Hi, I've been following you for a while from France and your videos are great. I wanted to give an opinion, I am a dealership technician and I have personally owned several scanners purchased on the internet. It is better to have a cable connection as dealerships and most key programmers or for programming work because the connection will always be stable. And recently I had a big problem with a well-known brand scanner, with the Bluetooth vci which after 11 months no longer communicates for no reason...and with sellers in China on most sites it's very complicated for warranty returns. Now I only work with cable scanners like xtool d8s and autel im508s with which I am very satisfied. Thank you, it's thanks to your videos that I learned about xtool and I don't regret the d8s which is excellent and impressive for the price. Greetings friend!
Thank you for wonderful feedback and yes I think you are on something big because of the bt issues. Enjoy the d8s as it’s a wonderful scan tool but lifetime updates are BIG.
Great review! I bought the 689BT few weeks ago. I have been testing it on my 2009 Civic LX, 2014 Mazda 6 GT and 2018 Highlander XLE. The diagnostics, special functions and bi-direction controls are just as powerful as the other OE level scan tools on the market. The Bluetooth is fast and has very good signal strength. I can park the car on the driveway and work on this 689BT inside the garage, which is about 20ft away from the car. One difference between wired version and the Bluetooth version is that the Bluetooth version does not display battery voltage on the display. Also, I can definitely tell this Thinkcar 689BT is designed for DIY market, not for heavy duty workshop environment. There is no impact protection at the top and bottom of the scan tool. The USB ports at the top have no cover to prevent dust or liquid from getting into the scan tool. The one year warranty is another concern. Most of other scan tools at this price point come with 2 - 3 years of warranty. The last thing is about the lifetime update. This tool is still very new to the market. So how often Thinkcar will release the updates for those car brands in the US is still unknow. However, It should not be a big problem for DIY mechanics.
Thanks for the feedback, you are right to use, this is great for home diy and a good back up for pro use. I did show the difference in regards to battery voltage display on the wired 2 or 3rd chapter. Update, thinkcar stated they will be adding the battery display to future updates but I think it is not possible as the request the vci to monitor the voltage but I could be wrong. Thanks again and enjoy your scan tool
Hi, Thanks for sharing your experience with the 689BT. About the impact protection that you mentioned, I think that was something that Thinkcar didn't pay attention even for more expensive, THINKTOOL EXPERT 394/399, check the few video reviews or pictures of those two devices. However, you have a valid point it couldn't be for heavy duty work if you are a careless person.
I’m not sure why the company omitted the battery voltage reading on the top portion of the screen with the wireless version. This is especially annoying when it’s more expensive than the wired version.
That too depends on what you will work on? All makes or just one make? For all makes I would go with something like ruclips.net/video/uOc2TMdEQiQ/видео.htmlsi=76yyiLCVauqrGDeG or this ruclips.net/video/nTninTEbdYA/видео.htmlsi=FWUKE6EHQmkUVHld
Hello again Randomfix, I was expecting just the review of the 689BT but let me tell you that you have surprised me with this comparison. Finally, I could corroborate that the 689BT doesn't display the car's voltage in the notification bar (just the VCI, WiFi, network speed, so on). Thing that I don't like about Thinkcar, is that wherever you see the 689BT advertising you see that supposedly car voltage in the pictures and you have proven that it isn't there. I was asking myself about the battery life for the 689BT and if the Thinkcar company sells replacement or if there is a way to upgrade it (in case we need it). Thanks again for your time recording the comparison.
Just a small contribution about tech support. Keep in mind the time zone difference between your own location and Thinkcar's technical support staff that are located in China (for budget devices mostly)
Can you do TPMS manual sensor ID registration on a Toyota with OEM sensors? I tried to ask Thinkcar directly but after 7 hours back and forth online with sell several people I'm not sure they understand what I'm asking is not in the maintenance functions.
@@RANDOMFIXI'm looking for a scan tool not a TPMS. The function I need does not need a dedicated TPMS tool. The low end Otofix D1 can even do ID registration. All that is needed is write down the ID code on the sensor itself before installing into the wheel so that it can be registered to the car. Having a Toyota I thought you might better understand what I'm asking compared to Thinkcar.
About car battery voltage, This will be added in new upcoming software update, As they told me when i sent message to them and i got this ( Dear, please don't worry,we will update a new version, then there will show battery voltage )
@slowestrider4918 you are talking about the battery on tablet ( the scan tool)? I don’t know the cost and have never had one die on me yet! If that is a concern buy the corded version. These are great scan tools.
I'm currently in the market for my first scan tool. I get a lot of Audi, merceds, volvo, subaru, and some asian. Nissan, toyota. Most common issues . Misfire, Evap system Malfuction, PCV issues, Oxygen sensors, Rear brake retract during rotor/pad replacement. I would also like to unlock hidden functions, Turning off stop/start, seat belt warning lights, day time running lights on during turn signals, All windows up/down with the remote key. I think Autel scaner with these functions are closer to $1000.00. with yearly updates... Does the Thinkcar have these functions?
The ad800bt was not bi directional when I tested it ruclips.net/video/ZHd0YUIruW0/видео.htmlsi=HvyCCLC-5eAwS5XL That was over three years ago. I am not sure if they made a software upgrade or if the internals have been updated as well on the 800bt? The 689 is new all the way around and is solids. Since I made he video the car battery voltage displaying has been added and as well as the search function on the live data.
Yes, all scan tools will show the code if they come right back. If this is happening it’s because you have an open circuit such as the sensor is completely broken, broken wire or connection, it’s an open loop so the vehicle detects right away before you turn the engine on.
Coding is just customization of certain features and ecu programming is a lot advanced. This scan tool will not let you customize in depth. Not every feature is available on every vehicle. I this in wired version video. .
@@RANDOMFIX oh wow so it being sold with false information. I thought it was too good to be true. I own a BMW E92 and when I matched FRM all it did was erase my customizations. I have Carly,NCS Expert and ISTA so no real drama to code them back. But it is still a great tool to have.
Use a multimeter or power probe to text voltage while the vehicle is running. most OE scanners will show voltage in Live data feeds. Codes will vary. "System low voltage"

Very good review, thanks. I’m upgrading my xtool d7 because free updates have ended. The Bluetooth and lifetime updates made my decision.

@4:44 you mentioned that wireless version of this device omits the vehicle’s battery voltage on the top. Is there a way to add it?
The wired version had this and now it’s added to wireless version as well. So you just need to update.
Nice review - thanks! I recently got an Ottofix D1 Pro, and I like it; but the free lifetime updates with the 689 is huge!
