As sad as it is, it's just how dogs work. A mama dog isn't meant to remember her litter from a year or more prior. Especially if she's recently had a litter or is soon to birth. Same with papa dogs. Poor Kai was much confusion.
Imagine going to visit your parents and your mom has no clue who you are while your dad is trying to fight you because he thinks you're trying to take his wife! :P

When my family's Sheppard got old we sent him back to the farm he was born on. His surviving brothers and sisters didn't recognize him so they kept him guarding the chicken coops until he passes on.
