You have no idea how useful this is Juan. I got into the hobby maybe 5~ years ago, and a video like this would have saved me lots. You're saving many others with this. Respect. 💫
This is one of the most informative and overall greatest videos I have seen in a while. Can't wait until everyone starts copying it (I'm serious, can't wait to see what other folks come out with, where things overlap and differ, etc). I have 90% of the colors and maybe 80% of the actual paints, but the missing 10% shows some gaps to fill.
I really wish more painters on RUclips would do videos like this. I've picked up a bunch of new paints to try from this video.other creators need to follow suit and do their own. Also do part two. We need all the knowledge.
Always enjoy a video like this, not just because it might highlight a paint I haven't seen or used before, but also because of the thinking behind each choice. Thanks for the work!
The problem is you can't, the darker tones are not doable as they are by nature transparent. Also I don't get the obsession for ultra coverage, transparent paints are amazing
I love this! I love seeing my favourite watercolour artists' palette choices, and it's really fun and inspiring to see your take on a "mini painter's paint palette"! I hope other youtube mini painters follow your example and do their own takes! I'll be here for the "specialty paint palette" too for sure.
A hugely useful video. It has made me think about the paints I have from a different perspective. And 'yes please', a similar video on metallics, shades, washes etc would be most welcome.
I'm just getting back into miniature painting after a 15 year break and the whole hobby has changed. There are so many different paint makers, new colours, new systems like transparent one-coat paints, zenithal, slap-chop, and more! It's a great time to start painting with so much choice, but there are a LOT of choices! I have decided on the Xpress range based on your videos, but I also realise that I will need to supplement them with regular acrylics. Thanks for doing this video, Juan. It will really help focus my choices - not just on the paints you suggested, but on the categories (cold, warm, hues, saturation, versatility, etc). I also really like the idea of making a colour swatch. I'm going to steal that!
This is an extremely useful video! It seems that no one really made a concise video about best (or most loved) paints broken down into these categories. I also would very much like to see more of this content, and not just only about metallics, but also a possible extension to 100 paints.
100% enjoy videos like this and the effort put forth. I refer to your Vallejo xpress quite often and bought like 20 of them already because of it. Thanks JH
Thank you very much. That was really helpful! I am starting into historical figures and I was trying to figure out some paints. Amazingly you had some on your chart.
id love to see something like a 20 paint expansion set of only contrast, washes, inks, or metallics! pretty much anything that isn't your standard acrylic paint.
Haven't used GW products in two decades and will never use. So for me Vallejo and AK paints all the way. With an occasional Ammo for MiG. As contrast replacements I use Army Painter Speedpaints 2.0 and Vallejo Xpress and having an absolute blast with them.
Absolutely a contrasts, metallics, washes and technicals paint video would be brilliant to round out the set. Maybe include primers and mediums and you'd have a couple of videos that basically equates to a full starter set. Would be badass. Thank you for the video!
This video is great and given me some good ideas like using a transparent blue like infantry blue for shadows! ❤ As someone who has all the GW paints, but only a handful of anything else I’d love to know the key paints you’d pick up that GW has no good alternative for
Wow this is absolutely fantastic. A new(ish) painter here, and have wasted lots of money on paints, that I probably used 3 times or less, and information like this is invaluable. Perfect video mate, for me arrives 1 year late, but back in the day when I was building my paint arsenal I spent hours and hours on RUclips searching for a video exactly like this one, but it didn't exist. Congrats, hope you release the second part soon
If you want to see a truly awesome bone triad you must check out the three from Reaper. It leans more towards the grey spectrum and it really makes bone pop, though you probably wouldn't want to paint a whole skeleton army or such with them.
Juan; Great video; very good explanations of your choices. Would love to see part 2 with metallics, contrasts, and technical paints. Thanks and keep the videos rolling.
I agree in that you appreciate different brands as I also do. I really am however enjoying the Two Thin Coats line and am surprised you didnt include any from this.
Coming across this video again and it really hit home for me atm. I've tried, in alphabetical order, Ak 3rd gen, old and new Army Painter warpaints, Citadel, Pro Acryl, old and new Vallejo Game and Model color, and Two Thin Coats. Ak is my favorite, Vallejo is next, I prefer the game/model color skin tones and lighter colors for example, Citadel for effect paints and washes as well as contrast and a handful of random colors like thunderhawk blue. Then Two Thin Coats makes my favorite metallics. I've tried metallics from so many brands and I keep wanting to just go back to TTC. I have some new model color metallics that I need to work through atm then back to TTC
Great video, would like to see the same for contrast type paints. For me a limited paint set should have colors that are either hard to mix or that mix well with others. In the latter, my 2 pics that weren't mentioned would be Mournfang Brown and Bugmans Glow. Also, probably a separate matte and gloss black
For Corax white I love Ghost Gray from Game Colour same colour none of the issues. I was so disappointed when it was discontinued. I have two and a half bottles left and dread the bay i run out it is so useful
I really like this! I’ve been working on filling out my collection slowly, and I have several gaps to fill. Especially blues..I only have one blue that isn’t an ink or speedpaint.
Thank you for this, and please do the follow-up. Decision paralysis is a real thing for me, which is why my brain says get them all, even if it is overkill.
Thanks for sharing Juan - so interesting to hear all of those snippets you drop in your videos about coverage, tone, finish and highlighting grouped together. Can we have a conversation about the difference between teal and turquoise though? 😜
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures your video was indeed very helpful as I just started and I don’t really know how to build a set of „basic colors“. Should I always look for a midtone/highlight/shadow for each color?
Very fun and informative video...hope you make the 2nd video you mentioned. Ironically I learn about some colours to add to my range, which pushes it well past 50 :oD
Interesting video. I'd love to see you break down the Army Painter Fanatic 'complete set' into minimum actual triads, rather than their over extended six colours.

My son is 6 and he paints more than I do, but he hasnt grasped shading and highlighting let alone mixing. He does some cool stuff with apple barrel or whatever, but it would be nice to step his collection up without worrying he's going to waste too much by over filling his pallette.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures lots of potential too. Paints for beginners, paints for young painters, metallics and technicals, speedpaint types, best tasting paints, best 50 blue paints...

Great video, and good to see Deck Tan in there. A similar style palette video with contrast and metallics would be most welcome. Thank you for sharing your top 50 )O(
Very good picks in here, definitely a good all-round list, and it has a lot of my go-to colours in it already. Even if I did take what you said about Dark Sea Blue and Incubi Darkness being basically the same personally, ha. There's still a few things you just won't be able to mix properly, like a pure quinacridone magenta, but part of the challenge is having to cut some corners like that. And I'm guessing that particular colour might show up in the Contrast-type/ink list, since there's translucent options you could glaze it in with, like Sigvald Burgundy.
Yeah, you have to make tough choices and I would love to have a pure Magenta but it's also not a colour I use much so it's not a priority for me. I already have a couple small changes I want to make, like unifying the cold browns and bones into one and add a very bright yellow green and a pure blue.
I would have loved to see that video when i started with the hobby. Would have helped not buying so many colors i never use :-) Please do a part 2 for metallics and Contrast paints. Thanks
Im forever stuck on what to buy lol but pro acryl i think is the most tempting. Im moving away from citadel but ill try and identify my favourites from them
Great choices and there's some paint there that I definitely need to pick up and try. I will say though that everyone goes crazy for pro acryl white but I found a white that's even better, Nuclear White from Green stuff world. If you've not tried it then pls pick up a bottle, you won't be let down.

I like squid pink by Vallejo, And the blues from Pro-Acryl, but overall a lot of the paints you've listed I've never tried, vallejo's kind of hard to get where I live. So I appreciate the video it'll at least get me to try different paints
video suggestion, pick the worst GW sculpts that can still be purchased on the GW online store and paint them to a high standard that makes them look great!

Ill second the Corax White love. As far as a "white" paint goes, its a good white paint for basing. Far better than White Scar, which is, at best, so-so.
So fun, I just bought my 50 + shades + metallic paints last week after 14 years without structuring my paint collection… 😅 I will watch the video to see if I did something good or not XD

Excelente video!!!! Yes, Part II and III and IV please! Washes, MM, and NMM, we want it all! Gracias por todos los videos que nos ayudan a mejorar nuestra pasion para pintar miniaturas!
Gracias!!
Metallics - 100%
My go to white is a craft paint: Apple Barrel Snow White.
Nice
Uno de los mejores videos que he visto desde que empecé a pintar minis,,, de haberlo sabido antes, me habría ahorrado un buen dinero. Espero esa segunda parte con ganas. Enhorabuena!
Gracias!
Amazing and very informitive video, I'd love to see more!
Thanks
Was amazed to find out i already have about 75% of these, now ordering the ones i didnt have , thx JH looking forward to using the new ones :)
NICE
Very cool idea! Surprised so few AK paints made it on the list
The main issue is most of them overlap Vallejo and I personally prefer Vallejo myself.
That being said most Vallejo paints can be substituted for AK
Interesting video Juan. I’ve got into Vallejo paints again instead of citadel. Pro acrylic looks good. Might have to buy a few bottles.
Mahogany is a MUST HAVE paint with capital letters.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Thanks for the tip. Mahogany it is.
Thank you
Happy to help
I like squid pink by Vallejo, And the blues from Pro-Acryl, but overall a lot of the paints you've listed I've never tried, vallejo's kind of hard to get where I live. So I appreciate the video it'll at least get me to try different paints
Thanks
video suggestion, pick the worst GW sculpts that can still be purchased on the GW online store and paint them to a high standard that makes them look great!
Great idea, what would you suggest?
@@JuanHidalgoMiniaturessubjective of course, more 'old kits with non-spectacular box art' than bad sculpts 1. Inquisitor kamarov, 2. lokhust destroyers 3. chaos bikers 4. chaos spawn 5. space marine ATV
I would love to see part 2!!
Thanks!!
Mark Rosewater, the head of RnD at Wizards for Magic the Gathering says on his podcast all the time that 'restriction breeds creativity'
Indeed it does
Awesome video Juan, really enjoyed it. I always find an excuse to use Mahogany, beautiful colour.
SO GOOD!
I am almost finished doing this in my own paint station, but mostly using Vallejo Game Color paints, and I have to face the facts : I'm gonna have to pick up a bottle of Pink Horror and transfer it to a dropper bottle xD
Thank you for the video, Juan, looking forward to part 2 with metallics, washes and technical paints
Pink Horror is AMAZING!
ProAcryl also makes fantastic blues.
I'm getting the whole set very soon for review
Deff do another video on other types of paints
Thanks
Thank you - great video!
Thanks for watching!
Ill second the Corax White love. As far as a "white" paint goes, its a good white paint for basing. Far better than White Scar, which is, at best, so-so.
My White Scar pot got yeeted out of the window years ago.
So fun, I just bought my 50 + shades + metallic paints last week after 14 years without structuring my paint collection… 😅 I will watch the video to see if I did something good or not XD
Nice
100% agreed on the Scale Artist paint tasting good. Definitely do not use this if you are trying to break the habit of brush licking. Just my words of advice for anyone reading this. 🙃
WHY DO THEY TASTE SO GOOD??!!
