I own a 2005 U500. Can't say that I've ever had it in that kind of gunch, but it is unbelievable in rough terrain. It articulates in a seemingly impossible fashion. Moves in and out of gullies with aplomb..... All whilst carrying 12,000 pounds of grain. Totally amazing machines!

Wow, best standart 4x4 so far.
I tought it was a boring video until the mud comes... Everybody should remember it has a tow hidraulic arm over it...

The managers did not even believe the Unimog got out of the mud. Show me a video of an H1 driving in thick mud over the height of its tires and pushing it with the headlights and I'll reconsider my ignorance. But there is no comparison between the two vehicles in this particular situation.

I have to say that when I was sitting in it, I knew everyone was wondering who was going to put the tow strap on. But it was everything the Unimog and I could do to get it out. Without the single ag tires, the low pressure, the portal axles lockers, mechanical drive and low gears, it was not happenning. I am possitive that other than another high power Unimog with a similar set up, there are very few wheeled vehicles that could have driven out of there.

The Michelin XM47 High Speed tires that are on the demo are a factory option a fully FMVSS compliant vehicle and are DOT approved. They are rated for max speed 90km/h at 3450kg load per tire. They come in sizes from 405/70R20 to 495/70R24 Look at the michelinag website for details. The tires int he back are 445/65R22.5 Michlin XZL (WB) and they are also DOT approved for 5600kg per tire at max of 97km/h

We did, but only because we borrowed the other tires from a customer for the demo. I know many people that run the XM47 and they are fantastic tires and at speed do not seem any noisier than the XZL

@GregSheridan I appreciate both the video and the advice. I must admit that I've sent many people here to watch your video. It's an excellent way to demonstrate what my U-500 was built to handle. If you had the time, I'd appreciate any advice or knowledge you cared to pass along! I'll send you an e-mail with my contact information. Thank you, again!

Any old S404 completely rules any Hummer H1 or Humvee out there. Dad has a Humvee and I have a cheap S404 and his Humvee always gets stuck in mud, or high-centered, because it has too little clearance. My S404 is cheap insurance to make progress and good use of the day when we pull firewood down the mountain.

Hummer owner would never admit what you just said because they have paid 8 times what you paid for your unimog ! Unimog rules all the way !

Are you serious with your comments? To give you an idea of how this machine compares to an H1, it has a full 16 inches of clearance with the tires at low pressure not a ground clearance that lowers with the independant suspention on a H1. It weighs 22,000 lbs and has true dog clutch locking diffs so no slip between the wheels. The tires are 49 inches tall not 37 like on a H1. It has 800lb-ft of torque at 1200rpm and in 5th gear working range the mud was sucking all the power.

@bengo76 In Canada, all you need is a regular driver's license. I don't know about other countries.

plz note the mounted tires are not dot approved. i am sure the ones in the bed are

That's a reduction of 75:1. With a direct drive transmission not an automatic with a torque converter that pould have overheating during the demo if It were an H1. I can assure you that the equipment staff from the three largest oilsands mines in Canada were onsite to watch and have seen their share of H1's and beside being completely impractical and totally uncomfortable for their operators, they all fell apart from the rigors of the mines.

I have to disagree with you a little a hummer is not junk .The hummers are impressive with what they can do even though anyone with a single brain cell knows a hummer is not a Mog. These are the best trucks at what they do in the world. I agree that the hummer can't do what a mog can but you can't completely dismiss them either. oh by the way i meant for you to smile when you read this. No spite or malice was ever inteneded good luck
