Shenzhen, a miracle that began in 1980
Forty years after its establishment as China's first special economic zone, Shenzhen has emerged as a symbol of the country's reform and opening-up. It has transformed from a fishing village to a sprawling industrial and financial megacity.
Widely dubbed as a "miracle," this coastal city next to Hong Kong not only boasts strong manufacturing capacity and leading innovation, it represents China's efforts in the past several decades to pursue development from scratch.
Before China started opening up its doors to foreign investment and transferring its planned economy toward a market economy starting 1978, Shenzhen was a small village with only 330,000 residents.
Guangdong Province is one of China's richest regions now, but back in 1978, with agriculture as main industry, Guangdong's GDP per capita was only 370 yuan (53.6 U.S. dollars at today's exchange rate), lower than the country's average 156 U.S. dollars in that year, according to data from the Shenzhen government and the World Bank. In the same year, the GDP per capita in Hong Kong was 3,924 U.S. dollars.
The early years of growth were not easy after the People's Republic of China was founded in 1949 from the ruins of the World War II and a civil war with Kuomintang. It stumbled through famine and an unsuccessful "Great Leap Forward," and then a decade of devastating Cultural Revolution (1966-76).
The country was mainly a planned economy similar to that of the Soviet Union. There was little business contact with the West. And the average living standard was far behind the developed world in the 1970s.
With the huge economic gap, many local inhabitants flooded to Hong Kong as illegal immigrants, to pursue better income. Official records show that about 150,000 Guangdong Province inhabitants left their hometown to Hong Kong before the reform and opening-up.
The city of “miracle”.
Fong’s story of rags to wealth, now threatened by a wider slowdown exacerbated by the coronavirus, reflects the history of his host city.
Established in 1979 during China’s first wave of economic reforms that allowed private enterprise to play a role in a state-controlled system, Shenzhen has evolved from a collection of agricultural villages into a major global port home to some of China’s leading technologies. , finance, real estate and manufacturing companies.
Over the past four decades, the city has seen economic growth of at least 20% per year. In October, the forecasting company, Oxford Economics, predicted that Shenzhen would become the fastest growing city in the world between 2020 and 2022.
But she has since lost that San Jose crown to Silicon Valley in California. Shenzhen recorded overall economic growth of just 2% in the first quarter of this year, the lowest figure for the city, except for the first quarter of 2020, when coronavirus infections brought the country to a standstill.
Shenzhen remains the largest exporter of goods in China, but its overseas shipments fell nearly 14% in March, preventing a COVID blockade that caused bottlenecks in its port.

In China, having freedom and rights to stuff like freedom of speech, freedom of expression, freedom of religion, freedom if assembly, freedom to criticize the government and also having the access to electricity, food, clean water, internet, and basic human rights is a privilege only for the wealthy as the average middle class citizen living in China do not have the access to any type of freedom or rights and any type of basic human rights I listed. As China lacks and has violated human rights multiple times. Also they’re forbidden to say anything negative about the government or else they’re punished by the CCP, as the CCP is very strict and has a strict censorship policy. As the Chinese citizens aren’t allowed to watch international and foreign internet networks or apps because of the CCP heavy censorship in the country, as citizens get punished by using a VPN, as the CCP government controls everything and anything their citizens have and do. As Chinese citizens have no freedom as the CCP controls everything in the country.

Impressive and well planned infrastructure. Literally, China has transformed poor rural areas to modern cities in the last 40 years. Applaud to the people and the government for the hard work.
just some of the cities in China,there are a lot of areas still poor in the west of the country,and we paid a lot actually,environment pollution and hard work of the chinese people.it is not east for a country to finish the industrialization in 30 years and the west spent maybe 200 years if you counted from the first industrial revolution

When I moved to Shenzhen 2000 it had 4 million people. It's crazy how fast it's grown. If I could handle the hot weather, I think I'd move there permanently. Great food, nice people ... I really miss it.
From a small outskirt extremely poor fisherman village has now turned into modern advanced wealthy highly populated well order megacity in the world, in just 40 years.

I liked how the words at the beginning bracketed the towers. That was a nice touch. Beautiful drone footage as always. China has so many amazing places to visit it would take a month of Sundays just to scratch the surface of its many areas worthy of visit. The night drone footage was especially dramatic. For a modern city, Shenzhen has the complete package. No other metropolis can match its combination of high population growth, innovation, high tech industries, financial might, green spaces, infrastructure, shopping, entertainment and safety. This is how utopia looks, like a huge botanical garden. As quickly as the city has progressed into a world class destination, it is not done with its metamorphosis. Alex needs to redo this video every 5 years as this incredible video will look vintage. Great job!
It does not belong to utopia, people living in this city, the pressure is great, the work intensity is very high, and prosperity is created by everyone's hard work with both hands.

I worked in Shenzhen in 1080. It was just a rural primitive village only 1restaurant-Chun Yuen. All the youths only wear blue and green. I had never thought of that one day this sandy n muddy area will become so modernise and run even faster than Hong kong but, only can carry on is to leave the both cities remain as open as they needed.
A never seen city in the entire world. To me, it comes second to Hong Kong. Shenzen is gorgeous. All hail Shenzen. Thanks for a well-taken video of the Miracle City.

I really like the video! I was born and raised in Shenzhen, and saw many scenes I'm familiar with in the video haha. Shenzhen is definitely a top first-tier city in China, and everything is rapidly progressing here. As I student, I really feel that I'm heavily pressured by people around me in school because everyone is studying really hard and aiming for top universities in the world ahhh. On one hand, I feel lucky that I am studying in such an energetic city, and having a platform for me to connect myself to the world in the future (I'm probably going to the US when I graduate from high school). On the other hand, I feel really burdened here everyday in my studies and have high expectations from my parents, so I'm have a lot of mental breakdowns sometimes :( ) But you reap what you sow, I guess that's the basic principle, so...fighting! And thanks for ur video! :D
