I took the plunge and did this cut. As soon as I got done, I started crying! I have RARELY had a good experience with a professional cut and haven't been to a salon in almost 10 years. I have never cut my hair myself other than trimming my bangs. I had tons of dead hair on the ends and I cut off quite a bit! (4-6 inches in some places.) My hair was really long, but not pretty. The end result of changing how i care for and style my hair and then doing this cut was totally transforming! My hair now frames my face beautifully and my hair is curling so nicely without all that dead weight at the bottom. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I'm over 50 years old and have never loved my hair as much as I do right at this moment.
Same here! Its been over 10 years since I've had work done on my hair and its was sooooo dull. Now its full of life and I'm looking forward to it growing healthy.
Right? Aside from one stylist my senior year of high school, who moved on after my second cut from him, I've never had a haircut I liked as much as this one.
I’ve just don’t this cut on my unruly curly locks. I did mine on dry hair and couldn’t be bothered washing it as had already done that today. Great video and easy to follow.just waiting on it drying to see the results as I wet it afterwards to get my curl definition back. If it’s not completely how it needs to be I will do it again wet. Fingers crossed but may need to put the pigtails in a little higher.great video❤️👌
For those (like me!) who keep coming back to this video: 4:30 - Cut begins (bangs) 6:38 - Layering 9:00 - Shaping the back 11:11 - Finishing touches/face frame
Mell you’re a star! I’ve just cut my wife’s hair using this technique. Best cut she’s had for years . She’s spent a fortune at the hairdresser and they never get it right . I’m the perfect husband now 😂😂😂. Thanks again x
This may come across as a weird comment and if so, I apologize. I was raised in an 'inadequate' environment which is the nicest way to put it. I just turned 50 and always straightened my hair because no one else in my family had curly hair except for my father. No one was ever able to teach me how to take care of my hair so i always hated my hair and it really made me feel bad about how I looked. I'm getting ready to go on a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine so I knew I had to learn how to take care of my curly locks so on a RUclips search I found your videos. You are so patient and nurturing and I've learned to love and embrace my curls, not hide them and i wanted to thank you.
❤ Ne too, except ten years older, and not about to go to the Appalachians!! I still haven't plucked up the nerve to do this but I am learning about my hair. Long time coming.
For anyone using this video and you have really thick hair; when I put my hair in the ponytails on the sides I split the ponytail half top and bottom and I cut the bottom first and then used it as my guide for the top part of the ponytail. It worked perfect! I hope this helps😁
It’s been 6 months since my 1st curly girl cut and my strands needed some attention. I tried this pigtail cut and the results were amazing!! I had nice layers in the back & around my face. I just saved over $200 and my dyi cut looked better than my salon cut. Thanks for all that you do!
@@ManesByMell, is there a way to cut the perimeter using low pigtails, especially if we don’t have high density hair? I’m trying to figure out how to cut all of my hair myself but can’t figure out how to do the perimeter. I like a full/heavy perimeter and not a v in back.
I hadn't cut my hair for almost 2 years and was dying for a cut. You're a life saver. Watched the video, grabbed the essentials and while in the shower, washed, combed, tied and snipped away. The relief was so real. Done!
a lot A LOT of stylists claim to be "curly hair specialists" the rest. will reassure you they are trained experts. i dont trust any if them anymore. They love to thin and layer and chop. Which is cool is you like to look like a triangle. This lady Id trust. I never let people with straight hair cut my hair anymore. In all honestly I've been cutting it myself for a few years
I agree 100 percent!! Every "SPECIALIST" has created a poofy, spiraly mess and created inner layers which I always tell them not to. I cut my own as well.
Amen! I finally got a post quarantine appt with a "curly hair specialist".... Almost $200, and I'm SO upset. My hair looks awful and will take months to grow out 😫😥 I'm saving this video because my next cut will be by me!!! (Via Mel) UGH! (She even dragged the scissors straight down the edge of multiple pieces throughout my head, essentially thinning out my already fine curls!!!)
Just did impulsively your haircut. It's 3am. Turned out AMAZING. I lost confidence in my hair in the last few years, terrible haircuts, zero hair care (depression made me think that taking care of myself was stupid.. So stupid idea). Now I'm trying to take care of myself and my hair like I used to, also thanks to your videos, so you are very very appreciated (sorry for the English, I'm Italian)
After watching this more times than I can count over the years, I finally worked up the courage to do it and I’m so glad I did! I genuinely don’t think I have ever had a haircut this good. Each curl is laying perfectly - thank you for explaining things every step if the way.
Love this cut! I was terrified to give myself my own curly cut… umm IMMEDIATE lift! A few ringlets came out out of hiding, so much volume at the roots… and I got my first curly compliment from a stranger today. Seriously 🥰 watch it twice then watch it again as you do it. You won’t regret it! Thanks Mel!!
Do you part your hair in the middle or the side when cutting? I did it in the middle for the cut but I wear my hair as a side part and it turned out bad. It's not clear in the video as she did the middle part so I assumed we have to as well?
@@reenysparrow6452Her hair wasn’t in the middle, it was off center. Also she made this point pretty clear by saying at 4:30 to part it where you usually style it
@@kuuja4053 that was for the bangs though, right? A couple minutes later she says to split it into two equal parts evenly down the middle for the bulk of the cut and shows it from the back, so I also am a bit confused about what should be happening at the top of my head during the main cut, or how I should do it differently if I don't have bangs.
Love the way you mentioned how hair can take a few washes to settle after a cut . I always hate my hair after a cut and then 2 weeks later I love it! I thought I was crazy ! 😂
I grew up with curly hair that was frizzy instead of curly because my mom (love her) didn't know what to do with it except try to control it with pink sponge rollers. You taught me how to love my hair and how to make it shine. I found your channel a couple of years ago but just today tried the pigtail cut because the weight was all wrong and I was desperate. Now it's pretty again!! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!
I tried this cut today and just let me say.. Awesome!! This really worked for my 2c/3a hair. I had tried the unicorn cut a few times but after awhile I realized I was missing the layers in the back just like you showed at the beginning of the video. Thank you! Love your videos! 😊
@@peachiepeachie I got a pro cut yesterday and now my hair is way shorter then expected with chunks that are longer since she didn't cut my hair right. I trimmed my hair a few times and noticed I need my hair dry for a cut. She got my hair soaking and cut my really fast, was talking more than doing.
Really enjoy your tutorials. I have done this cut to my hair twice now. The first time was super petrified so I only cut a teeny tiny snippet off. This time, I cut about almost an inch off for my layers, and cleaned up my ends. This is so much better than the unicorn cut, which I have done before, will never do again lol. When she says mullet, that is what I had to deal with the last time I did the unicorn cut, and it took six months for my hair to grow back. This cut is perfect for my 2c to 3a curls. I keep my hair just longer than my shoulders, so this works great for me. Thanks
I swear we have the exact same hair type and length - I too, am petrified of cutting my hair because mine is just above my shoulders, so I was wondering if when you cut just a little bit off, what were the results like?
I have fine, curly hair and have NEVER even thought of cutting my own hair! I have been going through some financial hardships and am broke as hell! After months of going back and forth I finally tried this cut today and I'm so happy with the results. YOU ARE SO FUN, PROFESSIONAL AND KNOWLEDGEABLE!!!! Thank you so much for this, and all of your, demonstrations.
Oh my word!!!! I tried this at home and it came out so good! I was so scared, but I did just an inch, and it came out so good that I'm thinking of trying it again in a week or two to take out another inch! I didn't have professional shears on hand, but I'll definitely be purchasing them for all my future cuts. It's so simple, and no more wonky salon cuts!
I have natural wavy, loose curls and swim at least once a week in a chlorinated pool- any sort of hair oil like Moroccan is great before swim or leave in conditioner. Also I have invested in conditioning hair masks for when my hair is thirsty and leave it in for 10-30 mins ;) hope this helps
I just put up with it, I try to make my wash days around my day off when I plan to meet friends and relax. I keep my hair up high when I wake up so the sweat doesn’t go into my curls, dry shampoo and dampening the hair with a micro fibre towel and just rescrunching does that trick. It’s not gonna be perfect and you shouldn’t worry too much
Omg you SAVED ME!!! I haven't cut my hair in 3+ years and it was starting to look really frayed and uneven so I was about to travel to another city for a pretty expensive cut since no one in my city cuts curly hair the way I wanted it (like this). All the photos were of really short curly bobs and I didn't want to lose my length or risk months of growing out a bad haircut which is what has made me stay away from anyone else but me touching my hair in almost 15 years. My hair looks AMAZING!!!! I'm so excited to style it down everyday now instead of constant pineapples
For reference, I have fine 3c/4a curls and I just finished cutting my hair following this tutorial (but left my bangs untouched). You just saved me a 3 hour trip and $100+ bucks. Thank you so much! I cut less than an inch and it made such a big difference. I’ll never pay for a cut again.
@@nataliedelcampo19 I parted it down the middle for the cut. I usually wear my hair with a middle part or left part. It looks good both ways, so I think parting it down the middle was the right choice for me.
I'm not really afraid of cutting my hair, no fear of losing length or things like that. But I am terrified of hairstylists that know very little about curly hair giving my hair a weird shape/cut that I don't know how to fix. I live in a place where curly hair is really not desired and is generally straightened. So I've been sitting with these dead ends on my hair (the last cut was nearly two years ago!), and then I stumbled upon your video. When I say this cut SAVED my hair, it's no exaggeration! My hair feels light and bouncy... Also, this is (HANDS DOWN) my favorite haircut that I've ever received! And you (and I!) did that! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!!!!
Alexandra I started trimming my own hair last year. I literally became obsessed with trimming my hair that I ended up with a Bob and had to hide my scissors lol!! Fast forward to this year and I've been afraid to trim my hair again so it's gone from a bob to shoulder-length and I'm definitely trying her technique because I desperately need a trim!! With curly hair, even if you mess up, it will grow back and you can do protective styles!! I grew mine back with 2 braid protective styles or loose bun. Good luck.🤗🙏🏼🙏🏼
@@aida087 I have a tip for you. If your goal is to grow out your hair faster. Trim it on a NEW moon, along with the protected styles. I dont know why but it works, my grandmom did it for gardening, crops, her hair, her nails anything that grows and needs to be trimmed for new growth to come in, it was done on a new noon cycle. Try it with your toe nails, trim them on a new moon and see it they grow faster then usual. Good luck❣🍒
I would suggest following either her hair cutting style or her sisters in a diff video and just taking off a small small amount, just to get some confidence in it because honestly when you take your hair back down it really doesn't take off any length. I've been cutting my own for years it just takes some confidence, practice and patience and you'll be great ❤🌜🌹✨
Thank you so much for this tip. Although I was hesitant, I tried it because I needed a shape for my hair. I have had very bad experiences with haircuts in the past. I live in a small town and it is difficult to find someone to cut my 3c/4a/4b hair without losing length. I'm happy to say that it worked and I am now finally happy with the shape of my hair. You make great content! Keep up the great work! :)
I ended up doing the pigtails cuts and I really liked how it came out. I now have short layers in the front but more longer layers in the back that are in a U-shape. It was a little uneven on the bottom so I just cut some hair off to make it more symmetrical. Overall, I really like it!
The red on the tips…. Ma’am, I absolutely love you that was such an amazing visual. As a girl who’s trying to embrace my curls, but is very scared to go to a stylist thank you thank you thank you ❤
THANK YOU! I just gave myself a $150 haircut on my own and how I’ve actually always wanted it cut and layered. This was so easy to follow. My hair was down to my butt and unlayered due to Rona. Now I have the cut I’ve always wanted. Thank you! All my volume is back. Big hair don’t care! ^_^
@@samanthathompson9812 i followed this tutorial and cut off almost 6-7 inches of my hair. And lemme tell you, the best decision ever ! It gave a bounce to my hair, nice layers and frames my face nicely. I've never been more happier with a haircut. So yes this haircut works well with cutting a lil bit and more if you're ready to take that leap ! ,😁
2-3 months ago I followed her unicorn cut & my hair looked so much better & healthier for a while. But as it grew out I started to realize it was a great cut @ a shorter length for me. However, I'm growing it out & need a different shape. Wouldn't u know it, the pigtails addressed the ticket!
Tried this method today and LOVE the results! I've been cutting my own hair for 6+ yrs - and have been so much happier with it since. Mel's pigtail technique left me with a nice even, rounded shape. Love u Mel!
Best haircut I’ve gotten in years!!! Best of all I did it myself. My curlz went crazy curly with this. Got a bounce I’ve haven’t had in years! So happy. A fan here !
My mane girl Mell! Thank you so much for this video. It was so easy to follow and really perfect for my fine, loose 2c and 3b curls that are the same length as yours. I only took off about an inch but what a difference it made! It came out really even and made my curl pattern spring back into action. Like WOW. Salon cuts are a thing of the past now. You’re right: no one knows my hair better than me, including how I want it cut. And you know what else is a thing of the past? I’ll tell ya: paying $165 for a Deva cut and feeling meh about it! Thank you thank you, a hundred times thank you! I love you and all your videos. I’ve learned more about how to care for my curls from you than I’ve learned from everyone else put together. I’m 51 and have never felt better about my hair or more empowered around caring for it. You’re a curly haired Angel 👼😘
Manes by mell thank you for this video my hair came out amazing. After so many years of not doing my hair because of domestic violence .I feel beautiful again . I'm now a pretty survivor thank you love. The smallest thing can put a smile on some one face 🙂
I tried this haircut and I LOVED it. I did a customised haircut because I used the video with Amanda's haircut to cut my *bangs* . Then I used this video to cut my *lengths* . The end result was super bouncy, light and didn't take much length off ⚡💙💐 Thank you so much. You are the only curly girl I trust.
I’ve been so tired of hairdressers who don’t know how to cut curly hair, and also curly hairdressers that charge an arm and a leg for a cut, that I decided to try cutting my own hair AND THIS VIDEO WAS AMAZING!!! Cut my own hair today for the first time ever and I have to say I think it was a raging success. THANK YOU SO MUCH MELL!! Your video has excited me for my future home haircuts where I save money but also time being anxious about how the hairdresser will probably cut it wrong 😂
I was just about to ask if it worked on wavy hair! I'm trying to cut my daughter's wavy hair and I did the unicorn once and it was ok. Then did it again and it did not go so well 😳 ...I'm just about to try this one today!! *Fingers crossed*
I have been cutting my own curly hair in between trying to find a stylist who can achieve my "vision" for more years than I care to admit. This technique was game-changing! I LOVED that you dyed the ends so I could see where the cut would be if I did the "unicorn" cut. Like many of the others I tried this and am amazed how well it works! After using the pig tails, I made a few final tweaks, and my hair looks amazing. Thank you so much for this tutorial!
This video has saved me thousands of dollars, i swear! i turn it into a curly scene kid cut by doing 4 pony tails instead of 2 so the top is a little shorter and rounder and it's the best thing ever!
Just tried this today......and all I can say is THANK YOU!!!!! My hair looks amazing!!! 👏🏼 I had so much dead hair and split ends, now it looks and feels so healthy. I sent before and after pictures to my mom and sisters and they were so impressed!
I have NEVER commented on a RUclips video BUT this is brilliant!! I just did this cut on my 2B/C curls and my hair looks a MILLION times better than any salon visit in many years 🙏
Hey Mell, I just want to thank you so much for changing the way I see my curly hair. Because of you I have learned to love and properly take care of my hair after a total bleach disaster. I love your chanel and the way you explain things like no other youtuber, in my opinion, has done. I was wondering if it's possible for you to address how to properly plop in one of your videos. I noticed you rarely plop but is this something that one should do after or before applying a gel? I'm always on go so ploping for me is a must to reduce dry time. Again thank you for being you and being in my opinion indispensable to the curly hair community. Also happy Birthday 🎂
A plopping video would be great. I plop for about 30 mins afterwards. Trick is to add a little extra gel to your hair after plopping to make up for the products lost in the t-shirt. Works like a charm.
I don't know your texture and your porosity, but you can give a try to every type of plopping! I have 2c-3a fine curly hair and I think I have low porosity and for me works best using a very little amount of cream distributed on my hair, microplopping with a cotton t-shirt and then "close" the hair with a gel. You can give it a try and see what happens! :)
Oh my goodness I did it lol.,.,. I thought it was going to look horrible but it’s actually looks nice lol,. My curls are soo bouncy ., thanks to you Mel. Happy birthday.,.!
My 2B hair was growing out heavy and I needed to add layers. This was the perfect cut! Curly haircuts where I live charge hundreds of dollars for even a trim, and this was such a perfect cut to freshen up my hair without losing much length. I did need to do the last step in 4 sections (parted down the middle, then top and bottom) because my hair is too long and thick to do a whole half of my hair. Thanks!
I just wanted to say a massive thank you to you Mel! After many many many years of chemical straightening, I discovered my natural curls 2years ago and have been trying so hard to bring it to life coz as you can imagine it was very damaged! I finally lay my flat iron to rest too a month ago, and struggled to adjust to life without straight hair. Today, today...I followed your pigtails haircut tutorial after weeks of deliberating and deciding between it and the unicorn cut and giiiirrrrllll, IM SO GLAD I CUT MY HAIR YOUR WAY, IT LOOKS FABULOUS!!! I FEEL FABULOUS LOL!! THANKS SO MUCH!!!
I just did this and it came out awesome!! My husband loves it, too. I have such hair issues right now. Terrible itching scalp for over a year, so I have lot of breakage. And have not been able to dye my hair, so lots of grey. Have been cutting my own hair since before covid. Just wanted to do it myself. Have seen lots of vids for diy haircutting. So far this is the best one. So thank you! This was a huge blessing!!
Mine try Apple cider vinegar with Bragg and water 50/50 mic on your scalp. Leave on while in shower bath. Helped my itchy scalp. I do it once every two weeks
Thank you so much 🤩💜. I will be trimming my hair frequently now using your pigtails method. I had 55cm (21") of hair with dry, split, & stiff ends. So I cut a good 7-8cm off (3"). Now my hair looks fresh, shaped, & healthy. Curly cut specialists are a rarity in Australia and charge +/- $300 ($225US). I've lost my trust in professional hairdressers after losing half my length on several occasions. It's been 2 years since a professional "trimmed" my hair. I'll never need one again 🎉
I trimmed my own hair at the beginning of quarantine and got a little too scissor happy so it’s muuuuch shorter than I’d like, but I’m definitely using this for next time! At the moment, I’m trying to grow it out and figure out what’s wrong with it so I can rebalance it and get the definition and shape back together 😂 note: Just made it to the end HAPPY EARLY BIRTHDAY, MELL!!!! THANK YOU FOR BEING THE BEST CURLY TEACHER THERE IS!!! YOU DESERVE SO MUCH MORE THAN YOU HAVE NOW!!! I HOPE IT’S WONDERFUL!!! IM GRATEFUL FOR YOUR EXISTENCE!! SORRY IF THIS WAS TOO MUCH!!! 🤩✨🤩✨🤩✨
I just FOLLOWED step by step but with my hair dry, because I thought it would make more sense in my 4a/4b hair, and 😱 IT'S AMAZING. It was so easy (and fun). Great video. Thank you so much 💕
I've never cut my own hair before. I got a horrible hair cut when I was little by a "professional" ... Chopped off all of my beautiful curls .. one side was noticeable long than the other by a couple inches. Never let anyone cut my hair for 13 years afterwards. I did end up letting my hubby cut my hair since and he does a good job but I felt my hair was flat and needed a trim. I'm still terrified of getting my hair cut but I took a chance and I'm so happy I did!! I'll be cutting my hair like this for years to come!!! Beautiful! It's exactly what I felt my hair needed.
I'm amazed by the results! I never had such a beautiful haircut from the salons. I actually cut longer than she did which is already close to the tie because I wanted my hair to sit on my shoulders. And it worked perfectly fine! I'm never going to the salon ever again! I'm forever grateful to you!!
I did this haircut today and my hair turned out PERFECT! i also used thinning scissors at some parts to go easy on the fluffing situation and i love love love it! :) thank you!
This gave me the cut I've been trying to get for years. The layers are perfect, the face framing is perfect and the V at the back is perfect. Thanks for the tips.
Yesterday i did myself a realy Bad Hair Cut😱🙏..Then i Watched this Video...and tried your Cut😍🥰👌..thank you for this Video...you rescued my curls from a realy Desaster 😱🙏...and i never will Cut another Methode like this..👌..its so simple and works great...i Love IT❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
So I took the plunge and just tried this. It's in the process of drying and like she said-my curls are freaking out a bit from the shock. My hair was really blunt and heavy before. Even though the curls are being a bit wonky, it still looks like it's going to become an amazing haircut. Thank you Mell I'm so excited!!
MELL!!! I did it!!! I can’t believe how good my hair looks!! It has just the shape I’ve always wanted, always told my stylist I wanted but never quite got. It’s bouncy, it’s soft and rounded, I can’t get over it! Thank you so much!!!
Sara Elmorshedy I cut it dry, because I tend to do mostly wash-and-go’s. Since I wrote this I’ve made some minor adjustments to the top layer length and the shape at the bottom. Still loving it!
Yes girl I’ve had the same stylist for years and she refused to do layers because it would make me “frizzy” and the one time she did it is the best my hair ever looked but she’s old and forgot or something. I can’t wait to try this! I’ve got nothing to lose at this point!
I’ve been trimming my hair since the end of last yr. I wish I knew this type of technique. I do the unicorn trim every other month and now I see why it doesn’t come out exactly how I would want it. Def trying this technique next hair trim
@@bettyb1581 Really? It's two pony tails, pulled straight out to either side and ends snipped straight. It's not any harder than the unicorn one. And she literally billed it as an "easy" cut.
I have been agonising over trying this..... I don't go to the hair dresser ... every time I go the mess my hair up. I haven't been in 3 years . The time before that was 8 years .... I just cut my own hair using your method ... and Holy cow I am beyond happy . I have no words . Thank you for sharing , you are awesome . 9 inches gone and I feel freaking great
I just recently embraced my curly hair and I'm 55 years old. I've been watching your videos and even trimmed my own hair based on your tutorial but my question is about gray hair. I haven't colored my hair in 25 years and don't plan to, but sometimes my grays can get crazy, kinky and frizzy. What products do you recommend for gray curly hair?
I am in the same boat with Teresa (below). I moved back to Cali four years ago and as a result, lost a terrific stylist. I wasn't in a hurry to find a new one since many people don't truly know how to cut and style curly hair (even though they think/say they do). Now it also seems like no one in my area has availability. So I've basically just been doing bare minimum with my own trim from time to time, and almost completely neglecting any deep or regular conditioning regimen. So yes, my hair is a hot and sad mess, and after seeing this video, I'm feeling up to the challenge of the DIY cut! Mell, you really do make it look so easy. Thank you so much for sharing your tips and insight about doing it yourself. I can't wait to get started and see what sort of curl revival I can muster from my drab, lifeless mop. Wish me luck! :)
Well, I can't believe it, but I was able to do this and cut my own hair and it actually has never looked this good since my hair texture changed ten years ago. Crazy. You are fantastic!
So, I took the risk as well and did it! Right now I've got my hair plopped in a t-shirt and wait for it to dry a little. Wet it looked really nice, so excited to see what it'll look like in a bit when it's dry. Thanks for this great tutorial!! Edit: It worked and looks amazing! Will definitively do it again.
My hair is plopped in a shirt now too! I’m really nervous because the last time I cut my hair I cut my bangs a couple months ago and I pin them back under my hair because I don’t like how thick they are😅 so now I took the risk and cut my hair and if it turns out horrible I’ll literally cry💀😭

Wonderful video! The instructions are straight forward. I have used this method twice, and love the results. Much better than paying someone to do it wrong. Thank you, Mel!
You seem pretty happy, Mel. That's great because I know you were unhappy with your work/life balance for a while there. Happy birthday! Be happy! And have a wonderful time! Also thank you for all your videos! You and my 12 year old daughter have the exact same hair and having her watch your videos had really helped. Thank you, thank you! You're FABULOUS!
OMAGAA Thank you❤❤ !! . I am 45 yrs old and NEVER had a good experience at hair salons. It took over 7 years for my hair to grow from a short Bob to med length, down my shoulders. Early this year I got the courage to get layers, downloaded plenty of pics to show the hair dresser, told her I didn't want to loose too much length and BOOM shoulder length!, I almost cried. Now 6 months, I was feeling depressed, hated my hair, I was having an awful time styling it, looked flat, no shape, hated the style. Then I saw this video, and I HAVE BEEN SAVED!!! 😆. I was ready to cut it all off!! I can't thank you enough Mel!! ❤❤❤
Gah! I tried this for the first time and I had great results! My curls and waves needed a little love so I cut off about 2 inches using this method...I went to my hairstylist a month later for color and she was so impressed with my at home cut! She said I did a fantastic job and that she didn't even need to trim my hair! Score!
Happy Belated Birthday, Mel! May you be blessed with many more years of success and happiness and may you continue to inspire curly girls throughout the world. You have certainly inspired me!
It worked!!! Even on my looser curl pattern. And it looks way better than professional cuts I had been getting. It’s such a positive boost 💓 Mell, you’re the best. Thank you!!!
I am 35 years old, I have gotten many haircuts from many different stylists that could not style my curly hair properly. It had gotten to the point where I just don't bother getting haircuts anymore. My hair has grown out very, very long. My problem is that I have fine curly hair, it easily frizzes and I was losing the springy locks that I always loved. I just tried this after my shower today, my springy curly locks are back with a vengeance! My hair looks amazing! I am never going to get butchered by a hair stylist again until I find an expert like you, hopefully someday!
I have to rave about this haircut for a minute! I wanted to cut my hair for a longgggggg time but was scared of messing it up. Finally my hair got to hip length so I figured I’ll start with just taking a little off and if I mess up I’ll have plenty of wiggle room for someone else to fix it 😅 The first time I did this cut I just took off 2 inches. My hair was soooo happy. Then a few months later I wanted a big change so I did this cut again but took off a LOT (I like the V shape so the top of the V was about 7 1/2 inches off and the bottom of the V was around 4). I love it! And now 3 1/2 months later as it’s grown out my curls are the happiest they’ve ever been! Thank you for sharing this awesome cut! 🎉❤
My question is... After your hair is dry and you see the "weird curls" sticking out, hanging longer than the rest, You cut them off. But how do you know those same pieces of hair will do that next wash? I hope that makes sense.
@@ru8yjean Exactly! I recently got one of those "curl by curl cuts". It looked great when I left the salon. But the next wash day, it was A MESS! Different shape in one side than the other, and the back is flat then full at the top. I have 3c hair and it's unpredictable.
You don't know. For me, my curl pattern changes daily, so that's why I'm always hesitant to get haircuts. Typically, a persons hair is not just 1 type ( e.g. 3b ) but 2 or more ( e.g. 2c-3a ) and that makes curly haircuts so hard. But I doubt cutting a wee bit like she did would affect you hair much; I would caution with cutting anything past 2 inches though since you could notice that.
Just cut my hair like this and loved the results!! My curls finally got to bra-length but they have been tangling easily, curls clumping together no matter how much I separated them, and limp for months no matter how much I clarified, deep conditioned and used moisturizing leave-ins and sealing oils on my ends!! I also have your curls pattern Mel and my curls literally sprung back to life lol, thank you for sharing!!❤️🥰🙏🏼
I finally worked up the guts to try this tonight, now I wish I had done it forever ago! It has been over 10 years since my last cut, I have literally never had a good salon experience. This was so easy to follow and gave my very thin 3b/c curls the perfect amount of shape and volume. Thank you thank you thank you!
Cannot wait to try this! I hate going and getting my hair “trimmed” at the salon. They always claim to know curly hair and end up cutting of way too many inches.😩😭😩😭😤😡 So I’ve been trimming my hair for a couple of years with just a straight cut. Cannot wait to get some layers!!!🌈🤙🏼 Mahalo and Aloha from Hawaii🤙🏼🌈
I must be strange, I like shaggy mullets! The pigtail cut will create a longer front and back but the sides will be shorter. This might sit on your shoulders better, but may not be what everyone wishes to achieve. The reason the end result looks okay is that you took such a small amount off the length, then went back when it was loose and reshaped, not everyone could do this. If you took two or three inches off the length and didn't do the final reshaping, this cut would look odd. The unicorn cut can be a one cut and release style and still look good. Any tinkering is done for preference. I prefer the front to be shorter and face-framing, and the back to be long; which is achieved by the unicorn cut.
I agree - I wish she did the paint experiment with the pigtail method as I think that would convince me. I like the smoother shape that the unicorn gives and I’m not a fan of the bowl-like fringe that this one gives, tbh this is more mullet-y than any unicorn cut I’ve seen.
@@alligator985 This is only due to the fact that Mell's hair was already quite short at the front and hence trimming it further down makes it look more mullet-y as you say. For hair such as hers, the unicorn cut would have made her hair even more mullet-y than the end product of the pigtail method. It's just how it is with some curly hair. Though it's your hair at the end of the day and maybe you could try both out one day and see which one suits you better ^-^
You are my fave right now … we have similar hair, use the same products ❤️ and you EXPLAIN EVERYTHING and I love that. I live in ATX and there are no curly salons I am willing to trust here. So starting this DIY journey after 3 yrs with no cut.
So thankful for this video, cannot find a proper hairdresser for my textured hair where I live so I am happy I found your videos. Cut my hair and even came back to cut it shorter 😁, I love the shape and structure 😍 Thank you! Keep shining ☀️
I can’t wait to cut mine 😭😭 nobody here knows how to cut curly hair properly except expensive salons which I’m too broke for.
It sounds like you did a good job! I’m happy for you
THE FACT THAT I WAS JUUUUST ABOUT TO DO THE UNICORN METHOD AND YOU SAVED ME
You're lucky. I did the unicorn then found the video🥴

Mell you’re a star! I’ve just cut my wife’s hair using this technique. Best cut she’s had for years . She’s spent a fortune at the hairdresser and they never get it right . I’m the perfect husband now 😂😂😂. Thanks again x
Sweet husbands are the very best!

😂that is awesome!
The red dye demonstration was really eye-opening!

For anyone using this video and you have really thick hair; when I put my hair in the ponytails on the sides I split the ponytail half top and bottom and I cut the bottom first and then used it as my guide for the top part of the ponytail. It worked perfect! I hope this helps😁

Thank you!

It’s been 6 months since my 1st curly girl cut and my strands needed some attention. I tried this pigtail cut and the results were amazing!! I had nice layers in the back & around my face. I just saved over $200 and my dyi cut looked better than my salon cut. Thanks for all that you do!
I’m so glad I could help❤️❤️❤️

I never let people with straight hair cut my hair anymore. In all honestly I've been cutting it myself for a few years

Deadass so tired of hair stylists fucking me up and me having to fix it myself
I agree 100 percent!! Every "SPECIALIST" has created a poofy, spiraly mess and created inner layers which I always tell them not to. I cut my own as well.
This comment summarizes all my haircut pain
I've been trimming my own hair ever since quarantine started and I don't think I'll ever get a professional trim again lol
Same they come out better than the only curly hair salon near me 😂
I’m too scared to try but I need to cut it sooooo bad!

I know it’s been 2 years but this is the single most helpful and relatable comment I’ve ever read
Why did my hair look better after doing this, than after a $100 hair cut?
Omg thats so freaking true!!!! Lol lol lol

@@helixjac2394 it is like they put more of an emphasis on the conversation. And yes....u r right......always way too short!
One thing I haven’t found is how to care for your hair after swimming and going to the gym. Can you do a do’s, don’ts, tips and tricks?
She’s got a work out one and a summer one which involves swimming
this is my problem!!! GOING TO GYM WITH AFTER A PERFECT EXPENSIVE HAIR CARE (pls i workout 5 times a week)
I’ll never pay for a cut again.
did you part it down the middle or kept it the way you usually style ur hair 6:44
@@nataliedelcampo19 I parted it down the middle for the cut. I usually wear my hair with a middle part or left part. It looks good both ways, so I think parting it down the middle was the right choice for me.
I have the same curl pattern as you so amazing to know, thanks! 😊
Finally! A way to cut bangs that isn't from a middle part! I'm a "side parter" so THANK YOU!!!

Hey Mell,
I just want to thank you so much for changing the way I see my curly hair.

At the moment, I’m trying to grow it out and figure out what’s wrong with it so I can rebalance it and get the definition and shape back together 😂
note: Just made it to the end HAPPY EARLY BIRTHDAY, MELL!!!!
Your haircut tutorial is amazing on my 2b,2c, 3a curls. Thanks a ton Melissa 😘
How did it come out? :)
@@yohnaleleu9171 it turned out pretty good! I'm giving it a week or so until I refine anything just to my curls can fully settle but I like it!
MELL!!! I did it!!! I can’t believe how good my hair looks!! It has just the shape I’ve always wanted, always told my stylist I wanted but never quite got. It’s bouncy, it’s soft and rounded, I can’t get over it! Thank you so much!!!
Did you cut it wet or dry??
Sara Elmorshedy I cut it dry, because I tend to do mostly wash-and-go’s. Since I wrote this I’ve made some minor adjustments to the top layer length and the shape at the bottom. Still loving it!
Yes girl I’ve had the same stylist for years and she refused to do layers because it would make me “frizzy” and the one time she did it is the best my hair ever looked but she’s old and forgot or something. I can’t wait to try this! I’ve got nothing to lose at this point!
My daughter and I successfully trimmed our own hair. We look awesome, layers are great and it was so simple. Thanks so much.
I’ve been trimming my hair since the end of last yr. I wish I knew this type of technique. I do the unicorn trim every other month and now I see why it doesn’t come out exactly how I would want it. Def trying this technique next hair trim
This is more complicated for a non professional
@@bettyb1581 Really? It's two pony tails, pulled straight out to either side and ends snipped straight. It's not any harder than the unicorn one. And she literally billed it as an "easy" cut.
I have been agonising over trying this..... I don't go to the hair dresser ... every time I go the mess my hair up. I haven't been in 3 years . The time before that was 8 years .... I just cut my own hair using your method ... and Holy cow I am beyond happy . I have no words . Thank you for sharing , you are awesome . 9 inches gone and I feel freaking great
This was actually perfect for my 3c/4a hair. Thank you so much for all your help! You helped me save over $105 CND.
“A garbage beeg” 😆 seriously the cutest curly Canadian in all the land
The fact that I haven’t been to the hair salon since you posted this video literally thank you 🥰
I just recently embraced my curly hair and I'm 55 years old. I've been watching your videos and even trimmed my own hair based on your tutorial but my question is about gray hair. I haven't colored my hair in 25 years and don't plan to, but sometimes my grays can get crazy, kinky and frizzy. What products do you recommend for gray curly hair?
Great question

Thank you, Mel!
so true, I spent 90 on a cut just before christmas no comparison to this method for free . . ..
Score!
Music to my EARS friend!! GO YOU!!!
Happy Birthday to the person whose videos motivated me to be proud of my natural curls. Love from india. 🇮🇳
I hope that makes sense.
i cut one bit of my hair so short and it sprung up so much and then i washed it and it was wavy and then i washed it again and it was 3b 😭😭😭 so girl
@@ru8yjean Exactly! I recently got one of those "curl by curl cuts". It looked great when I left the salon. But the next wash day, it was A MESS! Different shape in one side than the other, and the back is flat then full at the top. I have 3c hair and it's unpredictable.
@@hackbattle4283 same
You don't know.
@@hackbattle4283 so unpredictable it’s annoying
Tired of leaving hair salons disappointed so I think I'm giving this a go. I always thought the unicorn method looked a bit random.
This is the most even and quickest haircut I've ever given myself. Thank you so much for the great tutorial!!
They always claim to know curly hair and end up cutting of way too many inches.😩😭😩😭😤😡
So I’ve been trimming my hair for a couple of years with just a straight cut. Cannot wait to get some layers!!!🌈🤙🏼 Mahalo and Aloha from Hawaii🤙🏼🌈
Literally was going to attempt to cut my curly hair today! Thank god i didn’t as I’d probably mess it up🤣
I must be strange, I like shaggy mullets!
Cut my hair and even came back to cut it shorter 😁, I love the shape and structure 😍
Thank you!
Keep shining ☀️
The timing is perfect, I just got my hair scissors! That ending was so wholesome tho, love from Dominican Republic!
