The saddest part , this IS a true story. I've heard Wayne talk of it a couple times. RUclips has it on the special "Being an Osmond." That is the most raw and gut wrenching insight to them I've ever seen. Truth be told they older 4 were/are AMAZINGLY talented musicians and songwriters and much as I enjoyed Donny/Marie etc, I have no doubt they could have done so much more had they followed a more serious rock path. This road was better for D&M, but it cost the Brothers dearly!!
Sad, very sad for the older brothers. They were sacrificed at the altar of D & M.All this time they spent on that show they could have been writing their own music. But on the other hand, this just shows the love and unity the family had/has. Sure, they were hurt, but they got over it, forgave and moved on, an example for all of us. Two of my sisters were mad at me for years over the estate settlement, but they were not religious people and didn't know how to forgive and forget.
I think Wayne is the most sensitive one, so he had the hardest time with it all, but Merrill a close second. The pressure was hard on all of them, but Wayne and Merrill suffered physically the most.
@VeryFineWhine are you old enough to remember them? If so, do you think that they thought that the show (donny and marie) would bless their whole family or do you think they though even then that it was excluding the brothers even then. I remember a quote where "d/m" we're talking about stress of show and you get the feeling they weren't exactly sure about show.
Do you think if the Donny/Marie thing hadn't taken off that they could have been a totally different group? I am way too young to remember them (1980 baby here) and it is funny because when I think about their family it isn't like I don't think of Alan etc as family it is just more represented by a quote of Alan Osmond on the Donny.Marie show (the new one) for Christmas wherein Alan was like "This is all courtesy of Alan Osmond on the Alan Osmond Show starring Donny/Marie. The other thing I heard someone talk about online was that donny/marie didn't have control of show that much and so I wonder was stuff like the excessive costuming their choice. It just seems like their family got taken advantage of.
Maybe they weren't at that point but maybe Alan/Wayne/Merril/Jay felt like they could have become more but it leads me to think about how all of these show/docu deals talk about Donny feeling like a kid forced to deal with older brothers who feel that he stole the show. makes me wonder if Jay ever felt that way and how he dealt. Ya get the feeling though that Donny could have felt VERY overwhelmed (in real life) in his early 20s when his life was happeneing professionally (maybe even teen years)
I have no doubt they could have had a more serious rock path if it weren't for this show but yet there is a disconcerting part of these few clips at about 6:05 that talks about how Alan is questioned as to whether he enjoys watching Donny suffer and he says no but I just doubt it. Really truly old enough to remember people: Did Alan just get a little too bossy for his own good or did He just not take Alan seriously. I see that the writers weren't any too generous to all of them but I just see
that is what he is saying though is that their show took away from the original group but honestly it looks like the people who picked their shows showed no respect to them as people.
They kind of made Allen out to be an a-hole in this part....but he could have been that stressed in that period of time, I suppose. The real a-hole, however, was that ABC rep that told Marie she was getting fat! I watched every episode of the Donnie And Marie Show in it's first run and I don't remember ever noticing her getting chunky.
this video shows that writers had no clue what they were doing. To think about tirning someone who had the potential to perform Joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat for six years into "cptn black snd blue". i get showing off their singing but this show ruined their talented image ss a family.

It made me cry to see Wayne so sad! :-

The scene where that jerk calls out Marie for her weight always make me lose my appetite. She was already really thin, were those people crazy????

Thanks Amber
The public can be monsters also...look. How Donnie’s fans turned on him. Just cause God blessed him to marry his wife...

Alan not really taking Donny as a person seriously!!

sure
Wayne I love you Honey
Marie is right way
They might have been still finding their niche but it didn't do anything to gain them respect.
They are making fun of me
What was the point of this act? Was it just to make a joke of them as people? I see them going "where the H _ _ _ did their career go?

donny/marie show but Alan wanted to be funny. Ya wonder if they felt like life just clicked together for Donny and it left them high and dry?
