Welcome to China. Actually, call Xinjiang Muslim Province, is not that accurate. Xinjiang has a long history with so many various blended in cultures, had been a pure Buddhist area. Because of the blocking by the Himalayas. The culture from west went into China through Xinjiang as the gateway. The Buddhist came into China also from the silk road, the first foothold is Xinjiang which called 'the west region' in the past. There are dozens of ethnics in Xinjiang with different religions.
For sure, it's certainly, historically a mix. We saw a lot of Buddhist history as we visited other cities and went to more museums. Make sure to stay tuned for our next videos!
It is not at all due to "high elevation".... Ürümqi is only at 800m. That's less than my home. I wanted to double check so I did look it up online to verify, as I said in the video, and it was related to the air quality, not fog or mist. But it did rain later and that helped a lot to take it out of the air so it got better.
Probs both? I don't know anything about the industry around Urumqi but I know for a fact coal is still used even for little things so there is definitely some decent air pollution but the geography will obviously also play a role. On some days my home town has a little smog layer over downtown because it's slightly lower than the surrounding areas and the pollution from cars. Just the way it is.
lol bro.. We have entire buildings (sometimes rows of buildings) in NJ that (look like brick and cement) are made with foam, mesh wires and stucco. It's not a uncommon thing.
To improve the air quality , China has planted over 66 billion trees as part of its Great Green Wall project, which is the world's largest afforestation project: The Great Green Wall. But ... 🤣 2022-7-20 BBC: China is destroying the desert environment by planting trees in the desert . 😂 I am too s____ to understand BBC logic. Also known as the Three-North Shelterbelt Forest Programme, this project began in 1978 and is expected to be completed in 2050. The project's goals include: Slowing desertification in northern China Increasing forest cover from 5% to 15% Stabilizing water resources Absorbing carbon dioxide Providing local people with resources like timber and fruit .
Nearly 90% of the year, air quality is fine even in big cities, winter has more low air quality days (365*88% is fine , 40 days from oct - April have low air quality), Urumqi used to be even worse)
Yeah, as I noted, Winter is always the worst for air quality. Same as anywhere in the world with air quality issues, something about the cold air keeps it close to the ground.
the air pollution is mainly caused by the desert. Xinjiang is closed to Talimu desert which is the biggest one in China, in the winter, the cold air in winter is from west-north, it passed through the desert. Actually there are 6 deserts in China. China put lots of efforts to build the green wall. there are 2 deserts (Maowusou desert and Kubuqi desert) already become oasis as they are close to the yellow river. but the rest 4 deserts are really tough. the desertification is the pain point for many countries. if you come to Xinjiang in Summer, the air is much better than winter. because the warm air is from east-south of ocean.
The air quality issue is most likely natural. If you are in the densily populated area in the eastern part of China like Shanghai or Beijing, air problem is likely to be caused by polution. But Xing Jiang has large uninhabited area, and is known to install hundreds of miles of solar and wind farms. The problem of air quality is most likely caused by sand storms. I don't think it is a fog, as that part is very dry and usually does not have fog, but that part is very likely to have sandstorm as it is close to some deserted areas.
It’s cloudy and later raining when they were filming, which added to that grey weather conditions. The air quality in some winter days in Urumqi is not ideal because there are indeed some air pollutions due to coal burning for heating. But like the rest of China, the air quality is continually improving.

I really recommend that friends who want to go to Xinjiang should go between June and August. That is the most beautiful season of the year. Fruits are plentiful and the scenery is beautiful. It’s really too cold to go to Xinjiang in November, unless you want to go skiing in Ili. Moreover, the climate is continental, with cold and dry winters. Unlike Europe, although the latitude is high, there is a warm Atlantic current, so it is not that cold. This is the center of Eurasia...
Best time visit Xinjiang is in the summer. All the fruit, all the Lamb and street food. Beautiful lake...Beautiful mountain. Winter time, central heating is bad for air quality, everyone is indoors, nothing to see, way too cold.
External wall insulation board,In order to reduce heat loss in houses in winter, this can reduce the energy consumption of heating and save more energy.
spring and autumn are the two best seasons to be in xinjiang. You might see more armed police than other regions in China as there was a terrorist attack before. Other than that it is similar to other cities in China.
Love your video! Very informative! A modern, peaceful ( somewhat empty) place with tons of home goods, restaurants, malls, showrooms. Not sure how locals make a living?

wish you a wonderful trip. As your question about the styrofoam,it’s a insulation layer between bearing wall and outer layer. It’s a standard building code for many northern cities of China.
We didn't actually get questioned by any police or military at all. We did just stay inside the city though. We did of course have the endless small security checkpoints before entering buildings or market street or museums but they are more security theatre than actually checking anyone. @@WanderingBluePassports, US has a lot to do with the security of Xinjiang. CIA involvement to break Tibet and Xinjiang away from China was rigorous. I am glad China has regained full control of these two autonomous provinces and maintaining a peaceful life hood. I visited these provinces in 2008 shortly after the Beijing Olympics and security was very dense in these two provinces and there check point everywhere. I had to apply for visas and hire a local guide to enter these regions.
@@kennedy6618 This happened because the request of the oil boss and White House officials was rejected by Beijing officials when they applied for permission to open an oil mine in Xinjiang, then the CIA played along, the US Army in Afghanistan trained many Uighur youths, then they were given weapons, bombs, then infiltrated back into Xinjiang to cause several riots, if this is successful, in the world there will be a small puppet state, and American oil companies can dig up oil mines in Xinjiang as they wish.

Yes, carry your passports everywhere in China. I heard that you just need to use your passport as your train tickets. Some places probably check your passports for security reasons.
That's weather not pollution. You never see bright sun in the sky mid-November. Urumqi is not that industrial comparing to other Chinese cities. 6:42 and few minutes later holding an umbrella you telling me that's not weather. 😆😆😆😂
How comes air quality in Urumqi being that low? Aren't the sales of EV in Urumqi as high as in the rest of CN, where air quality has massively increased due to EV rise and green energy? Also a lot of the green energy projects are in XJ, so that should shift things towards cleaner air, too, i would assume. Where does the bad air come from?
Others in the comments are saying lots still use coal to heat in the winter. We also saw lots of street vendors cooking with coal. We saw more EVs in China than any other country we have been to but there is still lots of IC cars too. It all just adds up, plus there is always industry but I don't know enough about that to make any meaningful statement in that regard.
Well there is a mall in the city where I live that they only sell home furniture and it is a 4 storey complex. There used to be a movie theatre there too but it is now closed because there are not so many people going there though it is my favourite cinema to go to.
I like your logic when document videos, would love to see you would adopt same logic to document America and its notorious for native ppl treatment as well.
Sorry, I don't understand. We didn't document any "notorious" treatment of anyone in this video? We just went to a museum and a movie and some parks.... Did you watch the video?
We were told on the media about allegations of genocide targeting minorities in Xinjiang. Could you help find evidence of real genocide or cultural genocide there, similar to the situation in Gaza?
How unfortunate that North American tourists tend to use Western perspectives to judge Eastern cultures. If you want to find faults to prove your biases you can and you will. It's easy to convince yourself that you've found evidence to prove your point, whether it's true or not. I too can judge others just by looking at them superficially without ever exploring their history in depth or trying to understand why they do things the way they do. That would take an open mind and too much time so why bother.
It’s unbelievable that China still has a place or two that has air pollution 😮!? Xing Jiang uses almost only clean energy… Chinese people are in general very friendly, people are used to helping each other since the old agricultural times, don’t care your skin colors (color doesn’t make one superior or inferior in their eyes) in China since ancient times there are already so many ethnicities (colors of skin) but all speak Madarin or dialects. Those who don’t like China, doesn’t matter either, don’t have to come to China… won’t be missed… China has 1.4 B people already. Love China❤👍. Yes, in the 'West' it happened a number of times. In Canada it's even worse maybe than the USA. We had state sponsored Catholic schools specifically designed for cultural genocide and erasure of first nations identity. Many persons were subjected to sexual abuse by catholic teachers and priests and hundreds if not thousands of young children were killed and hidden in mass graves. It's a horrifying and dark part of our history..... Our government was fucked and did such horrendous things that it should never be forgiven and needs to live with the legacy of horror it created. Is that a description enough for you? We Canadians are not afraid to be honest and critical of our government and our history. No need to hide or pretend the bad stuff didn't happen. That's the beauty of Canada and being Canadian.
@@WanderingBluePassports I don't think there is similar Genocide like Canadian Government done in Xinjiang modern time, but probably you won't believe it. @edmonyu2327 Absolutely, Canada has a lot of work to do around reconciliation. Even still many first nations do not have clean water. I am not afraid to say it. Lots still to do.
@@WanderingBluePassports It’s good to know that Canada acknowledges their mistake. However, when the West says that there’s ‘genocide’, why the Uyghur population has been continually increasing in reality? The West simply put what they did in the past onto China when China did none of them. It’s one of the strategies lead by the U.S. and followed by their allies to contain and hinder China’s development by causing disruption in Xinjiang. Such as spreading lies and rumors and funding separatist, which are done in an academic-government-media trinity approach. The more disruptions occur in Xinjiang, the more success they are in containing China. Another example of what the West did was smearing that there’s forced labor in Xinjiang. Taking the accusation of ‘forced labor in Xinjiang Cotton’ for instance, the U.S. ‘conveniently’ accused China of something what America did in its history again. While the truth is that 90% of cotton planting and picking in Xinjiang are mechanized. So I guess it’s forcing machines to work? Btw, cotton is a major industry in Xinjiang, the reason to defame it is pretty obvious, isn’t it?

I wanted to double check so I did look it up online to verify, as I said in the video, and it was related to the air quality, not fog or mist.
But it did rain later and that helped a lot to take it out of the air so it got better.
@@WanderingBluePassports I think the air quality is more due to it’s landscape and not so much due to industrial pollution.
Chinese food looks soooo good. Please tell me you are doing more "Following the Food Ranger" videos in China!
You bet ur butt we are.
lol bro.. We have entire buildings (sometimes rows of buildings) in NJ that (look like brick and cement) are made with foam, mesh wires and stucco. It's not a uncommon thing.
To improve the air quality , China has planted over 66 billion trees as part of its Great Green Wall project, which is the world's largest afforestation project:
The Great Green Wall.
The project's goals include:
Slowing desertification in northern China
Increasing forest cover from 5% to 15%
Stabilizing water resources
Absorbing carbon dioxide
Providing local people with resources like timber and fruit .
Pretty good actually compare it to the west lets say compare it in London or Paris
@@marklouieadame I just checked and right now Urumqi is at 172, London is at 78 and Paris is at 24 lol
@@WanderingBluePassportsIt may also be related to the burning of coal for heating in winter. Central heating is used in northern China.
Dehli is 1700.
No joke.
the air pollution is mainly caused by the desert.
并不是没有水汽,这几天冷空气来了,冷空气和温暖气体碰撞就会有雾,很正常的自然现象

from now to 2030, China's renewable energy installed capacity is expected to account for nearly 60% of the world's total installed capacity.

It's not prohibited. Anyone who wants to go can go. Xinjiang is not a restricted area
Exactly as we said. Very easy to come to.
Best time visit Xinjiang is in the summer. All the fruit, all the Lamb and street food. Beautiful lake...Beautiful mountain. Winter time, central heating is bad for air quality, everyone is indoors, nothing to see, way too cold.
I am sure it would be even more beautiful in summer but it still was very enjoyable to visit!
Thanks to CIA sponsored, East Turkmanistan Terrorist Groups.
Love your video! Very informative! A modern, peaceful ( somewhat empty) place with tons of home goods, restaurants, malls, showrooms. Not sure how locals make a living?
Thanks for sharing your video i always dream go to visit Xinjiang province one day i love to go down there it's so beautiful place to visit take care bye from milton Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
China is a wonderful place to visit and we highly recommend coming here. We have enjoyed it more and more each time we have come. (Stacey 3x, Tristan 2x)
China is different because we don’t listen to the west, we just did what we think is right
Not sure the Xinjiang ski resorts are already open? That would be another destination not a lot of foreigners visit.
Yes! The ski resorts in northern Xinjiang are already open!
That would be cool, this area of central Asia/around the 'stans' is said to have some of the best skiing in the world.
Its near desert sometimes is mild sandstorm, couple with mist or fog.
That's not smog, let alone pollution! It was cloudy! It will rain next! Xinjiang has no pollution! There are few people in the shopping mall because of working days, not holidays. The outer wall of the room is an insulation layer! Don't rub it in rhythm.
I like the buddhist music in the temple❤
It was playing while we were there so we recorded it to use!
Hope you guys enjoyed Urumqi, I just got here and it's pretty cold
Yeah, we did enjoy it but we haven't found anywhere in China we didn't enjoy yet haha.
The last time we came to China it was November/December and we didn't learn our lesson I guess lol
@@WanderingBluePassports you should go somewhere closer to the equator, YunNan province have some specular natural scene and HaiNan is a tropical island.
wish you a wonderful trip. As your question about the styrofoam,it’s a insulation layer between bearing wall and outer layer. It’s a standard building code for many northern cities of China.
Good to know, thanks!
We didn't actually get questioned by any police or military at all. We did just stay inside the city though.
We did of course have the endless small security checkpoints before entering buildings or market street or museums but they are more security theatre than actually checking anyone. It's just an x-ray conveyor that someone barely watches and then someone might wave a metal detector in your general direction 😂
@@WanderingBluePassportsBecause there have been many terrorist attacks by Muslims extremists in the past. Many Western cities have suffered similar attacks.
@@kennedy6618 This happened because the request of the oil boss and White House officials was rejected by Beijing officials when they applied for permission to open an oil mine in Xinjiang, then the CIA played along, the US Army in Afghanistan trained many Uighur youths, then they were given weapons, bombs, then infiltrated back into Xinjiang to cause several riots, if this is successful, in the world there will be a small puppet state, and American oil companies can dig up oil mines in Xinjiang as they wish.
the styrofoams are for insulation, similar to the use of foam to insulatr wallls in the US.

Hey! I wonder if you would come to Kashgar Prefecture recently? if you will, I can show you around the prefecture and Tashkurgan county
Darn!!! We just left Kashgar a few days ago. Our video will go up soon! We loved it!
@WanderingBluePassports haha, hope you love it here. Next time you need something or info about Xinjiang or China, feel free to let me know. I've travelled most provinces and big cities in China, especially for the food, and I just started my business as a tour leader.
Btw what's your next destination?
Did you check the official report on air quality, or did you assume it is related to bad air quality?
We checked, as we said in the video!
I like you, we just want ppl to see a real China, sure those saying shitty things good or bad about us only want to get more views, I believe the slient most are just want to see a true China as well.
China is just a country like others, just has a different developing way, our own way, not that perfect and not that bad, that's all,
Internet make any tiny good or bad way way bigger pppl start to stand a side to fight.
Thanks. We just like to document our travels, we don't care about views and we don't get our clicks from trying to polarize the world. It's already "Us vs Them" enough.
If something is good we say, if something is bad we say it. Some people are so sensitive to a negative being mentioned, even when it's surrounded by good things being said. I hope that like you, everyone can just enjoy watching us discover a new place.

Total agree with you said 👍.
Yes it's so true when talk about that country the true badthings which this channel will right away deleted your comment.

I just experienced it. My comment about why the West keeps saying certain things about Xinjiang was removed, no matter how many times I tried
every modern house in north west europe has styrofoam, it works.

I haven't seen anyone say it's closed to foreigners. But for anyone interested in seeing another side of Xinjiang, check out “China targets friendly media, diplomats to ‘tell story of Xinjiang’” or “'Eating suhoor in the dark': Ramadan for Uighurs, a month of struggle”, both from non-western media.

Yes, carry your passports everywhere in China. I heard that you just need to use your passport as your train tickets. Some places probably check your passports for security reasons.
Looking forwarding to your genuine thoughts about China. Meanwhile ………..
❤❤❤❤❤ interesting
Avoid traveling in the north of China in Winter, the smog is the worst in winter. The mall you visited is probabaly a furniture mall.

Thank you. Any day eating Chinese food is a good day.
Just the time of the weather as the same every where else on earth, why you don't go in May ,June, July, August.
Because we were traveling in Europe and turkey at that time... Making our way here.
These are paradise’s compare to crime filled cities in both USA and Europe 😮😮😮
How unfortunate that North American tourists tend to use Western perspectives to judge Eastern cultures. If you want to find faults to prove your biases you can and you will. It's easy to convince yourself that you've found evidence to prove your point, whether it's true or not. I too can judge others just by looking at them superficially without ever exploring their history in depth or trying to understand why they do things the way they do. That would take an open mind and too much time so why bother.

Wonder more foreigners are going China for travel now
It’s unbelievable that China still has a place or two that has air pollution 😮!? Xing Jiang uses almost only clean energy…
Chinese people are in general very friendly, people are used to helping each other since the old agricultural times, don’t care your skin colors (color doesn’t make one superior or inferior in their eyes) in China since ancient times there are already so many ethnicities (colors of skin) but all speak Madarin or dialects. Those who don’t like China, doesn’t matter either, don’t have to come to China… won’t be missed… China has 1.4 B people already. Love China❤👍. It’s still so much better than the West! 🤫
Westerners who see things they don’t have in their country and say “so weird!” You need to see more of the world and get out of your bubble😂

Free the Uyghurs of Xinjiang
No country prefects.
Factually true.
nice..
Chinese govt doing well.😊
if xinjiang is notorious how do you describe Us Canada and Australia where millions of indigenous people were killed.
I have uyghur friend, and I believe there is discrimination and opression for Uyghur at certain level, I think more similar with what happen with muslim/ethnic arab in US after 911 then genocide from anglo saxon in north american to indigenous people.
But if you like history, there are genocide, i think in 18th centry by Qing and Uyghur to dzungar peoples. Uyghurs killed probably 80% of dzungars and uyghurs become majority in xinjiang.
@@WanderingBluePassports how come I rarely hear westerner say I come to notorius BC or Ontario. Plus indigenous people is still poorly treated in Canada and US.
Btw, cotton is a major industry in Xinjiang, the reason to defame it is pretty obvious, isn’t it?
did white monkey is a well spread concept in western world? how many percentage average westerners know what white monkey means?
Not many know about the concept I don't think 😂
Sign me up though, I'll pose for a mattress company just because I'm foreign. Easy $$$ lol
@@WanderingBluePassports The problem is less white monkey job in china now compare before. Probably smaller city has more chances got job of monkey job. Monkey job also exist here in Indonesia, pretty sure also exist in japan probably 5 decades ago, probably never as rampant as China. Singapore use to pay white people more compare to other asian expat, but nowadays probably not different, with the same qualification.
