      It does get overwhelming. When I first started on sim racing, the amount of setting up you need to do to your car so you are comfortable driving it and the amount of practice for each car on each track to get a decent lap time and not crashing was pretty tiring. 30 minutes of practicing and analysing and adjusting the car just for a 15 minutes race.

      Gran Turismo prides itself on being the most realistic driving game so indeed, it's a lot. I'm not a real big car fan, but I've enjoyed the series due to playing with my siblings. And now as an adult with a car that breaks down no less than two times a year, I actually know a bit more about cars since I at least troubleshoot the issue to buy the parts myself before sending it to the shop, lol. Nothing will teach you faster about cars than when yours is dead on the side of the road 😅

    • @ajm5007
      @ajm5007 2 года назад +7

      I do want to add to the other comments that Gran Turismo in particular is pretty good about being a great sim and ALSO being just a fun racing game, even if you're not into the level of detail they've put into it. You can quite easily enjoy the races and improve your cars and have success with the game in single-player even if you're not a car person or a track person and don't plan on becoming one. The "default" options for everything are perfectly fine if you just want to enjoy zooming around the track, and you can outright disable many of the more advanced features to make it more arcadey.

      Plus once you learn what different setup options do, it's maybe 1 or 2 minutes tops and then you're in. If you're not having fun during your half hour of practice I believe you're doing it wrong.

    My brothers and I have enjoyed the Gran Turismo games over the years with my favorite moment being in GT6 against my younger brother. He and I had picked the Bugatti Veyron and chose this night time city course that had a few good straightways to gain speed. My bad driving self would max out the speed of the Veyron, hitting upwards of 300mph and then SLAM into the wall at the end 🤣. This happened nearly every time I got to the end of that straightway, which you actually have to slow down considerably as there was a hairpin right turn into a tunnel. I never looked at my map and always forgot to watch out for the ending of that portion so...I pancaked. Thank goodness that for all of GT's realism, crash damage isn't one of them. However! I crashed the car so often and so bad, the paint began to flake off and I could see the prior colors I'd painted it!
    On our last lap, I managed to catch up to my brother and things got tense. We kept sliding into each other's slipstream, which would launch us temporarily past the other. The final stretch to the finish line was another straightway so we kept going back and forth of who was in first. Finally, we both crossed the finish line at what looked to be the same time...until I came up as the winner. That was awesome enough, but then I hear the ping of winning a trophy for PlayStation...and saw there was one for winning a race by 1/1000th of a second. That made both of us cheer and high-five. That was what I cherished most about that moment. Couldn't have done it without being pushed to drive better by my little bro 😊. Really wish I'd have saved the replay, it was hilarious.

    • @NihilistCrab
      @NihilistCrab 2 года назад +1

      @@SolaScientia I'd recommend it. I've played almost exclusively with a controller and really enjoyed the series. There's a decent amount of feedback you pick up on over time and it's hard to explain, but there's definitely a lot of 'feeling' in how cars handle that is possible to feel even with a controller.
      The GT series has always been console only and made with the understanding that most players will probably be using a controller so the setup there is decent.
      While some people find playing with a wheel to be a better experience, it's not a necessity to enjoy Gran Turismo games - unlike a few more 'serious' sim games I've played on PS4 which are near impossible to play never mind enjoy, without a wheel (looking at you, Project cars 2).

    It's great to see Mike nerd out about cars IRL and in video games, because it gives us a glimpse into the diverse interests and knowledge all the OxBox cast bring to the channel besides their love of video games. One of my favorite segments is Mike and Andy at E3 2016, discussing the (then) new Project Scorpio aka XB1X. Mike went into the technical aspects and what it meant for the future of games as well as the uncertain future of MS, at the time. I wish they'd let Mike do technical videos that explain things like Ray Tracing, SSDs, anti-aliasing, etc. because his background was a technical consumer electronics reviewer before he joined OxBox.

      I don't think it's so much "let" as constantly having to chase views. RUclips is brutal at punishing you for videos that don't perform so putting time into something that may get them little to nothing back is a risk.

    Speaking of DD wheels, there's a new "package" from Fanatec that offers 1k+ pound quality force feedback and hardware in a 500-600 pound package.
    Wheel base: CSL DD
    Wheel: McLaren GT3 V2 (for formula series), WRC wheel (for other driving)
    Pedals: CSL pedals (if you want a clutch, it's generally recommended to buy the Load Cell brake and convert the original CSL brake pedal into the clutch). The ClubSport pedals are pretty good too.

    Also, I would be excited by accurate tides in a game. I've spent quite a bit of time by the sea; having inaccurate (or no) tides is like having a day/night cycle where there's no colour or brighntess shift at sunrise or sunset, just the sun appearing and disappearing and instantly fading the brightness levels to 'day' or 'night' values. It's fine, but at the same time it really does hammer home that this is only an abstract representation of a thing, rather than an attempt to depict it as it actually exists.

      @NihilistCrab 2 года назад +2

      I really wish demo's were still a thing.
      Next best thing for Gran Turismo (on PS4/5) would probably be checking out GT Sport, it goes on sale often, it's not got the same depth of features as a main series entry but still has a significant amount of single player content, despite being focused on online play.
      I've found it enjoyable enough even without PS+ and I've probably put as many hours into GT Sport as any of the main entries in the series (mostly because it's been the only GT game on PS4 but still).
      The one big potential downside of GT Sport is that it is always requires an internet connection and PSN account (not PS+, just a basic account) even if you never touch the multiplayer content. Unless you have pretty patchy internet it's not really an issue, but something to be aware of.
