- Knife making has been a thing long before 2x72 inch grinders where popular! There are a lot of young makers out there that get discouraged when they see the tooling in experienced knife making shops. The truth of the matter is that you don't need all that stuff to be successful making a brilliant knife! We finish the knife in this episode of making a knife with basic tools and this video is full of tips, tricks and a few mistakes! I learned several things by going back to making a knife with your hands using basic tools! this is beginner knife making at it's best! If you want to make your first knife, jump in and try it out! Feel free to ask any questions that you have!

Nice golf ball file handle 👍
Works like a champ!
Great video. I sent this off to my Son. I bought him a knife blank. Gave him a mission to watch and learn as much as possible. When he comes home from college. He will make the scales himself. With a little help from dad.
Really cool Robert!
Great idea! Love that!
Greta video. NOt that you asked, but a pro tip from a complete amateur, when using the shoe shine method throw a strip of blue tape on the back of the sand paper and no more unwanted tears!
So true brother!
You've just made bevels and shaping the scales a no brainer for me, you're a legend! thanks mate!
Thanks man!
Sweet knife!!
Thank you!
Looks great. Cool build 😎
Thanks Davin! Really appreciate that 🙏
Lined up ready and waiting 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Thanks Pete!
Excelente! 👏👏👏
turned out well, looks really good, useful to know about the oil straight after water, not seen that before, hopefully stop some of the things I occasionally get so thanks for that, have to agree on the grinder, all about how you do things and use them, perfectly safe with care just like any other tool, not that I am going to be buying loads of tools, just improving on what I have, love the connection from doing things by hand, put more of myself into doing things that way, not that it is what everyone wants to do, each to their own on that front, one tip, put what you want to drill square in a vice and draw some parallel lines you can then use by eye as a guide to get things more accurate, and again you have given me things to think about so thanks again
I haven't had to rely on my eyes to drill a straight hole in years! The drill press is a good friend to me!
@@Aleeknives understand that and it is one thing I will get myself sooner or later, just a tip for if you do it by hand again
Hardwood flooring samples are nice and flat and free(usually) and are close to the size you need.
Listen up everyone! This is a great idea!
An outstanding informational video, thanks!
Your welcome!
I'm in the process of finishing my first knife, but been alittle worried about screwing up the handle. I definitely will be using the method u used for shaping it. Thanks.
I was always nervous about handle shaping also that is why I adopted this method of marking things out!
I just got into knife making, and i must say, these two videos have awnsered all of my questions. Thank you a lot dude!
You are very welcome!
I’m just starting to make knives and really enjoy your videos. I swear you are like the Mister Rogers of knife makers. Thank you!
Loved this!
I agree with your flap disc method. People consider angle grinders more dangerous than they truly are. The danger resides in the abuse and mispairing of cutoff discs. I used to work in a welding shop and I would see guys absolutely torquing on these discs, not checking max speeds (although the latter is kind of hard to screw up if you use your brain AT ALL). I have also found that I don’t like wire wheels with angle grinders, unless cupped (especially the cheapo amazon ones). But over all, I see your flap disc approach as novel and no more dangerous than using it in any other reasonable fashion.
Anyway, the blade looks great! I enjoyed the fact that you opted for a challenging design. It really helped show you can make a “REAL” knife even with basic tools
Thank you for weighing in on the angle grinder! I actually really enjoyed filing in the bevels! I might pre grind on the 2x72 and finish on the filing jig for a while
I bought my drill press from Walmart for 80 bucks, a little under powered but has no prob with drill steel, the nice thing about less power is the if it spins the knife when and if it hits the hand it stops instead of cutting
True story! My press is similarly under powered but it has still wacked me a time or two
I work onboard vessels and sometimes I have free times and lately started to make knives for my friends at home, this channel is just awesome and really informative. Great work sir and thank you !
Thank you Nicolas! Cheers buddy
Dude, this thing turned out sick! You would never be able to tell that it was made with just Hand Tools, great job! Now I want to make a dagger or another spear point.
I was surprised how well it turned out! Thank you!
Great job. You showed your true skill. Making the best with the tools you have. Thank you.
Thank you Ed!
Great video, Airin! Yeah, the drill press was probably my first non-hand tool I purchased for my shop. Definitely an important one.
It's funny how fast you forget the difficulties of just starting out!
Very good job!Use some duct tape on the back of your sandpaper strips to prevent them from ripping!
I definitely use duck tape on my small strips! I have had a run of extremely cheap sandpaper from harbor freight that I am burning through! You get what you pay for right😁
Hella dope results @Aleeknives!
Merci pour la vidéo !!

Great job!!

Good looking knife. Not a fan of putting a hamon on 1084 but yours actually turned out pretty good.
Thank you!
This is art, perfect handwork. I also rely more and more on better equipment when making knives. However, there is less fun. Well done
Thank you Hans! Cheers 🍻

Thank you Daniel! I appreciate that!
Brother i do the grinder in my vise also lol as long as your careful and not messing around like you shouldn't lol its great 😄 you rock man
I think people have a healthy fear of tools and that is not a bad thing!
Lol thats true👍
I think people are internet trained and not necessarily trained by experience. Keyboard safety Sally's don't save anyone from getting hurt. I always say "the best safety gear is between your ears"
😂🤣agreed!
Cold epoxy can be fixed by putting it on the central heating for 10 min or so.
That would help wouldn't it! I found it heats up as it cures also!
Just watching the time, effort and end result of your fit & finish work is breathtaking.
Man I appreciate that Jeffrey!
@@Aleeknives I am keeping all the tips you share in my memory bank...it will definitely help my journey into bladesmithing.

@@Aleeknives THAT, Sir, is INVALUABLE to someone just starting...I am humbled by your generosity.

Thanks Drew!
Loved how that turned out, mate. Livestream was fun too!!
✌🏻
Thanks Pete! I had fun interacting with you guys!
@@Aleeknives
Us too, mate. Really enjoyed it in real time!
You don't need a drill press, you can buy frames that you attach a normal drill into and it ensures a perfect drill press style hole.
Great job as always.
Thanks Nick! I appreciate your comments!
good job
Thank you
Filing bevels was best part. Nice design of handle. Do u think coffee etch would have helped that hamon pop out more beautifully???Dagger look awesome🔥🔥🔥🔥
I actually worked on the hamon for 3 days! I tried etching in ferric chloride, didn't like it re sanded. Then tried coffee and didn't like it, re sanded. Then buffed it to mirror finish and quick etched in ferric chloride and didn't like it. Re sanded then finally just buffed it. For some reason it just looked grainy after etching it no matter what I did. Go figure, but I liked it like this the best out of all 3
@@Aleeknives 😊😊👍👍
Thanks for the detailed explanation of your techniques, it make this video a great teaching tool. You are a talented instructor, I learned a lot.
Thank you John! I am in the process of creating a new tutorial series about forging also!
Nice build and video. Drill press was the first fixed tool I purchased after discovering what a mess non- vertical holes create. 1x30 was the next. Some day a 2x72 . Love your angle grinder flap disc idea for roughing with control.
Thanks Steve! Glad you enjoyed it!
Quality build. I only wished you left that rad smooth bevels on the scales instead of rounding them
Just found your channel in the past week or so and I’ve already learned so much, thank you for putting so much effort and detail into your videos. It’s such a huge help to other makers. The knife came out beautifully too!
Thank you Stan! Much appreciated
Another great video, thanks for filming and editing, your enthusiasm really comes through too
Thanks Mike!
Haha, I believe I mentioned the drill press thing in some previous comment. Great build!
Thanks for the idea!
Amazing as always, and informative
Thanks Chris! I hope it helps a couple people out!
Loved it man! Want a kit badly! Was super stoked! Hope they are up for sale soon.
I had several! They sold super fast. I jave had a hard time procuring the same steel. I hope soon to have more!
That came out beautifully man. I would have watched it earlier today, but I answered my phone and ended up at work. Tell me something,,,if you sell this knife, would it cost more or less than the ones you make with all your high dollar equipment? Just asking because well, been there. Done that. Lol
Same price in the end even though it was harder to make!
Great looking knife! Just found this build. I am just starting out and I am very interested in making this knife. Any idea when you will have kits available?
Thanks Robert! No kits will be available anymore. It is to hard to source materials consistently
Will have to watch the replay this will be 1am ish for me :)
I am still happy to have you here ! Cheers!
Got to see it finally hehe. Good vid and build, great end product. Drill press's are fairly inexpensive as well, and a good tool to have for many jobs.
Yes the drill press is high on the list of tools to have!
Wonder how many hours this knife build took
Total about 5 hours
How were you able to drill that golf ball for a handle without it moving all over the place?
Awesome build bro! 100% Drill press! =)
🤜💥💥💥🤛
🤘🤘
Great video! I recently found your channel and subscribed. The most difficult part for me is to get a razor sharp edge. I like convex grind but I find it really hard to make it very sharp. I use a grinding wheel and then sanding.
That's a tough one. I switched to sharpen with jigs like the lanky for $30. It will get you razor sharp!
Question: the water that you used first, did you also warm the water like you did the oil?
The water was luke warm. I had just filled the bucket with tap water
Hi... Great nice knife. And really thanx for all the info. My question is, what do you do to the blade to protect it from rusting. I just finished my knife and it started rusting within 24hrs😥
I personally like wax better than oil as a protectant. I like Renaissance wax
@@Aleeknives i hope i will find the name in arabic so i can buy it here in my country.. as im following you from saudi arabia.
Any wax finish would produce the same result. Clean your Blade with acetone or similar cleaner then apply wax with a heat gun and buff with a rag. This will provide an extremely durable protective coating, long lasting. Cheers!
0:50 I see a lot of people in videos with this big, flat stone block. What material is it? How much it costs? Is hard to find?
Отлично
Thank you!
Great job, beautiful knife. I am much better at knife making thanks to you and your teaching. Can any refractory clay be used to create the hamone?
Anything that will resist the heat can create a hamon! This happens to be my preferred substance
What type of clai ar you using for the blade please?
This one I used satanite refractory cement
how long roughly would it take to get 1095 non magnetic with a torch. i feel like i’m getting no where with it and i’m wondering if it’s the torch or my lack of patience
It would take a long time unless you have a way to trap the heat. a couple fire bricks would go a long way
What is your process of heat treating 1095???
Great job. Love your work.
Will Any kind of refractory work for hamons?? IE the stuff from menards??
Sure will! I am sure that results will vary
1095 needs a faster quenching oil than canola to achieve it's whole potential. However, heated canola oil will still work for 1095 and it will be a great knife! I think there are some pros out there that don't remember making knives for the first time that will tell you otherwise. I do think 1084 is a better steel for basic heat treating setups! When you can exactly control your temperature and have some parks50 quench oil move on to other steels and go off the heat treating charts for each steel and it is pretty hard to get it wrong! I play with simple steels here in my shop and I have never had edge retention complaints!
@@Aleeknives thanks brotha. I got a real good deal on my 3 sticks of 1095. Really appreciate the in-depth response. I do heat the canola oil so hopefully it will be good. Might have to invest in parks 50. But first let’s make more than 1 knife in two years lol
Man I made knives for 3 years before I bought a real quenchant! There were so many things that were more important to me like tools and a forge! Just heat your oil up with some hot metal or something before you quench. When you heat it up ot thins the viscosity and it actually quenches the steel faster making it more effective. Also you could do a rapid water quench like I did to ensure the edge is at its maximum potential.
@@Aleeknives yea not doubt. I feel the best I have about my shop. I agree. I’ve heard mixed reviews on 1095. Thanks for responding.
I’m going to send you pics of the shop. Going to try and make some kitchen knives.
So I have the profile cut and jig made to cut the bevels; I've been working on the bevels for a few days since I can't devote much more then an hour or so a day, but I followed your suggestion and I have approx a dime's width left on the thickness of the blade. After heat treatment and tempering... how did you finish sharpening the knife or bringing the bevels in to meet? Did you continue with the files and then 220 again? Thanks!
I just finish sanded from 220 and up to 600 then sharpened it
Can you please write what is called refractory cement? Thanks!
The cement I use is Satanite
Thank you very much!✋
Why buildt a jig for your hand drill??? Buy one...they are cheap as chips...
Where can I find that exact same compass
Sorry, what compass are you referring to?
@@Aleeknives the one you used with the pencil attachment and marked the handle
I bought it at harbor freight but they also sell them at art supply stores like hobby lobby
What oil do you use?
I use parks 50 now but I used canola oil for a long time!
@@Aleeknives did you preheat the canola oil?
Yes sir, canola oil needs to be around 115 degrees for it to be the correct viscosity to quench 1084
@@Aleeknives that’s probably what I’ve been screwing up
Are you using 1084?
Why not just put it out now?? You gotta make a four down for it? If your finished editing it, put it out gees....
Thanks Ethan, but there is a lot more to RUclips than just edit and release whenever. There are specific times to release your content that in general perform better and this was a premier so that I could be present to answer questions with the viewers. Sorry it annoyed you, hope you enjoy the content anyway!
I call those people safety sissies. "Oh....Oh....My God you can't DO that with an angle grinder. Do you know how unsafe that is?? Ohhhhhh geeeee you'll die!!" Take a break people, it's more dangerous by far to hold the knife in one hand and the angle grinder in another. As long as the person doing the work has verified it won't come out of the vice it is no more dangerous than a belt grinder. Get a grip.
Totally agreed!
F the Ukraine and Russia and every single politician that keeps sending our money over there.
Looks great man! I do all my builds with a hand drill.
You are skilled! That made it tough
