In 4 minutes this man earned all of my admiration, inspired me, impressed me, hyped me up on these films, and made me wish he was my grandfather. Possibly the best closet video yet.
Watch his interviews on youtube. He is an amazing, invigorating artist. His films are the same. He is very eccentric and unconventional. He used to sleep in subways, work in restaurants to save money to see films.
Amir Naderi's list: A Brighter Summer Day Three Films by Luis Bunuel Ingmar Bergman Trilogy (Through a Glass Darkly, Winter Light, The Silence) Dekalog The Apu Trilogy
Wow, Amir Naderi! It's great that Iranian cinema has developed something of a following over the past 25-30 years, but it still seems like only a few filmmakers - Kiarostami, Panahi, Farhadi and the Makhmalbaf family - have really gained much international renown. There are a wealth of other great directors in the country - or as in Naderi's case, exiles from the country. For those who haven't seen his work I'd strongly recommend Entezar (Waiting) (1974), Jostoju (1980), Marathon (2002), Davandeh (The Runner) (1984) and Aab, baad, khaak (Water, Wind, Dust) (1989). His choice of Satyajit Ray is no accident - that sort of poetic realism or neo-realism inflects most of his work that I've seen. Can't argue with his other picks either, especially A Brighter Summer Day.
He's Iranian. My father and uncle are in their 70s and are exactly the same. My grandmother is in her 80s and went to Six Flags and had fun. Iranian people are usually just very energetic
Through Glass Darkly is well regarded but not to the same heights as Bergman's later films. I fail to see why. It is one of the most wrenching, poignant, sublime, and mesmerising films I have ever seen. The lighting and angle shoots are superb but for me it is the cast that make this movie a masterpiece. Harriet Andersonn is so completely convincing in her role that the viewer can almost become fixated on her trials and tribulations. With such powerful and yet intricate themes including the equation of God with love, sexuality, mental illness, and exploitation in art area all explored in a movie where everything feels so incredibly real. At times you feel like you are in the movie itself, in the same rooms, sitting at the same table, especially if you can relate to the pain and anguish that comes with psychosis and the way it can infiltrate the lives of others and turn all meaning on its head and make the search itself for purpose and reason so painful and in the end futile. Strangely for a film that deals with such serious and impactful themes, and does so with genuine sincerity, there remains something beautiful in this film. I feel it may be the compassion the viewer feels towards Karin and the plight she is heading for. A movie that makes me feel intensely concerned for the welfare and lives of the characters and how such things as religious ideologies and mental illness can cause such damage and harm to those whose hearts are or were so full of love for beauty and others. A wonderful film that convincingly shows just how frail humanity can be.
His enthusiasm is infectious and his reasoning is quite convincing! I've only seen the Apu Trilogy of these but if I love those films as much as he does-and I think there's a good chance-I'm going to love his other picks too.
This was excellent. He left his heart in there alright. I hope they never stop these closet picks. But then, I also hope they would've never stopped the 3 Reasons series....or the Eclipse series.
Dekalog is surely the greatest achievement in Cinema. And these were actually the best picks I've seen. Love every movie in this list and the man has a high level of enthusiasm for cinema and respects the masters.
What a beautiful human. He represents his art in every morsel of his being. I have not seen any of his work. And yet, seen all his work in 4 minutes. That’s a real fucking artist. Take heed posers and hypemonkeys.
I can never decide if I like the short lists or the long lists of picks more. He really nailed the bare essentials to understand what film can do and be.
You could see the passion and love for cinema just percolating. He is such an eccentric and lovely artist who laments what he calls "pure cinema." You can tell his taste by the movies he picked.
His intro was like they begged him to do this, and he insisted "NO!" over, and over... then they put a gun to his head lol. Then out of nowhere he yells "ACTION" gets super excited, and all into it lol and turns out to be one of the most enthusiastic, passionate guests. This was great.
the runner 1984 is one of the great movie in my country, you can watch and have wonderful time with your family.don't waste your time if you have time watch it immediately.

What a great director pick ups! He shows us his love for cinema in very short time: Yang, Buñuel, Bergman, Kieslowski, Ray!
“Dékalog…ay ay ay aya ya!” - couldn’t agree more. Fantastic video, I want him to talk about every single film in the closet, if it’s this glorious.
This was excellent. He left his heart in there alright. I hope they never stop these closet picks. But then, I also hope they would've never stopped the 3 Reasons series....or the Eclipse series.
3 Reasons was great - why they stopped doing it is beyond me. They were artistic trailers very well put together - I still watch it sometimes.
He immediately grabbed a stool to look at movies way up high. Massive respect for that.
Dekalog is surely the greatest achievement in Cinema. And these were actually the best picks I've seen. Love every movie in this list and the man has a high level of enthusiasm for cinema and respects the masters.
