She set the tone at the beginning by reminding the belligerent child of the rules, that she would not tolerate obnoxious behavior.

If he was more eloquent and intelligent, I believe he could have tried to make the argument that different regions have different costs of living and perhaps try to argue against the need to raise minimum wages federally, but leave it to each state to decide for themselves.

Kristen Welker she made them answer her questions no skating on race like Wallace did. He was a pitiful moderator.
A moderator isn't supposed to be confrontational, they're supposed to ask a question and then let the person use their time to respond however they wish. It's been like that for ages. Chris Wallace was the better moderator, he just got dealt a bad hand. Kristen Welker was a better interviewer, which is not a moderator.

A moderator in a debate asks questions to guide discussion and then plays a background role while the debaters, you know, debate each other. That's the point of a debate, it is not an event where a third party chimes in with unsolicited advice. Nobody tunes into a debate to see what the moderator has to say. Unless they're brain dead, I guess.

She wasn't a badass, she was a good moderator. She fascilitated healthy discussion and didn't interject and also questionned each candidate fairly.
This is also my worry. A moderator doing her/his job well is somehow seen as outstanding and amazing. Really shows just how bad the debates have gotten over the years that when someone does it right it’s Amazing and everyone loses their minds

I see your point, however I think Kristen had the right level of assertiveness in this debate that neither Chris or the second debate moderator could offer, mic cut option or not.

Truth. Perhaps he could have been more assertive, and would likely have been more so if he was given few more tools like cutting of the mic. I would love for this to be a standard in almost all debates (even in the Senate + Congress).

i think she won because the two candidates had learned their lesson from the first debate. They knew they can't interrupt each other or the mic would be cut off. She would have found the job a lot harder had she been the moderator of the first debate.

@@GeomancerFelix Someone on the production team. A lot of people don't realize or aren't remembering that their is a predetermined format for the debates. A question is asked then a 2min response. After the first debate the mic muting was added to stop candidates from talking out of turn.
wow it's shocking that the last woman moderator was more than 30 years ago, you would think that just by pure chance that would have happened more often.

@@aditikrishnamurthy2445 The video actually said "in nearly 30 year" which actually means it was a little bit less then 30, I thought it said in over 30 years, but regardless, it doesn't really matter if it was 30, 28 or 33 years ago, that is still way too long for the third largest population group in the US to have had 2 women moderate.

@@Arjay404 Black people constitute about 13% of the American population, I'm guessing roughly half of that are women, so about 6-7% of the American population. If we assume in the last 30 years, there were 3 debates per election, one election every 4 years (I'm just estimating here, haven't gone back and looked at everything), it would amount to 7.5 elections, multiplied by 3 for 22.5 debates. Assuming there were also 22.5 moderators, 2 black women divided by 22.5 gives 0.088, or 8.8%. Does it still seem very shocking?
