of my heart is still there today!
Aw. Hi Melly, I missed seeing you. Yes it is as good as it gets, you live in a beautiful place.

Hi Simon, I really enjoyed this video! I have been born and raised in the Lower Mainland and as a kid growing up (born in '67) in the 70's, my Aunt and Uncle had a cabin over on Gabriola Island and they had a great ocean front property. We would usually go there once per Summer for an overnight visit. I remember how there was a bay area close by that was well known for abundant Oyster beds and I had heard that around the late 1980's people had literally stripped the beds and it was difficult to find Oysters there afterwards. It was truly "off grid" back in the 60's & 70's, they had an outhouse and had to have their fresh water brought in. I remember there being a park not far from the ferry dock that had a hand pump where people would go to get fresh water. Is that thing still there? I have not been to the island since the 70's. My Aunt and Uncle have long passed and his daughter inherited the property and they built a proper house on it. Thanks again for sharing this video! Cheers, Rick
Hey Simon, I'm a musician and thinking of heading over there. Is busking allowed there? Are there lots tourist on the Island?
Looks a great place to be Simon, the best company a campfire and good cider! And a boat that gets better by the day. Live the life mate. 🏴
Thanks for the island tour! It looks like a truly wonderful place to live 💚💙 love all your purchases of the day (is it weird that seeing those, more than anything else, makes me feel like id get along with you two? Hehe), those postcard look especially fun. Anyway, thanks :)
Been here lots my uncle had a csboin there for years. Have lots of awesome meories from my childhood this island. When it wasnt so modern . It was dirt and gravel roads rooads and tein beaches store. Had to Deive To silver Bay for groceries. And RCMP checked in by boat three times a week beautifully it has grown not to a beautiful place.
Grew up spending summers on Gabriola with my grandparents, very fond memories. My Opa and I used to walk to the same post office you were in every morning to grab the mail. Thanks for the great content
Great video to stumble upon! We are wintering in Nanaimo and headed to Gabriola island tomorrow morning to explore. Supposed to be a sunny day!
OOooooo, CIDER! Melli looks much happier, and not so tired... Helicopters are kind of Fun, but I always liked Planes Better. I flew out to Whidbey on Skagit Air, I think it was, we always called it White Knuckle Airlines, but I LOVED it. We met a B-25 on the way up. I hope Melly gets to come down and Hang Out for the Holidays. At least she won't fall through the deck, now... I know it's not funny, but it deserves a laugh NOW. I remember thinking, 'Dayum! Simon has MY Luck!' Stay Warm, it's COLD down here...
Finding Simon where is Gabriola Located and what country?
That was pretty cool Simon. Thanks for sharing.
Great episode Simon! I have been wondering about the island and the people there for some time. I felt like I was the third wheel on your tour! Always good to see Melli, and she puts a pep in your step too. You always seem happiest in your videos when she is with you. Everyone needs someone like that in their lives. :)
I don't want to have to come to your funeral!
So what the feck are you doing cooking over treated plywood and stuff when there is plenty of driftwood?
Bad boy.
Simon, thank you very much for the tour! I will definitely visit Gabriola someday in my van.
Hey Brother, great video with such a cool, mellow vibe. Peace. -s/v Wayward
I was on the coast just a few days ago looking at your boat in the bay. ;) Nice vid... Cheers!
Hi Simon, Can you please till us little bit about the life in Gabriola Island like House rent and find Job.

I'm still trying to convince my husband to go help you finish the boat; but I'll send you pants, I know you need pants :) Just tell me what size. I'm thinking 34/38? Let me know friend.
Yup I'm a 34! And thank you I always need pants.
Thanks for the tour. Have you ever run into Brent Swain?
Not personally but vern used to share a dock with him.
Thanks for the tour.
thats my dad in the camo coat
Loved this video :)
Superlike.
Overdubbing your talking face with music is awkward, uncomfortable and slightly annoying. You obviously don’t hold much credit in your filmed self.
