I just bought a house this past July. The water heater was installed in 6/2020, three days ago the water heater shutoff, I spoke on the phone with a technical support and according to they diagnosis it was the Gas control valve. They sent me a replacement and to choose a technician of my choice because they weren't able to find one in my area. Today I got the part but I'm eager to this job myself from watching this video in which by the way was helpful and to learn and since I'm a new homeowner why not learn some new skills. 12/03/2021 New updates: so I got the gas control valve replaced and the issue still persists. I had a friend of a friend an experience plumber take a look and he was not able to determine the problem ( I told my friend your, friend couldn’t even tell what the problems is ) so that left me to figure it out on my own. So long story short I called Rheem and lie about it told them the part they sent me didn’t fix the problem, my next guess was to get the pilot assembly kit replaced, They sent me the part and by the way they overnighted. 12/04/2021 follow up updates: Got the part today, put it in and voila worked immediately.
Thanks for your post. My water heater pilot lights, but the burner doesn't. I suspected the burner assembly was bad. Rheem troubleshooter thinks it's the gas control valve and is sending me one. Fingers crossed!
I’m in the same boat today. Call Reem and they are sending out a new valve kit. I hope it works and I don’t have to wait and get a pilot assembly kit also.
One thing that I would have liked to see in this replacement is some discussion and comparison of the new and old gas valves side by side before taking them away from the camera. My "under warranty" replacement gas valve for my June 2020 installed Rheem hot water tank arrived today. There is a heavy clear plastic sheath covering the double probe that goes into the tank. The valve didn't arrive with any instructions. The new thermocouple arrived with instructions but not the new gas valve. Does that plastic sheath stay on the probe or does it come off? I don't want the 125 degree F water heating the plastic and having it fall off inside the tank if it's supposed to be removed before the installation. Any information would be appreciated.
Did you replace the nipple/coupling at the gas control valve or clean up and reuse the existing one and apply pipe dope before screwing it into the gas control valve then connect the gas line?
I love these how-to videos. Unfortunately for these plumbers it's arming the homeowner with knowledge with step by step instructions on how to make repairs and fixes that they would never attempt, saving themselves $100's and even $1000's in the process. With some exceptions the internet has removed the curtain on how to properly and safely take on projects that were otherwise handled by a qualified and licensed professional. So for those with a little bit of skill and the courage to give it a go it's great that these videos are out there and easily accessible.
Complaining about home owner repairs. I replaced my gas valve on both my water heater, and furnace. Crazy tech wanted over 100 dollars to check my furnace once. It was spider webs in the gas valve. I have that exact valve. It just broke again, but I fixed it. The pilot wouldn't stay lit so I replaced the thermocouple. Same issue. Removed that wire thing where the thermocouple goes into the valve. Boom hot water until I replace that faulty valve again this week.
just got my replacement valve for mine which failed in January 2022 after October 2020 installation. i found a temp work around until i can get it installed.
You’re lucky. I change them at least twice a week. All SIT valves. I noticed that some of our tanks are now shipping with a White Rogers mechanical gas control.
Ryan, I have had 4 replacements, as of yesterday, burners since June. Plumber left at 11 AM And gas is still leaking. Buying another hot water heater not Rheem
My 2020 Rheem water heater gas valve just got replaced. The plumber who installed it (and replaced the valve) said that Rheem has said that there is an issue with the gas valves used on the 2020 water heater professional line. It was covered under warranty. Even though you don't like homeowner repairs, it had nothing to do with that issue.
Rheem told me it's a problem w/that valve & they're shipping me a new one. I'm looking for a workaround to get the burner lit one more time so wife/kids can shower. I've seen way worse installations by "pros" esp. in New construction. Yea, I love the channel locks. My water is hard piped w/copper & gas is steel w/a debris trap.
Had this issue today in Kalamazoo on a water heater I installed last summer also a Rheem professional . Installed by a homeowner as well !!! Me I own a home and a business 😂 I have seen worse installs man way worse .
I know that installers love hard plumbing the lines to a heater. In the end it looks good, takes some time so they can charge by the hour, and is pretty hardy in regards to feeling solidly installed. However, the hatred towards flexible lines is not fully understood. In what way are the flexible lines more dangerous?
We have the same heater installed about the same time, by a local HVAC company. Same sort of install, flex lines and all. The output line has been replaced twice because of leaks. The gas valve has not been replaced but it acts weird. Some days it's hotter than others. Not my house, I rent here, and I'm moving out soon.
We've had two 2020 Rheem water heater gas control valves go bad. The repairman said he's replaced 20 of these in the last month. Why the hell doesn't Rheem send out more "good" valves. They know it's an issue. Furthermore, our new tenant moved in 12-13, only to have it go out 10 days later...just before Christmas. What the fluck???
@@charissaJane call the Rheem 800 number on your water heater label, give them your water heater model number and they will check to see if you are covered. When I called rheem I received a new gas valve free of charge within 2 days. Good luck
I have one with mfg date. I believe the problem from what I understand is there is a white fuse which sits between the thermocouple and the solinoid. The fuse is crap. It fails alot and cant be replaced. This will not allow the pilot to light or if it does it wont stay lit for long. One video showed that a gut removed it, replaced the thermocouple and it worked like a charm. Its there in case the water reached 185 it will shut off the tank. I would thing the thermostat would take care of that. Heaters have been working without this for years. Probably just a CYA in case of litigation. Not very well quality tested
Our "Rheem" 40 gallon water heater is just like this one except it set up for propane. It's only 2 years old and the pilot light started to go out. I followed instructions in disassembly and the cheap aluminum line that goes from control box to the pilot inside the water heater , broke inside the box as if it were glued asides being tightend by the nut that holds it in place in the control box. I heard you mention something about recall , did l hear you right ? I'll look it up. So far all the videos l have seen are great and informative. The fittings and connectors all come apart as they were designed. I have no idea as to why my tube snapped (other than cheap, cheap aluminum material). Anyways thanks for video and if you know about recall let us know, these water heaters are up there in price. It be nice if a recall could cover us 👍
I always put dope on the valve. Why you ask? Because I don’t want to come back for a leak. Also, you say homeowner special but in my market here in Mid-Michigan, that tank would have been install just that way by Home Depot themselves; well their subcontractor. And let me tell you, they are WAY more expensive to do less than I am to do it in all hard pipe. Crazy. Love the videos. Keep it up!
yep, pretty standard "big box store" subcontractor install, upsell them flex lines, slam the tank and tail-lights! it's the only way you make money working for them "wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am"
I changed so many gas controls that I actually had a 6" nipple that stayed in my tool pouch. One of the inspectors in my area would have probably had heart failure over that install. Gas cock, clock, valve, venting and blow off pipe being cpvc. Scott would fall over coming out to that.
Plumbers installed a State water heater in my new house and it looked almost exactly the same as this water heater. They used CPVC on the pressure valve.
Great Video! I change the Valves when the water is is full , I'm sure you know about this , just relieve the pressure and swap it in quick! Those valves are junk , Whats wrong with flex lines? Thanks!

I ended up pulling out the 10 cent thermal switch / fail safe connector & as I pulled it out the wires ripped out of the end. So I just put 1 wire in the hole & the tip of the thermocouple in further so as touching the wire end & the base of the valve. The other wire I wrapped around the thermocouple just below the nut & taped it in place. I had to move the tip of the thermocouple around several times & try the pilot till it was just right & then my pilot stayed on & I carefully tightened the nut some. Still working after several months - no parts replaced.

Thanks for posting, I can install that part myself :) Rheem is sending me that replacement part for my Richman water heater. U are right they said on the phone there is a recall on that part, probably a fault solenoid inside? I first replace the thermocouple before calling Rheem. What a horrible install of the gas lines that homeowner did! I installed my own and used all the same gas piping, the only piece I had to replace was to put a new 3" black pipe that comes out the valve, I used yellow Teflon tape I was suprised to see the pre-taped part u installed didn't have yellow tape on it? I did use flex pipe for the water in & out since the new water heater has threads.
How long did it take you to get the part. I just had to pay a lot of money for a plumber to tell me that the valve was bad. Tank is only 1 year old. About to call Rheem to get a new valve and install myself. I wonder if they will contract a plumber to fix since they know about the defect?
@@patrickcoms193 Yep, they did say on the phone that labor is covered. I had just talked to Rheem yesterday they said 2-4 business days to send the part.
Rheem knows about this bad valves. I changed 1 that was 4 months old. Supply house heater. The valve was completely different. That valve will fail again
Hey, I bought my Rheem water heater in September 2020 and as of yesterday (10/22), the control valve has been changed 4 times Just read about a recall on the ring control valve. Went on Facebook and read 738 compliants about people having the hot water heater 18 months and nothing but problems. Rheem doesn't repair; they only replace the part. 10 year warranty my foot!
The gas control thermostat failed on my Rheem Professional Series too. Called Rheem and it’s a known problem. Gave them my serial number and the parts were sent FREE two day FedEx. It would have been nice if they would have sent out a gift card for the inconvenience. I know, too much to ask.
I started having issues after two months! At this point I think it’s about five months old now but looks like it completely failed. Graham said they are sending me a new valve out
Brother hook up a transfer pump, suck that water right out.gotta open a faucet or the top of the tank. I'll never go back to the one at the regular way huge Time saver
Oh. I should mention what I've discovered on why these valves have been failing, There is a sensor/circuit breaker that has 2 wires going to it that is between the thermocouple and the body of the gas valve. The sensor is failing and shorting out so the thermocouple won't make contact. When the thermocouple is shorted, the gas valve won't open when you release the "pilot" button. If you remove this sensor and the thermocouple makes contact inside the body of the gas valve, if you can then light the pilot light and it stays on, you have confirmed that the sensor is bad. I've tried to find out what that sensor is supposed to protect and apparently it's an anti-scalding feature if the thermostat fails to prevent the tank from overheating. A sensor can fail at any time without warning.
Rheem must recall the gas valve control assembly, it is always at fault. You can't live without heated water every nine to 12 months of the year! Could a class action lawsuit make Rheem to replace free of charge all faulty water heater gas controller? It is not right to replace the controller every 9-12 months interval even if it's free!
Agreed! Plus you get the part free but we had a company come out and say they wanted $600 to replace it. Unbelievable! Luckily I found a friend who does sprinklers that will do it for way cheaper thanks to RUclips videos...
I all ready did about ten of these suckers. Tomorrow I have another one inside a damn hallway closet facing side ways ....wish me luck lol no 30×30 inches here 🤣
I can't find what that thing does. I replaced my valve a year ago. The pilot went out a few days ago so I replaced the thermocouple. No dice. I pulled that thing out, and it works fine. Doesn't get too hot, and shuts down when it reaches the set temperature. I don't like messing with safety features, but that thing seems useless lol.
In the UK you are not allowed by law to fit or work on Gas appliances unless you are a suitably trained and experienced Gas Fitter. Looking at this install by the homeowner although it wasn't necessarily dangerous it was not installed correctly either and therefore could have been dangerous. How do you cover yourself when you are working on a 'homeowner special' where you have just installed a gas valve but are not happy with the way the boiler has been piped in , if it was a danger I guess you'd refuse to fit the valve? Thanks for the great video & have a good weekend.
if it was less than 1yr old it should be fully covered under warranty, including labor. that said they should have called Rheem directly to get it repaired by whomever is listed near them. they may be able to get most or all the labor reimbursed by calling Rheem still.
Yea that's the way it normally should work. But try to get a plumber to come out ASAP. You will be waiting a week. No hot water for a week. I do not think so. My plumber told me 3 days and then would take a couple days for part. I had to replace the gas valve my self. My valve went out after 6 months.
"It already comes from the factory taped, why would I put dope on it?" Cheap insurance, that's why. Unless you think a callback is worth not taking 5 seconds to throw a little dope on it.
well the flue will rott out before that because it's not done right and would never pass inspection. Great way to have CO poisoning. gas company would tag it here

@@taylorbilinski6865 Because code requires a dog leg to protect the valve, none installed here and flex lines leak over time from just vibration. Hard pipes dont. Hard pipes are substantially more resistant to being ripped away due to kids or other idiots messing abouts. This diy install is illegal.
Proper wrench doesn't fit on the valve FYI and even the manufacturer states to change the valve in this manner to unscrew the valve with a gas pipe. Also the owner is a idiot, his flue pipe install is illegal, which will cause CO poisoning and he has no dog leg on the gas line which violates code. Besides be a lazy home owner and using flexible water line that is way too long that will leak and rot his tank out. What is called a butchered install that will poison someone because it's not vented right

4 mths here here also
What is in the gas in Michigan for Gas Control Valves to fail?
Was that a leak on the gas line going to the burner at the gas valve?
It was smh
I thought you had the Milwaukee transfer pump?
Tank would be empty
Which one u use?

Hey, I bought my Rheem water heater in September 2020 and as of yesterday (10/22), the control valve has been changed 4 times
Just read about a recall on the ring control valve.
Went on Facebook and read 738 compliants about people having the hot water heater 18 months and nothing but problems.
Rheem doesn't repair; they only replace the part. 10 year warranty my foot!
I'm on my way to do this same job, tanks only 4 months old from install and also home owners special
Different valve on that Rheem than what we have in Canada
The gas control thermostat failed on my Rheem Professional Series too. Called Rheem and it’s a known problem. Gave them my serial number and the parts were sent FREE two day FedEx. It would have been nice if they would have sent out a gift card for the inconvenience. I know, too much to ask.
where can i get that gas valve is very hard to get
My gas water heater valve lasted 6 months. Called Rheem and they shipped me a new one next day at no cost. I am not happy with Rheem.
I started having issues after two months! At this point I think it’s about five months old now but looks like it completely failed. Graham said they are sending me a new valve out
I don't start bitching about a homeowner install until I see Teflon tape on the compression fitting
Based on this I'm happy I am going with BW over a Rheem unit. Any advice on which BW model to get?
My day is made because of the pleasure
Brother hook up a transfer pump, suck that water right out.gotta open a faucet or the top of the tank. I'll never go back to the one at the regular way huge Time saver
For draining I meant
Venting looks a little sketchy?
yep will never vent right and is illegal how it is done
I change them out with a full tank of water. Put an air lock on the tank and away I go
Why is it necessary to drain the tank normally? It doesn't seem like you're dealing with anything in the water path.
@@gbisaga well it depends sometimes it's good because if there is alot of sediment you can flush the tank.
@@matthewfasullo4983 That makes sense. We just had the plumber replace ours and he drained the tank. I just didn't see why.
@@gbisaga way I gauge it is say more than 10 years old or has no filtration system in the house its getting flushed.
Thanks man. Another great video many will learn from.
I agree this is crazy!
Plus warranty is out if you buy the house from a previous owner.
Agreed! Plus you get the part free but we had a company come out and say they wanted $600 to replace it. Unbelievable! Luckily I found a friend who does sprinklers that will do it for way cheaper thanks to RUclips videos...
Thank you your messages, my heat water problem like that .
I all ready did about ten of these suckers. Tomorrow I have another one inside a damn hallway closet facing side ways ....wish me luck lol no 30×30 inches here 🤣
The water is not clean and water pressure unstable, drain with air after the gas control valve is replaced. final, the lit won't stay on again,
Just pull out the sensor clip between the thermocouple end and the control valve next time. Much faster, cheaper and longer lasting.
@@mattalford3932 still working with the clip removed?
It's the ECO, cuts the gas valve out of it gets to hot and T&P fails.
In the states licensed plumbers are certified gas pipe technicians
Rheem is sending one and didn't even mention a technician. Just said there will be instructions in the box.
if it was less than 1yr old it should be fully covered under warranty, including labor. that said they should have called Rheem directly to get it repaired by whomever is listed near them.
they may be able to get most or all the labor reimbursed by calling Rheem still.
Yea that's the way it normally should work. But try to get a plumber to come out ASAP. You will be waiting a week. No hot water for a week. I do not think so. My plumber told me 3 days and then would take a couple days for part. I had to replace the gas valve my self. My valve went out after 6 months.
Warranty not working if you’re not the original owner.
As long as you register it within 30days of being the new owner. I just did it this week with rheem.
Homeowner here, I just replaced mine. I’m sure I did something wrong but I could use better info to not do it again.
Mine just failed after 5 months.
mine made it almost two years, hope the new part they're sending is better engineered?
Your tips was Great. thanks.
"It already comes from the factory taped, why would I put dope on it?" Cheap insurance, that's why. Unless you think a callback is worth not taking 5 seconds to throw a little dope on it.
Remove the faulty water 🌡 scalding fuse.....those are good valves.
I’ll have to try and locate it!
pretty sad that the gas valve needs to be replaced after one year....
Try install February, replace has control valve September. 6 months.
Me, 13 months.:(
Yep called to get a quote 1400 bucks for a water heater change out and get rookies that might do worse than the home installer home owner special.
You dident do your start up sheet 😁
Just a joke
These rheems are horrible. I got one in the end of 2020 and it died 4 days ago and still waiting for warranty to replace it
Do you need a plumber or can I DIY?
you can DYI it
Those 2020 control valves Uhg
The flex gas line and water pipe may not be the way a pro would do it, but you have to admit, it would still likely last the life of the water tank.
well the flue will rott out before that because it's not done right and would never pass inspection. Great way to have CO poisoning. gas company would tag it here
@@zack9912000 Didn't really notice the flue... Have to go back and look again.
Those flex water lines are known for pin hole leaks after 2 or three years…. I have witness them rust out the top of a brand new water heater 🤦🏽♂️…
You don't need to drain the tank just shutoff supply valve and bleed out the line.
You have to drain the tank, that valves sensor sits inside of the tank.
@@zack9912000 he’s saying you prep the new valve kill the cold water valve drop the tank pressure then water lock the tank... water loss is minimal a little hot swap saves time
@@drodriguez394 we do the same thing when we have to drain the tank. Replace the stock drain with a larger full port ball valve to drain it faster.
nope, didn't work. had to drain the tank. ball valve closed prv closed, water coming out with pressure.
drained tank, swapped out thermostat. all good
the thermo that came out had the plastic on it just like the new one did, so I installed the same way.
seems to be a step not mentioned by the guy poking at the "homeowner special" install
Nice work
Pipe dope is good.
Only if it's blue
Gracias amigo! Útil video de instrucciones!
so you didnt teach us why the valve was bad
home owners special 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Just because it’s new dose’t mean it’s good
That a weird looking gas valve don't look like the one I have
I hate slinky dink pipes
Why the hell would you not want hard pipe
And if your going to do junk at least strap the tank to the wall for support its really not that hard at all to do
Good work
Thanks for the vids
Why do you need hard pipe to the valve? And some places don’t require it to be secured to the wall, as well

@@taylorbilinski6865 just more professional
I guess
I mean all the ripples in that pipe causing havoc with the water flow
Hard pipe to the gas valve
Its just better
I'd have to check the code book on it
But let some kid get down there throwing a ball or chasing the dog whatever see how well that handles the test
Guarantee the black pipe will take it
That flex shit is for behind an appliance so you can pull it out
But when moving it around it won't stand the test of time
I can not count how many of them have leaked
Gas odor in the kitchen
Pull the stove out you'll find one of these with pinholes in it.
Cheap looks cheap and winds up costing more in the long run
When you have to replace it.
I've seen the same black pipe used over and over for many years heaters and water heaters

Nice to no longer pay for advertising
And nice knowing your work will live on beyond you
Appliance may not but your piping will.
I installed a water heater not long ago the house was about 80 years old all original pipes I had to change a nipel out because of the new water heater not because the pipe was bad

Why change what has been working so well for so long
Tried and tested true
Whats to improve on it
@@taylorbilinski6865 Because code requires a dog leg to protect the valve, none installed here and flex lines leak over time from just vibration. Hard pipes dont. Hard pipes are substantially more resistant to being ripped away due to kids or other idiots messing abouts. This diy install is illegal.

@@zack9912000 eh that’s not true lol my old man did the same thing in 2018 hasn’t died yet knock on wood still the same way today
@@drodriguez394 Well 25 bucks in pipe so it drafts correctly vs seeing if the cat dies or a family member. To each their own on that choice lol
Idk. I think installation is more important to have done professionally than part replacement.
I've replaced 2 gas valves in 1 yr Rheem selling garbage
Real "Professional" buggering up all the fittings because you didn't take the time to bring or use a proper wrench!
What is called a butchered install that will poison someone because it's not vented right
we dont work on that crap if not instll by lic plumber flex watr gas no good and vent is bad
