Today we look at why Jack Horner actually plays an integral role in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and completes the movie. (And you thought he was just there to be funny smh)

Jack and Perrito actually parallel each other in a lot of ways as well which is something that I don't see people mention often
Perrito is that statick guy who has a dark backstory but is happy with himself while Jack is the statick guy with the good backstory who just wants more and more and more
Perrito aids the characters to grow (Mainly Puss , Kitty and even Goldy) while Jack's there as an antagonistic force who tries to mess with the characters.
Thank you for the analysis
Nice observation, and glad you enjoyed the video!
Also in appearance, Perrito is a little dog, while Jack is a huge guy.
Wait so Jack wont stop biggering? and that biggering is triggering more biggering?
EXACTLY!!!
My thoughts exactly.
What's hilarious? The cricket is named as Ethical Bug
In Collodi’s book, the Talking Cricket doesn’t have a name
In LA Spanish his name is "Bichonesto", which is a portmanteau between "Bicho", which means "Bug" and "Honesto", which means "Honest".
@@matityaloran9157because he doesn't last long
@@Army_Dog Actually he does. Pinocchio accidentally kills the Talking Cricket early on but after Pinocchio’s encounter with the Fairy with the Azure Hair, the same Talking Cricket shows up inexplicably alive and he remains throughout the rest of the book
@@LiatKolink Has he a different name again in Castilian?
Jack Horner made me laugh the hardest I’ve ever laughed in a movie theater. I had to muffle my mouth with my coat when he revealed what his wish was to the ethical bug. The look of pure shock on his face will always make me laugh.
Side note: I think another reason Jack Horner works so well and why everyone loves him is because he’s a real, proper “villain”. No sad backstory, no misunderstandings, none of that. He’s bad and he knows/enjoys it. It’s been quite a while since we’ve gotten a character like that in animated movies. Jack represents a nice return to form by just being evil for the sake of it.
Honestly, yeah. Not every story needs a complete psycho villain, but they pulled it off here wonderfully. I'd say Jack Horner became one of my favorite villains right along with Porky from Mother 3.
I initially didn't like Jack Horner. But the more I watch the movie (last time was my 8th!) the more I see how he fits in purrfectly to the whole thing. And your review highlights this. Thanks!
He's not meant to be likeable.
I was reading The Anatomy of Story today, and it talked about exactly this. Starting your hero and villain off with essentially the same problem, but different ways of handling it, shows your audience different ways to handle that problem themselves, but their arcs and eventual outcomes narrow those approaches down to ones that work.
K. M. Weiland, author of Creating Character Arcs (which I'm looking forward to reading) spoke on her YT channel about "flat arc" characters. Characters who either understand the thematic truth already and make the lives of everyone around them better because of it, or stick so rigidly to the opposite, to their flaw, that they make everything around them worse. She calls them "positive flat" and "negative flat," much like "positive change" and "negative change" exist. Jack Horner fits into "negative flat" quite cleanly, though most good negative flats make things worse for the main characters in pretty big, often shocking or permanent ways. (Good examples are the Joker in Dark Knight, or like, any anime villain. Frieza and Doflamingo are my go-to examples.) Jack didn't really do that, and that may be why he didn't feel quite as powerful as Death or Goldi. Not that Jack wasn't great at what he did though, and if he did too much, it might affect the pacing, plot or even the tone of the movie too much.
THE PIE MAN !
Jack was the best villain aside form goldi and the bears
Goldi wasn't so much of a villain, but rather more of an antagonist or an anti-hero. I was expecting the bears to betray her during the movie, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out I was wrong and they did actually love her in spite of her not appreciating them as a family.
Is just the fact he transformed the pumpkin into a mad max machination.
Jack is literally the Disney version of the Joker and I love it. The suit. The insanity and the fact that despite not having much screentime, you'll still remember him.
Jack is literally the first thing I think of when I think of Puss in Boots.
Recently found your channel. I've enjoyed your other videos about Puss in Boots so I wanted to leave a comment here on your newest video.
When I saw the movie, I didn't actually like this particular villain, Jack Horner. I don't like this type of villain in most fiction; I found him over the top. But I think his role makes sense in the context of the other antagonists in the movie.
Goldilocks and the 3 bears are rivals competing for the same goal (the wish) but they aren't bad and Goldilocks has a genuine desire for a family, too. The death wolf is there to instigate the arc for Puss: to help Puss realize the value of life and to cherish his life.
Thus, Jack Horner as the pure remorseless, evil, unapologetic villain fits much better. He's not redeemable (unlike Goldilocks). He's not there to spur Puss to be a better character (like the wolf). He's there to highlight how awful a selfish person can be without valuing what the main characters care about. It serves as part of the great message: value your life, value the people around you, and don't take anything for granted.
Exactly what I think about Jack’s role in the film. Thanks for leaving this comment detailing your thoughts and glad you enjoy my content!

Great to hear from you! ^__^
Unlike many others, who probably started with your Death/wolf videos, I was actually recommended your Perrito video first. I have a question for you about that subject, since I've often thought about that similar topic myself re: annoying sidekick and comic relief tropes. I agreed with your analysis about having likable qualities, more depth than simple comic relief, and fitting the tone in question to not feel out of place within said plot.
As I've re-watched Disney movies as I got older, I've often found myself disliking characters like genie from Aladdin and Mushu from Mulan, both of whom I loved as a kid. I think as an adult, it's because while both are likable and aren't pure comic relief, I don't think either really fits the tone of their respective movies: the Persian/Arabian/Indian setting of Aladdin and the ancient Chinese setting of Mulan. Both genie and Mushu make way too many anachronistic references to modern culture that also didn't fit Aladdin or Mulan, for that matter.
My question to you is: do you feel the same when rewatching Disney animations and thinking that some of the funniest characters as a kid often don't fit the movie when you watch again as an adult?
Hmm, I’ll have to rewatch those movies, but even from what I’m vaguely remembering about them, I think I would have to agree with you about the tonal inconsistency of those characters (which is something Perrito doesn’t do thankfully lol)
Jack should be Shrek’s own version of Trump.
Character study on Kitty Softpaws? Maybe involve the first movie. I really like your takes!
It would be good a video about Goldie
Unpopular opinion, but Big Jack Horner is actually my favorite villain in the movie (if you couldn't tell from my profile lol). Death is awesome, but I really like how just... evil Jack is. There's no complex backstory, you don't feel bad for him, he's just evil and it works amazingly. Sure, Death is getting everyone's attention, but without Jack, there'd be no movie due to how integral he is to kickstarting the plot. Also, I really like his suit, so I can relate to Baby Bear talking about how he wants a "purpler" version of Jack's suit.
Hey GhostToast. Good vid...really nice!
Yo, thanks for the love Cut Culture
Let’s help our boy ghost toast get to 50K!
Maybe you could next do a video talking about why the Governor of Del Mar is such a great antagonist??? 👀
Bruh that would be such a good joke video 🤣
I am sorry man but i don't think You can save yourself from puss in boots, only keep moving with the pace of the movies and keep trying your Best
On the bright side, your content is quite Nice
I hate Jack Horner😂
Who was your favorite villain from the movie? Mines was the Wolf by far
Yeah, mine is definitely the wolf
Mine was the wolf who is your favorite hero😼
This is chill
I think he's the perfect representation of the worst of all the other characters Goldilocks and Puss for not valuing what they already had and wanting more Jack is what they could have become if they didn't learn thier lessons .
No love and respect for his loving natural parents and no gratitude for what he already had and it was never going to be good enough for him. If he had not been so greedy and selfish all the time, maybe he would have been grateful for the life he had.
Jack Horner is really really different than Death himself, they are polar opposite from the beginning
Jack was great, but Death is still the GOAT
True
@@ghosttoast824 I am making analysis-based videos on my channel Hobbit’s Hole if you’re interested in taking a look as well. Shameless promotion ensuing 😂
So in short, pure evils are the only static characters that work.
Jerry no.
Huh? 🤨
"Help me. Jack!"
I find it astounding that I have more subs than you, but unsurprisingly, you have far better content.
Haha, RUclips be like that sometimes. Sure it kinda sucks, but I believe in myself to get bigger eventually. Thanks for the compliment, and let’s hope I do make it as a content creator someday!
