Once upon a time, a rich man died and left 2 sons, Henry and Adam. Before he died, he asked his older son Henry to take care of his younger son Adam. The father also asked Henry to give Adam half of the inheritance when he got married. However Hugh and his wife did not keep their father's last wish. When their younger brother got married, they just gave him a small rice paddy and a small barren farmland with an old star-fruit tree. Nonetheless, Adam and his wife both were pleased with what they had and believed if they worked hard, everything would be just fine. One year the star-fruit tree had plenty of fruit and it was almost time for the harvest season. One day Adam's wife saw a huge raven fly on top of the tree. In an instant, the raven devoured a bunch of the star-fruit and then sang loudly, " Children of the raven, come and see. All the yummy fruit on the star-fruit tree. Caw, Caw. Yummy, yummy, yummy. Caw, Caw. Come here and fill your bellies. When the raven stopped singing, a flock of raven came and ate up almost all of the star fruit. Adam's wife knew that they would have a hard time without trading the star-fruits for food and other daily necessities. Adam was desperate and begged the birds to stop eating the star-fruits. As the big raven heard Adam beg, it said, "If you let me your star-fruits, I'll pay you back in gold but you must prepare a 3 span pouch." After the ravens left, the tree looked as if the hurricane hit it. After calming his self, Adam pondered deeply over and over what the raven had told him. Adam told his wife and then asked her to make a 3 span pouch just in case. Long before dawn, Adam's wife heard the sound of a cry of a raven. She woke up her husband, and the couple hurried to the tree and met with the big raven. The raven told Adam to climb on his back, making sure the Adam had the 3 span pouch. Several hours later, the raven placed Adam on top of the gold mountain. Near the entrance of the cave, the raven said,"You can take whatever you like." Inside the cave, Adam found that gold was scattered everywhere. There were also many beautiful stones of different colors. He filled half of his pouch with gold coins and came out of the cave and met with the raven. When the raven saw Adam carry a pouch half filled with gold coins, he asked him why didn't he fill it up completely. Adam said it was good enough for him. Even though Adam and his wife had many gold coins, they worked hard and made successful living as farmers. The couple still took care of the star-fruit tree for the ravens. When Henry and his wife heard of Adam's success, they became curious. They visited Adam's house to check it out. With a jealous eye, Henry's wife asked her brother-in-law how he accumulated such wealth. Adam was so honest and told Henry and his wife about the story of the star-fruit tree and the raven. One day, Henry and his wife forced Adam to trade the farmhouse with the star-fruit tree for the big house, lands, and fortunes they had, all the while hoping that the raven would return and eat the star-fruits. Henry and his wife watered that tree daily and finally came the day the raven came to eat the star-fruit. The couple cried and repeated the same sayings Adam and his wife had used before. The raven also sang the same song and said that if they let them eat the star-fruits, they would be paid back in gold if they prepared a 3-span pouch. Everything happened the same way...ALMOST. At last, Henry entered the cave filled with gold and precious stones. He crammed all the gold into the pouch which was bigger than what the raven had ordered; the pouch was so heavy Henry couldn't carry it. As soon as the raven took off, it urged Henry to throw away some of the gold. He said," My wings are tired. If you don't drop some of your gold, we may all die." But Henry didn't listen to the raven and said they were almost home. Suddenly the raven lost its balance and angrily cried,"You are too greedy. You shall die with your gold." Henry fell off the back of the raven and hit the sea with a big splash, sinking all the way to the bottom. He died embracing the gold with his arms and legs wrapped around the bag. Henry's wife waited for her husband but he never showed up. Finally, she concluded that her husband had run away with all that gold. She took care of the star-fruit tree, hoping that she would also have a chance to go to the gold mountain. Everything happened again, almost the same way. After the greedy woman saw the gold mountain, she said," From now, this Gold Mountain is mine. You can eat all the star-fruits for free." Raven replied," You are too greedy. You have nothing to eat here. You'll die with your gold." Adam tried to find his brother and his wife but nobody knew of their whereabouts. Adam and his wife went on to take care of the star-fruit tree. Each year when the fruits were ripe, many flocks of raven came to the star-fruit tree, but the big raven never showed up again.
