This makes me so happy!!!! I had an album, Dean Shostak and Friends Colonial Fair Songs, Stories and Riddles that I am sure I got from a school trip to Williamsburg decades ago and this was my favorite song on that CD and been looking from it everywhere!! Thank you for this upload! Nostalgia at its finest!
I never knew the whole song nor this version. I'm glad he finally caught on at the end that "you love my gold, you don't love me". It's apparently sort of a test, this song. If you say no to all of the first several things and yes to the gold then you don't pass the test. Hmmm. Could have been originally a children's game similar to "I'll Tell Me Ma" but less loving. As a child I knew only the earlier parts of it and didn't realize that this song is actually about *not* falling in love nor getting married (this version anyway). There are other songs that *are* about happy lovers but this is *not* one of them. Glad to find various old songs on RUclips including this one. ^___^
After seeing other versions. I think this may be one of the most genuinely *folk* versions on RUclips. *Real* folk, not fifties/sixties remakes. And while this one is *not* a love song, it reminds me somewhat of other songs that are. Nice pictures too. ^__^ Thanks for posting. ^___^
I found it. There is indeed a version (not this one) where she does *not* want the gold in his chest (or anything else of material goods for that matter) and *does* want the key to his heart. ❤💙💜❤ As a children's play song it could presumably be played either way depending on how the children felt about one another or even just what game they wanted to play at the time. ^___^
Some versions (and some people) are just so petty. Aren't they? Really I prefer the story to be the one where she *will* accept the key to his heart, but in *this* video the pictures are just so pretty. It would be beautiful to combine the two. ❤💙💜
My ideal version would have this tune, these pictures, and the other story. 😉 But...that's just the way *my* imagination works. Yours may be different. ^___^ As always, your results may vary. 😉😜😘 Putting several of the various versions in my "Love songs" playlist, including this one because it's a nice video and it's obviously in that family of songs even though this actual one/this exact version is *not* a love song. Just in case anyone wonders why this is there.

There is a version of this song by the most talented Brazilian singer: Renato Russo.

Nice rendition. However this melody is different from most published versions... where did you get the melody from?
Williamsburge Virginia.
