    This is the sort of out of the box thinking that pushes innovation in everything. Even if it isn't true, it's definitely heading in the right direction.

    I am intrigued by this talk. I'll admit that at the beginning I thought "Oh god, he's one of those people who doesn't believe that depression is actually a real thing.." or something along those lines, but I kept watching out of curiosity. As someone living with depression, I am always open to any and all possibilities for treatment and advances in research. I actually quite respect the way he presented his argument. He's not saying that the brain doesn't cause depression, he's just saying that it's not the ONLY thing that causes it. Our brains are the means by which we experience everything in this life, so obviously our mental state is going to be a combination of environment and biology.

      +IrishEyes1989 A very relevant comment when you said "He's not saying that the brain doesn't cause depression, he's just saying that it's not the ONLY thing that causes it. Our brains are the means by which we experience everything in this life, so obviously our mental state is going to be a combination of environment and biology." This more or less summarises what the TED Talk is about Irish, thanks so much for that. Caroline Goldsmith

    What I like here is the temperature part AND the fact that he says that depression might be happening not due to a brain disorder but because the body is not fully healthy (malnutrition, heavily overworked). :)

    I CONFIRM the heating of the skinn to be true, because I'm I've traveled and lived in all different climates and environments for long periods, and the hot sunny places did always make me feel content stronger that anywhere else, no matter what hell I was dealing with. AND ALSO CITY environments(pollution smog etc) bring me down in just a few ...some 2 weeks.

    This is an intriguing perspective.
    Go to a hot climate and the depression reduces.
    The day after my dad went into a home I flew to the tropics. The struggle of caring for my dad was too much, I had to let my mind clear. I understand why I felt better within a few days.

      I don't think it's the heat though. It's the sunlight. The light is more intense the closer you are to the equator (warm climates). Standing in front of a heater isn't the same thing obviously.

    When presenting the relationship between environmental factors (smog, secondhand smoke, etc.) and depression, Dr. Raison comes across as the sort of person who can't differentiate between correlation and causation. Just sort of glosses over without so much as an "anyway, moving on..." It's also hard to take him seriously when he concludes by reducing those suffering from depression - whom he supposedly works so hard to help - to people with "lousy marriages or frustrating jobs".

    • @MandyScardino13
      @MandyScardino13 10 лет назад +1

      I think lousy marriages where you are hindered and controlled and ridiculed causes a certain HOPELESSNESS that causes my depression.

    • @tatyanasandler
      @tatyanasandler 10 лет назад

      Mandy Scardinopoop I'm sorry to hear that. I hope I didn't come off as saying that relationships can't contribute to the development of depression - that's absurd, of course they can and many do. But Raison was reducing ALL cases of depression to just those two, which, in my opinion, is a gross oversimplification of a very complex problem and only furthers the stigma around it. I hope you manage to find a solution, though, Mandy. Best of luck.

    • @NomNom649
      @NomNom649 10 лет назад +2

      Tanya Sandler He haven't done that. He said this ironic, pointing out that ist is not usefull treating depression by just saying: "Take that pill and everything (including your lousy marriage or frustrating job) will gona be fine". Which unfortunally is a thing many doctors do today. He begs them to consider that for people who suffer from depression it is a lot more helpfull to help them getting rid of the cuases of derpession than just droping a pill on it and say this will help you to get well.

    • @tatyanasandler
      @tatyanasandler 10 лет назад +1

      Noomi Wilmans Sarcastic or not, that comment is insulting to people suffering from depression. No doctor (however "pill-happy" you believe they are) would ever be promising to fix your job or marriage related issues - nor would they imply that resolving those issues will eliminate your depression. Depression is much, much more complex and often medication IS the only solution.

    • @atthehops
      @atthehops 10 лет назад +1

      Tanya Sandler
      Tanya, you need to take a more objective view of yourself and others. Looking at the language you are using it appears that you are externalizing your subjective perspectives.
      Ex. "Dr. Raison comes across as the sort of person who can't differentiate...."
      No, he came across that way to you. You experienced him in this way,and perhaps others did not.
      "that comment is insulting to people suffering from depression."
      No, you find that comment insulting. Again, others may not.
      You are the "qualifier" and you continue to remove yourself from the sentence, externalizing the perceptive and attempting to make it the universal, a fact, when it is not.

    The temp theory is interesting as people with prader-willi syndrome are typical of this. They cannot regulate their body temperature and often cannot sweat. Thus they overheat very quickly and go red, taking hours to cool down. They are happy when like this and when cold they scream, headbanging and Bute themselves. All are on anti depressants.

    We build, we do, we are until we're not... In the absence of desire, life becomes very simple. Of course, without desire, social exchanges and the rituals of bodily maintenance become repellant. How many people walked themselves through suicide tonight? Of those, how many asked or begged for help, only to be handed a prescription for an SSRI with a smile and holy handshake from the pharmaceutical industry?

    Depression deals with anhedonia and motivation, the lack of pleasure in doing things that in the past gave pleasure, so depression is related to DOPAMINE, and some serotonin receptors, so, we need to target specific receptors, we need to develop new drugs that target subtipes of receptors, not as we do today, flooding the whole brain with serotonin. Antidepressants on me, for example, gives anxiety and panic, doesn´t work. Dopamin block reuptaking substances, on the other hand, gives me enormous motivation and heals any anhedonia.

I live in a part of Australia where summer is too hot and winter is too cold, but I don't seem to be immune to either temperature as far as depression is concerned, though probably winter is worse. When it's very hot here, it's almost impossible to get anything done, which is frustrating.

    ⚠️ The cure for depression: The 40 days recipe - "Stay for 40 days waking up early in the morning and watch both sunrise and sunset. Work all day long on a clear environment, where you can see and feel the sunlight. It's important to watch the sunset for 40 days too. This will adjust your biological clock to the correct time, body temperature and proper habits. This is one of the major causes of depression. You should wake up at the same time during the 40 days period, as well as keeping the time to sleep. Sleep well, work hard all day long, so you'll feel tired when going to bed. You will see you'll sleep like an angel. Remember : Work hard all day long. Don't be lazy." - People who sent me this guide for healing depression, assures that it really works. It has worked for me, so I keep getting up early and watching the sunrise. Good luck. ❤🎉🎉

    The world system is run by demons or fallen angels that torments people. Jesus told us to cast out demons in his name! Paul said we fight against demonic spirits, only Jesus can heal and save from sin. This man does not start off with the Word of God, not the truth but mans fallible sinful ideas. Jesus solves problems. Perseption, not conception..he studies effects, not the true cause, only the born again man understands. Study dr Greg Bahnsen. The world wants their own truth, not Gods Truth.
