  • Previously on this column, we learnt about how an anxiety disorder is diagnosed in an elderly population. This week, Dr Hegde talks about how it is treated after a diagnosis - the types of treatment available, how medication is prescribed and the dangers of over-the-counter medication.
‘Anxiety in the elderly’ is a weekly video column about geriatric anxiety. In this column, geriatric psychiatrist Dr Soumya Hegde gives the viewer a thorough picture of anxiety in the elderly population. Including, the kind of anxieties they deal with, the symptoms of the anxiety, its diagnosis, treatment, and what caregivers can do to ease the elderly persons’ discomfort.
Dr Hegde specializes in the management of challenging behaviors in dementia, and other complex psychiatric presentations in the elderly population.

Very informative and on point. I am a senior and have suffered from anxiety/depression for many years. Many years ago I was on medications and they helped tremendously. When my situations changed and I felt better, I was able to get off the medications, almost completely. Years have past and now I feel I need the medications again, I will not hesitate to take them .
It is tough, but there is help for us so take advantage of it. I wish you all the best.

This video is very informative. People our age tend to rely on medications and pharmacological treatment in order to treat their anxiety fast. However, it was also mentioned in the video that older adults must also take care of their whole wellbeing such as sleep, nutrition, and establish relationships and friendships around them. It fairly reminds me of our coaches in reviving mind as they encourage people our age to prioritize the their wellbeing in order to reduce anxiety.

Isolation, no one to call - the real issues aren't dealt with. Probably there's no way to deal with them because it requires community and there is none so all feelings (which are natural under such isolated conditions) are pathologizes.
