I really like your analysis. My only criticism is that for the "Support Network" part, you didn't include Riza. Riza and Maes are the only two people Roy is close to and comfortable enough with to share his grief and confide in them. Riza stood by Roy when they visited Maes grave, she even asked Roy if he was ok when he expressed understanding why the Elrics performed Human Transmutation. Roy no doubt felt terribly alone in the aftermath of Hughes' death, but he wasn't- Riza was always there, with him and for him. It was Riza, and ONLY Riza, who got Roy to spare Envy, by putting her life in his hands. For all of Roy's justified anger and rage, there was only one person he valued more than his revenge- the woman he loves.

So i wrote this video like six months ago, but if i remember correctly my thought process went like this. Mustang had many people around him who could have made an excellent support network, but Maes was the only person who knew about his darkest thoughts and tendencies. Riza was always available to Mustang, and visa versa, but they never truly admitted their brokenness to each other. Their arcs end with them each confessing their brokenness to each other and finally reaching the intimacy that they always needed in order to properly heal.
Maybe i could have conveyed that better.
      Thank you for the comment.

@@wyattthewordweaver1992 I just came across this video so sorry for the late reply. But I disagree. Riza, I think knew Mustang more than even Maes. She knew him long before Hughes. And she was very much aware of Roy's darkness and brokenness.
Her father taught him everything about alchemy and she's the one who trusted him enough to reveal to him the flame alchemy secrets by her father who didn't want Roy to know them coz of his joining military. Both of them joined the army to bring good changes and then Ishvalan war came and broke both of them with unbearable guilt. She even asked him to burn the alchemy secrets etched on her skin. He asked her to shoot him if he went astray from his goal of redemption. She vowed to kill herself after shooting him. Hearing this in his bloodlust haze towards Envy, was what brought him to his senses. You can't get any darker than that. The burden they shared and the brokenness and how it came about, I don't think any other character knew better.

I don't agree with one of your points. Even Riza thanked Scar for getting through to Roy in sparing Envy. Because she knew Roy so well she knew that she alone may not have been enough to get through to Roy to stop. Ed also took Envy literally out of Roy's reach so that he didn't just go ahead and kill the homunculus.

@@plingploong Riza thanking Scar doesn't mean much because Roy only stood down when Riza threatened her own life on his account. Roy even tells Ed later that Riza is the to thank for stopping him when Ed tries to take credit.

ALMOST? Hey you gotta be honest here, Mustang during the Lust fight was ABSOLUTELY sexy. But seriously though I thought the animation was more fluid at that moment, and the absolute awesomeness of his pose contributed a lot to that feeling.

My favourite version of fma has to be the manga. His introduction felt stronger than 03 and especially brotherhood. The first frame we see of him is a low shot of him and Riza bursting into their office while discussing the terrorists on the train. The low shot establishes his power and dominance from the moment we look at him which is a great first impression of him. Another thing I love about his character development early on is how, up until ca chapter 20-ish, everything we know about him is bad. We know he holds high power in the morally corrupt military, his first reaction when he saw 12-year-old Ed was to yell at him, he had no problem recruiting a LITERAL CHILD into the military because he believes that it will benefit himself, he is rumored to be a lazy womanizer who doesn't care about anyone, and he is terrifyingly powerful. Due to the way he was introduced I was sure that he would turn out to be one of the bad guys in the end and I think that was exactly what Arakawa wanted. But after a while most of the things we believe about him start to get contradicted and we start doubting everything we know about him. We learn that the reason he wanted to gain a higher rank by enlisting Ed into the military wasn't for personal pride but so that he could eventually deconstruct the oppressive military dictatorship and bring justice to the Ishvalan genocide. His womanizer facade falls away when we discover that all his "dates" are just meetings where exchanges information with his "sisters". The notion that he is self-centered and lazy is crushed when we see Roy risk his life to save Al, Riza and Havoc even if they were all as good as dead. We also know that Roy is fully aware of these rumours about him, likely because he himself was the one who made them in the first place. Roy is extremely powerful but most of his plan to become Führer relies on people underestimating him. He is extremely young comapred to most other people hold the position of a colonel and if the people in power notice how big of a threat he is to them he would likely never be able to reach the position of Führer because he would just be sent away to some remote base like General Armstrong. So he builds a wall of lies and rumours around himself to ensure that they will never see him as anything other than a pathetic brown-noser until it's too late. He is always five steps ahead of everyone by pretending to be five steps behind them.
I really enjoyed your analysis of him and I feel like you captured him really well (which is hard because he's such a complex character full of contradictions)!

At 20:44 I'd like to think that 2 people made up Roy Mustang's support system, Maes Hughes and Riza Hawkeye. Both of them went through the Ishvalan war together, have sins they cannot atone for, and are well acquainted with one another. Yes, Maes Hughes dies which is why the thought of Riza dying in both her encounter with Gluttony and during their battle against Bradley pushes Roy emotionally. He lost Maes, he can't lose Riza: he can't lose his last lifeline.
This is supported by the scene wherein Riza has to pause in order to deal with gluttony. As Roy screams frantically at the phone, we see a flashback to Maes Hughes' death. This suggests that Roy holds Riza in the same light, or at least as valuable and important as Hughes. One can argue that this is simply a portrayal for PTSD, but throughout the series we don't see him having similar flashbacks of hughes when someone else is put in a position where they are likely to die.
I really enjoyed your character analysis, hope to see more for other characters in the series.

The cruel irony of the Envy Execution is that Mustang fell, becoming the beast and warmachine he always believed he was. It wasn’t the war crimes that cause him to sink to beasthood- it was vengeance.
The greater tragedy is that he doesn’t even seem to realize it himself.

One of the most interesting relationship in fiction. There are so many layers intertwined that I almost cannot think out Roy or Riza individually now.
If it can help Arakawa said that those two would have married if there was no military regulation forbidding relationship between soldiers. Considering that if she ever write another story in this world it would be Mustang's purchase to the post of fuhrer, there's still hope. ^^
Speaking of Arakawa, it is said that the woman on the picture isn't her. She seems very protective about her privacy and would have only few picture of her on the net, with a low resolution that makes her practically no recognizable.

This is a really impressive analysis. I can see you put a lot of work and a lot of research into it. The only two things that kind of bugged me about it was the fact that you stated you felt that it was the death of Maes Hughes which convinced Mustang to climb the ranks, make it to Fuhrer and change the country and Ishval. That was a decision he made back when he and Hughes were in Ishval. In one of the flashback episodes he's standing with Hughes and staring at Bradley, saying how good it must feel from up in that position, Hughes tells him that he has his support and that he would remain in the ranks below him to push Mustang to the top. The death of Hughes might fuel the fire under Mustang's ass(if you pardon the pun) to make it to the top and hurry on his goal, but I don't think it's what caused that goal. The other instance is that you stated that you felt Hawkeye always intended on committing suicide. I really don't believe that to be the case, I think she really only came to that decision when she saw Mustang losing himself. The vicious nature that came out reminded her of her father going mad creating Flame alchemy, she even said in regards to taking her own life that she would take her secrets of flame alchemy with her, an alchemy that has led good men to madness. I think she retained hope in Mustang as a powerful person because he seemed to keep that madness in check until that very point. That's just what I have to add on the matter though, aside from that this was a pretty spot on analysis. Very well put together.

    • @wyattthewordweaver1992
      @wyattthewordweaver1992  6 лет назад +3

      Thanks for the comment.
I see where you're coming from on the first point, but (and maybe i should have been more clear here) i never stated that that was when his desires began. It's obvious that's not the case. It's just that Hughes' death strengthens his resolve and pushes him down a darker path.
You're also not the only one to bring up the Hawkeye point (which i find more interesting.) I see where people are coming from, but i think that suicide is a far too serious thing for Hawkeye to bring it up without fully intending to follow through on it. I also think her suicidal tendencies stem a lot more from her guilt over the war crimes in Ishval than her desire to keep flame alchemy out of the hands of others. But that's just the way i interpret the character. No one's interpretation of the work is fully correct. That's part of the beauty of analysis.
      Anyway thanks for the compliment.

    • @sillylaeti
      @sillylaeti 7 месяцев назад

@@wyattthewordweaver1992my interpretatiom was that riza had been seriously considering suicide because of the guilt and trauma she felt from what she had done in ishbal and what she had enabled roy to do there with flame alchemy. The guilt and already lacking confidence she had due to her upbringing seemed to make her feel helpless in ever having the chance to atone for her sins, which is why she may have considered suicide in the past and now. roy mustang was the person she put her hope in to repair what had been destroyed in ishbal, which is why she fully supported him. When she saw him losing his sanity and empathy she believed she had to give up the hope of being able to at least support someone that would restore ishbal, the task she felt was the only thing she should be living for. i agree that it was not something she thought of suddenly when seeing roy loose himself but i dont believe it was what she was going to do inevitablely

mustang vs lust is a cold, focused, controlled rage. mustang vs envy is a hot, explosive, angry rage. the cold and focused rage is a trope used by many anime, leading to some of the best fights we ever see. This can be seen (albeit not nearly as masterfully) in bleach, for example, in Ichigo vs Aizen, or Byakuya vs Tsukishima. This contrasts the angry fight scenes where the protagonist lets out all their hate and rage to a point where it nearly (or in some cases does) consumes them. These two things make some of my favorite moments in anime

Also let us not forget in the fight against lust (As said in the show) He is fighting her in order to save his family and several other people that is about to or can get hurt by lust.
He doesn't do it for himself if anything he goes out of his way to do it despite he himself is still in a critical stage about to collaps at any minute.
He burn himself just to stop the bleeding so he wont die just yet in order to help his friends and save them. He nearly sacrifice himself to save the ones he cares about and that is ofcourse nothing more than heroic and righteous even lust admits that he is a great person at that moment.
Now the fight against envy on the other hand is only for himself. He doesn't tell people to leave it up to him so that they can run ahead of him and help them. No he does it only because he want them to not get in his way and possibly take his revenge away from him.
A few of the others seem to think he is doing it to help them but both Scare and Ed knows that isn't the case. He is just being completly selfish. The fact he even threatens Ed later on when he grabs Envy is more than evident of this.
Threatning to blow his arm up and thereby taking out one of their strongest fighters just so that he can get his revenge shows just how little he care about anyone.
He knows that the whole city and even the country is in danger yet he doesn't care ready to give it all up just to get his chance at revenge.
He is ready to give up on everything he had worked so hard towards, ready to give up even his now dead best friend's dream just to get revenge despite that being the last thing a man like that would have ever wanted in his life. If that isn't amazingly human I really don't know what is!

One thing that really impacted my enjoyment was the clear passion you have for the material - this is evident through the little bits of trivia (like Travis and Laura being married lol) and talking about the moments that really impacted you emotionally. The quote at 7:44 "You might be watching completely made up events represented by pixels on a screen but if those pixels can make you feel something down inside, if they can emotionally affect you then that makes them real in a way, at least to you" has really stuck with me over the years because not only is it completely true but it felt extremely validating. On a personal note, back when I was superduper into fma and would always infodump about it, people would always act judgemental about me being so passionate about just some anime (the undiagnosed autism didnt help lol) so hearing someone with the same passion for what I was into say that my love for fma was completely valid and helped me feel less insecure about my interests :)
The essay is also extremely effective through the down to earth teaching of the techniques. The script is understandable without being patronizing or overly simplistic while also being interesting and informative. Naming the techniques and using specific scenes and quotes where they are used really helped me learn haha.

Pretty much everyone who experiences hate has an in depth reason for it, and will argue that it is intensely legitimate. Mustang's hate is warranted, but that doesn't make it reasonable or acceptable. Mustang's hatred forces away his loved ones, trivializes his aspirations and overrides his morals. Mustang's hate erodes everything that can be described as "Mustang." That is what prompts his loved ones to intervene.

@@wyattthewordweaver1992 I mean if you brought up the fact that he was about to hurt Ed just to get his revenge that would be one thing, but saying his hate is unreasonable or unacceptable simply because you think hate is never acceptable... that's naive at best and grotesquely snobbish at worst. Envy was an actual monster. It had the torture coming, and Roy was not lesser for being the one to deliver it. Certainly did not erode anything that made Mustang who he is. It was a very in-character facet of his personality. He has always fought fire with fire. Literally. Treated monsters monstrously. Ed and Riza refusing to let him "sink to that low" is just stupid. What prompted his loved ones to intervene was (besides moral snobbery being forcibly injected into the plot) their fear that what he was doing would irreversibly change him. That somehow drowning the sadistic slug in its own medicine made him as bad as it was and he had to be better. None of that makes any sense outside of completely imagined concerns.
In fact, I'd argue your way of thinking has a far higher chance of doing harm than Mustang's brand of hate does. It villainizes those who would otherwise cause no harm. It creates conflict where there isn't any and starts fights that do not need to happen in the real world.

I've watched several FMA analysis videos while working on a Flash Fiction loosely inspired by FMA. And y'all make me want to rewatch the 2003 adaptation and Brotherhood, because y'all have pointed out several things I missed. From themes and characterization in the 2003 adaptation, omitted plotlines from Brotherhood, etc.
And honestly I think that's entirely on me because I love both versions so much that I'm giving myself an excuse to binge both adaptations.

Well if Envy was only just little bit less of an unlikeable brick, maybe not transforming into the wife of his best friend while hammering home how easy it was to kill said friend while looking like that. Well, then i would have thought reeaaaaaaallly bad about Mustang. But int this perspective i understood: he was just pushed far beyond his breaking point. Yep, what he did was not at all even within the scope of okay. But in this context it was possible to accept it under: "he is just human".

Your compliment really makes my day! Video after next will be another character analysis. I have a them planned for next year as well. I plan on putting out far more videos next year and up to half of them will be character analyses. I made the Mustang video because i thought they would be popular. Nice to see i was correct.
I spent a lot of time on the script for this video. I really wanted it to be detailed and airtight, and it was about ideas i'd been mulling over for the previous year. I also write fiction in my spare time and forcing myself to think about how masters of fiction craft their characters really inspires me to be more ambitious with my own. I also wanted on honor a story that deeply affected me emotionally.
Thank you for the encouragement. I hope to see you around in the future. New video hopefully within a week.

    AN ARGUMENT.
we supported his coping mechanism like the cast.
had he succeeded and changed things (which i believe he would have) without that humiliation, it would be righteous to the end.
if anything, i believe that power is made because mustang's world IS his very influence on the world.
    "support network"
therefore his intensity/extremes is because his leadership, he goes too far because if he gives up... if he shows weakness
*his failed belief will slaughter not just Hughes; but everyone who followed his FAILED AMBITION.*

i really liked this video and agreed with a lot of its points, i just have some tips because you should have more subs for your analysis'. Put some footage of him (Roy) but without any audio from the show. It doesn't have to be footage of the show, if you're making a reference for an example, put in footage to show what you mean, and try and add some comical value into the video. If you think you're not funny, just do it. Some RUclipsrs aren't funny at all but still are successful. If you want to be on camera, try to not change positions so much. It's kinda bothersome (at least to me) how the audio level changes and how much your hand makes the same movement. For my last point, just get a new mic dude. Some stuff was kinda unclear. You do really hit the mark so I would recommend following these tips. I hope this helped, have a nice day.

    • @wyattthewordweaver1992
      @wyattthewordweaver1992  6 лет назад

Thank you for the support. These are really great points. These videos are by no means professionally made and my style of editing and video creation is still very much in development (I'm also not very good and still learning a lot of this stuff.) The subtitles point was a factor that bothered me a lot. Some of the clips could have definitely used them. I didn't change it because the video needed to be done so i could move on.
The performance in this video is bad. I spent hours watching it in the edit and i know. I took a bunch of notes to be more charismatic and less stiff (and reduce dumb hand gestures). I put that all into the next video which will be out in a week and hopefully it's an improvement. I also change positions less.
I want every blocking change in the frame to emphasize a new point kind of like a new paragraph. I really like my style appearing on camera (though i will try to improve it), and having bad audio quality is a downside of that. Once i get any money i assure you the Blue Yeti is going bye bye.
Thank you for taking the time to leave such a long comment. It's very heartwarming to see you engage with the content this critically. I hope the next few videos show an improvement. Have a great day.

your pacing at the start sucks, not gonna lie, the rest is mediocre(pacing obviously), facts are ok?, if you put this in a format, kind of like gigguk and mothers basement, with stuff distracting the kids, you would have a hit channel, also make it feel like your pacing it really fast, enjoy the creative criticism but for your sub count this is pretty good.
