I loved the way Mirelurks used their shells, their sense of preservation gave them a unique personality.
The animator did a good job of making them super difficult to hit in any meaningful area.
Out of everything, the Deathclaw is my favorite of your creations.
hooray, thanks so much Nate!
Hey Jonah, big respect to you and the work you have done. I grew up in post-soviet Georgia where no one has ever heard of careers such as character artist, concept artist, 3d artist, etc. but growing up I played a lot of games (especially Skyrim) which made me want to get into making such experiences/multimedia art myself. Specifically, your amazing 3d work and concept art of Adam Adamowicz made me want to get into this as a full-time career. Games you've worked on have changed the course of my life and now I am starting to make a stable living off of concept art and 3d sculpting, thank you for that.
Hope your artistic journey will lead you wherever you want it to lead, you deserve it.
That is beautiful to hear, thank you so much for sharing this with me! What a completely different way to grow up, and what a shock it must’ve been to realize maybe, just maybe, you could pursue a job in this world! I remember the first time that I read the making of Jurassic Park book… It was the first time I realized that maybe I could work in art and fantasy for a living too…
Fantastic work and loved this behind-the-scenes look! I wish you'd show the fat super-mutant you mentioned at the beginning. It's so interesting to see the creatures that DIDN'T make it into the final game. I love the idea of the Maypole
Thank you Kainga! One day I'll do some videos about it or something, or at least post about it somehow. Thanks for commenting and following!
Super cool stream, Jonah! Great visuals, cool stories and insights, and pleasant delivery. Only crit: sometimes you left the mouse cursor hovering over a model and it drove me bonkers.
Great work!
… and don’t judge your ability to enjoy VR by your first impressions. As someone who started off with brutal motion-sickness, I know what it’s like, I know that it can be overcome, and I know that it’s well worth it.
I suspect that you will enjoy what’s possible just in terms of sculpting in VR…
Hahah my bad, I can see how that might drive you nuts haha
Thank you, man! You are behind the design of so many of the creatures I've been slaying for so long that I feel I owe you years of fun.
Also, you are so right about the player home time sink. I used to reverse pickpocket all the npcs in Tenpenny Tower to dress them up as my guards and drop clutter around the place to make it my own.
Now years later, I spend every hour I have of free time building settlements, populating them and turning them into videos on this channel. One having a Screenrant article fully dedicated to it. The height of my artistic career ahaha
And hey, if you ever have 30 seconds free to just have a quick overall look at the thumbnails. I would be honored, sir!
I love these videos of yours man! Thanks for makin them, and for keeping the dream alive.
@@JonahLobeDraws Thank you! You just motivated me to up my game, buddy. I have about twenty new ones half built, will be sure to make 'em stand out
I can't believe I just found to the channel of the legend who created the creatures of Fallout 4 and Skyrim.
Your work is awesome and incomparable!
(Did you design the Zetan/Alien in Fallout 4 as well? I love it's design.)
What's up Shadow! I did not make the Aliens from 4, but I did make the Aliens from 3. And thanks for the kind words homie! I appreciate the comment and the follow.
@@JonahLobeDraws Always thought F3 nailed the Alien art design. Do you know where the voices come from?
I'll always be sad about the Mirelurk King animations...
You and me both Human!!
We need the Maypole in Fallout 5. And a Mirelurk Kong. "Breaks the game" can't be a constant.
I'm hoping someone can mod it in some day...
Awesome! Thanks for this, some very insightful comments.
Always! Glad you liked it Wyvern.
Even a dev is tired of the Brotherhood of Steel
I just think there are many more interesting factions that have been unexplored.
This is so badass to get a real inside view, thanks for sharing :)
My pleasure, glad you enjoyed it!
cool stuff Jonah :D I'm making creatures for my job, and am always seeing details in your own work that I could have added, but missed and regret not adding lol
That's so cool Zetheros, where do you work? And no worries - these little details get layered on as we layer on experience over the years... I look back at my F3 stuff and I wanted to redo it alllll
@@JonahLobeDraws I work remotely on a game called 'Exanima'!

@@zetheros8627 Oh so cool Zeth!
Really interesting to know the reasoning behind your character designs 😍 it's genius
Thank you so much! I've been thinking of doing a video dedicated to just - just my reasoning behind all the character designs.
@@JonahLobeDraws ill definitely be looking forward to watching that
at 1;29:56, that giant ghoul looks great but i think the concept behind it killed it for the game, if it was juste a 3 meters high special ghoul for some special quest or even just a rare occurence that would have made it, i love the actual concept behind it but as you said it would mean a lot of work around it to make it into the actual world, i love giacometti aswel and i think the look is spot on :)
Thanks Gabriel! Yeah the concept was too big - in many ways - but I did think that it would make for a really awesome image on the front of the game. And it would offer a promise of something different from a Fallout game!
@@JonahLobeDraws well hopefully there will be more fallout games from bethesda in the future :)
What was the reason behind remaking the Mirelurk King? The Lagoon Creature was a classic design, and personally I feel the newer one lacks gravitas.
They wanted a diff aesthetic, but to me the gravitas was lost because the animator chose to make it hop, which was not at all what I intended!
Yes. Fallout 3 definitely has one of the best trailers of all time. If not the best.
It's just beyond, in terms of atmosphere and storytelling...
@@JonahLobeDraws Fallout 3 is my favourite in terms of atmosphere. Did you work on Point Lookout or The Pitt?
@@AlchemistOfNirnroot I actually did not! I was moved on to Skyrim right after Fallout 3, ahead of most of the team.
Oh wow, that's interesting, I thought they would hate the modding community, but it's great to know they love it
One of my old work friends named their daughter Azura because it was her favourite daedric goddess lol
That is incredible. It's a great name!
Oh wow that's how I felt about the witcher as well, it was a game that felt familiar to skyrim had swords and combat, had everything I should have liked, but didn't and didn't want to play it any further
Yeah I'm not sure why, it just didn't "stick" with me.
1:16:17 omg lol
I dont understand how it became normal and legal to sell games on steam that dont work without moding them first,i love fallout 3 and new vegas, but i think its reasonable to ask bethesda for just simple remaster, that said i dont believe it will hapen which is sad.
Wahhahahhhhhh - Jonah Lobe 2020
I approve!
2:08:01 i have that same picture of david bowie hung up on my wall
Wait, seriously? Like, that exact painting or the refence image? Because I made that painting.
@@JonahLobeDraws the reference picture my bad haha, you should put up a print of that for sale!
A ruined Europe, always wanted that
