  • In the fourth episode of Satya Samvad, Dr. Mrittunjoy Guha Majumdar interacts with eminent social activist Shri V. K. Somashekar, Managing Trustee of Grahak Shakti and Member of the Consumer Action Group of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), on what are consumer rights, particularly in the Bharatiya context, and how we can work with testing and benchmarking of goods and services, technological tools, multi-dimensional advocacy and Aatmanirbharata, for re-envisioning the terms of engagement of consumers with the market and polity. Beyond transactions, modern consumerism shapes norms, defines identities, and influences economies. Today, consumers want the best goods and services for the best value, available to the most people. The marketplace is as much about control as it is of choice, as much about embracing aspirations as of empowerment. From chatbots to ChatGPT, technology such as artificial intelligence is transforming the way that businesses and services interact with consumers. Despite the formulation and implementation of the rather comprehensive Consumer Protection Act 2019, Bharat still grapples with various consumer rights violations, ranging from online fraud and product adulteration to inadequate redressal mechanisms. Any move to strengthen the consumer rights movement is a move towards decolonization and reinforcing economic democracy in the country. The more aware, the more involved our citizens are, as consumers within the political economy of the nation, the more robust will our democracy be, going forward.

Loved it! I have followed Somashekarji's activities since the last 13 years. He was with Anna Hazare and is nationalistic to the core. Those who are mocking his style of speaking should read about him. T20 discussions with clickbaits don't have that much value.

Consumers are everything today. We may frown on consumerism as being greedy but we cannot deny its importance. What we need is a good system for helping consumers and sellers maintain fairness!

In 1961 my family decided to send me to England as my father had passed away in 1958 and my family finances were in a precarious state. My family asked my uncle living in Madras and to help me get a passport. His younger was living in London and offered me a job and wrote a letter to that effect. This was attached to my application and I spent the next 6 months going to the Regional Passport Office every week or so and each time getting “no! It has not been considered”. Frustrated i went back to Fort Cochin and I received a letter refusing my application and asking me to apply to New Delhi HO if i wanted. I did and received my passport within 3 weeks. I left India in 1962 and have only come back 3 or 4 times since. The bureaucracy has now transferred to the UK when trying to get a Visa and i hate it.

The subject matter experts is highly knowledgeable, wise and grounded. However he is terribly inadequate as a communicator. Before conducting such technical interviews such experts should be given detailed questionnaires so that they are prepared , focused and precise. They should be bluntly told that the best of commentary on the subject must come out in crisp, timely and relatable context. Communicative ability is a key component of audio visual formats. These ground work should be done. Please remember that.

Modiji ke raj mey koi do numbari kaam nahi chalega. IAS tak ko nahi chhora unhone! Rajniti mey paiso ka khel toh hota hi hai, par electoral bonds ke saath paise kaha se aur kaise aaye iss par kam hua par ispe virodh hua. Farm laws laye, uspar rok lagvayi yeh leftist logo ne. Kabhi kabhi lagta hai ki kuch log Modiji jaise neta deserve hi nahi karte. Yeh humey pehchanna hoga ki humare desh ko vikasit banane ke liye mazboot finance ka hona bohot zaroori hai aur usmey grahak shakti ki bhumika bhi. China tak ne communist soch chorke market ka mehetva samjha.
