we are not going to adapt - climate change is a symptom of overshoot - a critical one absolutely , but just one of many boundries we are pushing through- renewable energy is the techno optimist promise to continue business as ususal - Tainter in his work talks about how no society has ever choosen to reduce complexity - we are going to collapse - and the way emissions will come down will be from economic armegedon from the combination of rising costs to our way of life- and as Mann would agree, climate change will present most forcefully as food and water insecurity first for millions, then hundreds of millions , then billions ....

Just with basic knowledge of engineering, economics and world consumable logistics. I hear Michael and other professional intellectuals say "we need to reduce and introduce policies" At no point do I see or hear any logistical solution. If they dare dive into the process of clean energy, it's also based on mining, first step transportation, refining, second step transportation, manufacturing, third step trans. Installing or activation. maintaining, servicing and deposal. Fossil fuels got us here and is linked to so many jobs and prosperity. Not including food distribution. Many people have said we can introduce clean energy to all these steps. It's not just cost viability.

Name one irreversible feedback loop that humans caused. Tipping points are so far out there, it's unlikely we'll ever conclusively identify them. This one time, there were continental sized super volcanoes that made huge basalt floods that erupted for thousands of years. The climate was sure impacted, but it eventually recovered. There was a mass extinction. We see a little increase in trace gasses like CO2 and methane, and you think THAT'S going to do anything? It's probably why today is such a beautiful day.

Warming has already exceeded 1.5 deg C. It is actually closer to 2.0 deg C. This is because the IPCC moved the goal posts or baseline date from which global average temperatures are calculated. The time for a "climate war" was 20 years ago. As it is, multiple tipping points have already been breached. Freshwater is quickly disappearing, forests are spontaneously combusting, crops are being destroyed, and wet bulb conditions and drought are manifesting everywhere in the world. Everyone believes that we have until 2100 or 2050 to act. This is entirely false and is based upon the scientist's prior deeply flawed models. People think a slow transition to green energy is the way forward. Wrong again. There is no time for a transition. Climate change is now abrupt, exponential, and irreversible. We will be lucky if civilization is still functioning by 2030.

I agree largely, but would add that we really don’t know how quickly things will deteriorate. There are so many feedback loops that are all interrelated. There are many areas on which studies contradict each other. In other words, there are too many known unknowns, unknown unknowns, and interdependencies among the many relevant variables in the hypercomplex system called planet earth that we can only really guesstimate as to what’s gonna happen.

@@Kektamusprime David, the other commenter, can speak for himself, but I'm more concerned about your comment. Take that initial part as a compliment, but I still think your understanding is flawed as well. What you need to realize is that scientists generally consider their role as being to describe, not prescribe. So Michael Mann can give you a reasonable estimate of what will happen to the climate system if emissions continue with "business as usual." The trouble is that BAU is simply nonsense. I keep hearing about those BAU scenarios, where the rest of the fossil fuels are burned-at an increasing rate FFFS!-through 2100, and it continually grinds my gears. There is NO plausible scenario where that is going to happen. I can predict confidently that CO2 emissions will trend downward from here on, whatever is decided in climate negotiations in Paris or wherever. Gov't policy, and business decisions, can affect the details, but the train has really already left the station. We are going to renewables, and electrifying transportation, and changing numerous other things, because it economically makes sense. So yes, I think the climate scientists are mostly right, but no, we're not buggered. At least, not for that reason. Maybe Putin and Biden will push the Big Red Buttons, and we'll be buggered that way. But hey, at least we won't have increasing CO2 emissions.

Evolution or extinction? Are we able to learn to live in harmony with each other, nature and technology including AI? Sustainability not profitability. Mindfulness and self love, respect not exploitation. Our species faces a major die off, the population is passing the peak, passing a tipping point where our population goes from exponential growth to a transition to a new sustainable relationship with the ecosystem that has sustained us up until now. That downward curve can be as steep as a cliff which falls to zero, extinction, or it can begin steeply and recover as it returns to historic levels of sustainability, pre-technology levels such as pre-Columbian America. This could lead to a selection pressure that would produce a new species of hominid, speciation. The curve could be more gentle and could include technological solutions that would level off at a population that could both live more harmoniously with nature and each other and incorporate technology that would represent an evolution into a new species of technologically enhanced humanity, cyborgs. Taking life to other planets, terraforming and evolving new species of humans who could survive other planetary ecologies is another path that will require technologies including genetic engineering to reach for the stars. Managing these changes in a moral and humane way brings hope to a future that appears very scary from our selfish and ethnocentric perspectives. Keep up the good work or as John Perkins says "Dream True" instead of living like the hero of his book "Confessions of an Economic Hitman." Be blessed, you are a blessing. Aboriginal cultures have much to teach us.

That event will result in a dramatic rise in Arctic sea temperature and melting/sublimating of seafloor methane clathrates and tundra. And, that will seal our fate. The IPCC does not take this into account in their summary reports. Granted, in a recent survey, less than 1% of people want to know when they are goig to die. So. According to prof. It’s very clear how much work needs to be done to reach net zero in terms of CO2’s and methane emissions to avoid catastrophic weather related events. Yet, wonder if corporations and global citizens are willing to make the changes required to live sustainably? Our lives in industrialized nations are so dependent on conveniences of disposal goods and products made with plastics and chemicals produced in mass quantities, which bring jobs to the world economy, that is seems improbable to unravel a consumer driven economy that is so deeply embedded in fossil fuels. There needs to be a big reset in industrial nations to globally market a new sustainable lifestyle where we act as if everything we produce and consume has an impact and cost to this life on earth. Propaganda to shop until we drop and buy to make life easy and pleasurable will be hard to change and this is wrapped into the use of fossil fuels. If fossil fuel industries stop, how does the global economy retool all the productions of goods produced that are made from fossil fuels? Even medical equipment and products are made from plastics?

lce Ages were modulated by ice-sheet aIbedo, not by CO2.
CO2 is not the primary control knob - as I have demonstrated in my peer-review paper. In reality, the feedback agent modulating ice ages was actually ice-sheet dust-albedo. See: Modulation of lce Ages via Dust and AIbedo.
The first problem with ice ages is:
When CO2 concentrations were high the world cooled, and when CO2 was low the world warmed. This counter-intuitive temperature response strongly suggests that CO2 is not the primary feedback agent.
The second problem with ice ages is:
Ice ages are forced by increased Milankovitch insolation in the Northern Hemisphere (NH), but never by increased insolation in the Southern Hemisphere. If CO2 were the primary feedback agent interglacials could and would be forced by increased insolation in either hemisphere, but they are not. The fact that interglacials are only ever NH events, strongly suggests that surface albedo is the primary feedback agent (the great landmasses being in the NH), rather than CO2.
The third problem with ice ages is:
During an ice age, many NH Milankovitch maxima produce little or temperature response. Again, this would be unlikely if CO2 was the primary feedback agent, but it is to be expected if surface albedo was the primary feedback. High albedo ice sheets covered in fresh snow can and will reject the increased insolation from a NH Milankovitch maximum, resulting in little or no temperature response.
Unless, of course, the ice sheets are somehow covered in dust, thus reducing their albedo. Fortuitously, the northern ice sheets do indeed get covered in dust just before each and every interglacial. This is the topic of my ice age modulation paper - the counter-intuitive method of dust production, and its function as the primary feedback agent controlling interglacial warming.
The fourth problem with ice ages is:
The CO2 is a very weak feedback agent indeed. During an interglacial warming era, the CO2 feedback requires warming from decade to decade, to feedback-force temperatures into the next (warmer) decade. Unfortunately the CO2 feedback is only 0.007 W/m2 per decade, which is less energy than a bee requires to fly.
Conversely, reduced albedo ice sheets can absorb an extra 200 W/m2 every single annual year, when measured regionally. Clearly the albedo feedback is far stronger than the proposed CO2 feedback, and could indeed dissipate the vast northern ice sheets in about 6,000 years.
All of the above points strongly suggest that ice sheet albedo is the primary feedback agent modulating interglacials, rather than CO2. …. Increased dust is caused by low CO2 concentrations, because CO2 is plant-food, and the most essential gas in the atmosphere. Thus low CO2concentrations cause the death of all C3 vegetation at high altitude, causing CO2 deserts to form across the Gobi plateau. Dust from these CO2 deserts formed the huge dust deposits of the Loess Plateau, and also covered the northern ice sheets in dust - which lowered the albedo of the ice sheets and precipitated melting.
See: Modulation of lce Ages via Dust and AIbedo.

Do you deny current atmospheric concentrations of CO2 are over 30% higher than they were about 150 years ago at the dawn of the industrial revolution and in the same time span the average global temperature on Earth has increased by about 0.8° Celsius (1.4° Fahrenheit) since 1880. Two-thirds of the warming has occurred since 1975, at a rate of roughly 0.15-0.20°C per decade, roughly ten times faster than the average rate of ice-age-recovery warming?

The world is truly fortunate to have Michael Mann speak out about the realities of the climate emergency. He has brought strong science to the political debate that has been so frustratingly slow. Thank heaven for Dr Mann and others like Bill McKibbin and Al Gore for speaking out against the greedy fossil fuel lobby and the inactivists.

What year was it that Al Gore predicted "The Arctic will be ice free in the summer seven years from now" ? A venial man who has made a fortune trading in the carbon market, this market is somewhat similar to the craze for black tulips that enveloped the normally reasonably sane Dutch in the 15th Century it was based on nothing of any value to anyone. When will people wake up and realize that there is no such thing as a 'carbon footprint'. All of human activity - traffic, farming, manufacturing, breathing, is responsible for only 3% of the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and carbon dioxide is only 0.04% of the Earth's atmosphere - so we are talking about 3% of 0.04%. There is no climate emergency, it is a myth invented by Mann and he has done very well out of his invention.

How do you silence a climate change alarmist? Ask them this question: What is the proper amount of atmospheric CO2. Most have no answer. If they give you a number ask them how that number was proven to be scientifically correct.
First it was air pollution, then it was global warming, now it’s climate change. In the ’70’s air pollution was going to blot out the sun and put us into an ice age and mass starvation. We were also going to run out of oil. Many claims were made by the (well funded) “experts” that never happened.
Then the (well funded) “expert” climate watchdogs transitioned into frightening claims about global warming. They ignored climate history showing warmer global temperatures before the industrial age showing no human cause and effect to temperatures but never the less tried to convince us with their inaccurate computer predictions.
Now we have (well funded) “experts” telling us the weather system is broken and using the term “climate change” to prove it. What did climate do before it changed?
Here’s the problem as I see it. Humanity has been subjected to over fifty years of (well funded) “expert” claims that didn’t happen. Have any of those spewing lies ever been held accountable? No. They continue on (well funded) unabated.
Here’s where I think this whole scene needs to go. Funding stops until claims are specifically defined, measured and verified, the climate change alarmists must describe exactly what is wrong with the climate, how they know that, can prove it with verifiable testing (isn’t that how real science works?) before humanity is deprived of the many benefits of fossil fuel just because they say so.
Have they said what the proper amount of atmospheric CO2 should be? No. How will they prove the number they decide on will fix climate change? How will anyone know when climate change has been fixed?
There seems to be no scientific method at work here only assumptions, emotional warnings and ultimatums. Could billions of dollars in grant money prompt someone to say something they don’t really believe and can’t prove?
Folks there are too many unanswered questions to take any of this seriously.
Anybody remember Biosphere? It was a 200 million dollar, self contained and self sustaining, tightly controlled, environment for 8 people designed by “experts” and was a colossal failure after only 2 years.
Do you really believe “experts” can fix Earth’s weather system? What could possibly go wrong?

Have you read the Intergovernmental panel of climate change reports? Produced by hundreds of scientists representing every country in the world and including a summary to policy makers on how to mitigate and adapt to climate change.
Virtually every scientist in the world unanimously agree that mankind’s fossil fuel exploitation is contributing to the massive increase in carbon emissions in the atmosphere.
The answers are all out there. We know how to solve this however it requires a massive societal change. If we love our children we will make that change to ensure the best possible future for them.

      @anthonymorris5084 2 года назад

@@jeffrichied4521 The loss of plant and animal species is the most disingenuous argument of them all. Humans have been annihilating the animal kingdom for 500 years. This die off is solely caused by poaching, over fishing and plant and animal habitat destruction due to human encroachment.
In the 1800's 100,000 tigers roamed the wild. Today there are around 3,500. Not a single tiger perished because of climate change. The entire Eastern cod fisheries was shut down due to over fishing. Humans slaughtered 75 million sharks last year alone. I doubt a single shark has ever died from climate change. Even polar bears are thriving. The climate isn't killing anything. Rhinos, elephants, mountain gorillas, panthers, snakes, and on and on all threatened solely because of poaching and human encroachment. Some of it due to human conflict.
In fact, every single plant and animal species across the entire northern hemisphere is experiencing growing habitat due to a warming planet. They are all migrating north away from population centers in the south. Grizzly bears can now be found thriving at higher altitudes and further north. It's the first time in history their habitat has actually expanded. All thanks to a warming planet.
You simply see a problem and blindly push the narrative and blame everything on climate change. It's incredibly irresponsible.
