  • Brilliant bit of Pamela Stephenson as a guest on The Bob Monkhouse Show (BBC1 07/06/86) - here chosen as one of the clips during Stephenson's appearance on 'Plunder' (BBC2 27/03/91).

You're very naïve if you believe Bob Monkhouse was clueless about this. Bob was the consummate professional - nothing happened on his shows that he didn't plan in advance. He'd have know the precise position of every pyrotechnic, and the sequence of the explosions, off by heart. He was a very good actor!

He didn't know. On one occasion the guest was the comedian Pamela Stephenson, who, after prior arrangement with the show's producer, appeared in a series of fake plaster casts, apparently the result of accidents whilst at home. During the interview she produced a handgun and fired it on several occasions, destroying a plant pot on the set and a series of lights in the studio roof. She then presented a rocket launcher which she promptly "fired", destroying a camera. The gun, launcher and camera were props. None of this was known to Monkhouse, who appeared genuinely frightened (although the production crew were aware).

@@artisticskillz01 I'm aware that was the official line, but as a former TV producer who has worked with Bob Monkhouse I don't buy it. He was too much of a perfectionist (and control freak!) for anything to have happened on his show he hadn't agreed to three months before the recording!

Did Bob genuinely have no idea this was going to happen? I've not heard of this nor seen it before. He looked really scared at the start. Obviously by the time the rocket launcher comes out he realises this is all a big joke. If he did know it was some pretty good acting.

@@glamdolly30According to Pamela, Bob and pretty much everyone else involved he did not know. Pamela had arranged the whole thing with the producer without Bob’s knowledge, although by the time the bazooka came out I’d be surprised if he hadn’t cottoned on and decided to play along. I also suspect he must have known the bandages were fake - they weren’t that realistic.

Regardless of what Bob Monkhouse was, or was not told by his producer/production team beforehand, he was not stupid! Pamela Stephenson was very obviously acting/performing throughout this sketch, and he was gamely playing along, like the pro he was.
Don't underestimate the late, great Bob Monkhouse - of course he knew this was a prank. Stephenson's obviously scripted gag @ 0:30 about the gun being one of a 6-pack she bought at Safeways in LA was a clue - as was the rest of her clearly acted performance, plus the multiple 'bloody' bandages and leg cast she wore, courtesy of BBC make up! He wasn't taken in for a nanosecond.
And yes, Monkhouse was a very good actor, as evidenced by the acclaimed serious acting roles he did in his long and distinguished career. I've always felt it's a shame he didn't do more dramatic roles - he'd have made a terrific baddie! He was a supremely talented human being and a man of many parts (he was a great artist/cartoonist too).
Stephenson was a famous - and famously outrageous - comedian, primarily known for her starring role on the subversive hit BBC sketch comedy show 'Not the Nine 'O Clock News'. Bob Monkhouse was a comedy connoisseur who always had his finger on the pulse of the next big thing in humour. Only someone unfamiliar with her work (or slow on the uptake), could possibly have taken this at face value.
