I've been on the edge of making & Designing my own boards for awhile. This chunk of awesomeness is what Holds a lot of people back and I don't think I can give you as much praise as you honestly deserve, But Huge Thanks from me sincerely. I'll Be donating when I can. I have a Shapeoko xxl CNC and I'm hoping I can create either a foam mold or a wood mold eventually. Thanks again! Keep it up.
Much thanks, currently 3d printing a mold created on sk8cad. I have never pressed a board, but have faith that I can make one or many with a decent press. I can't afford a cnc or have the room for all the equequipment i really need. But I'm looking for a minimalist, small scale approach. This gave me the first step to start the journey with open source user friendly freedom. Your awesome, Thanks again.
sk8cad is SO important for small time deck makers like me, it's not just useful for building molds... I use it to create templates for new deck shapes!

I found your channel recently and think your Idea of sharing the developement of skateboard mold is just great! A lot of knowledge involved I think a lot of people don't realise how much effort you have to put in to make useful mold that will last and press a proper deck. Back in the day I made a plywood male mold and vacuum a corksheet on top to get an offset. From that part I cast a concrete mold for the female in it worked great. Great work and keep it up !
I'm curious if routing the deck shape with the tool head keeping parallel to the router floor instead of following the contour of the deck itself has any ramifications beyond the edges of the deck not being square at the nose and tail. Great job.
Thanks! The CNC I have access to is only 3-axis, so I can't test that out, but, my guess is that it won't make a noticeable difference, unless you are doing your routing and cutting in the same process, like I've seen in some HLC videos: instagram.com/p/Cc2fntHgJXl/.
Thanks! Yes, you can make longboard molds. I've never made a snowboard and am not very familiar with the process, but I imagine if you set 0 concave drop, large kick radii, a long wheelbase, and short nose/tail lengths, you'd end up with a snowboard-shaped mold.
It depends on the shape of mountain board you'd like. I think mountain boards usually have more complex curvature than what SK8CAD currently enables. However, I am using Patreon to raise funds for additional capabilities that may help with mountain board design (Patreon link in the video description).
Sweet set up. Mere mortals might try plaster casting a good deck to get their first set of molds. One could rough cut and laminate plywood the way you did for the bulk of the mold and plaster to fill in the surface.
