This is so unexpected and wonderful at the same time. I am so proud of the man you have become, Mr. Roth. I am sure that Eddie feels the same. Thank you for this story.
Back in the eighties I was living in Fargo, ND and there was a fund raiser of some sort. Celebrities were asked to send in donated drawings of their own to auction off. Roth had donated one and it was a really nice sketch that I've always figured had been done for him as a favor by some artist friend. After all these years the mystery is solved.
There's only one David Lee Roth. A guy who truly has a love for life. Still jumping after all these years, participating in everything he can. It's called having spirit and being COLORFUL. Does anybody know what that means anymore? Or just take themselves too seriously? This man is a real inspiration for anybody who wants to "get into it," as he says.
I don't think you would ever experience boredom when you're in the presence of this man! Can you imagine spending even just a single day with him? It would truly be surreal! DLR is living his bestest life! Not very many people ever do!
This is why I love Dave he is fearless in the pursuit of life experiences he’s a rock star , ent, rock climber he should do a doc on all his life experiences outside of rock
I love that Dave is not lazy or towing the line with language. He puts thought and expression into how he communicates. This confused me for some years but now I think that it's entirely unique and he's utterly genius! Long live Diamond Dave..the jester and the king!
I absolutely LOVE THIS. Roth understands what so many people with money don't, money is simply a tool. As he implied, after you buy the big boat what's next?, just keep buying more? Why? For what purpose? Roth lives his life to the fullest. He does whatever he wants. This guy has traveled all over the world, and not just staying in hotel rooms either. He's studied different cultures, he's voluntarily become an EMT at one point, which is truly admirable, and he never seems to have lost his sense of adventure despite getting older. Absolutely love it. When Roth eventually passes away he will have lived the epitome of a FULL life. This interview was taped before Eddie passed away, and as great as Eddie was the only thing I disagreed with that the reporter said was about Eddie being the "heart" of the band. I think Eddie was easily the most talented musician of the band, but after Roth left Van Halen, and it was DAVE'S idea to call the band Van Halen if you'll remember, it wasn't really Van Halen anymore. I saw them in 1986 and I remember thinking to myself "it's over, it's done". That feeling of intense energy and abandon and throwing caution to the wind was gone. Eddie was playing keyboards for at least half of the show in 86', Alex was playing an partial electronic drum kit, and it was just...........like being deflated. I knew the REAL Van Halen was DEAD. My only solace was that I had grown up with the real version fronted by Roth and had been able to see them live. It was regrettable that Eddie died as young as he did, but not unexpected if you read between the lines of what Roth had said earlier this year about his health. And for those who will inevitably whine and complain about Eddie & Dave's relationship, or lack thereof, Tyler & Perry don't get along, Jagger & Richards don't get along (read Richards' autobiography), and Ozzy and Iommi clearly don't really like each other much, Ozzy just recently said he doesn't want to do anymore shows with Sabbath, but does it really matter? What these guys do/did together is what matters. It's ALL that matters. Van Halen have sold 34 MILLION albums with Roth as compared to 18 million with hagar. There is a REASON FOR THAT. That "tension" if you will, that drive to outdo the other from both Roth and Eddie is what made them so individually great, and in turn made Van Halen so great as a band. When I saw van hagar it was like Eddie was on auto pilot, and I'm sure it was partly due to the fact that he knew hagar couldn't possibly upstage him because hagar is not and was never a great frontman. No charisma. hagar is an everyman as far as the music world goes. Talented, but unmemorable. Whenever I saw Eddie with Roth in the REAL VH Eddie was different. He was MOTIVATED. Motivated to give a great performance, not wanting to be outdone by David Lee Roth. Same with Roth. And who benefited? WE DID. The fans who paid money to see them. I'm glad VH's last real concert was with Roth in L.A. It was fitting. It was in the town where they started, and where they finished. The way it should be. Eddie has his own legacy as a guitarist that is undeniable. Van Halen's legacy as a band will always lie with DAVID LEE ROTH. I've said it before, anyone who claims different is either naive, lying, or stupid. Or a combination of all three. If I could have lunch with any "celebrity" in the world past or present David Lee Roth would be at the top of my wish list. He's truly a fascinating individual who lives life to the fullest. Why does he still warm my heart every day???
What a character. Rock on mr. Roth.
Never a dull moment. The art speaks for itself. Bravo
What a long great trip it has been for you David! Keep on living the way you want to live Bro! RIP Eddie
Love his personality! Always thought Dave was the best singer Van Halen had!! I hated that he left the band originally and always hoped they’d get back together and tour near me...Glad Dave has been out there exploring life, and still connecting with people whether as an EMT or his wonderful art!! Love ya Dave!!! 👍💕😎
This is what I always loved about him. In the end he’s an art guy. Eccentric and weird and offbeat, but a force that can’t be stopped. Love ya Dave! 🤘🏻
His artwork is actually amazing! Nicely done, Dave!
WHAT A TALENT...!....It seems that Dave took seriously the japanesse culture as a part of his whole life.....including the way to paint as well like the better japanesse artist...!...SIMPLY AMAZING........!!
Alot of suicidal rockstars and retired athletes could take inspiration from Roth , alot of celebs get depressed because there bored of having all the materialistic stuff they ever wanted , whilst Roth is like I fancy learning about japanese art and throws himself to the deep and lives in japan for a few years out of his comfort zone , what a legend.
He's fantastic!!!!
Talented in both the visual and performing arts. Good to see he has used his rock stardom to further his personal development. Shine on you crazy Diamond, Dave!
He makes art on the floor, on his knees, hunched over. I'd never be able to do that; I need my tilted drawing table. Must take so much stamina and discipline. And I'm 12 years younger than Dave is, LOL. Respect.
Ya gotta love him!
The coolest Rock Star ever!!!ILove u Diamond Dave!!!!🎶💖RIP EVH🔩
✨💎 Diamond Dave💎 sparkles everywhere he goes no matter what he’s doing. He’s fun and fabulous.💎✨
What an amazing human you are Dave. Your existence has always been a source of joy that never disappoints. You are FIRE! Love you!
Dude is way more talented than I ever realized, but absolutely nuts, too.
Always great to see Dave back on the screen !
Fascinating fascinating artist. Diamond Dave is really just a small part of who this guy is. He’s brilliant and always did what Dave wanted to do
I have to chuckle. Back in the day I would fantasize about being DLR's girlfriend (or groupie). That's what teenage girls do when you see a beautiful man take the stage and I mean TAKE! Now I'm 53 and would like to make him a cup of tea and chat about his trip East and his art.
I'm 57 and could say the same. I was between 8th and 9th grade when the first VH record came out. I had a gorgeous, nearly life-size poster of David behind my bedroom door. I caught my mom looking at it one day. She looked at me and said, "I get it," and walked away. I was stunned! LOL His enthusiasm is infectious. Love him!
@@awarenessvillage He is still pretty awesome. I mean there really is NOTHING like him!
@@lisaclark1181 You got that right! All the best to you.
I'm 51 & I wanted him to be my dad.
So how old is DLR? early 60's?
I love him. Just love him. Always have always will. He’s a rare gem and I’m glad I’ve gotten to see him. Big monkey love to ya Dave!♥️
I ❤️ David ...such a beautiful soul
So awesome for David Lee Roth. Rock on and Stay Frosty!
I just wanted to keep listening to him. Who knew?! Still in excellent shape too!
Ya... The dark. It is the best time for art. But he said why when I could not... Thank you Dave.
We all love you dearly.
💖
Now this man has truly lived life.
God bless Diamond Dave! Love him or hate him, the guy is always entertaining. Plus, his art is pretty good. Thanks for all the great music 🎵
Dave’s amazing talent
People should appreciate him because he saved at least one life working as a EMT in NYC. ...
EXTREMELY COOL!!! I LOVED hearing about him being an EMT!!!!!!!!!!! LOVE that he is so grounded with art!!!!!! Would love a book!!!!!!!
That was shocking!
Diamond Dave 🤗 Will Never Quit Living Life On His Terms Rock On 🤘 RIP Edward Van Halen ❤️
“Nobody calls 911 to wish you a Happy Hanukkah.” 😂👍
That was great! 😂😅😁
Dave is the king of oneliners!
He's a very interesting and cool guy, good for him.
"It's great to see me, but not every year - like Family.
Haven't seen mine in 8.5 years.. LOL..
Diamond Dave is a National Treasure...
He was the perfect compliment / rival / antagonizer / instigator /fuel for Edward.
No Roth - No Van Halen
Its great 2 c me....but not every year....all my love Diamond, since the beginning in 79,the first time I heard ya .
David Lee Roth, forever the man.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

That boy is something else. Always has been💜
Still as captivating as ever! Keep on rockin'
Still love dave, he's as mad as a hatter, but a good human being! 👏🏻💙😎🎼
LEGEND
Beautiful story. Thanks for shining some light on the Diamond's amazing artwork.
He's always been a character played on a stage. Of all the things he has taken seriously, he himself was never one of them.
Dave’s life shows he is a lifelong learning. An example to us all
Thank you for this segment. Love DLR!
Man, that dude is something else.
Not only inspirational but his art is actually pretty damn good!
Yes. I agree. We will miss Dave when he's gone.
That is a one-of-a-kind man right there
And here I was thinking Bruce Dickinson was alone at being a renaissance man in the world of Rock n Roll. I stand corrected, he has the solid company of Diamond Dave.
That man has lived.
I just had an epiphany. Owen Wilson developed his whole persona around DLR's personality.
Cool. Good for him. He's certainly a well cultured individual
