HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) and HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) are both protocols used for transmitting data over the internet, but they operate in slightly different ways.
HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol):
HTTP is the foundation of data communication on the World Wide Web.
It is a protocol used by web browsers and web servers to communicate and exchange data.
HTTP operates over TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol), which is the basic communication protocol of the internet.
It is a plain text protocol, meaning the data being transmitted is not encrypted. This makes it susceptible to interception by third parties, which can compromise the security and privacy of users.
HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure):
HTTPS is an extension of HTTP with an added layer of security provided by SSL/TLS (Secure Sockets Layer/Transport Layer Security) encryption.
It ensures that the data transmitted between the user's browser and the web server is encrypted, making it much more secure compared to HTTP.
HTTPS is widely used for securing sensitive transactions, such as online banking, e-commerce transactions, and login credentials.
It operates over the same TCP/IP connection as HTTP but adds an extra layer of security through SSL/TLS encryption.
When you visit a website using HTTPS, your browser establishes a secure connection with the web server, which encrypts the data being transmitted, protecting it from interception by unauthorized parties.
Trust: SSL certificates are issued by trusted Certificate Authorities (CAs). Web browsers and operating systems come pre-installed with a list of trusted CAs, and they display a padlock icon or the word "Secure" in the address bar to indicate that the connection is secure.
