Hi Jack, subscriber with cerebral palsy here. It's essentially a brain injury that can occur anywhere in the brain, and how bad the injury is and where it occurs in the brain is directly correlated to what it impacts. For me, I have all my cognitive abilities intact, but I cannot walk. This is due to a lack of balance for me personally I have the muscle and I can walk with assistive devices, but as soon as I let go of something I would fall right to the ground lol 😅 cerebral palsy is a massively different experience for everyone because of the different areas of the brain that can be affected. I've seen it impact as little as one arm being tight as in the ligaments and such and therefore pulled in toward the body all the way to a person not being able to speak, feed themselves, or anything. I'm not making fun because it's only by sheer luck that I'm not in a similar position. As it stands I was told when I was little that I would never walk and I recently went back to the same doctors that told me that when I was younger and they say now that there's no way I won't walk it's just a matter of when. But it's taken numerous surgeries, working out, etc. If you'd met me you wouldn't even be able to tell I was in a wheelchair unless I was sitting in it, of course. Been thinking of starting a booktube channel myself because there doesn't seem to be a lot of representation, but it is a little bit nerve-wracking because I don't love being on video. Love your content, though. Blessings to everyone! 🙏🏻💜
You should totally start a booktube channel! Adding your personal view and perspective on the books you’re reading will just make this space an even warmer and more interesting one: be brave and you’ve got this!💙💙💙💙
I bought The House In The Cerulean Sea because I had already read it but didn’t own it physically and I absolutely loved it so buying a book you already read is 100% Valid
📚Books Mentioned in the video - 01:40 - The Novelist by Jordan Castro 02:48 - Quiet by Victoria Adukwei Bulley 06:53 - The Art of War by Sun Tzu 07:53 - I Kissed Shara Wheeler by Casey McQuiston 09:18 - Just By Looking At Him by Ryan O'Connel 10:21 - Nevada by Imogen Binnie 11:24 - Almond: A Novel by Sohn Won-pyung 12:35 - Stories From The Tenants Downstairs by Sidik Fofana 👍 Leave a like on the comment if it helps. Thank you!
I kinda want to read it in English now, because I read it in Spanish and I didn’t like that much, that first time around. Wondering if the translation will affect the experience
@Jose Jones perhaps translation might affect it, and also, maybe the style of the books people enjoy. This one is definitely a more quiet introspective rather than plot driven.
The amazing thing to me about 18 miles of books is how many writers that took. I’ve always enjoyed writing, but can’t imagine writing an entire book. It blows my mind a little thinking about all of the people and all of the lives that are spent doing that. It’s incredible. Kudos to all the writers out there!
I have wanted to go to The Strand for literally almost 10 years and finally had a chance to go before a flight out of NYC last week. Truly heaven on earth. ALSO did some research and discovered that although they still use the “18 miles of books” slogan it’s actually closer to 23 miles now, at least according to Google.
Love the Strand. But, Jack. You need to visit Portland, Oregon while you're in the USA so you can go to Powell's books. It's the world's largest bookstore!
I very much appreciate the ad for a company like incogni. I took a class in college about the surveillance done by data brokers, government, and other entities and it was really very disturbing. Made me feel violated, and definitely made me want to take my information back
I've been to The Strand a couple of times because, before the pandemic, I used to go on long weekend trips to NYC. Just by chance, I am returning to that practice and will be doing a long weekend in NYC next week, and The Strand is on my to-do list since it's been some years since I've been there. Can't wait. Hopefully, I can stop by some other book stores as well.
I was screaming when Jack said he would read ALMOND.....I enjoyed the book personally and have recommended every body.....As a BTS ARMY I am so happy Jack is choosing this book to read...I can't wait to have the review of it from him 😇😇😇😇😇☺☺☺
Dominicana by Angie Cruz is my only 5-star of the year so far! I think I saw that it was on your TBR too. You should move it up on your list! It’s a stunning read set in NYC 😊
The Art of War is frequently used as a business guide to this day. It was great to see you in Elana Taber’s video with Nathaniel Drew, Damon and others. I am only halfway through the video and will have to see if you went to Damon’s book signing at the Strand.
When I lived in New York, I found so many books that you could never find anywhere. When I left NY, I took out clothes from my suitcases so I could fit my rare art history books .
I walk past Waterstones as part of my commute, today I couldn’t resist and bought some books, yes my wallet is crying now but they were your recommendations Jack so well worth it!
I SAW SOME LIKE IT HOT THIS WEEK!!! not a Sunday but wow what a coincidence. It was easily the best musical I saw, and I saw like 3 that week. I cried!
I haven’t been to the Strand in probably 25 years, since I haven’t been to New York City in about that long, but it is indeed, an amazing bookstore. It would not be hard to spend most of the day there. And as a fan of Ryan O’Connell’s show “Special,” I would be really interested to read a novel by him. I will be interested to hear what you think of his book.
I love The Strand! Their section in the basement with brand new releases in hardcover at 50% off is so awesome! I’m going to London soon and was wondering if you have a list of must visit bookstores. I have been to Waterstones and Foley’s on previous trips and want to diversity.
Hey Jack, I do luv Chinese Checkers. I bought a CD that had games on it years ago (obviously if I am using the initials CD) that had Chinese Checkers. You play with Avatar opponents of which you can choose. You can even select the level of back talk/smack you give and get from them. And if you don't like it you can give them a pie or boxing glove in the face. It also has 2 speeds of play. It took me awhile to figure it out with no instructions or understanding of defense. Haven't played in a long time. But I would love a game with you! lol. Luv yr channel btw.
Jack!! PLEASE PLEASE make a video on suga's book recs, or a part 2 for RMs book recs!!!! I loved the first one so much and the books recommended sounded so interesting. would love to see more 🤩
I had my eye on The Tenants Downstairs when I was in New York a few months ago! Intrigued to hear what you think of it. You should check out the Tenements Museum in the Lower East Side (I've been three times for three different tours), but their gift shop on the ground floor is amazing and full of New York-themed books, both fiction and non-fiction. I buy something every time!
i was waiting for this one!! speaking of books involving trans characters, i wonder if you’d like or have read outlaw by anna north! i read it last year and really enjoyed it! it’s set in the early days of the american frontier and it explores many aspects of gender and it’s expression
almond is amazing. I wasnt loving it at first and was confused bc everyone loved it?? and then I BAWLED at the end. im not sure if thats a universal experience or if its bc it was relevant to my life, but yes I BAWLED
There’s a significant amount of history on Harlem! You should look into it before you read- it boomed after the great migration and it was cultural and artistic hub in the 1920’s
Have got The Art of war and The Last Stop but have not read them yet. Did add Nevada to my wish list. Must also read the Road by Jack Kerouac as well. Thanks for your reccs, Jack!!
You should read 'Madonna in a fur coat'. It's from Turkish literature and one of the most popular books. I wonder what you thinking about it. I hope you give it a chance
you could do a youtube video where you "judge books by their covers". Basically you would go in a bookstore and buy a few books only by looking at their cover and not reading what it is about at all.
If you like a New York narrative ....you will love Christodora by Tim Murphy. Life in 80's NY, in the midst of the AIDS outbreak....amazing tale of a cast of tenants associated with this building.
Jack. Pls read six of crows. I promise its not cheesy YA. I know YA isnt youre fave genre but i promise you these characters have so much depth and complexity. I just need to hear you micro analyze it after.
You should do a series where you read books from authors from different countries. It would be so fun... I would say start from India ☺️. We have some gems in literature.
I actually found you through your RM video, and I'd love to see one where you read books recommended by Suga :). I feel like Namjoon likes reading books that evoke thoughts and make you question things, while Yoongi likes books that give him clarity.
Tbh i looved i kissed shara wheeler i read it shortly after graduating high school so in that context i could really relate to the characters worrys and asperations. So i think it is a great book of you read it at the right time. But of course everyones taste is different
I would not be able to do anything if I had my desk in front of such a view.
Literally

hi i have cerebral palsy too and just wanted to thank you for articulating this so perfectly :)
hey ! thank you for elucidating the variety of CP. I have cp as we!!!! 💚💚
You should definantly start a channel ! If you don't like being on video you could always do voice overs etc :) goodluck x
Thank you for sharing about your experience, I've learned a lot!

I have wanted to read this for awhile and finally broke down and bought it because of the pretty sprayed edges🤷♀️📖
I bought it 'cause the guy I have a crush on recommended it to me 🤷♂
@@DannX68 that’s also valid
ohmygod i did the same thing with House In The Cerulean Sea. Its such a comfort book

@@dace8828 You're welcome my friend.
"Almond" is one of the most popular books in Korea. I read it in a day. It was fantastic.
Can't wait to hear your thoughts as well. :)

"Oh my gosh, somebody said it ~ my question is, did anyone need to"? 😂😂 Had me dead! No dialogue like Jack's

I would love to see a video on books SUGA had read, I discovered your channel because of your RM video! 💜
me too, that video is actually the reason why I started to read 💜
I'm calling this my personal birthday gift from Jack and no one can stop me. Thanks Jack.😊

Thank you for picking up the book about a disabled character! I feel like our experiences with disability hardly get centre stage anywhere
Very sweet that he reaches out to other creators to ok it with them before making a similar video. Lots of love Jack x
Love that you mentioned Cari! I watch her videos all the time. You two should make a video together ❤

the amount of times I've gone there between classes, set a timer for 30 mins just to look around and then have to return to school... my poor wallet
The fact that I was there like a week later and all the displays were totally different is very impressive.
Love the Cari shoutout! The strand is incredible, I bought a used copy of Mama’s Boy there and it became one of my favorite books
You read such amazing unique books and awesome authors and so proud of you Jack 😊
I would also recommend The Women of Brewster Place by Gloria Naylor, if you like the idea of interlinking stories set in the same building!
Jack, there is also a signed edition of Red, White & Royal Blue and it contains an extra chapter from Henry’s pov
I was screaming when Jack said he would read ALMOND.....I enjoyed the book personally and have recommended every body.....As a BTS ARMY I am so happy Jack is choosing this book to read...I can't wait to have the review of it from him 😇😇😇😇😇☺☺☺

I love The Strand! My sister got brain freeze when we went in and couldn’t remember any of her favorite authors. Too funny.
Stories from the tenants downstairs sounds unusual love that can’t wait to read it 😊

you're going to LOVE Almond! I've read it two years ago and I still think about it every once in a while
i love the Strand!! there’s so many unique books there
I certainly appreciate the addition of a book about disabilities! We need more of those!
Almond is one of my favorite books ever! So good! I can't wait to hear your thoughts on it
Jack asking the real questions about The Novelist :))
Almond was such a great book, hope you’ll do a suga’s book recommendation video as well!

The New York Public Library would be a great video :)
Jack visiting different branches of the NYPL would be an amazing series.

The Strand is the best bookstore! I miss their stand at the Bryant Park holiday market.
Did Jen just says "sysiphean task"? I love that!
9:24 the way I JUST started reading it yesterday
I'm absolutely not jealous!
OMG A SUGA BOOK REC VIDEO I NEED IT IMMEDIATLEY
The thumbnail and the title had me in a chokehold and I don’t want to let go.
How on earth does Jack read so many books? It's March and on Storygraph it says he's read 57 books already. Someone spill the secret! Lol

The Art of War is actually from about the 5th century BCE :)
Why is it that my biggest takeaway from this was the adorable debut authors sign with a little chick 🥹
I wish i had this bookstore here in Warsaw
As someone with cerebral palsy who has never read a book that even mentions my condition....I'm buying it right now!
Okay, Jack. You have not seen a messy desk until you have seen mine. It's a miracle I am able to function it's so bad most of the time.
“My question: did anyone need to?”🤣🤣🤣
almond!! such a good book, hope you enjoy it :))
I’m visiting NYC for the first time in October and The Strand is top of my list! 📚
you could do a youtube video where you "judge books by their covers". Basically you would go in a bookstore and buy a few books only by looking at their cover and not reading what it is about at all.
I think Suga is a very interesting person - it would be cool to see you read his recommendations!
I love how you split your channels between your two hobbies: reading and buying books… and honestly I feel seen, go off
I love Chinese checkers! I learned as a child by playing it with my grandfather.
If you like a New York narrative ....you will love Christodora by Tim Murphy. Life in 80's NY, in the midst of the AIDS outbreak....amazing tale of a cast of tenants associated with this building.
james joyce would likely be proud and terrified of ‘the novelist’ iykyk

if you ever go back to the strand, you should get some of the "blind date" books. I always try to guess them and so far, I've only got one correct...
Happy st Patrick’s day 🍀
The Houseguest and other Stories by Amparo Dávila is very worth it.
OMG!!! That show was executively produced by Mariah Carey! Glad you love it!
You should read tomorrow, and tomorrow and tomorrow it has Korean representation in it !
ooooh please do make a video about Suga's recs!! i became a fan of yours after i stumbled across your RM video
Would love to see you do a reading video of Suga because his taste is quite different than Namjoon, who's a heavier reader. Almond is a great book.
Tbh i looved i kissed shara wheeler i read it shortly after graduating high school so in that context i could really relate to the characters worrys and asperations.
So i think it is a great book of you read it at the right time.
But of course everyones taste is different
I also think it did enemys to lovers perfectly
THANK YOU HJACK IM GOING TO NYC NEXT WEEK
