  • We are going to show you how to uninstall and re-install a window balancer. Tools required: flathead screwdriver, safety glasses and gloves. There is a silver take-out clip on either side of the jamb. With the sash closed, use a screwdriver to pop the clips out at a 45 degree angle. Perform this on action on both take-out clips.
Remove the sash stops, which are located in the top corners of the window. Slide the sash up until you feel it disengage. You will want to make sure both sides catch on the take-out clips. Once they catch, you want to be able to see the bottom of the spring loaded balancers and you know you are past the engagement point.
Slide the sash to one side and remove. This is the balancer. It is spring loaded, so use caution when removing.
To remove, push it down and slide it back up. To reinstall, look for hook at the bottom of the balancer. Place the hook in the window jamb and press down. Remember, the balancer is spring-loaded so you will experience some resistance when pushing it down. Push the top portion up and the tab goes on the outside of the balancer.
Next, we will reinstall the sash. Place the sash above the bottom of the balancer. Line up the sash, push it in. Make sure you have clearance on the other side and balance it back and forth until you feel both tops catch.
Slide the sash down about an inch or two. Make sure you do not see the balancer or any metal on either side of the spring. Then, push in both of your take out clips and bring down the sash. Finally, re-install the sash stops.

How anyone could have a thumbs down is beyond me. Never worked with or fixed Window Balancers before. My window does not have the "stop" at the top so maybe that is how the window "broke". Followed these step by step instructions, a little WD40 and almost like new. Thanks!

Well done! I'm an extreme DIY'r but never had to do this repair until prepping my mother's house for sale. Watched a bunch of videos that were helpful but they never showed clear shots of all the piece parts. Followed your instructions, soaked the old springs in WD-40, and 35 year-old windows are functioning like new. Thanks for posting.

For 8 years my sliding sash bay window would not stay open and we could only open it two inches. I watched this video, and then checked the clip and low and behold it was out. I snapped it back in and the window was fixed. Thank you for this awesome video!

Wow, this was so helpful! My window sash had come undone and was difficult to use at all. I hadn't figured it out and was about to bring the parts to a store. I watched the video, and then after looking at my parts I simply had to bend the hook in one of the balancers back into its correct shape, and then I followed the reinstallation instructions, and now I have a working window again! Thanks for posting it.

Thank you for this video! The weather's warming up here in California, so I'll need to open the windows periodically. Something's wrong with the balancer. There's a table right under the window that I have to lean over, so I already don't have a lot of leverage to work with as I lean over that.

Excellent. The only part that may be difficult for some folks is removing the window panel that may be a bit heavy. Other than that, it is very easy if you follow these simple steps. What a difference new springs make.

@@RickLaw101That is a difficult one if the balances are missing. Do you have an identical window somewhere else in the house you can take off and examine? Otherwise, you may need to have a professional come in.

What if there is not take out clips in your window sliders? Nobody at Milgard seems to be able to tell me how to get my balancers out. My Milgard windows are 20 years old and nobody I spoke to at your offices has a clue how to remove mine.

My alum frame window may be 16-20 years old and is different from this video. The instruction on window frame said remove the clip which I could not. The clip is also not near the top. One side of the balancer has dropped to the bottom of the window frame and the hook on it has came off while the other end of the hook hold by a thread was broken and I don't know where it should go. Anyone has an idea where the other end goes and so forth?

Nice video. WD40 may work but it's an inferior lubricant. It runs and smells. Garage door lube is the best and it ain't WD40. You really only need one sash stop so don't freak out if you're missing 1 of the 2 that come with your window.
