- Chapter 2: Anomalous Materials
After a lengthy tram ride, Gordon Freeman arrives at Sector C, home to the Anomalous Materials laboratory, where he's supposed to be helping conduct a high priority experiment for his science team. Already running half an hour late, Freeman nevertheless takes his time in greeting his colleagues, pulling shenanigans, and blowing up microwave casseroles on his way down to the lab, donning his trusty HEV suit along the way. Once in the lab proper, Freeman proceeds into the chamber with the Anti-Mass Spectrometer, all while noticing warning signs that something indescribable and out of this world is going to happen.
Playlist with all completed chapters:
• Black Mesa: Definitive...
Notes:
- For the sake of time, I did not include all of the optional dialogue in this chapter
- If Gordon repeatedly presses the panic button under the desk at the front lobby (3:10), the Guard will eventually say "Congratulations. You just made the top of my shitlist"
- Tossing objects at NPCs will result in a variety of interesting comments about Gordon (most of them negative)
- If Gordon does not push the sample into the beam, the Anti-Mass Spectrometer will eventually implode, which kills Gordon
Trivia:
- The Guard's comment about Freeman spending a lot of hours at the Hazard course (0:38) seems to rationalize Gordon's proficiency with firearms later on in the game
- The line about the ponytail at 1:11 is a reference to Gordon Freeman's HEV suit model in HL1, which sports a small ponytail
- Dr. Cross is referenced several times in this chapter, first by the Guard at 1:29, and then again by the Scientist at 9:51. Gina Cross is one of the two playable character in the Gearbox expansion Half-Life: Decay, alongside Collette Green. She is also the holographic trainer in the Hazard Course, seen only in HL1 and HL: OpFor. Needless to say it seems many of the staff at Sector C are very fond of her
- The VOX announcer is saying the names of Black Mesa devs when giving PAs to the science team (2:30)
- The computer screen at 2:42 displays a chat window between two scientists. This image was created by MarphitimusBlackimus, a RUclipsr well known for his in-depth analysis of Half-Life games. He won a contest for it in 2006, but the image was not added until 2015, once the game became available on Steam
- The two scientists talking about "TPS reports" are referencing the 1999 film "Office Space" (4:00), though in this case TPS stands for Thermal Protection System
-The G-man makes his second appearance at 6:00, arguing with a scientist. In HL1 the two never notice Freeman even if he stands there indefinitely
- At 7:30, the scientist mentions a "ROFLcopter". This is a VERY dated meme from the early 2000s, first popularized in World of Warcraft
- The "administrator" that the Guard is talking about at 8:14 is non other than Dr. Wallace Breen, one of the main antagonists in HL2
- The conversation at 8:39 can be taken as a reference to the developers and their take on a reimagining of HL1
- The microwave casserole that Gordon (canonically) destroys at 11:52 belongs to Dr. Magnusson, whom you meet in HL2EP2. Magnusson is famous for having a short temper, hence the worried reactions from the guard and scientist
- At 13:03, the contents of Freeman's locker are shown, which includes a diploma from MIT as well as a picture of a baby. Canonically, that is not Freeman's son
- (13:52) The original mod version of Black Mesa did not have a start-up animation/sequence for the HEV suit. The boot up sequence itself has also been re-done since its inception in the 2015 release
- At 14:47, it can be observed that suit chargers now charge much more quickly in the Definitive Edition
- Kleiner was retconned by the developers to be part of the scientist group that informs Gordon of the sample at 21:15
- As revealed by the scientist at 22:38, the Xen crystal that Freeman pushes into the Anti-Mass Spectrometer is coined "Sample GG3883"
- When making HL2, Valve retconned the scientist at 22:58 to become Eli Vance, which Black Mesa acknowledges. The generic NPC name for the HL1 scientist that Eli is based off is called "eli" in the game files
- The scientist on the left at 26:12 was voiced by Kevan Brighting, who also voiced the narrator in the game The Stanley Parable
- A "Resonance Cascade", as described at 26:36, is completely fictional and cannot happen in real life
- At 29:02, it can be seen on the console that the Emergency Shutdown is offline and in need of repairs, hence why the scientist wasn't able to shut it off during the Resonance Cascade
- At 29:55, the arms holding the emitters retract and leave the emitters rotating in mid-air
- Vortigaunts can be seen teleporting into Black Mesa at 31:15
Timestamps of critical moments:
Gordon dons the HEV suit --> 13:40

Gordon initiates the Anti-Mass Spectrometer --> 28:36
The Resonance Cascade --> 30:18
I had a hard time deciding how much of the chapter's dialogue I wanted to show - on one hand, this is really the only chapter in the game where you can mess around in the facility and get to know your colleagues before it all goes to hell, and Black Mesa does an excellent job of creating interesting and at times hilarious dialogue. On the other hand, I still wanted to keep the video entertaining, rather than have me standing in one spot for minutes just pressing "e" on NPCs. In the end I decided to lean more towards the latter, just because I feel like a lot of these lines are missed (such as going back to the starting area once Gordon gets the suit). However, if you are tired of sitting around waiting for the key moments to happen, I've provided timestamps.
As well, I wanted to balance out how much of the Resonance Cascade to show - while it would've been easy for me to stand in front of the Anti-Mass Spectrometer for the entire duration, I feel that Gordon in the game would have actively tried to stop the experiment, hence why I went for the console again.
half an hour to explore and talk to everybody , i wonder if freeman did all that canonicaly , anyway good video as always :)
@@santinodelossantos7152 Gordon was already half an hour late for work, why not make it another half hour ;P
After the countless of times i played Black Mesa, I try to play as realistically. Like, Gordon would panic at the Surface Tension Gargantua section. I like playing like that, it's fun.
18:19 You missed one last option, This guard mentions a poker game eventually.
Mr. I can take clips from black table only anomalous materials and unforeseen consequences and I will put the links that are his is that I am making a video .ai since I do not know if it catches the 15.ai but as this I do not know how to say the word but there is another Different page called uberduck that there I am doing some voices of the half life that if you give me permission to use that two videos but taking clips I do not understand me and there I will put the original videos okay I would appreciate it that as I am a good person I keep promises that
You gotta love how there's the one guy who's concerned about Gordon's safety even as the Anti-Mass Spectrometer is melting down. Dude's first impulse is the safety of his colleagues. Love it
Yeah, that guy was also one of the few in the control room that didn't rag on the fact that Gordon was late. I'd imagine him and Gordon got along pretty well pre-cascade.
@@Sexy_Nutella but he died.
Or did he ?????🤨
@@mr.banana2370 *vsauce music starts*
15:40 Oh no you forgot take H.E.V charger
Don't worry i grab it in the next chapter :)
Too bad that "Administrator behind you" gag isn't scripted, and the guard says that he "got you" even if you stare him in the eye the whole time
I'm late, but: it can still make sense even if you keep staring at him, because Gordon's expression could have changed
The irony of this game: the characters have sooooo many dialogues that not even open world games can come close to Black Mesa. Most open World games's NPC have generic dialogues, but this game feels so real and grounded with the dialogue, you really feel like you are part of the Black Mesa facility.
I completely agree - the sheer amount of dialogue here is just amazing, like you said it really makes the facility feel lived in, and that you are closely acquainted with many of your colleagues. Great world-building
@@Sexy_Nutella it also makes the disaster a whole lot depressing to think about.
“Now where did I leave that shutdown procedure chart?”
Oh no.
Those folks at the Anomalous Materials lab sure are competent eh?
I love how curious the Vorts seem to be about Gordon at the end. The first one calling his friends over and then them cautiously trying to reach out and touch Gordon. They almost seem like curious children.
I wonder if they already knew that he would be the one to free them, given that they can observe events in the future.
i think the scientist at 14:45 is referencing the old, olive-colored HEV suit in the half life beta. you may remember it as the one worn by "Ivan the Space Biker"
6:19 Gman said "My employers"..
Wow nice job at that
And "You're a scientist, I'm a frog, blah blah"
"I worked on the underwater breathing apparatus, but it was eventually discarded."
that would've been useful. *flash-forward to later in the game*
*Has PTSD about the Icthys in Apprehension
I like how it also references cut content from the OG game.
I like how it also references cut content from the OG game.
@TheCoolEevee someone got trouble posting their reply.
I swear Half Life looked this good way back when I was a kid
Haha, I feel that way about games I played back then too - I played Medal of Honor Allied Assault back in the day and just watched videos of it again recently. Remembered it looking a LOT better in my head.
Brings back memories. I finished Half Life when I was recovering after a circumcision. HAHAHA
8:14 scared me for a while
I totally thought Breen was going to show up the first time I played.
@@Sexy_Nutella True ^^^^
But we cant see Breen anyway,
Only GMan (Government Man)
@@Sexy_Nutella Same. Considering I've played half-life 2 and therefore KNOW Breen exists in the Source engine, I figured that maybe they were going to spawn him in. I don't know if that joke would have the same effect on someone who has never played half-life 2 before.
4:48 I like the fact that the BMCE mod decided to make the Male Scientist's shirt match the Female Scientist's since in default, they both wear different blue color outfits. It makes a good consistency between them.
Yeah, the BMCE mod really spruced up the character models :)
The best part of hl is, you have a reason for having the health meters.
I always thought it was due to the helmet's visor on the HEV suit..
Damn Crowbar Collective does good humor. When that Security Guard tricked you about the Administrator.
Yup. I really wish I could experience this chapter for the first time again. You can really tell how passionate the team was when they made it, with all the easter eggs, references to other games, and such.
Hearing security guys voice again make me want Blue Shift remakes like Insecurity or Guard Duty. Don't know what happening to Insecurity though.
Guard Duty along with Operation Black Mesa is still in development by Tripmine studios and constanly teasing us with updates in Facebook.
26:21 Is nobody going to point out the guy on the left is *literally* the same voice actor for the narrator in The Stanley Parable? It legit took me a sec to notice the way he usually spoke, but now I can't unnotice it.
Yeah it's a pretty neat cameo role
The combination of the aged animations and voice lines and new graphics is kind of hilarious
Haha I definitely feel that a bit, but I'm always nostalgic for the Source engine so I view it more in a positive light :)
@@Sexy_Nutella Yeah, same for me! I just think it's funny too.
I love how in every situation every character reacts so naturally to everything now, including you, especially im 23:12 when Eli was expresses shock at the broken circuits. Even the dialogue is dynamic🙂❤️❤️❤️
Indeed. The scripting in Source games have always had a charm to how they have NPCs reacting to events.
Man, your thumbnail game is off the charts this time around! This game is looking bigger and better than ever before!
Thumbnails are pretty underrated when it comes to Half-Life videos. I try to make every one eye-catching but also relevant to the chapter's story :)
Doctor: Don't touch that!
Her: *spams E on her keyboard epicly*
What a menace, bro really pushed the fire alarm just to get that guard in trouble.
Freeman just loves to pull pranks on everyone ;)
@@Sexy_Nutellajust like that one "Sensei." (wink wink)

"You should've brought your passport, Gordon!"
--- Dr. Coomer (Half-Life VR, but the AI is self-aware)
“Are you that F U C K E R who F U C K E D this whole experiment up?”
“You think I fucked it up? You think I FUCKED IT UP?”
“I think YOU F U C K E D it up!”

4:55 he never got his pepperoni pizza :(
least he didn't have to bring it all the way to Xen ;)
I like how my man's taking his time ducking around
Just another day at the office xD
You're presenting this game really well. I liked the previous playthrough already. I'm excited to see this run 😀
Thanks! Glad you're excited :)
I can't unimagine Gordon sitting there watching the resonance cascade with some popcorn
Haha. "FREEMAN YOU FOOL!"
7:31 Imagine some "nihahahaha" and the scientist says, "That does it! Whatever buffoon just ruined my morning, I'm going to have some serious talks with them!"
soisoisoisoisoisoisoisoisoi
2:45 and 3:12 Lmao Gordon is like that frolicky kid who disturbs others in class..
Seeing all the interactions makes me want to play a mod where nothing goes wrong.
Also at 8:00, that was a nice 1984 reference (famous novel by George Orwell for those who don't know)
Perhaps there's a mod like that around!
@@Sexy_Nutellayeah, theres mods on the workshop that show various levels before the incident/if the incident never happened
13:55
It's time to suit up ;)
4:38 :D
Love how it implies Freeman is ALWAYS late or a no show for work xD
Security and scientist Was in race that if Gordon comes, security win a lunch, i liked the female scientist reaction xD
10:47 I just noticed this is actually the same security guard who fights alongside you against the headcrab zombies in unforseen consequences.
Me encanta como vives la situacion en la piel del personaje, sin apresurarte.
The scientists are smart, but the guards are smart asses. I am glad we have two types of intelligences co-existing to make black Mesa lively
8:05 I'm a little sad we didn't come back to this guard with the suit on; he eventually comments on your ass and it makes me laugh.
"Yeah, th-- the suit looks great... a bit snug in the back though, buddy."
Technically, I suppose you could call any situation in which one resonance subsequently triggers others a "resonance cascade".
When I was a kid I always thought a resonance cascade as depicted in this game was a real science phenomenon that could happen. I was a bit disappointed when I found out it was purely fiction hahaha
I’ve noticed how fluid and smooth your mouse movement is with these videos. How much control must you have with your hand to be able to move with an almost robotic level of precision?
I appreciate that you commented on that; it indeed requires a lot of control as I basically never let the mouse move off the mousepad. I also have to exert more force to ensure that my movements are slower and more "cinematic". Occasionally I get cramps or aches because of how tightly and rigidly I hold it haha
@@Sexy_Nutella Yeah, I can see how much effort that would take. Props to you!
@@JustAGamerPerson Thank you! :)
i love how whenever gordon is about to do something hes not supposed to (i.e. screwing up the microwave) he looks over his shoulder to make sure nobody's watching
27:58 its almost like they know
I absolutely love the way you portray pre-cascade Gordon: someone who just wants to talk and chill or have some fun but also stay professional (pls correct me if im wrong i love hearing the different ways ppl think of Gordon
2:52
Rude scientist :(
Lo que puede hacer la comunidad ❤ es increible todo el amor que recibe este juego
Se lo merecen, por todo el trabajo increíble que hicieron = D
Disclaimer: no casseroles were harmed in the making of this game
23:01 Don't know what Magnusson
11:30 Huge HLVRAI fan here, I feel like this line could’ve inspired Coomer’s first line. I know Holly played black mesa up to interloper some time before act 4 commentary, so perhaps she just remembered this and said it? Or maybe im just fucking insane
1:31 looks like someone has a crush 😳
It's funny how many people do in that chapter. There's that scientist that is rehearsing how he will greet Dr. Cross in a corner by himself
26:21 Why do This guy sound like Sound like the narrator from the Stanley Parable
The Anomalous Material looks like the same gold coloured crystal the Nihilanth's brain is made from. I wonder if there is a connection.
4:38 NOOO THEY FIXED FLOOPY TIE MAN!!!
Haha I remember that being a hilarious bug in the mod days
This chapter is so difficult with hard mode... How did you do it?
20:02 I'm sure they really did compensate for any contingency, other than the Spectrometer's E-Stop button being broken.
Hahaha. Typical Black Mesa negligence
12:00 The microwave casserolle!!
I wish they would remake Blue Shift & Opposing Force with this new Source Engine, that would be absolutely extraordinary!
Another team, Tripmine Studios, is handling the two games you are talking about, though there is currently a Black Mesa mod for Blue Shift: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2424633574
I was looking for this video translated into Arabic, thank you very much
I guess it's an automatic translation because I never did it myself haha. Glad it worked for you though!
Is there a video online that shows the anti-mass spec. imploding due to Gordon refusing to insert the sample?
I'm sure there are!
Looks like Black Mesa has an engaging work environment… NOT 😂
Gordon's colleagues actually seem people I'd love to have a beer with (well, maybe just the Guards). The workplace safety though is definitely questionable.
22:07
Bro, I can't take this Scientist seriously with his head size 🤣💀
Haha, it does look rather large :P
@sexy nutella if you keep standing next to that guy from 18:5x
he would say something about being on that picture,
kinda easter egg i think?
worth to show it
That is super cool. I likely won't make a video just to show that though. Do you know what he says? I'm curious to know.
@@Sexy_Nutella He says something like "I've been told my other side looks better" and "I'm handsome!"
25:22 well after he had a vacation in heaven
25:55 hahahaha!
*visible concern
Wow, you made an amazing job by showing almost (but not all) every dialogues in this chapter. Such a good attention for details.
I hope you won't miss radios in next chapters (Black Mesa emergency broadcasts on 'Office Complex' (after turning off first electricity switch and breaking trought window), 'We've Got Hostile' (in booth nearby the rail cart) and 'Surface Tension' (in broken security car before Garg chase)); and military radios on 'Surface Tension' (1st - after military ambush when you're in the vent; 2nd - after fight off Alien Grunts after the gates and 3rd in tower while observing Osprey destruction)). They make a great picture of situation beyond BMRF after The Resonance Cascade.
Ive played through this game before so I will definitely show off the radio broadcasts. Although I don't think there is a radio in WGH - do you mean Blast Pit? WGH doesn't have a rail cart - unless this is something new in 1.5
@@Sexy_Nutella Yup, it's 'Blast Pit' in original Half-Life, but as I remember in Black Mesa this part technically is still part of 'We've Got Hostile'; and 'Blast Pit' chapter starts only after you've been attacked by Houndeyes after exiting the elevator just outside Tentacles' silo.
@@KyJIaK71rus I think it's still the same chapter start as HL1, so Blast Pit starts right after the scientist opens the silo doors for you in WGH. If so I do recall where the radio is in that chapter.
I love this play through because you’re actually interacting with everything unlike others don’t. I love it!
"have a very safe day"
*Makes a portal allowing aliens to invade and take over black Mesa which gets the military involved who also want to kill.him and all the scientists at black Mesa*
Right after the scientist says get away from the beam, when the cascade begins, I always try to stop it from happening by pulling the cart back away from the beam, but of course it doesn't really make any difference, it stretches the energy all the way to the wall no matter how much distance away from the center of thee crystal specimen gets
This made me want to replay black mesa again
Always a good time to replay :)
nice
Very nice!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed :)

What were some of the big changes of this update? I know they updated your first encounter with the Gargantuan.
Off the top of my head:
- Lots of art updates and polish throughout the game
- Major overhaul of Power Up's level design
- Map B of On a Rail was changed, there's a different rocket puzzle now and different interactions with the security guard
- Overhaul of all the outdoor areas of the game (improved textures, more world objects, better lighting)
- Lots of bug fixes
I have a question always when i try to start the chapters xen and gonarchs lair the game crahes/closes does anyone have that problem too or is that just me ?
Are you using an old save? Try starting a new game on those chapters. Otherwise, you can always try asking on the Black Mesa Discord or the Steam forums
@@Sexy_Nutella so its just me good to know well i guess im gonna ask for help then
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
I didn't see much changes there.
You're right. According to the patch notes:
- Prevented the player from being able to use the HEV charger next to the suit pickup before the suit battery functions of the suit had initialized. This prevents an odd edge-case bug where if you did that, your HUD would disappear forever.
- Moved the toilet paper slightly closer to the edge of the sink, to make it easier for players to grab
- Improved lighting on AM lockers
The toilet paper change is definitely the highlight ;)
@@Sexy_Nutella Yup. Of course, giving this guy toilet paper in my first playthrough was the most intuitive thing to do. :)
Is this that one game with that G dude or something?
The G-man yup :)
