- On this day in history, January 15, 1559, England's Queen Elizabeth I, also known as Elizabeth Tudor, was crowned in Westminster Abbey. Elizabeth was the daughter of King Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn, and she was born into a time of great political and religious upheaval in England. When she was just two years old, her mother was executed by her father on charges of adultery, incest, and treason. Elizabeth was declared illegitimate and was removed from the line of succession to the throne. However, she eventually inherited the throne in 1558 following the death of her half-sister, Queen Mary I. Elizabeth was a skilled and popular ruler who is remembered for her intelligence, charisma, and political savvy. During her reign, she oversaw a period of stability and prosperity in England and is still remembered as one of the country's greatest monarchs.

It’s one of the great ironies of the English monarchy that Henry so badly wanted a male heir, yet his daughter by his most hated wife wound up becoming the greatest ruler England has ever seen!
His most hated...but his most loved, too, I think.
What a coincidence, I literally thought about the same thing you wrote few days ago when analysing Wyatt's poetry.
The greatest English monarch is Richard the lion heart
Yeah
He had Edward VI. Your grasp of history is limited
She inherited smarts from her mother. It's been said for Ann Boleyn to be exceptionally witty, intelligent, stubborn and free spirited woman.
Not intelligent ending
Perhaps, but it more likely that the education Catherine Parr arranged for her and the teachings of her sister Mary I was what led her to be able to be who she was. Elizabeth had a wonderful education and her habit of manipulating situations in her favor (mostly used in marriage propositions but Mary originally did by feigning illness and buying herself time with religion, which Elizabeth did both as well) was taught to her by her sister. Anne was extremely intelligent but beyond pure genetics, unfortunately there was not much she got the opportunity to teach her daughter.
Yeah and she was even biracial that’s why she painted her face white who knew 😂
@@sirleroyale4412 if this is a joke, good one. Hate to be a party pooper but she looks extremely white because she stuffed her face with makeup which also damaged her face because of the lead in it and probably was one of the things that led to her death.

the greatest karma for Henry she's her mother's daughter 😎❤
She inherited the throne because Henry changed the rules allowed her and Marie
@@painvillegaming4119 yes he did, but both his daughter’s rules were more in line with what their mother’s would have wanted instead of him. He drove his children to not want to honor him. They didn’t even bother finishing the tomb he wanted for himself. If only he had not been emotionally abusive to Mary and Catherine and had paid attention to Elizabeth and not executed Anne, their reigns would have been influenced more by him. Elizabeth’s reign was amazing, but not really in the way Henry would have wanted it to be.

I've always adored the tenacity of Elizabeth. Yet, her hand in setting the slave trade in motion is disturbing.
Slavery started before Elizabeth's reign.
Queen Elizabeth will be remembered forever she was an icon and she truly was a beautiful queen Elizabeth
Every monarch named Elizabeth just decided to be good
There have only been two. Why are making sound like there have been eight of them?
Elizabeth went through a lot throughout her life. She witnessed her mother being executed (keep in mind, her mother was behead when she was young), her father forgot about her mother and moved onto 4 more wives and her half sister had a deep hatred towards her. She was underestimated as a woman, and turned out she was one of the best monarchs in history!
I think you need to recheck your history facts. Henry demanded Anne to divorce him but she said no. She knew that if she divorced him her daughter would be declared illegitimate. She defies Henry and Henry really got mad. He paid some people to lie about her then excuted her. Elizabeth was sent to relatives to grow up. It is only by annulment or divorce that a child be declared illegitimate .
That is a prediction we dont know if thats actually true
What is your source? I would be curious to look at it and see where my years of research has been lacking. From what I know, this is Catherine of Aragon who he wanted either a divorce or annulment from. She was a woman he was married to for over 20 years and was happy with most of this time, so he did not want to, nor was he able to due to her relationships in Spain, execute her. Catherine spent years fighting the end of her marriage. Neither her or her daughter (at least, until Catherine’s death) acknowledged an end to this marriage. Anne, however, had only been married to the King for three years and had just suffered a third miscarriage, and right after Queen Catherine’s death of natural causes (January 29, 1536). Anne Boleyn was historically unpopular with the people of England, and had been losing her charm to Henry for a while at this point. He had already allegedly been telling her she wasn’t his wife at all and had been a temptress. After her third miscarriage, he accused her of murdering his son on purpose and stopped sharing a bed with her. He had an “investigation” launched, which understandably took a significant amount of time. The (bogus) findings came back that she had been having an affair with several men including her brother. She was arrested on May 2 1536. She hysterically cried to be permitted to see the King, indicating that she had not talked to him about this. Given the amount of time vs. the amount of time with Catherine, it is unlikely he ever tried to divorce her. He wanted her dead. She actually was very compliant and did not try to make demands. She made a speech in favor of King Henry VIII, for the sake of her daughter, during her execution. For her daughter, she would have likely granted a divorce easily. She wanted very badly to be sent away to a nunnery, so I don’t see why a divorce would be much different to her.
Anne also wasn’t as set as Catherine on her daughter being Queen. She just wanted her to be safe. It’s likely the King had already told her he might have put Mary ahead of Elizabeth if it ended up being just the two of them, even though his abuse of Mary was still continuing at full swing.
Elizabeth was declared illegitimate by the terms of the Second Succession Act made in the same year, 1536. It had been made clear to Anne that Elizabeth was to become a bastard no matter what, and given less honors than Mary, although being only two she was subjected to less abuse. As for lodging, I do believe you are correct that at times she was attended to by maternal family members but mostly she had a staff appointed by the king, and had the same governess that her older sister Mary did (not countess pole, the one after that, I forget her name, but it wasn’t Kat Ashley yet either). She was lodged with Edward at times, but yes, she was sometimes separate from him, but almost always away from court.
Elizabeth was placed in the Tower of London. She had lots of relatives, in there.
That’s actually not true. Where did you get that from? When she was arrested at the May Day joust everyone was horrified. Henry didn’t want to bother trying to divorce her after seeing how long it took to try to divorce Catherine.
Soooo…no, you’re incorrect.
Henry VIII did whatever he wanted and no one was going to say anything about it. You need to check your history, this is false.
The song about Henry's six wives, tells us that the reason Anne Boleyn flirted with other men is because she was jealous of Henry sleeping around.Henry is pictured as misunderstanding tho his "illegitimate daughter" took the throne and is remembered as an icon in history to this day.❤
ANNE was lost. Suspicions about ger extra fingers were used against her.And her supposedly infidelity. Which was untrue. Henry just wanted an legitimate son.he had illegitimate ones.
so no one's gonna talk about the fact that she imprisoned queen mary for so many years and then freaking beheaded her like wtf????
Queen Mary wanted her dead and she'd been involved in several Catholic plots to achieve this, before Elizabeth finally decided to imprison her; then she schemed against her from her confinement too, until Elizabeth ultimately decided to behead her.
Remember that once the Pope excommunicated Elizabeth she became a heretic and it was an open hunt on her - it became every Catholic's holy mission to dethrone her and revert English people to the rightful Catholic path. By beheading Mary, Elizabeth was ensuring her own survival.
Are you going to talk about the fact that Queen Mary of Scotland was a threat to her reign? Numerous of Mary's Catholic supporters wanted her on the English throne.
Because they found proof that Mary was plotting to kill her and become queen. Forget that part?
Queen Mary was planning to rebel against her, and she didn't want that. What she did is brutal but that's the least brutal thing a royal has done. Atleast she doesn't create genocide or a massacre.
For those who don't know, Anne Boleyn and Katherine Howard were 1st cousins so Elizabeth I and Mary I are half sisters
yall i made a mistake howard didnt actually have a child with henry viii😭
It didn't end so well for her mother!
Henry must be rolling in his coffin when elizabeth become queen😂😂😂
He would be proud. He didn't hate Elizabeth.
@@kaiser1295I think he just saw too much Anne in her she was her daughter after all
Queen Elizabeth I’s reign is always described as being good for England because of “prosperity”. That prosperity was founded on the slave trade and colonization, not her political acumen which admittedly was considerable.
She will pay for her sins also regarding the slave trade.
@@joyaustin8515 everyone will, the slave trade was a dark time for any country/people invovled.
People talk about slave trade like a crime, in reality it was a practice of old when the world had such need of labor. It was not meant to torture, be cruel, or demean any human race. History is history, the past is the past; what’s important is that we’re not practicing that anymore. Perhaps those high & mighty commenters on space trade should stop going to restaurants and waited to be served, or use housemaids, or take their clothes to dry cleaners - cuz you’re exploring those folks.
Okay first of all slavery has basically existed in most societies for most of human history. I mean slavery was well established in England throughout the Middle Ages but no one really cares cause they were English slaves enslaved by other English people. In 1086 it was believed 10% of Englands population was made up of slaves. The fact that slavery into other parts of the world began during Elizabeth’s reign doesn’t really say anything about her attitude about slavery in comparison to other monarchs, it was just another form of what people had already been doing before her. I’m not justifying what happened I’m just saying are you that angry about her role in it in particular? Slavery still happens today and no one here is complaining about it, you’re just hating on someone who lived 500 years ago cause it’s an easily defendable point and no one’s gonna argue that what England did in the Transatlantic slave trade was bad.
She is the 1st cousin to Mary Stuart Queen of Scotland ;; which is my family bloodline thru Mary Queen of Scots❣️👸👑🏴
you have royal blood?
Wasn't she 1st cousin with Mary's father? Mary's grandmother Margaret Tudor and Elizabeth's father were siblings.
She had Queen Mary executed after 19 years imprisonment. Mary welcomed it.
Both Elizabeth’s were exceptional
This queen Elizabeth 1 was a friend of safiye sultana both intelligent women
it seems like our Queens call Elizabeth know how to rule.
It’s a golden name in royalty
I knew it, something told me she was a pretty good ruler. That's why Queen Elizabeth the 1st is my girl and I didn't really know her story like that.
I'm reading a book about her by Alison Weir right now. It's really good. Her life is fascinating!
The death of Queen Mary 1 was "assisted". The two were at war until Elizabeth won and Mary was executed. Mary is remembered by the exclamation "Bloody Mary", but she was no more bloody than Elizabeth.
Mary was not executed, she died - probably of cancer.
And yes, she was more bloody than her sister. Mary had more people killed in only five years. Elizabeth's reign was bloody, too, yet her reign was a lot longer than her sister's. Mary Tudor had a much higher body count in a much shorter time.
Interesting
Elizabeth had her cousin Mary Queen of Scots, executed.
@@semiramisrosarotMary personally ordered the deaths of 19 people. Her death count was average for a ruler of her time. 270 people were executed, most by Catholic courts who executed them in her name but didn't need her consent due to the fact Catholic rulers are still less powerful then the pope. Mary's half-brother killed 5'500 Catholics in a similiar timeframe yet is not the bloody. So no ...Mary was the least bloodiest of the Tudors and had less power then her protestant half-siblings. They did not have to submit to the pope and his rules. It is also questionable as to how much power she really had after she married. Men often ruled in their kings names and both Mary and het husband were officially co rulers. So no, she wasn't that bloody when you really look into it.
I think you are confusing Mary with Mary Queen of scotts. Mary was Elizabeths half sister who did become queen. She died. It was her daughter the cousin of Elizabeth, Mary Queen of scotts also known as bloody Mary who plotted against Elizabeth for a catholic England . It was her who Elizabeth sentenced to death after being informed of a letter written by Mary regarding a "plot". They called her bloody Mary, she had around 300 people killed for her cause but that 300 is nothing compared to the 71,000 lives executed by King Henry the 8th
But she beheaded my ancestor Mary Queen of Scots her cousin
Karen Tarr Yes but Mary was evil.
She was coerced into having Mary executed yesterday Walsingham
Mary was a threat to her reign.
Unlike Lady Jane Grey during Mary Tudor's reign, Mary Stuart had actual evidence of conspiracy of treason against Elizabeth in the Babington Plot with her signature. Exactly how do you expect to let someone who tried to kill you live?
....because Mary was suspected of plotting to have her killed.
That image of queen Mary the first, to me looks a lot like the red queen of hearts from Alice in wonderland
That wasn't an image if Queen Mary, it was Elizabeth. And the Red Queen of Hearts was inspired by Queen Elizabeth I
Fun fact, U.S state of Virginia is named after her
It’s pretty ironic the Henry the 8th had a dozen mistresses and 6 wives and yet beheaded two wives for adultery. Something he engaged in regularly
Anne Boleyn greatest revenge
Quite an achievement for an illegitimate
Catherine parr got Elizabeth and Mary back into the line of succession
The way the narrator says Anne Boleyn, wow.
I know, I don't like that pronunciation.
I actually heard an 80yr old lady refer to something saying "oh that was due to Good Queen Bess". Just like it was yesterday. This was about 1980!
Hooray 👏🥳
King Henry was a horrible person, having his daughter's mother executed on false charges. The whim of a mad man!
Wasn't the "false charges" actually true? Iirc, there was one man who confessed that led to her and 5 man getting arrested. There was also a fact that she was also charged with treason iirc.
@@PlsSpankMeh Honestly, it is most likely false as the man who confessed was tortured beforehand. Also, Anne during her last days had confided in a confessional with a priest that she and the men around her were innocent. During those times lying during a confessional was seen as a one way ticket to hell, so her lying during such an event makes little to no sense.
He was quite literally a mad man. Not right innthe head after all his imjuries and constant paim.
If anything else, Elizabeth ended the monarchy of the Tudors on a high note.
I dont understand people with religion back than. I mean you think about it. Really none of them were really religious. They used it as an excuse to do shady things. In my opinion it was something just for show. So called hard core religious people do it for show. They did the opposite of the teachings of Jesus.
Disagree. Elizabeth was not all that religious, but other people around her were. We can never understand the way religion played a role in people’s lives at the time. Every facet of most people’s lives went back to religion. All suffering could only be rewarded by religion. Many people’s only consolation in their lives was a promise of the afterlife. Mary I’s mother did penances of scratchy hair shirts and kneeled on hard stone floors for hours each day to atone for her sins. She allowed threats of execution her way and to be sent off away never to see her beloved child again. She wrote to her daughter never to marry as long as the King was alive and to not submit to him in matter of religion, knowing that they could be executed. This was very hard, but these people legitimately believed their souls would be tortured for forever, which was worse than abuse in a mortal realm. Children could recite the virginals by age 4. This was the very foundation of their life. Mary I allowed her servants to disrespect her and call her names and wish her death and even the Duke of northumberland told her he would have smashed her head like a boiled apple. She knew if she submitted to her father it would stop at once, and if she had submitted in the first place, she would have most likely always had a place in line for the throne, even though it wouldn’t be place #1. But it took years to break her down and only with advisement from Catholic leaders for her to submit. And even then, she did not convert. Her brother also threatened to execute her and she still did not budge on matters of religion. And then Jane Grey, when given the option by the Queen, refused to see a priest and maintained her own religion. Thousands of people in Europe during this time period quite literally died and were tortured for their religion, with nothing to gain from “show”. Nothing else but pure suicidal stubbornness would explain these things. These people maintained these things even when nobody was watching, which is the biggest indicator.
Now Henry VIII, that’s a different story. He created a religion just so he wouldn’t have to answer to anybody and could make women around him suffer as much as he liked. And I may even agree with you that religion itself has always been propagated by people that want to control others. But the people raised by it, they really believed it.
Because Jesus said Matthew 7 : 21Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
So i agree with you, they were really messed up.
@Maya Allen and I disagree. You don't go killing people and taking land from others in God's name. You don't force a religion one people. Because they seem like savages. No, sweetie, that's called wanting control and power over all. And they say they do these things in God's name is all bs. Religion a real one doesn't make you do such things. Wake up!
@@marythecontrarianKing Henry the 8th couldn't get a divorce so a beheading was in order. He was the King after all and he got what he wanted. I can't help but wonder how this young generation of Royals will react after learning about their family tree.

No, that was her sister Mary I, who by the way, actually was not unusual for the time. The punishment for religious heresy was standard and while terrible, was something she would have seen modeled to her by many monarchs that came before her. Elizabeth did have around that many people executed (to be clear, much more people than this were executed, but on real criminal charges vs religious criminal charges), but her reign was much longer. Although their deaths were more painful, many of which were drawn and quartered.
