They are by far the most dangerous. And as we saw what each of them was capable of individually, it is extremely disappointing we never saw Pope in action.
I always found this scene really funny cause in the previous episode Maggie said they could take on the reapers cause she’s got Meridian’s best fighters. Then they all proceed to get wiped, granted it was an ambush but the fact that only one of Meridian’s fighters survived after the mission is super funny to me.
Agreed! And if I had to choose any of the main characters in this scene to die, I would pick Gabriel. Daryl, Maggie, and Negan are too important (and popular) to get killed off, plus we wouldn't get their separate spin-off shows if they did. And Alden, while the least important of the main characters here, deserved more screen time and development and ought to have died fighting in the final battle against the Reapers at Meridian, instead of getting killed by a Reaper off-screen after the final battle. Alden could have been killed by either Carver or even Pope, and he could die protecting Maggie or even Negan of all people. Now while I love Gabriel as much as anyone else, him dying in this arc (specifically during the first attack by the Reapers) would have been a fitting end to his character arc, and as you said, it would have added a lot more intensity to the main group's situation. Plus the main group would have lost another valuable and badass ally and it would establish just how formidable and strong the Reapers are. It is either that scenario, or the other way around: Alden dies here and Gabriel dies during the last battle against the Reapers, preferably by Pope (which would be even more of a fitting fate for Gabriel: a priest versus a pope! LOL). And that way, Pope would be viewed as a pretty cool and effective villain for managing to kill one of the most badass and well-developed heroes in this show. And then Pope should have been killed by either Maggie (his apparent arch enemy) or Negan (which would be even better because he could save Maggie just before Pope kills her). I'm cool with either of those scenarios tbh.
@fer2627 Alden wasn't a main character, though. We needed a main death in this moment to make it more impactful than what it was. Gabriel should've been the main death tbh. A stab right through the middle of his neck instead of that slight cut against his cheek. That was just silly tbh.
While the lighting of this scene was kind of...odd, and felt like there was an actual spotlight in the woods, this scene is still SO FUCKING COOL!! Actual main characters getting brutally injured, brutal deaths, the introduction of the badass and terrifying reapers (until later on down the road, they revealed too much about them, and they became just another group), and the theme of the reapers was also so good and scary. I love this scene so much!!

I just wished that they spent more time on the reapers. I felt they were the best faction they fought in terms of pure skill but they barely had any screen time. It would have been cool to see the reapers against the group just after terminus happened. Just after Ricks group faught terminus I felt they were the strongest not because they had the best weapons but because they were absolute savages at that point.
This was the most epic scene!! I love it! I remember watching it for the first time and seeing the guys hand getting cut off and then this group! Ahhhh I love the walking dead!

Seriously, the only reason the main characters survived against the Reapers throughout their whole arc was because of ridiculous plot armor and lazy writing. The writers really should have had at least a few of our main characters get killed by the Reapers, both during their introduction here and during their last battle later on, as a way to establish just how powerful and formidable a threat they are to the heroes, making the heroes realize that they are facing a group who are even more combat proficient, deadly and organized than them and stand nearly no chance against their new enemy. For the most part, this show really doesn't have the balls to kill off or at least seriously injure any of the main characters anymore, even when it's the final season, which is usually when we get LOTS of main character deaths (Game of Thrones for example). It also would have been better if the Reapers lasted much longer so they could be fully fleshed out as a group, but we get to know them at a very gradual pace instead of revealing too much about them so early in the story. Also, have them keep on their masks most of the time and keep them mysterious until much later on in the story after they are slowly developed and reveal their backstories as ex-military and mercenaries (so they can still be seen as terrifying and interesting antagonists with their own personalities and backstories, rather than boring and forgettable grunts), and if they were connected to the Commonwealth arc: they could have been a spec ops/black ops division of the Commonwealth, sent out to wipe out small, or even large, communities who refuse to join the Commonwealth. Furthermore, the Reapers, a group of highly skilled and deadly military veterans, should not be able to be taken out by a smaller and less skilled group of survivors (a farmer's daughter, a gym teacher, and a priest?!). Daryl and Elijah, I can understand given their own impressive skills in combat that can rival the Reapers, but only one or two Reapers at a time, whereas any more than that is (almost) certain death for Daryl and Elijah. The Reapers' demise was so unceremonious and anticlimactic. It would have been much better and realistic for them to be defeated by a very large group or at least a handful of people with similar combat abilities to them (or a bit of both). Also, their leader, Pope, not only should have been given much better characterization and a much bigger role than he had, but also should have been played by somebody else because Ritchie Coster just didn't do anything for me or most other fans, and in my opinion, either Alexander Skarsgard, Sebastian Roche, or Henry Rollins ought to have played Pope, since all of those actors would have made a very convincing and truly frightening leader of the Reapers. Additionally, Elijah (Maggie's right-hand man) could have been made as a former member of the Reapers, which would make a lot of sense due to his great fighting skills, his weapons, and of course, his mask. Why the writers never thought of any of these ideas is beyond me?! My guess is they used the Covid excuse to rush the Reapers story arc and then focus on the Commonwealth story arc, when they honestly could have tied both stories together... but no, apparently that requires too much brainpower and budget, which is a pretty lame excuse. This show seriously needs way more skilled and talented writers and directors! 😒
Watching clips like this just proves that this show got worst. Shear silliness. Question; At night, where would the light to see really be coming from? Having stationary lighting surely ruins the idea of an ambush. With everyone wearing "bad-ass" black clothing taken from Hot Topic how could anyone really see anything. Stupidity of this magnitude has made this show a joke since the beginning.
the light is for the audience, the characters don't see sh... its just that when a tv show portrays dark realistically, they get thousands, thousands of complaints that it is too dark to see anything, like in that GoT episode. and it ruins the purpose. so its just a movie/drama effect to highlight whats going on with Maggie in that scene. I'd rather question how they each go from carrying 2 AK47s with endless ammo against the saviours to wearing nothing here...

I agree with you. The first half of season 11 was very nice, the complete opposite of seasons 9 and 10. But the second half was very bad.
