When Graf played her best Martina had no chance. Best example are 1988 Wimbledon, 1989 Wimbledon & US open. Everything goes well for Martina but when Steffi lifted her game Martina look ordinary & that her biggest weakness. Martina was not mentally strong if she being pushed to 3rd set while Chrissy was far superior mentally despite have no major weapon.
You are absolutely wrong in your assessment! The previous year Martina defeated her here itself in the SF. Their age difference is 12 years & dat's huge in sports! In spite of that, Steffi had to fight so hard to beat her in those matches she won! Their rivalry stands at 9-9 ( H-H) Navratilova is leading with 25 sets against Steffi's 22 in their career statistics! Navratilova also defeated Steffi in 1987 Wimbledon & US Open as well as another epic US Open semi final which can be described as one of the greatest matches ever played!
Graf played really well but Martina was not moving well that day. She had lower back pain that day and you can see how gingerly she is running to the ball and putting her hand on her back.
Looking back Martina was the most unique female player ever. Maybe up there with Margaret Court. We will not see net rushers like them ever again. What an athlete.
Steffi got her revenge from the prev yr loss to Martina. I gotta hand it to Martina. I may not agree with some of her stances off the court, but there's no denying she changed the game for the better.
