I recently completed two spring cardigans in lovely knits and have been dreading doing the buttonholes. After watching this video twice, I plan to do a couple of practices and then take the plunge. Wish me luck.
Yes, I would love to see a behind the scenes video on your equipment and how you set things up. I am always wondering about that as I watch your videos.
OMG, I never thought about using wash a way for doing buttonholes and my sewing machine hates knit buttonholes, I can’t wait to try it. Thank you so much Whitney, your the best.
That stabilizer tip!!!! I'm staring at the wool for a coat I'm going to make right now, and that stabilizer tip to keep the fuz flat is genius. Thank you!
Great idea with the water soluble stabilizer. I use that stabilizer in strips for my rolled hems on the Serger & they come out fabulous! Great way to use up left over scraps from my embroidery.
did buttons holes yesterday o na button down shirt yesterday, remembered your video , did some samples to adjust them to my liking and to see which way they stitched since i ve havent stitched any on this machine but it all worked out great. the fray check was a great tip , even put it on my buttons after sewing them on . never too old to learn something new
Good to know about the Jersey and ballpoint needles, I always get the stretch because they’re easiest to find, but I’ve wanted to get the jersey and ballpoint needles to try. Good to know I don’t necessarily need to. :)
Thank you for sharing because I tried last year on a cardigan and I had issues with the interfacing and making the buttonholes, thanks for showing the stabilizer and steaming the buttonholes. Also what kind of markers are you using?
Thank you for all the inspiration your channel provides! Was wondering if you would be interested in doing a “Coastal Grandma” look? I just love that whole trend!
Great video, great information as usual.Thank you so much ! May I ask what number and type of machine needle would u use for Cotton Jersey pls ? I am not satisfied with my button holes on cotton Jersey 😞.
Great tutorial. I love the addition of the water soluble stabilizer. One question - I've always sewed my buttons on so that the holes in the button were vertical when the buttonhole was vertical and horizontal when the buttonhole was horizontal. Is there any reason why you chose to sew the button on with the holes horizontally?
That is the same thing I was wondering. I was taught to sew with the button’s holes going in the same direction as the buttonhole. Please comment. Thanks! Julie A.
I think it's really more of an aesthetic preference. I usually sew my 2 hole buttons horizontal and my 4 hole buttons diagonally. I really just fine it easier to do them that way on the machine.
Thank you I had a hard time on sewing buttons on a cardigan and the was pretty stretchy and the machine kept eating the fabric and the button holes would be really tight and bunch up.
No. I don't notice any residue from the fray check. I have a teflon foot that covers the shoe plate on my iron that cleans really easily, but I also use iron cleaner from Wawak if I have any interfacing oopsies!
They might. I know sometimes you can find the rolls in the craft section. I got mine off Amazon in 2020 during the lockdown when I was making a robe for my Mom.
I got mine on the bolt from Hancock Fabric when they were going out of business. I would check JoAnns in the interfacing/stabilizer section. They may have it by the bolt as well.

Good luck! You can do this!

I can totally do that!
Love, love, love your laugh. Thank you for sharing your knowledge lovely lady. 🤓
Aww! Thank you so much!
The summer of tutorials has been fabulous! So incredibly helpful. Thank you so much!
Here! Here! So wonderful.
I'm so glad to hear that!
I wish I could experience your calm demeanor when making buttonholes!!
😂 depending on the fabric, it's not always calm!
OMG, I never thought about using wash a way for doing buttonholes and my sewing machine hates knit buttonholes, I can’t wait to try it. Thank you so much Whitney, your the best.
Oh good! I hope that's helpful!
OMG, the water soluble stabilizer tip is amazing! How many times have I fought the feed dogs over a loopy textured fabric???
Oh good! I hope thats helpful!
I never would have thought to use the water soluble stabilizer, but it makes so much sense! Thanks
My pleasure!

Ditto!!! 👍❤️
It will work great on a wool coat!
Another very helpful tutorial and great tips. Love that mustard yellow color.

I"m so glad!
Oh how I wish I had seen this a few weeks ago! I need to add wash away stabilizer to my arsenal. Thank you for an awesome tutorial!
It's great to have in the tool box!

The stretch are my favorites!

I'm so glad this was helpful! I was using the Frixion pens in this video. They are my favorite marking tool.
Thank you

Good video..like the wash away stabilizer. I use clear fingernail polis on my button..they don't come undone
That's a great idea!

I have definitely been there!
Thank you for this video! One question: Does the fray check get on the iron soleplate and, if so, how doyouclean it off?
No. I don't notice any residue from the fray check. I have a teflon foot that covers the shoe plate on my iron that cleans really easily, but I also use iron cleaner from Wawak if I have any interfacing oopsies!
@@TomKatStitchery Thanks! I love Wawak. I'll take a look at the iron cleaner.
What’s the name of Wash a way stabilizer? Does Joanne’s sell it by the bolt? I’m always just buying the little packets.
They might. I know sometimes you can find the rolls in the craft section. I got mine off Amazon in 2020 during the lockdown when I was making a robe for my Mom.
