  • A somewhat controversial topic among Metroid fans is Metroid Other M, and its portrayal of Samus having a form of PTSD. In this video we discuss how she's always had it, and how it makes her a better, stronger, more interesting character. Though, she could still do without the voice acting.

I actually suffer from PTSD. The Combat PTSD I gained from my wartime experiences has been dealt with to the point that it no longer impacts my life, but like Samus I had some pretty bad traumatic experiences as a child.
I've been working on those for DECADES, and even now, with the VA paying for psychological help for me, it's still an uphill battle every single day. Pure stubborn can work to get you through the dark times, but there's a reason I actually enjoyed Other M. Bad voice acting aside, Samus' portrayl as a PTSD sufferer was spot on. Yes, this is how it ACTUALLY happens. People grab onto anything that seems safe and familiar during Episodes, and what Samus grabbed onto was her former commander, General Malkovich.
So for those saying "No, she shouldn't have been so subby during the game and why'd she keep her badass stuff off until he said so" You missed the point. If I was back on duty and a sergeant told me not to fire, that order would superseed even my own survival instincts and I would not fire, because in the trauma of stressful situations like that, you latch onto ANYTHING that can keep your sanity from fragmenting even further.
Thanks Lockstin. You did this one good.

Let's add to the mixture that Samus had multiple father figures in her life...all dead...and Adam was her ultimate father figure.

The Catman and friends He wasn't mentioned very much at all, but there was the Chozo elder called Old Bird if I remember correct and he was probably was on the same level as Adam. Plus little known the reason the Chozo are gone was not because of war, famine, disease or even the Space Pirates wiping them out.
As your are probably aware, any life can only stay fertile to have children for so long. That being said, if I recall, their thirst for knowledge and creating technology was so insatiable that breeding was not in their priorites and it decimated their numbers over time.

Man in the Black Hat Not really trying to insult you or your actual ptsd problem but I'm afraid you're the one who missed the point of why people had a problem with that ptsd scene. It was not only unbelievable but also used as a bad plot device. When looking back at Other M, people don't really argue over the actual portrayal of that ptsd scene but rather the fact that Samus herself was not portrayed properly having it. Having the ptsd is fine but the fact of the matter is that the story expects us to believe that Samus has not only had these intense experineces before in previous adventures(as its my understanding that ptsd happens anytime, anywhere as many like to point out profusely when defending this game) but also the fact that its entirely acceptable for them to use such a very real condition as an excuse for such poor writing. Samus having ptsd is one thing but Other M was one of the latest games in the Metroid timeline and we have not seen her suffer through such trauma in any of her past missions which *should've* triggered her condition in some way or form to give the players a decent idea of something being wrong with her(because there have been moments that show Samus often reflecting on certain situations that genrally show that she has some feelings left in her). I won't deny that the scene where she was having ptsd was most definitely spot on to the real thing and how it works but when you combine that with everything we already know about her, its entirely nonsensical to a point where simply having ptsd does not excuse her character's behavior. If anything, moments of when she possibly had ptsd in previous games shows her getting more angry than frightened as we can see that Ridley is(should be) the main trigger for it and everytime she fights him she gets a lot more violent when trying to finish him off.
Also, her relationship with Adam would be passable if Adam himself wasn't an incompetent leader. So much so that even Samus has no reason to continue following his orders regardless of the respect she has for him or amy ptsd that at this point she would at least be able to cope with somewhat after her largely traumatic and insane life. It weakens her character indefinitely because its Adam's actions that lead to people dying, something Samus was trying to prevent. Acting as a solider under his command instead of a bounty hunter taking charge of *her* mission led to more problems that no amount of respect is worth and abusing ptsd to make this happen was unacceptable to even the most understanding of critics to this game. I'm no solider and I'm sorry if this greatly offends you but orders that unnecessarily put lives at risk have no justification to be followed, especially when Samus is the only one who can defy those orders without any real repercussions a soldier would have for disobeying orders. I mean, yeah, she would be held responsible if her actions got someone killed but its not rhat hard to believe that Samus is very adept at handling the kind of situation Adam and gis crew were in and therefore any reasoble person would be asking Samus for assistance in a matter she's clearly experinced in, not telling her to follow orders over some very poor reasoning.
I know this comment is old and I know I sound like a brat with no knowledge of this sort of thing but there's a point where common sense tends to supersede these types of topics and when dealing with fictional subjects, its all the more reasonable to say when there's a line between realism and absurdity. Other M crossed that line very early on and didn't deserve that ptsd scene, which could've been a very well done way of defining Samus's character, but instead was squandered entirely for a game that did not know how to write its own story

Well, look at it through this lens. Super Metroid had her destory Ridley for what she thought was for good. Thus, when he came back... it was a massive hit. I mean, just imagine you were tormented by a monster or demon since your early childhood.
You then spent your whole life to fight against it, each battle ending in a stalemate as they escape. Frustration and anger would build and yet, when you finally beat the monster, it's done. You see its corpse destroyed and you feel control over your life.
Now imagine it returning from the dead.
After you thought they were finally dead and seen with your own eyes, you see the monster come back. All the hard work into destorying it was meangingless. Then, it strikes you. Not just the shock, not just the fear, but despair. Despair that you will never win. That not even dead, which is supposed to be permanent, will keep the monster down. All of your loved ones are dead and never coming back... yet the monster that has haunted you somehow does...

Cesar Pena I wish the perspective that you share here was more widely seen and understood, because IMO it is the most valid rebuttal of Other M's PTSD apologists.
Writing and game design aside, just from a chronological, canonical standpoint the whole PTSD thing is indefensible. If Other M had maybe been a metroid 1 or 3 remake, it might be justifiable, but not with Other M being Samus' penultimate adventure chronologically.
Her having a PTSD episode at this point, which has never been depicted or hinted at in previous games (aside from the entertaining eisegesis that Gnoggin is known for), and against an enemy she has defeated so many time she could do it while asleep... That makes about as much sense as Solid Snake having a panic attack when he realizes he will be fighting Liquid or Ocelot or (!!!) another metal gear of some sort. Or it would be like Mario freezing when he realizes he has to fight Bowser again. Or a Belmont freaking out every time they have to fight a vampire.
There is simply no support for it other than what has been retroactively applied by Other M, especially not when it comes to Ridley. Samus has freaking fought the Queen metroid twice, dealt with phazon and its mutations 3 times, and even fought her doppelgänger. And she is supposed to be scared of a space dragon whose ass she kicked so hard he literally had to be rebuilt on multiple occasions?

Just one little detail I thought I'd correct: Samus wasn't the one to blow up Zebes. It was Mother Brain that rigged the planet to be destroyed should Samus defeat her.
    Minor nitpick aside, good video.
Also, at the end of the Meta Ridley fight in Prime 3, we see Samus literally shove her cannon down Ridley's throat and fire a bunch of times. That's not the sign of someone behaving rationally in that situation.

Remember, nintendo shoves the Prime timeline into "none canon" to make Other M have a stronger connection.
What they don't know is that it's bull and shows how much of a failure Other M is that they need to do this.(even without the prime games Other M hardly makes sense in the time line)

My problem with Samus's characterization in Other: M wasn't her PTSD, but with the severe hero decay she suffered when faced with Adam. The surrogate father figure thing I can understand, but it was overly dramatic and reduced Samus to a whiny teenager whenever he was in the room. What really disappointed me was that we could have had a deeper character in Samus, but were instead (mis)treated with a reimagining of her.

I think in Other M, she was in a much more emotionally vulnerable state in general. Bear in mind that her reasoning, aside from chasing Ridley, for returning to Zebes in Super Metroid was to save the Baby Metroid. Not only did she have a level of maternal concern, but she had also thus far had a flawless track record with accomplishing every objective of a mission laid out in front of her.
And then the baby Metroid died. Not only did it die, but it died to save her life. That was her primary objective for this mission, and something she genuinely wanted to rescue. And now it literally exploded above her head and was raining down on her.
She failed that mission. The game says "mission accomplished", but I don't think it was. I'm fairly certain that she saw that mission as a failure, and suffered from a crisis of confidence.
Enter Adam. The one person in the Galactic Federation she still has respect for as an authority figure. She figured he could take the lead. Even though it may risk her life, she trusts his judgement more than her own.
Adam... kinda plays with that. I think early on, he caught onto her lack of judgement and decided to push her buttons. He deliberately made stupid choices, all to get her to start questioning him and wanting to do things her own way again. And I think it works wonderfully. After the Ridley fight, Adam's communication with her is gone. She's on her own again, and proceeds using her own judgement, letting herself use what she needs right when she needs it. Only when she's faced with a baby Metroid does she pause. Adam gives her one last push, and while she mourns the loss of someone she cares for a great deal, she comes out of it as her true self.
Granted, their storytelling could have been a lot better, and they could have had a lot more interaction given the long silences as you go from place to place. It's by no means perfect, but I can see what they were getting at.
And I'm pretty sure in the next game, chronologically speaking, she'll be a more complete person.

Chaos89P Interesting fact : the trigger in the game is actualy way more than needed for the first breakdown. I've lived many years with someone surviving PTSD. My mother actualy lived correctly for most of her live until I turned 15. She was 36 then. I actualy caused her breakdown without knowing it. When I came home from school one day, I said "Mom, what do we have for supper today? I'd really like to have chicken, it's been a long time." Turn out chicken was her aggresor's favorite food and it caused her emotional breakdown. It had nothing to do with what happenned to her, it only had the smallest link to her trauma, it still caused the breakdown. Now, coming face-to-face to the source of your trauma who should actualy be dead since you killed it yourself... That's actualy a strong link, don't you think?

It's not about the PTSD. I like the manga and it's portrayal of Samus. Other M's execution of this idea was just terrible. You can show fear and trauma without literally replacing a character with their child form as they cower.
There are also a lot of plot/lore questions that the game begs:
Why the hell could Adam 1-shot her with a sidearm? Why the hell is she wearing heels when she is a warrior? Why is she so exceptionally obedient that she won't activate personal protective equipment (Varia Suit) when necessary? Where did the dry sarcasm from Fusion go? Why was she being so petty about Adam's sacrifice of his brother to save the lives of thousands when, even back then, she was a warrior who had seen hard times and made hard choices? Why did they contradict the Prime Trilogy with Samus's "first" joint operation since she left when she worked directly with a squad of troops in Prime 3? Why can't she make decisions herself?
When she notices something is wrong, she can talk directly to Adam and ask for permission. She follows orders without objection and rarely ever shows any sign of self-reliance; people argue that Other M made her a more "human" character, but she is acting more like a robot than ever! Other M's characterization of Samus was poorly executed and spat in the face of Samus's previously established character in favor of an emotional, yet monotone, and obedient robot. THAT is why the Metroid community shunned the game (decanonizing the Prime Trilogy was also a big mistake).
Other M aside, my opinion on this video is that you are reading too much into older games that we don't know the authorial intentions of. Nothing suggests Super Metroid's Ridley fight was any angrier than the previous ones. Fusion might have been a story of PTSD, but nothing solid enough to definitively support that theory. You used heavy and debatable conjecture to support your arguments and not objective facts about the franchise. This video obviously took a lot of effort to produce, but it was founded on theories rooted in conjecture and unsupported if this conjecture is questioned.

Part of why I can't accept Other M as canon is that a lot of its plot makes no sense in context of Fusion. Why would she be surprised the Federation is breeding metroids in Fusion when she found out about the program in Other M? Why is the Nightmare there when it was experimental in Fusion?

  • @sambeckettcat
    @sambeckettcat 7 лет назад +32

my issue with Other M wasn't the PTSD, but instead how she just blindly obeyed Adam even when it didn't make sense. He told her to deactivate her abilities because they could be a risk to the team or the equipment, but things like her Varia Suit don't make sense in that regard as it's just a protective shield, and yet she still happily risks her life running through a high temp area potentially cooking her alive because he precious Adam didn't give her the ok to turn on her Varia suit. It would've been a ton better if they either stuck with the usual "accident that inexplicably makes her lose her abilities so she must regain them" thing or have at least one moment where she activates an ability without Adam's ok, has a fight with him showing she's her own person and won't put up with his bullshit.

But you can't say that a game was bad and had bad storytelling, and then take this bad storytelling at face value all the time. I'm pretty sure the Varia Suit thing everyone gets worked up about was just lazy writing and was never meant to characterize Samus in any way.

    • @sambeckettcat
      @sambeckettcat 7 лет назад +3

TheSorrel the fact that it characterizes Samus negatively is WHY it was bad story telling. Whether it was intended that way or not, the end result is the same and it still makes Samus appear dangerously subservient to Adam.

    • @Nyzer_
      @Nyzer_ 7 лет назад +4

TheSorrel, I really don't know what you're trying to get at here. The fuckery with the Varia Suit SUPPORTS the idea of Other M being just bad storytelling. If that situation was written so lazily that it didn't occur to the writer that Samus might not be retarded enough to throw herself into a potentially lethal situation when she can mitigate that with a couple clicks on her HUD, the odds are the same lazy writing is why she suddenly has a case of PTSD out of nowhere that magically goes away for Fusion, instead of it... actually being intended that she had it all along but just never exhibited symptoms because reasons.
The supposed PTSD is bad writing in and of itself because it directly contradicts the events of: Zero Mission, Prime, Prime 3 (twice), Super Metroid (twice), and Fusion (up to twice). Not counting the general death and destruction she comes across during M2, Prime 2, and Hunters, plus the non-Ridley encounters of all the previous games, which would also risk triggering her despite not involving Ridley.

    • @TallFry2
      @TallFry2 7 лет назад +1

You see, I think she was in the middle of a crisis of confidence, and then Adam caught onto that. Then he made deliberately idiotic decisions to get her to question the orders and try to make her own judgements. Could have been portrayed better, but that's the message I got.

I was almost happy about seeing a dissection of Samus's actual character. Buuut...
That thing about anger in Super Metroid is mostly conjecture. There's not much in the game that could lead someone to the conclusion that Samus was *particularly* angry in these fights above others. While it could be read that her utter destruction of him could hint that, I'm willing to bet that Ridley wasn't dead yet, but it was the explosion that finished him off "for good". After all, the same had happened in Zero Mission, but the Space Pirates had an opportunity to put him back together. Plus, Samus didn't blow up the planet; It was more likely tied to Mother Brain's death.
Furthermore, while the Other M segment is mostly rock solid (except for the MB line, as she just kinda considered MB a threat), it's worth noting that the death of the baby, serving under Adam again, and almost thinking Anthony was the deleter likely put her moreso on edge, on top of realising Ridley just wouldn't die, which tipped her over.

Sure, for the players who know the Metroid manga, they would understand why she'll hesitate against her arch-nemesis (who she has absolutely CURBSTOMPED repeatedly in the series beforehand). But in Other M, none of her backstory and her trauma is addressed and we just get Samus randomly freaking out.

Just want to point out the Ridley part of Other M was only one piece of the puzzle that made everyone hate it. Samus wasn't just a wuss when it came to Ridley but when it came... everything. Meekly following the absolute retarded orders of the worst Space Federation squad leader ever, getting cornered and needing help from creatures so far below what she had already faced, and of course being one shot in the back after finding the Metroids... I mean seriously? ONE SHOT?! She can fall down in lover, get crushed and assaulted by giant monstrosities, get infected with a parasite and have to have extensive surgery just to have it removed, get hit with giant lasers blasts bigger than her entire body... but one pistol shot to the back and she out? Seriously its like they weren't even trying.

I'm watching this post-Dread and yeah, it makes sense. Samus seems a lot more confident, pulling off some Doomguy-level finishers on the bosses of the game, as well as seeming more relaxed at times, such as her idle animation, where she fully lowers her arm cannon and stands with her shoulders pulled back (which doesn't happen within EMMI zones with an active EMMI in them, so you know she is actually aware of when she can or cannot loosen up). She also basically dismisses Kraid once she finds him, even though he is one of her recurring enemies from the space pirates. Raven Beak seems to be the only one who provokes an emotional response in her and even then, she furiously lashes out at him in their final battle instead of running away or freezing in place

Honestly, this is probably one of my favourite theories from your channel or even otherwise. As someone who suffers from PTSD, from different reason than Samus, it’s honestly very hard some days. It’s refreshing to see someone with PTSD be represented in media in a POSITIVE way. When I say I have PTSD some people have in fact said that I shouldn’t because I “wasn’t in war”. But anyway enough about that. It’s nice to see you actually delve into what ptsd is and how Samus actually conquered it. I would have never really noticed this if you didn’t point it out. It kind of gives me someone to look up to, even if it is just a fictional character. I often now find myself asking how Samus would react and deal with the situation. It may seem stupid and honestly it is. But the fact that she can deal with her PTSD and finally crush it is very freeing. It makes me realize that I CAN in fact defeat my own Ridley. Even if it resurfaces that I CAN in fact come back from it and be stronger. Thank you, Lockstin, seriously. I know that you probably won’t see this but that’s totally okay. I like to come back to this video in Times that I’m struggling. It remind me that even the strongest people can break down and it’s okay to not be okay. Okay my nonsense is over. Sorry that was so long. But thank you again Lockstin, seriously.

4:00 every time she fought Ridley chronologically before Super Metroid Ridley escaped or disappeared." Metroid: Ridley blows up presumably into ashes, Metroid Prime 3 Corruption: Ridley explodes into a million phazon particle effects. By that logic, Ridley "disappeared" in Super Metroid as well by blowing up. Sure, the world blows up in super, but How does that effect anything, you can't disintegrate something that's already disintegrated.

A little thought to add on to the theory.
Near the end of the fight against the SA-X in Fusion, it transforms into a more monsterous creature that only has superficial details of the Samus form it had before, like it was realising that what it currently had wasn't _enough_
That could be symbolic of Samus proving herself over her demons, to the point where they have to shift away from her and still fail.

Uhh... Samus only indirectly destroyed Zebes... Mother Brain's death caused what ever destroyed the planet to do just that. I think she has only purposely destroyed two planets, the Metroid homeworld as a means of ridding the universe of the X virus and Phase to rid the universe of Phazon. Dark Aether was technically indirectly destroyed due to draining the Light of Aether from it and bringing it back to Light Aether. Which, doing that would destroy one or the other.

This is the second time a theory of your has brought me to tears. I have had PTSD for as long as I can remember, and it has always controlled me. I grew up in a very violent and abusive home, and have had to watch a person I cared about nearly die. I have been through and seen what feels like everything, and it has made my life hell, and a waking nightmare as I can never be sure when my memories will come back to haunt me. I have to be extra careful so as not to trigger those memories, and as you said, it's very difficult to do. I don't know about others, but for me it's nearly impossible. It has caused me great and constant pain, and was a vast majority of why I was suicidal in my early teens. I have made more than 20 attempts on my life because of my past, I let it get to me, and I paid the price. Another part of PTSD is blaming yourself for things that were out of your control.
Another thing you mentioned is that PTSD can give you a thirst for vengeance, and that especially rings true in my case. I wanted to kill my father for the things he did. I wanted him to suffer like I did, to feel my pain. And I thought that when he died my pain would be gone, but it's still here. I still have to live with the things I've seen, and in some cases the things I've done. PTSD is a tiger, and you're its prey. You never know when it will strike, and when it does it's hell. It's the kind of thing you have to lie in wait for, and it comes as soon as you let your guard down. Sorry this was so long, I just wanted to say thank you, but instead I ended up saying far more. It's videos like these that help me overcome my problems and make me less hollow. I hope you keep up the good work. You're helping lots of people to overcome their issues.

Holy butts, this is the exact logic I've been using for the reaction since this game came out! I can't believe I'm only JUST finding this video and seeing someone else (and with more clout at that) arguing the same/similar points and it just feels nice. My version was Samus essentially being prepared for the fight against Ridley by the time it comes around. She knew he was going to be on Zebes in ZM, she encountered him on the Frigate in MP1, she saw him fly overhead and attack a distant portion of the facility on Norion during the Space Pirate assault in MP3, she encountered him on Ceres Space Colony and couldn't take him down in SM, and in Fusion she saw his lifeless, cryogenically preserved husk crumble as a core X parasite left it. Essentially, she was at least somewhat ready to encounter Ridley in most of their battle encounters.
Holes in the argument being the Omega Ridley battle but it could be implied she was ready for him because she was on the Space Pirate Homeworld and Proteus Ridley in Return of Samus... I guess her drive to defend *the baby* Metroid helped her with that.
And of course, it was mentioned in the video she saw Ridley explode into nothing after their battle and DOUBLE NOTHING when Zebes exploded. In EVERY other situation (barring Zero Mission where he blows up when defeated so it's technically ambiguous though the effect could just be a stand-in for his body falling to the ground) Ridley is never seen to die. He falls off a cliff, down a generator shaft, overloads with phazon energy and discharges a huge wave of it while Samus shields her eyes and Ridley is off screen (he likely flees), and he just lays unconscious at the end of RoS. Samus knows he'll be back. It even happens in Other M until the Queen Metroid gets to his clone while he's weak.

You make some good points, however I don't think people take issue with the idea of PTSD itself, more so the way in which it was executed in Other M's story, it felt like a very shoehorned plot device, that was thrown together with about as much nuance and subtlety as the majority of that game's story, personally it never felt very well developed or fleshed out, and was merely a plot device used to give "artificial" depth to Samus' character...

  • @zackhollings9017

I'm all for Samus having PTSD; I agree with 100% of what you said about it making her a stronger character. The manga did it well, I'll give them that, but Other M did it so, so wrong. Mind you, I've only actually watched the cutscenes from Other M because I didn't want to play it, but their portrayal of Samus' PTSD came across as whiny and insecure with little to no growth from beginning to end. Basically, what I'm saying is that Other M isn't a bad game because of its controls or plot; it's bad because of its horrid portrayal of the awesome Bounty Hunter we've all come to know and love.
Sorry; I know that this video wasn't actually all about Other M, but the whole PTSD part reminded me of why I didn't like it.

THIS! THIS VIDEO! THIS IS WHAT I KEEP SAYING! Ridley was DEAD! GONE! Samus had KILLED the monster that had haunted her for so many years! It was OVER! And yet in Other M, Ridley was revived! • @MrGamernova
      @MrGamernova 7 лет назад +4

However the problem is OUR relationship with Samus & Ridley. Maybe that fight meant all that to her, but to us... it was just Tuesday. The reason it worked well in the Manga was because that's all it was, a Manga, but in the video games Ridley was just another boss to us & nothing more. Yeah if he comically teleported right behind me I'd S**t myself, but I'd also do that if Bowser or Gannon did the same thing, he doesn't mean nearly as much to me or any of the other players as much as Samus does & thanks to that we end up desyncing with Samus & get out of the game.
Push pass it- heck Luigi FREAKING LUIGI pushes past his fears so much better in the Luigis Mansion games then Samus did in other M. & it works there because Boos are hard to fight, you don't blow them up with missiles every time you see them like with Ridley, sometimes you can't even kill them & you just have to run away to win, so Luigi earns the players empathy since they're a much bigger threat to us then Ridley is.

Ugh, I can't believe there are still people with these opinions.
      (A) What reason did Samus have to believe she *hadn't* killed him for good the first time? He's come back several times at this point. It does not work without further (SPECIFIC) explanation. Not acceptable.
      (B) *She DOESN'T push past it!!!!* she whimpers, cowers, and lets her friend get swept into the lava. To top it all off, there's *never* a rematch, and she gets no chance to redeem her failure.
Utter garbage. How can people still be defending this?

    • @Nyzer_
      @Nyzer_ 7 лет назад +4

The biggest problem there is that she's faced off with Ridley on multiple occasions in the past without this ever happening. This is the only moment of PTSD she ever seems to face over the entire course of the series. I won't claim to be an expert, but I don't think it's exactly commonplace for someone suffering from PTSD to dedicate their life to remaining on a battlefield and only ever once having it triggered despite facing the original cause on half a dozen other occasions. If Other M occurred in a vacuum, then, yes, it would be a realistic portrayal. If Other M took place before Zero Mission, and was her first encounter with "Ridley" as an armed, armored adult, it would be a realistic portrayal. But this is just adding in a brand new aspect to her personality, out of nowhere, that completely clashes with every other canon appearance she's made.
This reaction is what should have happened the FIRST time she faced off with Ridley since childhood. Not just exclusively the seventh time out of eight (or nine, if you include watching the X-drained corpse turn to dust) for no particular reason.
And let's not even get into the fact that the rest of the game also serves to derail her established personality. Or that even the parts not dedicated to her... ahem, "character development" are also dumb. I mean, the game couldn't even be bothered to finish the plot with the Deleter, the man dumb enough to attack Samus Goddamn Aran with a FORKLIFT.
That's like trying to argue that because Twilight manages to do a few things right that it's well written. Great, Other M accurately portrays what Samus would be like with PTSD and a crippling lack of self-confidence! Too bad she doesn't actually have either of those...

PTSD isn't something you can get rid of, as Gnoggin stated. I'm fine with Samus having PTSD, it's just that there's no in-game explanation, lead up, payoff or impact. Within the context of Other M's story, it just happens to create cheap drama and to "kill" Anthony, that's it. Once the scene is over and it played its purpose, its as if Samus never freaked out at all. All you get is a sort of throw away line in the beginning of the game where Samus recounts the events of Super Metroid and she says "The blast destroyed planet Zebes along with the remains of Mother Brain and my long standing nemesis, Ridley." That's pretty much the only foreshadowing that we get, and it isn't necessarily foreshadowing since she's retelling what happened in Super Metroid. Samus doesn't even have nightmares or anything to give the indication that Ridley still affects her. in Super, Ridley is confirmed to be killed off for good, so Samus freaked out because she's pretty much like "How the hell are you here in a Federation facility, I killed you for good!" The fact that Space Pirates were there should have given Samus and idea that Ridley might somehow be around too. To Samus' credit though, Ridley appeared as if he's ascending from hell itself just to give Samus grief. She recovers from her freakout in about 30 seconds, then beats Ridley within an inch of his life, only living because Ridley faked being dead. As Gnoggin stated, Ridley and the SA-X represent Samus' inner demons made physical, where she promptly eat them afterwards. The Metroid part of her absorbs the X Parasite of the defeated bosses, so Samus pretty much ate Ridley to be sure he's dead. I'm not against Samus talking though, there are plenty of manga depicting Samus talking and she seems fairly in character like the back story manga and "Samus & Joey" (it's a lot better than the title might suggest).

His conclusion kind of fits with one type of therapy where PTSD sufferers are asked to write out or tell or even simply imagine their trauma, but in the form of a story, as if it were happening to someone else. The goal is to have them accept it as having happened but remove the emotion from the memory and have it simply play out as a narrative. The success rate is relatively good as well.

I do believe she did have an emotional attatchment to The Baby, but I also believe that Adam played a huge part in her recovery, too. What I mean is that I know that Samus had confidence issues over the course of the game, since the one thing she went back through hell to get ended up... Well... Exploding. And I think Adam made stupid choices on purpose to help her get her own confidence back, since she's always been one to question her orders. But, that's just what I thought of. I could be wrong, and the game, while I do like it, could be much better on a narrative front.

Her having PTSD makes a lot of send. Most soldiers who experience real combat have PTSD, because of the trauma caused by seeing friends dying on the battlefield and constant threat of death. Millions of veterans of any war suffer from PTSD. Samus witnessed her parent's death. Not only that but she is a soldier. She probably has that ptsd from witnessing her parents death mixed with ptsd being caused by the fact that she is often either the only one capable of pulling off her missions or often times the only survivor of her missions. My biological father had ptsd all the way up to the end and he was the manliest man I ever knew. He's the guy I learned to just enjoy life no matter what from. He was the one person in this world I was closest to. I'm struggling to open up to other people now. I'm starting to think I might have it but I've never been in combat. The only traumatic thing that's happened to me is witnessing my dad pass on.

hey, Lockstin, I'd also like to add that maybe also the Omega Metroid at the end of Fusion could also be seen as a symbol of Samus' journey, her entire career as a bounty hunter has been defined by Metroids, namely in destroying them. The Chozo originally created the Metroids as a "necessary evil" to combat an even worse threat: the X parasites, but then the space pirates & Galactic Federation wanted to use them as weapons of war, the Omega Metroid was created from the DNA of the baby that Samus saved (which also was used to make the antidote to cure her of infection) it's implied (in Other M at least & many forms of fan fiction) that Samus actually did feel a motherly concern for the baby & she grieved its death (especially since it sacrificed itself to save her). Omega means "the last" & the Omega Metroid she fights is truly the last of its kind, she was basically putting the whole species & her own experiences with both the baby & the Metroid species in general to rest, but like you about her demons, the baby Metroid will always be a part of her both literally and figuratively.

Sure, there's the manga to fill in the gaps in the story. But I have never been, nor will I have be a fan of, or even condone having major plot points for a character or story hidden away in somewhere out side the main source. in this case, the games.

But after playing Metroid Fusion, reading the manga, and playing Other M, I am amazed of her absolute strength and character throughout her journey as a bounty hunter and galactic savior. If I played Other M before Fusion and the Manga, I would be concerned. Even after those things, I still was dumbfounded that you start off having your power ups, only to be told that not to unless authorized (Other M). As mentioned before, after learning about Adam in Fusion, and learning the paternal relationship with him and explored further, I am glad to get to know Samus as a character more.
Now as a mental health professional, I appreciate Samus's character even more. This is just me. I have always been curious about her. But even with all that cold exterior, she is (as the song says) "only human."

I think it's interesting having the main character of a story collapsing after encountering it's arch enemy over and over again. I hope we get to see more Metroid games and quality story written ones. I missed the entire franchise and I hope more will come so I can jump in it.

If they wrote the Ridley scene in Other M better it would have made a world of a difference. Instead of just a flash back to her being a kid, how about, A montage of all the times she defeated him. Eventually leading up to her killing him then blowing up the world his body was on. Throw some stuttering like "H-how is this possible." and maybe a line shaky line like "What do I have to do to f_cking kill you." and lastly throw in a "Just die already!" or "Leave me alone!" then have a bad ass fight scene where she flips out and kills him ( again) and lost in the heat of the moment almost kills her friend... Okay I just played it out in my head, and that looks awesome. IMO

There are multiple ways PTSD can present. The kind where one meekly follows orders is one of them. But Samus strikes me more as the type of character who would respond by being reckless, in the style of "I'm the one who's allowed to get hurt, and you're not".

I wish the game foreshadowed this scene better, or at all really. It kind of comes out of nowhere. If I was writing for this game I would have made many changes, but one of the biggest additions would be a simple, 3-4 minuet conversation with Antony. Samus and Antony would find themselves in a safe place where they could just talk to each other ( i know what some of you are thinking, keep it in your pants) and sprinkle in some character development. The first half would mostly be small stuff, but half way into the scene the topic would shift to ridley. Samus would say something like "Ever since he was declared dead after the federation found a part of his head floating in space, I've felt like a massive weight has been lifted off my chest." This one line would fix, or at least give the scene more ground to stand on.

The manga did it right in my opinion but at the point of Other M's story Samus had fought Ridley and killed him 3 times, one in the first Metroid, Zero Mission (fought him twice really), and Super Metroid then she fight him again in Other M. I think she would just anger during that scene in Other M

A boring character with next to no emotion or development. Even Link acts less like a robot than her, and that's even before Wind Waker made him very expressive.

So helping the Luminoth out for free was a robotic trait? She could have sat around and waited for her ship to repair itself, but she decided to risk her life on Dark Aether to help the Luminoth because she felt guilty for not arriving in time to save the Federation soldiers. She didn't have to help them, but she did. Because she has a heart and a spine.
Her skepticism, resentment and aggression towards meeting Dark Samus for the first time was a robotic trait?
Letting the Baby Metroid live at the end of Metroid 2 was a robotic
trait? It was her job to annihilate every Metroid on the planet, but she
let the last one live because she was reminded of the fact that she
herself was orphaned due to a mass genocide.
Feeling distress and anger at Dark Samus eating each of her bounty
hunter allies one by one was a robotic trait?
Just because her character isn't shoved in your face in the form of
melodramatic cutscenes doesn't mean it isn't there. Is she a boring
character, or are you just an idiot? Comparing her to a character who has screaming as his only trait.

The Metroid Manga at least makes her PTSD plausible and is used to build her background. Other M bastardized her character by making Samus into a submissive housewife with separation anxiety. By Other M she had defeated Ridley no less than twice if you only count Metroid 1 and Super, and no less than five times if you count the Prime games. To think that she would suddenly have another paralyzing bout of PTSD when facing an enemy she had single-handedly conquered is, quite frankly, ludicrous, if not plaid.
Also, Samus didn't destroy Zebes, Mother Brain destroyed Zebes.

You can't just slap PTSD to a character & just call them strong for that, ESPECIALLY when it's a video game character. The reason the Manga gets away with it is because it's just that, a Manga. But video game characters need to be in sync with the player, it needs to earn our empathy in it's gameplay alone. If Luigi can get it right without a single cut scene so should other games.
For example, a big reason why Luigi can work with it but Samus can't is that we don't at Riddly the same way Samus does. Not that we have any nightmares about Boos but in games they are much harder to dispose of then Riddly, you just blow him up & get the candy inside, you have no reason to feel anything close to what Samus does. But Boos, you just have to outright avoid most of the time, So we can not only buy that Mario can get overpowered by them but we also get why Luigi would be so scared of them so we feel more in sync with him.

Plus, Ridley took her son. Look, I know the Baby metroid isn't ACTUALLY her son, but he views her as a mother, so it counts!!! The Baby Metroid, whom she... formed a bond with because he didn't attack her. Having him used to help the galaxy was okay with her despite her reservations on Adam's feelings regarding the matter, but Ridley and the Space Pirates wouldn't be so kind, so she needs to rescue her 'son' before he was used to conquer/destroy the galaxy!!!

    a couple things
I think the spectacle of ridley's defeat in super metroid may not necessarily be anyone more than the technical limitations of the SNES, and her knowledge that he is truly dead is probably because he was on zebes when it exploded
another thing is that samus did not destroy zebes; the explosives were automatically activated upon the death of mother brain
I get what you're trying to go for with your theories on Neo-Ridley, but I think the explanation for that is... simple, to say the least. in cryo-storage, samus sees the frozen corpse of ridley(which she probably recognizes from the BOTTLE-ship) and she visibly sees an X-parasite come out of it as it collapses in to pieces so she probably knows at that point that a fight with an X clone of Ridley is inevitable so when she sees the "corpse" of him again in a totally different area, she is expecting it and ready... especially with the knowledge that it's just an X parasite I think it's quite simple and easy to understand why it is run of the mill and something she does not even report to Adam
I otherwise think this is a super solid video, and I am glad that someone with a sense of intellect can make this. it is a characters FLAWS that define them alongside their strengths... not how much of a cold, silent badass they can be.

The problem with the PTSD thing is that it kind of comes out of left field. There really wasn't any build up to it. If other M had questioned Samus' mental state prior to the Ridly event and sown the seeds of doubt in the player then the hesitation would have made more since. Other M did a poor job in including the player and giving them a reason as to why she acted like she did. There was a disconnect in the players expectations and Samus' actions that left most people confused.

What's your source on Ridley escaping in Zero Mission? He explodes in that game, as I recall.
Other than that, I quite like the video. I remember reading the manga way back in 2008~. I didn't really understand everything I was reading - but I loved being able to dive into my favorite character, see what shaped her. Samus was like a superhero to me as a child, and remains my favorite character in any franchise - I feel an intense personal connection to her.
Samus has always embodied courage to me - her willingness to venture into unknown, hostile environments at her weakest and plunder from them everything she needs to conquer them completely - it's a trait I find deeply admirable. I don't think her PTSD counteracts this - if anything, it enhances that image of her in my mind, and I find it inspiring that she is strong enough to work through it.
Other M, by all accounts I've heard, did an admirable job portraying what an episode of PTSD looks like. I will praise it on those merits, though I don't think that the disorder was given enough gravity in the narrative to justify such a gross breach of player-character cohesion, which is the root of most people's complaints with the scene, I believe.
(Seriously though I need that source cuz you assert it a lot and your argument leans a lot on it and I don't know if it's even true. It would be a pretty grievous blow to the vid's credibility in my eyes.)

"There is no possible way for him to ever come back." The same could be said of Prime 3 where Omega Ridley literally explodes and is left as little more than stray phazon particles which would disappear later with the destruction of Planet Phaaze, the source of all phazon. If that's the case, how did he come back in Super Metroid without Samus having the same type of breakdown as in Other M? If it were the shock of seeing Ridley again after witnessing his total annihilation that set her off, it would make more sense to have her break down in Super Metroid and afterwards be able to handle it better in Other M. I don't have a problem with Samus having PTSD, just with how seeing Ridley again after witnessing his disintegration would set her off like that the second time and not the first. If she didn't break down the first time in Super Metroid, it just doesn't really make sense to break down the second time in Other M. In the Manga she breaks down after Ridley's taunting and provocation stirs up memories, but in Other M, he is merely a clone and more of a mindless beast that his original incarnation who doesn't speak.
