Ed is one of the only main characters in media that I truly love. I usually love the supporting characters a lot more than the main character, cause the MC (especially male MCs) tend to be the same hero archetype. But Ed isn’t. He’s not the strongest fighter. He even says it, admitting his brother is a better fighter than him. His alchemy isn’t the most powerful. That honour most likely belongs to Roy Mustang (and yes, I know Hohenheim and Father are more powerful, but I’m talking about humans who aren’t fuelled by philosopher stones. Just their own knowledge) and Ed knows that he has a lot to learn. He has a healthy survival instinct (if we ignore that one time in episode 5, but he needed to learn it somehow), and doesn’t seek out conflict just for the sake of fighting. His strength is his wisdom, and his compassion. Ed shows compassion even to his most despised rivals. He hates Envy, but he shows him compassion. He hates Scar, but he wouldn’t kill him, and would even team up with him at times. He despises his father, but when Hohenheim offers to sacrifice his life Ed is disgusted. Ed is smart, dedicated, and compassionate, and that’s what makes him an amazing protagonist, and a very unusual one in the landscape of shonen anime and manga.
The most astonishing and great thing is that he projects his inner self hatred and blame onto his father. Just when Hohenheim wants to sacrifice himself for Al Ed forgives him and through that himself. In that moment he realizes how he can save his brother: By giving up his rigid view of the world and himself (his own portal of truth) which involves accepting his human flaws. That is great writing and in an Anime/Manga no less.
As a massive FMA fan, I love this video. Ed’s sense of morality was always an aspect I found was this series strongest element. Arakawa always professed that FMA is a story about emotion and intent. This in relation to Alchemy which is described at a science. For while knowledge is great, it’s intent can often be nefarious/ selfish. Ed represents the cost of that ability. And thus is the foundation of his morality. Because Ed logically could have used the stone and gotten his and Al’s body back. But he saw that as the easy way. And not the right, no the moral way. And it is his willingness to stick by his creed while learning is what makes me love him. And solidified why FMA is my favorite anime of all time.

I also notice that Ed never defeated anyone besides Father (With the help of almost every cast) and Pride (Weakened due to the human Transmutation he has done and Kimblee's interference). This is what I love the MC was not the one who defeated every single enemy like in most Anime. Many characters contributed or the ones defeating the antagonist. Wrath alone was insane, it took Scar, Buccaneer, Greed/Ling and Fu just to defeat him. Mustang was really the OP by defeating Lust and Envy (Somewhat). They aren't trapped, its literally using the entire worth of a human life for your own goals. Those people were killed to make the stone, it would be wrong to use something you gained through the murder of another person to satisfy your own desire.
Same, what really gets me is what is Edward gonna do with his life now? He's basically spent forever building this one skill and now he has no career to fall back on, then again, he is 15 so he has time to get a skill (also that "saved the entire country" thing should get him a pentate for L I F E) but yeah
I’m sad this was one of the first anime’s I’ve watched... I’m also incredibly guilty of showing this to someone who’s never watched anime before! FMA is impossible to beat!
4:10 That is not the gun Ed had. He never lost his gun, as he had it with him inside Gluttony and would later return it to Hawkeye. I believe that is the pistol of a military police guy who was trying to shoot Scar but could not and was blown away or something so his gun fell to the ground. I was always surprised that Winry knew how to shoot a gun.
As much as i love FMA:B it pains me that ed just threw away hoheinheims offer to bring back al, all he ends up doing is dying later near his wifes grave without impacting ed or als lives, after the final fight hoheimheim does nothing to add or subtract from the plot and i feel as from eds stubborn hatred towards his father he chooses to give up something much more valuable to him than hoheinheim in trade for al. Who to state again dies 5 minutes later in the show anyway without impacting anything and leaving Ed, at the time the most capable alchemist in the show without a way to do alchemy only getting back his human arm and still loosing his father.
Lol absolutely not bro. Hohenheim impacted the story so much with father relationship with him, he saved ed and al and explained the Plan to them di defeat dwarf. He Is Also the Only one that understands fathers Will. and it would be co-traded if he sacrificed his father's life, instead much better to have concluded the philosophy of the protagonist of "alchemy does not make you superior, I will always be a" vile human being. "With the exciting scene of hohenheim at the end
Edward was not the most capable alchemist, and as i explained the fact that he loses his alchemy was right for the defeat of the "truth" and for the ending, that is the difference between Edward, the one who understood that he is being an alchemist, or not, however, remains a human being .. and father, the exact opposite. it's a fantastic and satisfying ending
I don't really think Ed saved Mustang from "losing a part of himself" because if you remember he already lost that when he murdered a bunch of people in the war

When he killed Lust he did it quickly in order to save his friends. He only fought to protect himself and the others..in the fight aganst Envy on the other hand he tells people to let him have him. He isn't fighting to protect but only to satisfy his own lust for revenge.

Ok so the one thing I never understood about FMA is Ed giving up alchemy. So he gave up his gate, but alchemy is a science that he learned, so doesn't that mean he should still be able to transmute with a circle
The door of truth is what enables anyone to do alchemy. Knowing it exists negates the need for a circle, but circles ultimately only exist to make a gateway to that door. Without the door in the first place, the circle loses its ability to start an alchemic reaction.
