One thing to note is the standard milk is hormone free (those hormones are banned in nz) so the better comparable is the hormone free milk price in the US
it's the same in Europe, growth hormone for dairy cows and steroids for meat animals are forbidden
......why do they put hormones in stuff over in there?
@@Laura.v.b to make the animals produce more. Growth hormone makes cows produce more milk, and steroids make animals have bigger muscle (even though a lot of it is water and the meat will shrink quite a bit while cooking)

@@Laura.v.b it doesn't harm the animal directly I think, their life is short anyway... And growth hormones are proteins, not only all different between species, but also digested. But I agree steroids in your meat are not the best for your health
Dude, I'm about to blow your mind. You can buy tomatoes in a tin all year round.

@@noodleMoodle253 right. I totally forgot you simply CANNOT cook pasta unless you use fresh tomatoes. There's a chemical they add in the canning process that causes pasta to liquefy.

then you have to modify the acidity and tartness of the fresh tomatoes with salt and sugar... canned tomatoes you don't need to do that it's already been done.
Just cut up your fresh tomatoes and eat them fresh as a side or in a salad... cooking them is such a waste.
Look at the label, all canned tomatoes in NZ come from Italy j
You can buy fresh tomatoes all year round also, they just cost more in the winter. In the summer many kiwis grow their own.
You can use canned tomatoes to make tomato based pastas. Many Italians now use canned tomatoes and other tomato based products to make their tomato based pasta dishes. I am 100% Italian (I was born in Australia from 100% Italian stock, hence I know what Italians cook and eat.) and I always use commercial preserved tomato products to make pasta dishes. Sometimes I will only preserved tomato based products, and other times I will used fresh and preserved tomato based products.

Indeed. For as little as 89c a can. And they keep for ever in the cupboard! I went to buy some fresh a month ago and they were $15 a kilo ($7.50 a pound, approx)

The Pav was actually invented by a chef in Wellington to commemorate the visit of Anna Pavlova the Russian ballet dancer … I’m a kiwi living in Australia and I’ve had this conversation sooo many times when Aussies try to steal it along w so many other things😆, but this fact always stumps them and ends the convo pretty quick, haha🤙🏼👊🏼😂⚜️

If you lover peanut butter then try 'Pics' brand. Nothing but peanuts and peanut oil, a little salt. No sugar, no preservatives (peanut oil does that) .
Their chocolate peanut butter is way better than Fix & Fog too
I’m not a fan of Fix & Fog. I think they over-roast their peanuts. It tastes on the verge of burnt to me. Pics all the way.

A chicken tip: frozen birds are generally MUCH less expensive than fresh - in the order of $6 for a 1.35 kg chook at my local P 'n' S. Also, as I understand it, the risk of Campylobacter contamination is less with frozen vs fresh.
Vac packed fresh chicken in Oz is around $3.50 a kg.
Those were gold plated chickens alright!
But frozen chicken often has additives and preservatives that fresh doesn’t have. I buy fresh chicken on sale and freeze it at home.

@ Ian Webb - from the back of the packet for Pam’s Chicken Drums “Chicken (89%), Water, Maltodextrin, Salt, Mineral Salt (451), Hydrolysed Vegetable Protein, Thickeners (415, 412)”. The ones that are cheaper frozen than fresh have additives. I don’t need to google it I have spent hours at the supermarket looking for the best prices with no additives.

In Australia there is "best,nice" which is the highest quality with less fat

I like your observational comedy Tara. It’s a gift you have. I’m sure other people will say this, but New World would be the most expensive grocery store in NZ.
I live in the Wellington region (Kāpiti Coast), where I do have the opportunity to do fruit and vege shopping straight from the growers. Maybe a Saturday morning Market would make an awesome video, to show that you don't have to rely on the big supermarkets, plus spotlight on some of the more local producers and arts scene in Wellington.

Yeah when they said the milk was $5.50, I was like dang, where the crap are you shopping? At Pak n Save that same bottle of milk is $3 or thereabouts.
I shop at New World and that milk isn't that price there either, not sure what price tag she looked at.

They're owned by the same big company I'm pretty sure I heard something about how they raise the price of one so most people will go the other one I'm not entirely sure yet

At 10.11 in your video, the Pam's tomato sauce, above the Watties one, is much more tangy than Watties, which I find too sweet. Try the Pam's one if you're looking for an alternative to Watties.
Something that’s been used for the last few years to help parents with kids in tow shop right after school is out is the free fruit bins for kids, when you walk in there is always free fruit that you can give your kids to eat while you shop…is this done in the US?
We do in Australia!
It was done first many years ago with Free fresh fruit or fresh bread buns from a super market called Big Fresh.
Absolutely not done in the U.S. There is s store that sells ice creAm cones and families buy ice cream to eat as they shop. But thats just the one store.

No there’s nothing like that in the US which makes me sad because that is such a wonderful idea. A healthy snack for kids instead of all the processed sugary food we have here 😢
I do a lot of baking but when it comes to Pavlov I reach for a Cowells pav then top it with whipped cream and fresh fruit.....quick, simple and yummy
Does anyone really make their own pav base? Not that I'm aware of!
Cowell's pavlovas are too soft and weep all over the plate. Much better to bake your own crusty base.
I used to work in a supermarket and we got an email saying cowells pavlovas are also Pams pavlovas and vice versa, and that's common over here with milk and cheese too. They're made in the exact same factory, they just have a different label. So really, just buy the Pams it's the same product, but cheaper!
I love watching grocery stores videos and anticipate moving to New Zealand as soon as I have the money, so I'd love more videos like this!

In New Zealand we may not have any ‘traditional’ cheese varieties that originated here, but we are world famous for the quality of our cheese and dairy products.
As for Cheddar itll be below us my apologies i am not taking a dig.
New Zealand dairy is over and above the best dairy in the world - milk, cheese, cream, whatever, it is so fresh, creamy, and hormone free! Scrumptious.
Where are you guys shopping? $22 for a chicken. I'm from NZ and I bought a free range chicken for $9 and I could of bought a cooked one for $12
Coles and Woolies in Oz have hot fresh BBQ chickens @ $10 all day every day ...$12 in NZ is reasonable.
@@harrycurrie9664 yep. Costco in Australia you could get a cooked chicken for $7(AUD). You can't buy a raw one for that price at most supermarkets! I buy a cooked chicken at my local Countdown for $11-12.
I think one $22 was Waitoa which is organically farmed chicken vs the others which are not.

grow your own passion fruit they are so easy to grow and cowells pav is made with real eggs and ingredients, they are the best, and yup homemade is best

Difference between tomato sauce and ketchup is tomato sauce is about 50% tomatoes compared too 85% in ketchup, also tomato sauce has sugar where ketchup doesn’t
Hmm, I didn't realise that about alcohol in NZ grocery stores. In Australia, it is legal in most states (except two) to sell alcohol in grocery stores but you typically have to go to a separate store (there's usually one right next to the supermarket) to get your alcohol.
I've heard in the US, it varies by state.
I cant wait to see this, wellington prices compared to Auckland, I just did the groceries and about spewed over the prices of tomatoes($12.79kg) and capsicums/bell peppers($3.49ea) granted they are out of season

That milk was $3.85 in Pac n Save when I was home last.
They were quoting the price of a 3 litre and holding up a 2 litre.
Watties tomato products (sauce, baked beans, canned tomatoes, etc) have always been sweet. I avoid them because the sugar ruins the taste.
Try Tuimato or Delmaines (better) tomato sauces. Oak branded canned products are less sweet, even though they may come from the same factory. Nice video!

Shop at pak n save, Asian markets, or local fruit and vege shops usually priced cheaper than most supermarkets, countdown is the most expensive.
Pity you didn't state you were shopping at the most expensive outlet and that countdown and PaknSave have a wider range of products but I did enjoy watching your videos and finding out the things you think are cheap compared to the states even at New world
Looking at the beginning of the video, looks like they are shopping at New World, which could be more expense and less choices than Pak n Save or Countdown.

New World prices differ , as do Countdown prices depending on where you live. My closest supermarket is New World, really good deals.
yeah I feel ya for the milk prices, it does pay to do your research. we have a local store that sells 3 litre bottles at $4.50ea so we've been lucky buying 6 bottles weekly from there for several years

They're double the price of chicken and milk we pay in NZ. As others have said, this is the most expensive supermarket chain in NZ by far.
Got to buy what's in season, citrus is cheaper at the moment. Also shop the specials, I noticed products will be on special at countdown one week then at New world or Pak N Save the next.
We always had our own garden, many people did, and very rarely did we have to buy fresh fruit or vege at the supermarket.

Thanks Chris. I couldn't find it in Gizzy in 2017 when I was caring for my sick mother for four months. All I could find was low fat. Everything is so different since I was a boy in NZ and it was hard to find a pie without cheese then too. 'Big ass sign' is 'Big as sign'. Damn it took an American to teach me that I didn't understand my mother tongue any more. lol
I found some at Countdown. I loathe low fat yoghurt so I stood there for ages finding ones that weren't low fat. "The Great Dairy Collective" has a full fat Greek style yoghurt. I like it. It's one of the more expensive brands, but at least it's not low fat.

$23 for a whole chicken? I'm in Bay of Islands and pay about $12 for a fresh one ($15 at the butcher) or as low as $8 or $9 when they're on sale (New World) Buy frozen - much cheaper. For Americans, $10 NZ is about $7 US.

When visiting my brother in America I loved the food except for the selection of cheese and the American bread was so light and not filling . Even tho I had seen American food before I went the size of grocery items blew my mind especially the bulk items at Sam's club
I found the bread in the US to be too sweet! You're right about the cheese the variety was pretty mundane :(

You should've gone to either Pak n Save or Countdown. New World is almost like going to a 4 square. Expensive.

@@jillcadman8139 Agree. Countdown meet is weird. I froze their mince and it turned orange. They say they don't add additives, but mince from other stores doesn't turn orange in the freezer.
Very interesting, only Ontario Canada has a Beer Store, but you can buy beer in the Liquor store and many grocery stores. Different provinces have different rules. Most states in the USA have beer and wine for sale in grocery stores.
Mullets are not "in style", they are and always will be the greatest NZ and Aussie haircut ever! Will never go away.
In Ontario, they sell beer in liquor stores. But, there's also separate beer stores owned by the breweries. You can also buy beer and wine in some grocery stores, but not all. In Quebec, you can buy beer and wine in every grocery store, also in convenience stores like 7-11. Chantal is a bit off base here, as each Canadian province has different liquor laws.

Buying at markets for fruit and vege, mad butcher for meat, couplands for breads and milk is cheaper. You learn to shop around. New World and Fresh Choice are expensive supermarkets.
I love the Tatua Spray Cream, quick and less mess for filling brandy snaps, the Chicken is cheaper at Pac n Save "well, everything is cheaper" NW are so expensive.
Gosh I remember cutting out the NW and 4 Square coupons for the specials, don't get specials like "Stick Mans" specials annoying as he is 😂
You live in Wellington. Where, who knows, Do your grocery shopping at MOORE WILSONS, one in the city, one out at Porirua. Expensive but best there is. When we lived in Tawa, all our grocery shopping was done there. try it.

Technical point... those things you picked up at the beginning to wheel around the store and put your items in is called a Trolley not a shopping cart. The store is called a Supermarket, not a grocery store.

If really want it ask your supermarket manager and they might try to get it in but don't be surprised if they can't but they have done things like that in the past
In Canada, Ontario at least you can get beer and wine in some grocery stores, the laws changed this year. Also the LCBO (liquor store) has been selling 6 packs and individual beer for a few years.

Beer and wine have been standard in NZ supermarkets and superettes (corner food stores) for many years
Eating seaonal... Yes, thats a thing, you should take your cam (and viewers) to a pick-your-own market garden. Tomatos by the acre, onions in the ground by the bushel, it's the best way.
And shop at farmer's markets or roadside stalls. Fresh and cheap.
Also you showed the Deli range ,which was mostly prepacked,which is a very expensive way of buying ,the average Kiwi has to look for the best buys at deli service counter ,and he Chicken is probably best bought in the smaller packs ,chicken breast ,legs ,or stir fry when it's on special or marked down price .
Be interesting for you to observe people shopping and you will see how many go past the expensive,produce,meat etc .
The problem we face in NZ is we are an Export Nation and we are paying the high prices .
The milk varies in price and quality , expensive for a dairy producing Nation,and in many cases the basic essentials are left out for cheap sugar kk aced foods ,they are cheap
Pro tip, frozen chicken is cheaper than fresh save some money and buy frozen potions when on sale. If you have limited freezer space buy a couple of frozen birds for tomorrow's dinner

In Auckland, I shop at Asian markets like Tai Ping where they sell fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, chicken and seafood as well as Asian foods. I look for any produce on special as well. Quite often they are cheaper than supermarkets. Make a list of what you are shopping for. It's easy to over buy. Good things are on offer. Then I shop at the supermarket. Alternatively, you can buy fruit and vegetables at the markets/farmers markets around Auckland, such as Avondale markets on Sunday, Wesley markets on Tuesday, Mangere and Otara markets on Saturday, etc. Go early for car parks. I have saved money going there. There is a cycle on how the specials are run at Supermarkets, so if at all possible, stock up on specials. Work out how often your favourite coffee is on special. Stock up. Mr Meats and places like that sell large meat packs. Good for families. 2 stuffed chickens for $20, BBQ packs for $20 or $25. I buy fish at Oceanz. Much fresher and cheaper than supermarket. I find buying food in South Auckland is cheaper. Reduced to Clear can also save you money. People with large families usually know the best places to buy certain foods. Another way to make your money go far. Groceries are expensive right now and are expected to increase. Shopping smarter is the name of the game right now.

Great review on the grocery shopping.. I think shopping at PaknSave at least better prices, plus shopping for meats , find better prices at Mad butchers..or Mr meats like they have in Akld ..better selection too.
We are in papatoetoe ak, and our corner dairy sells 2x2ltr milk for $6 :), tray of size 6 eggs (30) for $6 too....
that fruit so called persimons 🍅. .. in our language Farsi we called it " khormaloo " ,it's wide spread in our country iran....n ..it's tree almost available in every house 🍅 . .. when it's fully ripe . ..it's colour becomes dark orange 🍅 n its shape close to tomato . .. it's so sweet ....as f it was a kind of sweet or jam🍅🍅🍐🍓🍇
Milk and in fact, all dairy products are very expensive over here in NZ.
Love your videos! I think you should mention how you have to bring your own reusable bags to the supermarket (and to any pretty much any shop in NZ these days) to cut down on the usage of plastic bags. This will be a pretty foreign thing to a lot of people...

I think it's more common that you think. I've talked to European's who were surprised that only a couple years years ago were still using plastic bags at the supermarket and still use far too much plastic packaging compared to many developed countries.
Not to Californians. You have to pay for bags there.

We do make buffalo mozzarella cheese which is the traditional milk for mozzarella just might be hard to find
One cup cream and 1/4 cup (real) maple syrup poured in slowly while whipping. Amazing on apple or pumpkin pie!

@@blissy1 Don't knock it until you try it! If you like maple syrup you will probably like this whipped cream! It doesn't separate as quickly as plane whipped cream will either!
You had to go to the most expensive supermarket in NZ.
You can do that when you don't have to work for a living and have a huge disposable income.
Homebrand cows milk is cheap in Australia mainly due to the competition and cut throat environment that the farmers have been given to sell their milk, as the various players in the dairy industry will only give the farmers a pittance for their milk. This year the cheapest milk prices have risen a bit, but not enough for the dairy farmers. Dairy farmers may not be subsided by the government in Australia.
I absolutely live for this time of year because the fabulous local oranges from Gisborne and Northland come into season, and I can spend a couple of months devouring at least six a day until they're replaced by the dried-out crappy Australian and USA oranges. Ditto mandarins.
I bought local NZ mandarines at the farmer's market last weekend and my husband inhaled them. He loves mandarines, and said these were way nicer than the Australian ones (and we lived less than 40 mins from a big citrus area, so I bought direct from growers, so they were uber fresh). He said the NZ ones were juicier and tastier.
Absolutely! Gisborne navel oranges are my favourite fruit ever - I sometimes have to stand over the sink to eat them they're so juicy. And just the right tartness too.
Go to the warehouse for milk it's $3, New world is the most expensive supermarket we have in New Zealand. Go to pak n save for cheap food.
Grocery shopping in Ontario Canada: Large and small shopping carts, check. Persimmons, Check. Shopper in onesie, check. Bagged salad, check. Everything in plastic, check. Wine in the grocery store, check (Fortino's/Loblaws). Mullet hairstyle, check.

The problem is that this is an expensive North Island supermarket. I can still get red tomatoes from Christchurch Countdown, PakNSave or a local grower.

if you see how hamburger meat is made it is not mince. I always giggle that we now that we have a american foods section in the foreign foods aisle.
Passionfruit in season always expensive. Generally glas house grown with a lot work. However mine grow without me doing anything in run down glass house so I do question the price The other expensive fruit we grow in tamarillo and they are grown outside Not sure why they are so expensive
Vegemite versus Marmite is a matter of taste, not Australia versus NZ. Personally I've always preferred Vegemite as the flavour will blend with what you put with it whereas Marmite always stays sharp and distinct.
Marmite is like road tar and it is British not sure why people think it is a NZ thing

Perhaps you should mention that New World is the most upmarket supermarket we have in NZ.
Tricks and Tips is going to the cheapset Supermarkets, knowing all the shops where they sell cheaper things like the milk they sell 2 for 6bux, Fruits always go to the Flea Markets, they are way cheaper, Meat go to a butcher shop, Countdown and Pak n save are abit pricey for those lol

I pay around $5 40 for a 3 litre bottle of homogenised milk You can buy UHT (long life) full cream mik for around $2 per litre
UHT milk has it's limitations. Ultra heat treatment denatures the proteins and it can't be used to make homemade yoghurt.

Have you had Mainland Tasty? Very good. The quality of cheese varies considerably by brand. Good Tasty is delicious, but there is a lot of tasteless Tasty out there. Currently you can buy 1Kg Mainland Tasty at Pak n Save for about $16.

Seeing as you're in New World, if you go to the gourmet deli section, they have more variety for cheeses, things for antipasto platters etc and imported European foods. You might find a better selection of Mozarella there. There is a Mozarella that's made here that NW sometimes stocks. It's called Massimo's. It was started by Italians, to authentic Italian recipes. Also, you can get frozen chickens cheaper in the frozen poultry section of the freezer. You can get Turkey closer to Christmas too.
For Italian foods I'd recommend Mediterranean Foods in Constable St in Newtown.

New World is a bit pricier, however the quality of the produce is usually better( I was impressed with your local NW fruit selection, our locals is a bit boring), I find it so much quicker, the service is better & I know that supporting NZ owner operated stores are REALLY important to our economy. Infact there are some really good value small business vege stores around & your local butcher should have better quality meat at good pricing too. Farmers markets are growing, there are some really good ones around too.

This will be interesting. The cost of fresh food in NZ is bloody criminal. $17:60 for a 1kg block of cheese! 🤬 Granted our NZ cheeses are quality but does it quantify? GST okay I get it but to make us compete on an international market for home produce is not on.

Supermarkets are expensive in Alaska. Granted. It's also covered in snow and fresh produce is freight so charges are factored. Not the case in NZ. We also rate among the highest in OECD for childhood poverty and obesity. Quite the contrast however, to feed a family is cheaper at a takeaways 3 days a week than fresh fruit, meat and veg. Processed food is cheaper. Fizzies cheaper than water. No. Something is broken. I'm very interested to know how others outside NZ cope.
I'm complaining because I'm a self employed, solo Mum living in Central Auckland with a 19yr old son that eats everything without a pulse and still skinny. He won't mind takeaways everyday.

American cheese is orange because they color it. The color most often comes from annatto, a food coloring and condiment made from the seeds of the achiote tree, and/or paprika.
As others have mentioned.. "Tasty" cheese is Aged Cheddar.

When I was a kid we had a batch in the Sounds (Top of South Island).
.. ehhhh a Batch in this case was a boat shed on a rural bay property that you rolled the boat out, folded down the beds... Luxury...
A local farmer did a milk run in a van, the milk had cream floating on top... You could get 5lt of cream so thick a spoon could be balanced upright in it... and after a day or 3.. made the rest into butter.
Nowadays milk is watered down whitewash and $2 NZD a litre. Near illegal for farms to sell raw milk.
Whole roast chicken at Coles Brisbane Australia is $10 Aus.
NZ is more expensive than Australia, considering NZ salary rates are way lower than here in Australia.

I love the Everything Butter from Fixx and Fog. Everything Butter with banana on toast perfect breaky. Cully' makes a spicy ketchup that has a good kick. I can get a two-litre jug of milk at countdown for $3.50

Not really. The more healthy options are the more expensive option. The cheaper usually is the less healthy option. Is so expensive here most people can barely pay rent let alone buy good healthy food.
Visiting from the States again after 7 or 8 years. I notice way more plastic packaging, not just for junk foods, and there seems to be a lot more junk foods on offer, too.
