Thank you Michelle, I am sitting for the test in October '22, I am very nervous but doing my best to trust the process. There is so much information that I can easily get overwhelmed! Marilena's class is fabulous. I have been listening and relistieningto the modules which has been helping me really absorb the content. This was a great video. Thanks for all that you do.
Awesome Jennifer. Yes there is a ton of information indeed. Do what you can. You are in great hands with Marilena and I'm sure you'll do amazing! Wishing you all the best. Keep me posted.
When the eye of providence comes to you in meditation to congratulate you for completing the task, you are now certified through spirit. I like that more, but a certification from 3D world is ok also.
Thank you so much for sharing this valuable information and insight. My passion is to the moon for the fact that I had to work on myself for years to reach this holistic level of being and growing within myself. I took the step of taking the IIN certification course where I fell in love and now enrolled in the intense practicum to become board certified. You have truly brought practical clarity to me and more confidence towards my health coaching career. Thanks!!!
when you said that this will differentiate you from the real health coaches and those that say you don't need a certification and don't have one was like wow! I have watched a few that says that exact thing " you don't need a certification", but I personally wouldn't trust just word of mouth I need to see the proof of certification. I personally wouldn't trust a hospital or physician if I didn't see proof.
I do believe that certification can set us apart. The organization that certifies us through the National Board for Health and Wellness also certifies Physicians. It is a rigorous process and I believe brings credibility and standards to our industry.
"Hi Michelle! I just wanted to say how much I appreciate the amazing content you provide in your videos. Your insights are incredibly inspiring and informative. I'm planning to pursue a diploma or associate degree in holistic nutrition after high school, and I was wondering if you could recommend any online courses, institutes or colleges that would be the best fit for this path. Thanks a lot for all you do!"
Hi Afria. I am so glad you are finding my content valuable and I love that you have found this path so early in life. I can only comment on the schools I attended. For a good introduction to the field of holistic health and wellbeing, I recommend the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. They have a great general program and many continuing education courses. Wishing you all the best.
Thank you for your video Michelle I just had a question you stated at the end of the video that you Remembered all of the health and Wellness numbers and when you got to the exam you've wrote down all the Health and Wellness numbers can you explain what that means I'm currently in a course but I have no idea what you're talking about
When you go to the exam, they give you some paper and so you are able to jot some things down before you start the exam. This is helpful for all the things you have memorized, like the numbers. I wrote them down got them out of my mind and then was able to refer to the numbers when a related question appeared on the exam. Hope that helps to clarify.
Thank you for the valuable tips you provide, Michelle! I’m enrolled in the health and wellness coaching program at my local university and I’m planning to get board certified. My university class has only seven students including myself and is made up of 18-22 year olds (not the typical coaching client demographic) and then me (49.) How do I find older adult study buddies? I need to practice coaching and experience being coached by people with a little more life experience. Any suggestions?
Hey congrats for embarking on a health coaching career! I would suggest asking for practice buddies in facebook groups for health coaches. I would welcome you to do that in my FB community (link is in the description).
Thankyou for the information shared. I have completed course from iin but I want to give the entrance exam. But I have no experience in health coaching, means I didn't get clients. I do have physical therapy degree and have work experiences in my respective field. But as you said about certification, it seems a big process. Please could make a video of how to apply for health coach jobs in hospital or other organizations or companies?
Hey Neha. Thanks for your comment. To be honest, I don't have my finger on the pulse of the current job market. But I do know that if you are hoping to work for a hospital, health coaching company, wellness clinic etc, they are looking for board certification.
I have two questions. #1. I completed a year of Holistic training. I Received my completion document. With that, can I start my own practice? #2. You stated you need an associate degree or 4000h of any field. I have been a Certified Nursing Assistant for over 22 years. Would that be acceptable since it is in the health field? Thank you for your time.
1. You'd have to check with your school but I assume if you completed training, then you can practice. 2. Yes I believe your nursing work would count. I'd confirm with the NBHWC, they are very accessible.
Thankyou so much for the video. It has answered so many of the questions I had. I live in South Africa and the College we had here closed down🥲. So I will have to study online through the UK as I have a British Passport. I just didnt know where to get started and if there was going to be someone to help me 😍
As an RN I feel like a good way to start is to be Health Coach Nurse and if this feel rewarding and I bring high value to clients at that point I would want a certification. Michelle does that sound like good starting point?
There is a content outline (study guide) on the NBHWC website. For me the top two books were: Moore, M., Jackson, E., & Tschannen-Moran, B. (2015). Coaching psychology manual. Philadelphia: Wolters Kluwer. Miller, W. R., & Rollnick, S. (2013). Motivational interviewing: helping people change. New York: Guilford Press.
So other than being able to work in clinical setting, what is the benefit of being board certified? Is it that you are able to accept health insurance from clients if you were to go into private practice??
Great question - As an ex-mental health therapist, insurance reimbursement was the biggest thing I missed out on when I transitioned to life coaching. The good news is that in addition to having the NBHWC working toward insurance coverage, there are also some avenues for accepting HSA if your coaching practice is in a health-related niche. You need to look into a bit, but there are definitely options.
Hi Connie. I am not exactly sure but it is likely included on their website under the requirements. They are very responsive to inquiries as well so just drop them an email. It is probably something like a letter from an employer, employment records, resume etc.
You are welcome. Action planning is something a lot of coaches are great at. But without the motivation and the foundation set with your client they are unlikely to be successful. So important to learn the full behavioural change process.

Thank you for the information. I anticipate taking the exam in spring of 23.
Wonderful Teresa, wishing you all the best with it.

What about the NANP board certification? Or the health coach alliance? What school should I go to to be taken seriously?
I am not familiar with those other certifications only the NBHWC. You can go to their website to see a list of approved training programs.
As an RN I feel like a good way to start is to be Health Coach Nurse and if this feel rewarding and I bring high value to clients at that point I would want a certification. Michelle does that sound like good starting point?
Yes absolutely!
Wondering if you have one book that you'd recommend as the go-to resource to study for exam. Or two if it's too close to call, etc.

@@michellemaclean Thank you so much. I ordered Coaching Psychology Manual already (it actually arrived today!). I will order MI, too!

Yes the NBHWC is working on insurance coverage for health coaches.

Very helpful
So glad
Question- how do they verify the work hours you will have needed to accumulate to sit for the test?
You need to submit a log of the sessions.
I have an associate degree as a Medical Assistant,so can I take the California exam??
You'd have to check with the NBHWC to see if this is applicable.

Absolutley, take all the nuggets you need!
How much this cost ?
Please check out the NBHWC website nbhwc.org/ for all associated fees with becoming board certified.
How would you prove 4000 hours in any field?
Hi Connie. I am not exactly sure but it is likely included on their website under the requirements. They are very responsive to inquiries as well so just drop them an email. It is probably something like a letter from an employer, employment records, resume etc.
