what is interesting about this song. is Jim Croce in an interview before he past away said he met a guy in a bar and the guy told him his gf was on a roller derby team. Jim said do you mind if i right a song about it. and 5 minutes later this song was born. Croce had a talent of taking everyday events and put them in a song
Well I certainly hope it was an interview 'before' he passed away...in all seriousness Jim Croce is one of the greatest American songwriters ever; right there with John Fogerty and Alice Cooper and Jim Morrison
@@hellohowdy226 Well I'm real close to 69 and if I died tomorrow I still got a lot more years than many others. I'm already seeing limitations and I don't expect it to get better, if you get my drift.
RIP Jim Croce, I was born in 1986 and I grew up listening to this man hes one of the best to ever hold a guitar and take a mic ,have to thank my dad for his taste in music.
Watched him on TV for the first time in the early 70s. Fell in love with his music instantly. He was a fine singer and a great writer. His songs were all about real life and were fantastic. Died too early like other great musicians.
I miss roller derby. It came on after wrestling. My parents would watch the greatest in country and western entertainment LIVE from Panther Hall in Fort Worth, Texas with Bill Mack. I would get to stay up late and watch wrestling and roller derby if I could stay awake. The TV would sign off and play the National Anthem.THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT!
This song incredible. One of the rare musicians that near every single song created I vibe with. I mean who writes a song about a roller derby queen! Way better then the repeated troupes over and over again.
This guy made it look easy like just picked up a guitar and started playing a guitar. He was an underated genius, everybody knows at least one song and sings along
Ours was "Philadelphia Freedom", probably selected because of the bicentennial. I voted for "Kung Fu Fighting" because I thought it would have been hilarious 8-P
First time I saw Jim perform was on a Saturday afternoon on American Bandstand...I believe that I was 8 years old (?) when Leroy Brown came out and I've been listening ever since....
This song kicks ass. Used to play this black water ride captain ride on a jukebox in a bar I used to hang out. After those three songs everybody in there was in a better mood. Love me some Jim Croce
I played this on a cassette tape my dad gave me, over, and over. Funny song. Jim croce was very talented. Like Richie valins, Buddy Holly, and the big bopper. Life taken too soon because of a plane crash.
Yes it was a tragic and Mr Jim Croce love this music because a lot of good music back then was folk music that would present real life mostly is such a beautiful way with music. 😊👍

As a fan of the Philadelphia Warriors Roller Derby team, thrre was a woman who fits this description. Her fans did call her Tuffy and I think she was with the Thunderbirds out of Los Angeles or a team out of Detroit..she was huge and a bleached blonde. And the program described her as "built like a refrigerator with a head."
Watched the Philladelphia Warriors on UHF in the 60's. And almost everyone from that time knew the San Francisco Bay Area Bombers. God, how time has flown. Too bad today's kids will never know the thrills and spills of the banked track with the blockers and the jammers!
"She was built like a 'fridgerator with a head" truly great line for a love song!
She was 5'6", 215, a bleach blonde bomber with a streak of mean...
My dream woman, right here!!!
very romantic
Step aside William Perry...

Why aint songs written like this anymore. This tells a story.
Little to no talent out there
because people do not take ordinary life situations and turn them into a song anymore. And their arent very many good wordsmiths left
Because there's no soul and heart in musicians anymore there's good songs and sound but the heart and soul has died and has been dead for a long time
WAP told a story too. It just wasn't a very good one.
Style changes. Not because there is no talent anymore. Taste just changes.

And I ordered myself a couple o' more shots and beers
The night (you know) that I fell in love with a Roller Derby Queen
(Round 'n' round, oh round 'n' round)
The meanest hunk o' woman
That anybody ever seen
Down in the arena
She is a five foot six and two fifteen
A bleached-blonde mama with a streak of mean
She knew how to knuckle
And she knew how to scuffle and fight
And the roller derby program said
That she were built like a 'fridgerator with a head
The fans called her "Tuffy"
But all her buddies called her "Spike"
Round 'n' round, go round 'n' round (3 x's)
Well I could not help it but to fall in love
With this heavy-duty woman I been speakin' of
Things looked kind of bad
Until the day she skated into my life
Well she might be nasty she might be fat
But I never met a person who would tell her that
She's my big blonde bomber
My heavy handed Hackensack mama
Round 'n' round, go round 'n' round (3 x's)
